In this video, Fruity Snacks talks about Fishing in Endwalker for One Hour and Ten Minutes.
... it could've been longer.
Lots of people have asked for it, so I'm just rambling everything down all at once. There is NO visuals so feel free to just throw this on a back tab and listen.
Good luck and happy fishing!

So, I could've talked a LOT more about various things: the new generation of fishers, skill choices and the impact older fish, Sidereal Whale, Snowy Parexus, Spearfishing... But I toned myself back. Please let me know if there is interest in a deeper dive into this topics and I'll see if I can do something.

I havent finished listening yet, but a massive thank you to yours and others guides. I started by finally doing my feast of famine quest at the lull of 6.4 after I finished the savage tier. I went expansion by expansion starting in ARR and just worked on one expansion at a time til i only had a couple of fish left. I tracked a couple of fish that I was warned were notorious. Seeing Cinder Egg and how there was well over 40 people there was a sight. I didnt even know there were legendary fish until I was in Stormblood and found out I had already caught about a dozen of them. I finally completed all my Stormblood fish with an amazing catch on Cinder Egg, moved into Shadowbringers and instantly felt the difficulty ramp up. Eventually caught enough that I went into Endwalker. Ambling Catrop was worse than any legendary fish thus far lol. As of about 2 weeks ago I caught Fork and got my Final Fish title. Thank you and all the other hardcore fishers that helped me along the way

I do not think Sidereal Whale is fine. While education among the playerbase would be generally helpful, even those who know the bite timings, manage their GP, and are willing to subject themselves to whale jail are continuing to have issues catching Sidereal Whale. It has had downtimes of nearly 2 weeks multiple times. It has a nasty habit of popping during godforsaken hours. Fishers have dealt with these issues (or features if you're masochistic enough) before for the Cinder Surprise, E. Skaan, and Ruby Dragon. The difference is the level of prep that goes into Sidereal makes it markedly worse. Going to Ultima every 70 minutes before a window trying to get Phall, which as you said takes an average of 5 windows to bite with proper play. Once Phall finally decides to bite, your character is effectively stuck in Ultima until the Sidereal window. During the window, you have to pray for both Event Horizons and Sidereal to bite - you also need to specifically save your final intuition catch for 4AM Eorzean to make sure Phall doesn't overlap with Sidereal (which has happened to me once). After multiple intuition windows, I've yet to see Sidereal bite from one of my Event mooches. You're correct in identifying the main challenge of Phall/Whale is optimization of catching Event Horizons. The issue is that Event Horizons can be particularly shy, even for people in the know that keep their surface slap buff up by not reeling in. spam chum, and only reel in !! at the proper timings (~12s without chum, less than 7 seconds with chum). I've had a dry spell of 8 minutes (more than half a Phall window) without a Horizon bite while trying for Phall. I keep seeing the same fishers on Malboro, including one of the top achievement hunters in the world, having the same issues of low Horizon count. These are not casuals, these are people that are in the know and research the game. Even when you get a Horizon mooch, you frequently need to wait 25-30s just for it to be an Unbegotten, cutting into your Phall/Whale window. I am admittedly biased because this is the last fish in the game for me, but I think catching the other 1524 fish in the game has given me enough perspective to assess if a fish is beyond the pale. Sidereal Whale is different and not in a good way. It's only saving grace is that all the Phall fishing gives enough scrips to give a sustainable amount of Stardust bait to keep the attempts going. Edit (6/4 - 6pm EST): Sat in Whale Jail today for 6 hours after catching Phall this morning. Slapped Triania within the 1st minute of my intuition window and proceeded to spam chum. I popped 2 Hi-Cordials before I finally got a !! bite at the proper timing. I only had 3 minutes of my intuition window left when I reeled in my 1st Horizon Event bite, utilizing surface slap, chum, and timer macro. Ultimately I had the privilege to mooch only 3 Horizon Events within my 10 minute intuition window that I parked my character 6 hours to wait for. Another int window without a whale bite. There is no good way to spin this. This isn't a lack of knowledge or a lack of mechanical skill. This is plain garbage. Edit2 (6/5 - 9:30pm EST): Sat in Whale Jail again today, ended up farming FATEs because I had no other way to pass the time in-game. Same setup as yesterday, go into the 4AM ET window with ebe identical casted to proc intuition, 10 angler art stacks and proceeded with chum spam. Today was vastly different because Horizon Events were actually biting. I mooched a total of 7 times within about 7 minutes. I had my first whale bite after months of attempts, but it refused to be caught. Next cast was another horizon that unbelievably mooched into another whale that capitulated and landed into my inventory. While I am now on the other side of the grind and thankful to be done, my opinion has not changed on the whale. I hope no other fish is released that causes as much strife as Sidereal Whale. I sincerely hope Sidereal's bite chance during intuition is increased, a new bait drops in Dawntrail that makes horizon bites more consistent, a new ability is added, and/or Phall is changed in some way to respect the player's time more (such as elimination of its time-window).

