Only learned this recently myself but I think it's so important for people to know eye contact customs and showing respect in general varies greatly across cultures ❤

COLLEEN - My husband struggles with eye contact similar to how you feel about it. We’ve been together almost 30 years & to this day he will not make eye contact with me lol I’m a SLP so I completely understand how some people would rather gouge their eyes out than make eye contact so I never take it personally cause it’s part of who he is at his core & has nothing to do with the person he’s talking to.

The kids are so sweet!! Each one is unique with their little personalities but they seem very close and Flynn is an amazing big brother! I’m so happy we get to see them growing up again I missed you all so much so glad you are here and you are perfect exactly the way you are ! You may have things you feel you need to work on but at the end of the day you were created perfect! Just as Maisey Wes and Flynn …just as Maisey sees you caring when someone is hurt she could also pick up on the not nice things you say to yourself….its just a habit you will turn it around it just takes time🥰

I live in the United States and I never was taught that eye contact was that big of a deal unless it was a serious conversation. I think that was just how my parents raised me. Unless they really needed to make sure I was taking in exactly what they were saying they would let my eyes wander. No one's has ever made me feel bad about it. And im definitely bad at it. If it's a doctor and stuff I'd make an effort to look at their nose but other than that most of the time I realize I don't know what people's eyes look like 😂

Hi Colleen, I don't look people in their eyes all the time. I am a visual person so when I am trying to remember a conversation or a memory to tell someone I look up to the left. If you google it you will see that this is a real thing. we tend to look to the right when we are imagining things, but towards the left when we are remembering. So I feel that you could be like that too. SO don't get to down on yourself about it. This is just how some people are...so relax and be YOU! You are amazing! Hugs and blessings.

hi colleen, i’m an autistic person with a bachelors in communication who struggles with eye contact so i can tell you all about it. eye contact is a social cue and a big aspect of nonverbal communication. people communicate a lot with their eyes so if youre not making eye contact in the us people read that as you’re not listening, you’re not confident, you’re lying etc etc and when you make good eye contact that’s seen as being trustworthy, a good listener, more sincere etc what i struggle with is making the “correct” amount of eye contact. many times i can’t talk and look someone in the eyes at the same time, so i focus hard on eye contact while i’m listening to try to make up for it and sometimes that makes people uncomfortable, so i get what you mean about that. i also tend to make excessive eye contact with people i really like and trust. i wanted to study autistic communication in college because eye contact is one of those things i feel autistic people do differently, it’s not wrong just different so the people that think you are being rude or weird just don’t get it !!!!! anyways i try not to worry about it too much as i know it’s one of those things that neurotypical people prefer not so much a set in stone rule but ive also never really had people make fun of me for it. do what’s best for you! hope this helps

Hey. I’m in Vancouver BC Canada and as far as I know people just look people in the eye while talking to them. No customs here. I do know that people who have difficulties hearing do look at people’s mouths while conversing. I remember someone telling me ( when I was younger) that you should always make eye contact with the person you are talking to and that it shows them that you are engaged with them in conversation. ❤

Have you ever tried looking people between the eyes? It was a trick I was taught when I was a kid. If you look at the bridge of someone’s nose, your eyes line up as if you’re looking at them but you don’t suffer the discomfort. Once you get more comfortable with the person you can venture into really looking in their eyes to stretch. Has worked for me.

Not a Tortilla Talk question, but a Tortilla Talk story that I hope you see!!❤ Growing up on one of the Great Lakes (Erie), I have always spent a lot of time on beaches, and have been collecting rocks ever since I can remember. Last summer when you were taking a break, I dove deep into the rock side of tiktok, and purchased a rock tumbler of my own. When you returned, I was so happy to see that we have the same hobby, and you are just as excited about it as I am! This winter and spring I took advantage of all the nice weather days I could, and would have mental reset days collecting rocks and watching the waves on local beaches. Due to this current hyper fixation, my boyfriend of 6 years and I planned a week long road trip to visit all 5 Great Lakes, in hopes of seeing beautiful views, and collecting some rocks from each lake to tumble and display in our new house. Together, we found many beautiful rocks, but I ended up receiving the most special rock of my life! While rock hounding on a quiet beach on Lake Superior, on a perfect sunny day, I turned around to my boyfriend (now fiancé!!!!!) on one knee holding out a ring! He asked me to marry him in the most beautiful special way I could have ever imagined! The stone on the ring is a Herkimer Diamond, which is a gemstone than can only be found in a small town in upstate NY, where he grew up. He has mined for gens in this town many times and a kid, and we have gone camping in this area countless times since we started dating. I’ve started collecting CDs again recently! I even bought a cd player that looks just like a record player! I used to have thousands, but now my criteria is that there can’t be any songs that I skip on the album. So far I have Chappell Roan’s album, TTPD, Billie Eilish’s new album, and Gracie Abram’s new album.

I live in Eastern Kentucky and I was taught in school that to show your teacher your listening you must give eye contact. So anytime someone is teaching, preaching, or just giving a speech I try and keep eye contact but I will say it is hard for me.
