This is a common problem in vintage and older petrol/diesel cars as well, the batteries eventually die if the car is left and no charge is being produced. My family collect vintage vehicles and we have to run them at least every 3 months for an extended period of time, over wise we have to jump start or the battery degrades. This also affects newer cars when left for a long period of time, only these types of cars can just be left running in a driveway to recharge the battery, and don't need to actually be driven in order to keep the charge up. The more you know...
@condew6103
@condew6103 7 лет назад
Heck, this is a problem with laptops, tablets, and smartphones, too. Store them for a month and the battery goes dead, maybe even so dead it won't accept a charge anymore.

@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 7 лет назад
Yes all batteries self-discarge, however there is a gigantic difference between 1/4 of a year and 4 days. And so we are clear the LiIon batteries Tesla uses have one of the slowest self-discharges, if the car was really off it should only have 2% discharge per month, and he lost 11% in 4 days making it 38x faster then any regular discharge. Meaning they don't really turn the car off so you constantly risk fancy computers running your batteries into the ground.

@slorolla1129
@slorolla1129 7 лет назад
Bizzo Brigante ok if you drive a car with gasoline you're going to loose miles on it too. a car doesn't stay at 270 mile range. maybe he was driving far and there was no tesla charge stations. and he said he didn't know you loose 2-5% of battery a day without using it. grow up man
@bizzobrigante1588
@bizzobrigante1588 7 лет назад
If you are going on a trip with a plane you certainly don't leave a car on a 30 miles radius and go away for 10 days and expect battery to stay on the same level after returning back?! For instance he could quick charge a car for a hour or two before the trip and he would still have at least 140 miles radius! I understand the analogy with cars using gasoline but this comparison is foolish! The proper comparison would be to compare a Tesla car with a electronic device like smartphone or laptop that has gone in standby or hibernation and still using some portion of the battery capacity. ( You understand that this is actually what a "huge electronic device" like a Tesla car is doing when is not in the drive mode? ) Btw. You said grow up? I should say smart up! :-)

Dan, actually phones will still discharge over time. It could take weeks but it will still discharge even when off. Being the Tesla has a secondary battery that maintains the system the system when the car is off I would have to assume the cars main batteries have no draw when the car is off but they can still suffer from passive discharge. The big question is why the secondary battery which I suspect is just a standard car battery discharged in 4 days. Its possible that battery was at the end of its life. The car is a few years old isn't it. Most standard 12V car batteries wear out over time and lose their ability to hold a charge although I would have expected that Tesla designed a monitoring system into the Tesla to monitor the secondary batteries performance and life so I would expect that you would have had some sort of warning on the dash well advance of the incident suggesting service and replacement for that battery.

I'm a tow truck flatbed driver and we deal with teslas all the time. the newer ones will have a little piece that you'll pry off in the front (looks like a sensor but bigger) that will expose the charge cables to jumpstart the 12v. usually its located in the front of the car on the driver side. also if the charger port ever gets stuck from a dead tesla (model s) you can pop the trunk, on the left side of the trunk there will be a carpeted circle almost that you can pop of . inside you'll find a small switch right behind the wire to the battery that you can switch to release the charger. literally just had to do this to a tesla a few days ago lol

I would have brought 3 50 foot extension cords and used the UMC to plug into the car. Granted that's only at maximum 5 miles of charge per hour. But after a couple of hours you could then drive to any ev charger to charge faster than 5 miles per hour. Put about how many miles you need to reach a supercharger then charge her up. I got a call from a friend who drives a Tesla model 3 and did the same thing you did, stop checking the state of charge with your phone as it fully wakes up the car and uses a lot of power. After three weeks he arrived to find it had power for roughly 45 seconds before it died. He then called me asking if I could help. I asked if the battery still had power which it did so I told him to remove the UMC connector and plug it into the car and I was bringing him over a 100 feet of the extension cords which when I plugged the together and into a 120 volt socket the car slowly came back to life. Three hours later we left the parking lot and drove to a nearby destination charger he didn't know about. 40 amps of charging later we walked over to a restaurant where he bought breakfast and was very happy when his phone went off and the car announced it had sufficient power to make it home. He had selected home as his destination. He now carries 4 50 foot extension cords for oh no! Events. He also learned not to check the state of charge unless the car is plugged in to a 110 volt outlet which when your gone over a week will easily charge the car to 90 percent. No need to plug into an ev charger when a 110 volt outlet will do for long term parking. You learned an expensive lesson, kindly learn from it. Thanks for posting.

from my experience a gas car wont start if u keep it idle for more than a couple of months cuz even in newer gas cars the car uses some percent of the battery from the cars main battery for keeping the electronics on board the car working. so you are mistaken in a way. yeah obviously gas wont deplete but your battery will die either ways. and in gas cars if u keep the gas stored for a long period of time say more than 6 months or so then the gas gets spoilt in many cases it also starts turning into a stick substance such as tar inside the pipes and stuff.
@theduckthatquacks6445
@theduckthatquacks6445 7 лет назад
Technewlogy you are correct.. a Chevy Volt will indeed run it's engine whether the battery requires it or not to burn off old gasoline so it is less likely to gum out and varnish up the entire fuel system.. ethanol all also degrades out of the gasoline. . never leave gasoline in small engines after the season is over.. drain tank and run all fuel out till she cons out..start with new fuel next season..