You aren't wrong and I could probably talk about Whale for another hour, mirroring a lot of your points. I didn't, however and glossed over a few bit to keep things managable. The downtime I do agree is wild and I've never seen somethibg this wild since Ruby. For popping up at different hours of the day though, what's a bad time for me or you, is great or perfect for other fishers elsewhere. Sucks for us, but the fishing system tries to do one thing, and do one thing fairly for a global audience. I think it does *that* well, even though some regions get shafted sometimes. Whale *on paper*is fine for a legendary, it just *feels* terrible. Mostly because of what you pointed out, the waiting, the downtime, the lack of things to do in UT (as someone else pointed out), and the bite rate of phallaina (which I remeber now is ~4%, with an average of 5 mooches per window. Whale is similar.) all contribute to different reasons as to why whale jist doesn't feel good... and that was a bit of a running trend in EW.

Yes, Sidereal Whale is ridiculous, but something has to be THE final fish. Something has to be the ultimate challenge for your now near overpowered skill set. I have actually been farming Phallaina all expansion long because Horizon optimisation is so engaging and fun. I get that low Horizon counts appear frustrating when that's possible to be one of your few experiences at that fishing hole. But as someone who has been farming there for literally two years straight, the rates - on an actually representative average - really aren't that bad. And when the coin starts falling in your favour and you actually have windows with 12+ Horizons and maybe even catch multiple Phallaina in one window (my pb is 3 in one window, one of my friends even did 4!) this is seriously one of the most fun, engaging and rewarding holes you can fish at! At the end of it all, Sidereal Whale is essentially just "catch two phallainai in a row" with a low uptime, except the possiblity of jailing existing makes this a little more consistent than that.

The problem with Whale is HOW you jail for it. Yes, Lancet jailing was bad, but you could at least take a break for X amount of hours and log off once you got the one Mora you need (which is remarkably easier to get than Phallaina). You wouldn't even need to recatch said Mora if you failed Lancet's window by not getting the 2nd Mora. But for Phallaina, you're stuck in Ultima Thule for, as you said, an average of 5 hours, even with optimal strats, which is very soul-crushing and exhausting. You have to keep coming back every hour to try and get the damned thing, growing anxious each failed attempt in fear of Whale's approaching window. I legitimately think Whale would be way less hated if Phallaina wasn't up so often that it makes you legitimately, literally jailed to Ultima Thule. Heck, I'd honestly prefer it if it was up only during Whale windows, à la Stethacanthus, to make Whale even more challenging but without the exhausting prep time, maybe with increased % to compensate, but that may be a controversial take.

