Funny how phytic acid is sometimes called "antinutrient", even "toxic", and sometimes - "a natural plant antioxidant" (and sold as a supplement). According to "my own research" I did years ago: 1. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for sustaining life on Earth, where it plays a central role in the transfer of energy within organisms, the structure of the genetic material (DNA), and in the composition of cell membranes, bones and teeth. 2. Phytic acid is the stored form of phosphorus found in seeds, nuts, legumes, and unprocessed whole grains (concentrated in the outer bran layers. Thus, white flour contains minimal amounts of phytic acid.). 3. Phytase is the enzyme that neutralizes phytic acid and liberates the phosphorus. This enzyme co-exists in plant foods that contain phytic acid. The grains that are high in phytase include rye, wheat, barley, and buckwheat. Phytase was reported to be inactive in dry conditions, whereas it was activated in wet conditions to degrade phytate. (And phytase is activated and works faster in an acidic environment. Like fermentation.) 4. About the possible benefits of phytic acid (I haven't checked the studies, just took note): It’s known as an antioxidant for its ability to reduce blood glucose levels, exert a protective action against colon cancer, and act as a prebiotic due to its ability to bind enzymes. The binding of iron promotes antioxidative activity by reducing lipid peroxidation and free radical generation (Bohn et al. 2008). Phytic acid-zinc interactions reduce non-specific deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) synthesis and lower serum cholesterol by lowering the zinc/copper ratio, which could prevent cancer and coronary heart diseases (Norazalina et al. 2010). Phytic acid also reduces the calcification process that can prevent renal stone formation (Grases et al. 2006). The influence of phytic acid on starch benefits diabetic patients and promotes colon health by lowering the blood glucose response and slowing down gastric emptying (Yoon et al. 1983). One study has also correlated decreased osteoporosis risk with phytic acid consumption… In fact, I suspect we get two good things for the price of one: the broken down phytic acid gives us phosphorus, and the undestroyed phytic acid works as an antioxidant. :))

In Eastern Europe, we NEVER eat those types of veggies raw (kale, beets, spinach) All of these foods are always cooked, and usually eaten with sour cream or a lot of butter. I was quite surprised to see them eaten raw in America. Nuts are usually very expensive there, and not widely available, so you can only eat small amounts anyways.

@@BumblebeeApothecary absolutely! Our wise divine feminines throughout generations knew intuitively what is the right thing to do. All of our health issues stem from not following that old advice. It is so beautiful to learn the scientific reason for all those activities around food prep and cooking. And dr Natasha is the master in connecting both views. The training I received from her during my CGP education is more valuable than 4 years of the formal pharmacy education. She is an angel 😇

My 70-year-old neighbor has gout. Every time it flares up, he goes Mediterranean for 3 months, then right back to eating like crap and drinking heavily. Can't help but wonder if he ditched the booze and went carnivore if he'd keep the gout away permanently...but he refuses to even try. He bought into all the anti-meat BS. SIGH.

Very helpful, thank you! I read Toxic Superfoods and it was really eye opening. Magnesium citrate and lemon juice are also super helpful when lowering oxalate levels/when dumping oxalates. Redmond’s Relyte electrolytes too. Eventually I went full carnivore and am working on leaky gut too.

I actually disagree with this. I don't know how many people I know that have had kidney and gall stones and not once have any of their doctors mentioned oxolates beyond it being what was making up the stones. I started having oxolate issues when I had a boron deficiency causing issues with electrolytes. My doctor was clueless, the only reason I noticed was because I had seen so many people in histamine intolerance groups having issues.
@annalynn9325

@@GoingGreenMom That’s an interesting perspective. Are you saying high oxalates contribute to histamine intolerance?

Some people that have aspergillum mold toxicity will have issues dealing with oxalates because aspergillus turns to oxalates in the blood...of course this can also go along side with heavy metal toxicity which we know then leads to leaky gut...inferred sauna and TRS has been shown to help some amongst other things of course.
@HiloBoiz808

I never knew of oxolates until I started a carnivore diet. I have never had kidney stones but has joint pain possibly related to oxolates. I became aware of oxolates when I started dumping them due to diet change. I dumped oxolates through my eyes. My eyes started being red and irritated then crusty, was very uncomfortable. Lasted a few weeks and finally stopped. I have found that if I attempt to reintroduce foods with oxolates I immediately suffer. Also it is oxalic acid in the food that becomes oxolates when consumed.

I have pretty bad oxalate problem. After cutting them out when I worked with Mary Ruddick. I realized I couldn’t add them back in. I get this weird sharp pain in my jaw and its like a sour sharp feeling when I eat some things, which Mary told me was an oxalate issue. I also started getting vulva pain when I tried adding them back in, especially the cassava and tiger nut products. When I eat low and medium oxalate foods I am fine. I cannot do high or very high oxalate foods at all. I have CIRS so yes I do think its gut related but also I just think some people are more sensitive when they have mold illness. I am curious on your thoughts about the low vitamin A diet. I heard about if from the eatbeautiful blog and she said it actually helps with certain conditions like MCAS

I went low oxlate and tbh I am sorry I started it and for the last 18 months have had a serious leaching of my magnesium because dumping oxalates attaches to my magnesium. I am on a fb for it and get great advice there so I know most of the tips but be warned, it isn't a walk in the park and if I could rewind, I just wouldn't start.

In my experience how you cook it can make a big difference. Even the simplest thing like grilling a steak or cooking a burger patty might have some tips that can make it retain the juices &flavor and choosing meats etc. I am not the best cook😅 but have made a huge improvement by watching RU-vid videos on how to cook meat since I have tried to up my meat consumption and go carnivore. I have fallen of the wagon many times but every time I get back on it is easier and eating meat and fat is more “pleasurable” I guess ….definitely a process if you are not crazy about the tast. I always liked eating meat but this much ….is challenging. But the more you get into it the more you notice subtle differences in the cooking, quality etc. I’m visiting my mom and she grilled some beef patties for me in a pan….they were totally dried out😂…and I realized that’s how she always made them. But when you eat the beef patty and it’s nice and juicy…..it’s alote of trial and error. Anyway good luck on your journey, I hope you find what works for you❤ And greetings to you as well Marisa😊