So you should take the battery out every night because if you take it out the electricity will become static electricity and stay in the battery and not get used.

I'm glad he's complaining, it better informs me of the flaws of these first-gen vehicles. This issue should be addressed by tesla with solar panels on the roof on the next generation...

You need one of those little power pack things my kids use to pump up the tablet when it's dead. Just leave it plugged up to the car with a solar panel to keep it running, or maybe a little mouse running on a wheel or something while you're gone.

At the parking garage your battery was in an extreme power-saving mode that allows you to put it in neutral to perhaps roll it to an electrical outlet (and connect the mobile charger) or put it in tow mode so it can be easily towed. If your battery was completely dead, you would not have been able to open the doors. Any combination of the following will help with the long term battery drain: An increasing number of airports and third party lots have EV charging spots or a vallet charging service. Charge up the battery near where you are going to park it or charge to 100% before you leave, and be an efficient driver to the airport. Take your mobile charger (and an extension cord to be safe) with you. Avoid using your Tesla app. Apps and other services that talk to your vehicle will wake up it up. It can takes 12+ hours for the vehicle to go back into "deep sleep". If you use third party apps (Tesla-Fi, Tezlab, Remote S, etc) change your password and do not update the password in the apps until you return. Enable "Energy Savings" under Power Management and uncheck "Always connected". Note: Model 3 have no "Energy Savings" mode. Disable "Pre-conditioning" (Model S/X only) and "Cabin overheat protection" -- although these should stop functioning after vehicle goes into deep sleep (unless battery reaches an extreme temperature). Park where the vehicle is protected from extreme temperatures. Consider wind direction in the winter (and park where it is blocked from the wind). Avoid direct sun during warm weather. Trade your car with an ICE vehicle from a friend/family member for the week. Leave your car somewhere where you can leave it plugged in and get an Uber, train, one-way car rentals, etc to/from the airport.

You can leave a gas car parked for months, but the battery will still be drained on that gas car 😂

Sith Lord for real and he left his car at 30 out of it's 280 out 300 mile max capacity. That's like leaving your phone on 10% turning it off and expecting it to work 4 days later like wtf
@toysoldier46552
@toysoldier46552 6 лет назад
yeah but it would not be dead in only 4 days, which is where electric cars fail unless there are charging stations and people responsible enough to leave early enough to charge their car up on the way to the airport, then would probably need a charge on the way home but it would have at least been driven home.

Anthony E. You're argument is extremely valid and i totally agree. It is still be technology and will only get better as the years go on and soon they'll probably have portable back up batteries for when your tesla dues which will probably be huge but still a good response

Be advised that every time you check the status of the car in order for it to do that the car must full turn itself on which if you already know the battery is low don't check it as it uses a bit of power to tell you the battery is low. Question 2 Why are you still charging at home on a 120 volt outlet? Have a simple 14-50 outlet installed and you charge at up to 31 miles per hour instead of 3 or 4 miles per hour. Then you will wake up to a fully charged battery every morning ( 85%) instead of less. Question 3 If your charging cable for the car is long enough why not plug it in for 10 minutes would give you enough power to release the parking brake and roll her off the ramp bed. The flashing lights after the tow driver jumped the 12 volt battery to get it off the truck wasn't enough juice after he disconnected the booster battery the car didn't have sufficient power to work properly which is why the lock mechanism was giving you problems plugging in. Just mark it up as a learning experience on the idiosyncrasies of an EV.

RTFM. Read the f manual. 😎 Honest mistake, not many people read manuals. But when it comes to new (sorta) technology don't assume anything.

no, but the RTFM acronym has been around for decades. Why would you buy a new generation toy and not want to know and absorb everything about it? What does he think it is? a fridge?

I have a taxi tesla x 35,000 mile, I use it everyday 200 miles a day, I've never had a problem from doors or problems with the battery, I have to charge it everyday, and the only thing I can say is that it's the best car that I have used in this business rather than different brands, I don't understand why your so negative with the tesla, I am 62 and I've have 19+ different brands of cars, my opinion is that tesla is the best.

You said it. Good as a taxi for city use. Telas and other EVs Good for city driving with a known range. And it's okay for US cities with big wide roads. No one in Rome, or other old cities in Europe with very narrow roads, will buy a Tesla. Too big for everyday use and too cumbersome on long trips. Don't take your family on a unplanned long journey to Yosemite park or Grand Canyon -- if you want to come back alive, that is.

The reason why your tesla uses 2 to 5% of the battery every day when you’re not using it is because it needs to have battery power to run some of the functions