yes, the game does not teach you about efficient use of your skills, which is an entirely different conversation (for the record I like how there's little guidance in-game, leading to more community interaction, but I understand why people wouldn't and aspects of more advanced fishing getting more tutorialized in the future wouldn't be an awful thing imo). The thing is, I've only missed two whale windows between February and now, with proper timings, slaps, and GP maintenance. I've only failed getting the int on two or three of those windows, usually because I could only get there one Phal window early (an hour and ten minutes of real time). I get several Horizon Events a window. I hold int until 4 am to avoid a Phal bite. I dodged the DDoS via DC travel to *Materia* and watched fishers fade out around me as I desperately spent all my GP on Chum to get as many casts as possible before my inevitable disconnect and prayed server latency wouldn't hook me a 7.5s E.B.E. instead of reeling in at 7s. I have never seen a single !!! nibble. Now, I don't think that's a *problem* in and of itself - Big Fishing is all about RNG after all. For example: I really enjoyed Ruby Dragon, who is very elusive and also has extremely low uptime. Xenacanthus is up once every 70 minutes, and is the only bite off Hardhead, but slips something like 95% of the time. It's fun though, because it feels like you were at least making progress once you hooked a Hardhead and knew Xena was gonna nibble. Steth really tested your fishing skills to the limit back before the Fish Eyes change, and even now it's an interesting fish ~~once you fight past all the Pearl Eyes~~. Ealad Skaan is obnoxiously rare, but "prep" takes 20 seconds and the window is a whole 45 seconds so one way or another, it's over quick, plus it bites *just* often enough to remind you it exists. Lancet is Lancet, but it's up more often than you think and Mora Tecta is moderately generous, especially nowadays since you can log out and still preserve intuition. Whale though? The window is super infrequent, has an int requirement that's to the best of anyone's math is about as rare as it itself is, and the hole is almost tailor-made to be a nightmare. I've been seeing the same people for months across several different servers, all of which I can *see* are properly using their skills to maximize Horizon bites, yet very rarely do I see any of us catch one. So what's going on? Why do I think this fish isn't fine? The most obvious is the window. June is pretty good (happy pride) for uptime, but May and April were miserable, both having two week whalecations. The intuition is, in theory, pretty good - three of a straight bite (so you can control int with Identical Cast), two mooched fish, and one rare fish off the same mooch. Unbegottens and Phal being on the same mooch is great, and I honestly (in isolation from the other issues) don't even hate the 30s Unbegottens that can harass you, it drives up a bit of excitement during the mooch itself past 16-18s. The problem is Phal, I think, and also to a lesser extent Triaina. Having to try for Phal once an hour is *exhausting,* and it sucks if you catch one six or twelve hours before the whale window because - oops, you're trapped in Ultima Thule now. You can... farm bicolors, I guess. Craft if a friend brings you mats and ferries your results back to an FC/your alt to hold? Do Omnicron ques- no just kidding you FOOL going to Elysium will break your int! The game essentially grinds to a halt, which isn't ideal - but whale windows are so rare, and Phal is such a pain, that for a lot of us it's worth it to lock ourselves out of the entire rest of the game for a few hours instead of missing the only whale for the next two weeks - more if you can't make the next window due to IRL obligations. How do you fix this? Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. Maybe a slightly higher bite rate with a lower catch rate to compensate? I haven't personally seen it slip for anyone, and have only heard of it slipping once or twice, so maybe being able to "see" the !!! every now and again would feel better, even if it doesn't change the actual odds of any given mooch under int "getting" whale. Triaina ties into my earlier point of the hole being somewhat obnoxious, but I think this can be easily remedied for future "whale-like" big fish. See, Triainai overlap with Horizon Events, and can also mooch off them. The mooch overlaps with the beginning of Unbegottens, so you're going to see more than a few of them as you both try and get Horizons, and once you pass that gauntlet... triainai are still there to haunt you. I think to remove frustration the solution here is remove it from either pool and replace it with something else - ideally something like it leaves the mooch pool, and another fish like wormhole worm, a longer ! bite, replaces it so the bite rates of what you actually care about (unbegotten, phal, whale) stay the same but you're not facing TWO !! jebaits in a row. I don't know, this is more of a minor frustration that's compounded by the other two issues. Anyway, Sidereal Whale is a uniquely frustrating fish among the fifteen hundred we have in the game now, and not in a good way. Thanks for coming to my TED talk I guess holy hell I just wrote 5000 words on a fish in a video game I gotta go think about my life
@FruitySnacks
@FruitySnacks 23 дня назад
Yea, the game doesn't teach about efficient use of the skills - what I think it needs to do better is basic use of skills. Something we're not really seeing right now with the FSH job quests. That's a whole *another* conversation I could have (and to your point). Phallaina being up hourly AND being in the int AND being rough to get definitely adds to the whole of the int progress *feeling* terrible. Don't disagree there. On Paper, Whale looks like a fine legendary, but in practice, the RNG for its initial months have been not really doing well. I'm interesting to see what its average downtime looks like in the coming year, as it's entirely possible we're just in a rough patch. (my very silly take about Trainai is that - Surface Slap resolves it issues with relations to HE, but the true menance of getting HE's is infact UFBII).

oh god she actually posted it (with permission) - hi, I wrote this in a discord conversation which is why the formatting is weird and it doesn’t “feel” like a proper youtube response + has that strange opening I think we’re in agreement that right now Sidereal Whale has the potential to very easily “feel” bad, and this was mostly me organizing my thoughts after failing today’s whale about how this design could be avoided in future big fish. Honestly, I think an entire video or series just discussing big fish design in extreme depth would be fascinating - I think you’ve got some really good stuff in this one that is worth expanding on! (Yeah, Trainai are the least of Whale’s issues, mostly I was attempting to explain to a non-FSH audience about the varying factors that add to the general… not-great feeling of failing a window. I’m deeply fascinated by your UFBII take though - was that something you personally preferred to slap over Trainai?
@FruitySnacks
@FruitySnacks 23 дня назад
@@Avaunt I was really, truely, just planning to have this be a 1-off type video that maybe I do at the beginning and end of each expansion, but there's been enough interest that I might do more if people are interested. I don't know how much I could speak on fish design because I'm not SE, but I know I could get some friends together and we could just *talk*. As for UFBII, that's mostly just a silly anecdote that even when I slap Traina, or am trying to get a Traina to slap - UFBII is in my way more than anything. I've lost a lot of time to just consistent UFB bites (both slap/unslap). That's about it, nothing really there, just a weird observation based on my personal experience.
@Avaunt
@Avaunt 23 дня назад
@@FruitySnacks I think there’s absolutely value in getting highly-knowledgeable people together to discuss even the “perceived” design intention of fish, as even players who don’t fish may be interested in the “mechanics” of it, so to speak. No need to make it a regular thing, but I and I think many others would enjoy your thoughts presented in a podcast-esque fashion when you feel you’ve got something worth discussing I disagree there’s “nothing really there” about your UFBIII story - I understand why you wouldn’t put it in a guide or suggest it or anything - but weird little quirks like that are what make big fishing unlike anything else in the game and give it such a unique flavor imo!

Hey! First, thanks to your guides I got Big Fish in ~3 months. They did push me to check the data and make my own assumptions about prep and optimization. Admittedly, I was lucky and got a bunch of problematic fish on my 1st and 2nd try. Unfortunately, the only Big Fish I am left with is Whale and Gharlic now. I don't have a strong opinion about Gharlic, but I have a bone to pick with Whale. I agree with your point of people not knowing how to optimize their Horizon Events, but it feels weirdly inconsistent even with optimization. Sometimes you get 5 Mooch attempts in a row, and sometimes you see 3 per window WITH slapped Triaina and aggressive chumming. It starts to weigh on your conscience: "Oh, I barely had any attempts on Phallaina and got it at the very end of the window, what if the same happens with Whale?" I think Whale lacks that mental reset, imagine if we switched the bait, and had a different pool of fish with absolutely same rates. Instead, it feels like we go from Phallaina to Phallaina 2.0, and that genuinely irritates me. But for the context, on my first Whale attempt, it slipped from me because I didn't have the food on, so I have a personal vendetta against myself here ',^).

This was an interesting listen. Nice to hear from someone experienced in fishing that can be a little critical about the good and bad parts. I've only very recently gotten into big fishing, and I have noticed that quite a few fish are a simple slap+chum, but didn't know if that's just how big fish are "supposed" to be. I honestly pretty much just follow your guides and hope for the best, though I'm enjoying fish that require stuff like mooching and intuition more. Hopefully when we start getting big fish in dawntrail I can be more experienced

I'm very new to fishing, I started the grind for every Big Fish 2 weeks ago and I only have about 40 or so left to catch, most of the remaining ones being just straight catches with a surface slap and chum spamming. I caught most Legendary fish within around 2-5 windows of trying for them thanks to your guides, the exceptions being Sea Butterfly (slippery li'l guy), and a couple of Endwalker Legendaries that I've yet to show up to a window for. As I was starting out this grind, I had heard the classic horror stories of some of the older notorious fish (you can guess the ones) where it took people months upon months or even over a year in some cases to even see a bite, let alone catch them, so I was a bit worried about what I was getting myself into. However, after catching almost every legendary fish and most of the 'problematic' ones in just a couple of weeks, it made me question if people actually knew what they were doing. Of course the skills added in Endwalker make a huge difference, and of course some of the fish are just naturally slippery, but for some of the more involved fish that require mooch chains or tight intuition windows but might not necessarily be the slipperiest fish, I started to wonder if a lot of the complaints I'd heard were just people not really knowing what to do. So, I started observing what the other fishers around me were doing, and it quickly became clear that quite a few people really just had no idea how to fish effectively, which lines up with what you said about how the Sidereal Whale complaints were people not really knowing how to optimize their Horizon Events. Here are some examples of the things I've seen in the last few days: I've seen people catch every fish in a hole and use surface slap after each catch, instead of only hooking the !!! with chum spamming. I've seen people use patience II on fish that do not require mooching because they are under the misconception that 'increases large-fish chance by 80%' means 'I have an 80% higher chance to successfully hook this big fish' I've seen people use Thaliak's Favour 3x in a row, then use patience II to reset a mooch, when they instead could have used Makeshift bait to keep the mooches going without interruption. Think of the Hornhelm mooching into itself and horned king, or basilosaurus mooching into itself and rex as examples. I even saw someone waiting at the stethacanthus area for the sculptor window, then proceed to never spend a single GP on any skills and just raw catch their mooch chains (they never succeeded). My hope is that someone might read this comment and decide to give the fishing log a go, and not be deterred by the things they might have heard from other players regarding time investment or tediousness. Because honestly with just some knowledge, Fruity's guides, the fish tracker website, and the Endwalker+Dawntrail skills, you can really easily catch a lot of the things that people have struggled with in the past if you avoid the aforementioned mistakes.

There's definitely a lot more that could be 'taught' about fishing. Not all of it needs to be done in game, not all of it can be done in game. It's just something that will happen. Even as someone who makes guides and does my best to say "here's what you should do" -- I know people won't always do that. Sometimes, folks just won't want to be optimal with things. But what *should* be known is, in order to not spend months on a fish, you might need to fish optimally.
@baenling
@baenling 2 дня назад
I agree w most things you said (especially the game failing to teach players how to use their skills. It's a huge problem for crafting and fishing especially because they are such unique jobs and are absolutely not intuitive to figure out alone.) and can understand and empathize with most of the rest. I just wish Phallaina had a higher bite chance. I'm closing out my EW fishing and I only have a few more to go. I understand I am cursed but I'm going on upwards of 15 Phallaina windows and ONE bite. Not even touching Whale windows. And I AM the sort of fisher that pays attention to bite timers and buff descriptions and yes I have the book. It shouldn't be happening! I don't care how much scrip it's worth! Especially as it's not even a legendary, it's a collectable! It's the ONE real gripe I have for this xpac, honestly. I appreciate videos with your opinions about fishing, though. I hope you keep uploading them here and there :D

We got 5 additional minutes of mooching and zero "true" mooch loop fish which is very sad to me. (Gharlic is closest but I'd argue Hypha and Durdina don't really count considering you are much more likely to break a loop by catching the wrong fish than continue it) Some fun facts - -12 fish (30%) are straight catch Mayfly (goes up to 15/37% if you also count ones that need int first) -30 fish (75%) involve 0 mooching Comparing to SHB is actually interesting -14 fish (31%) are straight catch Baitbug -36 fish (80%) involve 0 mooching Looking at those numbers alone, the expansions seem actually fairly comparable! I think a lot of the difference comes in with other nuance - differences in downtime, the inclusion of always-up fish in ShB as well as a greater number of fish that required more thought in terms of reeling early or surface slap selection.

Hello, thanks a lot for all of your videos. I am still listening as i comment, just started doing big fishing about 4 days ago. I caught Whale, Fork, and Hyph today. I caught two Phall in one day, sat for 3 hours on whale. Nothing in comparison to what I have read and heard about. Basically just get lucky I guess. I think fishing in general could use some sort of changes in terms of making it skill based perhaps in some way. Alternatively I think they should just make requirements not as bad, but then again it's fishing for a reason. I also don't think people should complain about locking themselves in jail. No one forced you to do that, and if you want to catch the fish that bad to where you are willing to, don't be disappointed when you do not get it. I didn't expect to catch anything ever going into this. I never expect to catch the fish, I think a lot of the frustration stems from the expectations a person may have. Especially when people say "I have been fishing forever" blah blah so on. They should know better than anyone. Anyway those are my thoughts, don't expect anything. Don't complain for locking yourself in jail.

As someone who primarily raids and fishes because it's relaxing (hehe) it's interesting to see how similar some of your thoughts and critiques on fishing are to some of those I've heard from other raiders. You also made me less anxious about Whale. He's the last fish I need for Final Fish and I've been jailed for his window tomorrow since last night. I just rolled up to Lancet and caught the Mora for him without any extensive jailing, so after a few more windows I might just do the same for Whale.

Appreciate the content as always, really enjoy to hear a long time fisher talk about the job and how you perceive fish. I would love to hear more talks about the other topics you mentioned in your comment at some point, whether it's over Dawntrail fishing or just like this vid. I maxed fisher in early endwalker but started trying to complete the fishing log over the last ~5 months, down to 17 fish now (and oceanfishing), and listening to this I started to rank what fish I liked more. For Endwalker fish, I'm still working on most legendaries, but I agree on Snowy and also like Hyphalosaurus and Lopoceras (gonna go to my first Whale window tomorrow). I definitely agree on the perception problem with whale jail, it's why I've put off trying to get it for so long (well that and the window timings) but I'm going use your approach of try for 1-2 Phallaina windows and go from there. Question for you: I think the most frustrating part of fishing is waiting for a window to come up. I can't do any of the cool fishing stuff if a window is 12+ days out, but at the same time the rarity adds to the allure of catching it. Do you think there could ever be an approach to fish design that could get around this, where there could be a fish that is up often but requires a lot of work for it, and could still have such noteriety as something like Cinder or Ruby? My idea would be to have a fish that requires all fishers in an instance to catch a combined amount of a certain fish to drain the population, and then the predator that usually hunts them comes to the surface to find other food and you can catch it, kind of like an S rank hunt objective of some kind. It would be a new approach to fish design and fit the mold of an MMO encouraging fishers to fish together. Once again, thanks for all the guides, especially the Fisher's Guide doc, they have been great tools for learning. Good luck with Dawntrail fishing!

Glad to hear you're fishing adventure has been going along and you're enjoying(?) it! I think when it comes to long downtime fish, the idea can really live among non-legendary fish. Fish like Bobgoblin Bass and Duskfish aren't actually that bad of fish, despite hold the 1, 2 (bob) and 4th (dusk) longest down time records. You aren't 100% guaranteed to get them in their window, but it's long windows and straight forward fishing that makes it a bit more approachable. I think the long downtime fish feel better when they have long windows (like Bob and Dusk) so you don't feel like it's a blink and you miss it (like Ealad Skaan) type thing and you have less FOMO issues (though will still have them). I also think moving the hella long downtime fish (the ones that are more likely than not to have the 25+ day downtimes) to just be focused more on non-legendaries is great because you'll eventually be able to use Fish Eyes on them. Fish Eyes is something that I plan to do more learning content on in Dawntrail because it's a POWERFUL skill and can *really* help address those downtime woes folks have with some fish. I don't think it's used enough and - to the point I made in the chat - not something a lot of fishers know about or know how to use. (Deephaunt and sort of Python Discus are other long downtime fish that have similar feels as well, but they are straight catch fish. Similar thoughts on them as well)

Very well spoken! I think you have a great podcast voice. I kinda wish we got some more interesting fish throughout this expac instead of it only being at the end. There was a good 2 year window where nothing was all that fun to get. I do agree that snowy is the gold standard of legendaries in EW. I love when fish require attention for GP management and decision making. I really think whale is going to slowly lose infamy over time. It mostly felt bad because a lot of people had it as their last fish, so they'd sit there for hours trying to get phals for jail. It will be much less stressful for newer fishers to just show up to a window, try for a phal, and then go hunting for any of the other 200 fish to get. Also anecdotal, but my two friends and I all ended up catching whale on a window where we weren't jailed. Crazy! Anyways, great content as always! It was an incredibly interesting listen.

Got some time to listen to this, my rambling thoughts in no particular order - • I agree that they kind of oversold this kit and then underutilized it. Numbers between expansions as mentioned in other comments aren't that different for things like straight catch fish, but it feels worse here with how strong our kit is in comparison. • Spearfishing feels like a mixed bag. The minigame itself is very fun, and I like the "more interactive" targeting than just using veteran trade on the right fish with the right gig. However, I know we all were ready for what they could throw at us (Spearfishing Big Fish?) just to not see it pan out at all. Getting a bit more into personal anecdote / feelings: • I ran out of Hi-Cordials near the start of attempting the legends this expansion and, without filling them back up, have only felt significantly punished by this when going for Whale, but not punished in an *engaging* way, just in a "I could probably get a few more HEs if I could chum more" way. • Whale is the first time in a while where I've felt my feelings on "unfun" fishing have really collided with full force. It feels like I'm no longer fishing, just rolling the dice for a chance to roll again, only to not see a bite across many windows (a feeling multiplied by the number of phall windows you visit to try to mitigate that side of the randomness). • Low bite rate + limited cast attempts + low uptime + inconvenient int conditions = A frustrating experience for many, even if it fits the Legendary moniker. This is on top of the endless early reels even after getting a slap up to try to get more HEs. All in all, despite my biased view on Whale with it being the last I need, it feels like they've aimed to make fishing much more accessible to players this expansion as you mentioned, and I think for the larger population it's in a much better place. There's generally low punishment for not doing "extracurricular" preparation like stocking on cordials, easy dopamine hits of getting the much-feared big fish quickly, tons of new tools to make old fish dramatically more accessible. I'm hopeful they choose to lean a bit more towards the HW/SB style of bigs in Dawntrail now that they've introduced our massive kit additions this expansion to help some of us super vets feel a bit more engaged. (Also give us big spearfish and/or make us use Electric Current please Square I'm begging you.)

What were your thoughts on the other 4 big fish, the fabled fish on ruby routes? From not intimidating people with 1526 fish, keeping the granular title + combined big fishing title is a good move on their part, although lalachivements informs me that there's not many wavewalkers who aren't also final fish. Lop was really funny, I enjoyed how frequently it bit, with certain other big fish (chari etc) after a few windows sometimes paranoia sets in about whether I'm doing something wrong. I had a gut feeling that they'd use the disapperucu as a hardhead for xena 2, so this was a nice subversion of my expectation. This is the first expansion since heavensward where there's not been a big fish into legendary though - GSoR, Xena, Listra for mooch and Lancet/Drep for intuiton. It feels a bit disconnected in a way because of this, but I'm not sure any EW fish would have been particularly fun for it. Snowy and durdina were the other positive stand outs. I think there is room for a big fish that broadly expects you to be gp neutral but have all of it spoken for - perhaps an int you can triple hook for 6/7, which with HQ would refund you 300gp in angler's arts, coupled with hi cordial for the full refund. Hopefully dawntrail will bring some creativity or more off-the-wall requirements than endwalker's by the books approach. I would also not say not to a space ocean fishing route for an S sized space fish. The lack of things to do in ultima thule doesn't help with whale jail - theoretically you can do fates or whatever, but you can't do instances if you do catch one early and if you don't it feels a bit risky given how long outlier runs can take. Horizon events are the key, but it's rng and sometimes they just won't get on the damn hook no matter what you do. I caught it, and could see what to do but it is a strong contender for my least favourite fish. To me it's hard to get past how heavily it incentivises people to learn the wrong lesson regarding gaols.

Yea, I've said it a few other places I could talk about how I think Sidereal Whale is both a very good and not great fish all at the same time. I see more complaints about Sidereal whale out of NA/EU english speaking players though than the JP speaking players though - so take that as you wish. There was some hope that Rex would be involved with a legendary, and after seeing Gharlicthys's final int requirements, folks had some opinions that rex should've been involved as well. I don't personally know where I stand on that (because while interesting and engaging, I think just 12x Basils was kind of a dull choice, and there's other more interesting places to put the legendary fish in Thavnair... another conversations). As for fabled fish on ruby routes. Hells Claw is ok, Jewel of Plum spring is kind of fun and a BIG contender for potential fabled aquarium fish, Taniwha is ok, and Glass Dragon is less of a question of "will I catch it" and more "how many will I catch." Ironically Ruby is probably a 'friendlier' route for new comers, despite it being locked behind SB.

I'm about 15 fish away from Big Fish and never touched Endwalker fishing, but those remaining fish are among the hardest / most annoying to get. I do have the 'big three', but the remaining 15 are still a big hurdle. I lost all motivation to complete the achievement when someone in my FC went for it, completely overtook me and got the title before I had the energy and motivation to continue. I don't blame them for doing it, but I do notice that I just completely lost the motivation to continue. If you were to create new (legendary) fish encounters for a new expansion, how would you go about it? Keeping in mind that the most dedicated players will want a challenge, but that the newcomers don't want to be scared away, either.
@FruitySnacks
@FruitySnacks 18 дней назад
The speed at which someone gets the title can vary on the amount of time they play, on top of the chances of catching the fish. It is hella variable so don't feel too bad about it. It's a marathon, and you'll get it. As for a legendary fish for a new expansion that's a bit tough and I'm not sure how to answer it. Because a lot my decision would be based around the existing fisher kit, weather, and zone options. I'd want a legendary that would really utilize the kit changes that came in that expansion and really focus on "testing" the fisher on their knowledge and application of the kit. Not maybe new-ultimate-level testing knowledge, but tough enough that you're rally trying to improve your skills (if lacking) within fishing. I don't know if that answers your question, if not let me know as I'll think on it a bit more.

@@FruitySnacks You make a very fair point! Such an encounter 100% depends on the toolkit and circumstances, which is impossible to guess if it's not available yet. Let me ask a different question instead about ocean fishing. I've long semi-joked that it'd be great to have a 'final boss' encounter where a big marine creature shows up and you have to fend it off. You'll have to use the fish that you've caught to deal damage to it, but if you hit the mouth, it'll eat the fish and heal instead. Based on how well you fend it off, with occasional 'weak points' showing up to target fish at for bonus points, you get a higher score and scrip reward. Hitting the mouth reduces points, much like the shooty-game GATE in the Gold Saucer. Would such a thing work in ocean fishing? ;)

I agree mostly with the points on whale. This is my last uncaught fish and, time permitting, I'll start trying to get the Phall up to 5 hours in advance. The downtime between whale windows is often quite big, and I can't make every window, so I get to the point where I feel I have to do this. I don't find it particularly fun. I want to comment on two other fish though, what I feel were the best and worst of the six. Hyphalosaurus was my least favorite fish and is very tough on GP. With such a small intuition window and the desire to want to DH/IC or TH (depending on timings) to trigger a window, you run out very quickly even with 10 AA stacks, since you'll be prioritizing makeshift bait. You mentioned the EW fish didn't really need the new skills but this one absolutely makes use of everything you can throw at it. Fish with short intuition windows are the least enjoyable because you get windows where you have a single cast and that's it. Combined with the very long reel-in animations and... it's not fun. Furcacauda was a great legendary. Ealad was my last SHB fish, and an nightmare, but that was due to the infrequent window. Furacauda was up multiple times a day usually and didn't need any prep. This took 40+ windows to catch, but each attempt was only a few minutes and if you missed it another was right around the corner. Compared to Whale, which is taking multiple hours of prep per attempt or Hyphalosaurus, which felt like an entire window would just be wasted due to the wrong fish biting, this one was kind of nice. Honorable mention to Lopoceras Elegans - it is nice when a fish bites a lot, even if it is slippery since you feel like you're actually making some progress, that 'I almost got it' feeling you don't get when you finish a 10 minute whale window, after five hours of prep, without a single nibble.

Hypha does seem pretty divisive for a legendary fish. I give thoughts on it that I think sound positive, but I'm still not too sure on it. I was on an ocean fishing voyage with you lately! You mention whale jail but wasn't the same concept used for lancet? In fact if you're savvy you don't even need to use collectors glove to get the jail for whale, just catch ebe's last. Lancet collector glove seemed almost... mandatory. Anyways I do agree that a lot of fishing was being clever about your skills - I started big fishing in EW and it always seemed that each fish was a puzzle - the guides only go so far but there's a lot left unsaid. I don't know what fishing was like pre-EW, but it sounds like just RNG. I personally like the challenges especially the technical ones, rainbow 7 hues was especially interesting if you know what you're doing.
@FruitySnacks
@FruitySnacks 23 дня назад
Jailing was used for lancet, but you didn't use collector's glove. Arguably, the Lancet jail is worse on paper because you can't guarantee you'll trigger the Lancetfish intuition when you want - with Phallaina you can do that at least almost every time (assuming you have phallaina). Pre-EW fishing is a lot like EW fish, just with less skills. The "pure" RNG of fishing was basically pre-ShB and the addition of Surface Slap, but even then yo ucould argue the biggest RNG was back in ARR. More technical fish is good, but you don't have to have a technical fish to be engaging.

Now that I've listened to it all I do want to complain about the quest fish being added to the pools (snowy parexus and fork pools most notably). Is it reasonable to want to not have them still be there? It feels like I was punished for doing the quest before hunting after the legendary fish and had to fish with them in the way and making things far more annoying (couldn't slap focus the cerulian cores (sp?), and having that smarg fish in the fork pool just made it more annoying since it also hit the 8 sec window when you'd want to recast. /rantover
@FruitySnacks
@FruitySnacks 23 дня назад
From what we've been able to tell the Legends were design with the quest fish in mind. There is a change to the bite rates before and after the quest. For fork it seems inconsequential. There is a change, but it shouldn't be hugely noticable over such a small time frame. (Anecdotally, it may have more of an impact on Dahlia instead of Fork, but even then it's not terrible.) For Snowy, the so-far general consensus is that doing the quests IS better because the Garlean Clams reliably improve your ability to get 3 casts per int (it raises the average closer to 3 at least). They bite pretty early so you can 'fail' the cast quicker, leading to more casts in the int. ALL THAT SAID. I do think they should keep the fish in the pool to begin with regardless of if you do quests or not. I think even though numerically things aren't that hugely different, to your point it *feels* bad -- and that's been a noted complaint for a lot of Endwalker fish.

I agree with your opinion on Whale being fine if I'm being honest. I usually showed up 1 or 2 Phall windows early to see if I could whale jail just due to its rarity, but I refused to spend more than that as I'd rather just yolo for Phall at the whale window than spend more than an hour or two in jail. It feels like a proper legendary fish to me, and the fact its window doesn't have the same level of long term downtime like Egg, Salad, and Ruby Dragon makes the Phall bite rarity less egregious. It can be annoying, but it's not to the level of a 3 week downtime until a window followed by a 2 week downtime immediately after like some of the past legends have, at least not at their consistency. To your mentioning some people think of Durdina as the true legend of Thav, I completely agree with them. Even trying to optimize bite timings I can easily say that Durdina was my least favorite of the EW fish.
