I can easily tell you what the best knife steel is hands down. It’s Adamantium. The only metals that can rival it are Beskar and Vibranium. I’m disappointed that neither made your list.

Beskar alloy is made by Chris Beskar of Stavatti Aerospace. Yup…flying cars within 10 yeara

Only beskar might be steel. Iums aren't steel. They might be added to steel but they have no iron content of their own

🚫 The problem with adamantium is the extreme difficulty in sharpening it. They had to cut most of the X-Men movies in half, because it always took Wolverine at least an hour to sharpen his claws for the big battles at the end! Besides, we are talking about _STEELS_ here, not exotic elemental metals from other galaxies! Anyway, my personal choice is the almost indestructible "Krell steel", from the _true historical_ movie, "Forbidden Planet", with a very young Leslie Nielsen.

Slash ATS-34.... slash CTS-BD4 lol My favorite is K390- it is incredibly tough for a steel thats routinely taken past 65HRC. Spyderco takes it to 64-65 HRC, but a custom maker will do 66-66.5HRC ... I have a fixed blade that Rockwelled @ 66.4 and it gives me noticeable improvement in edge holding over Spyderco's K390, which is fantastic anyways... but the main reason I LOVE K390 is that it seems to hold that ultra high sharpness longer than other steels, and it takes a killer edge at 400 grit and it takes a smoking edge at 8,000 grit and anything in-between. Some steels are alot harder to get hair whittling sharp at certain grits then others... K390 has whittled hair off a fine DMT plate for me and it will whittle off an extra fine, medium extra fine and extra extra fine DMT plate... K390 has seriously impressed me with its performance, its feel and even its looks. (Looks meaning how well it polishes, i.e. mirrored bevel)

It's funny how opinions vary. M390 is probably my favorite or at least up there. Maybe it's my imagination but it seems to hold an edge longer than other premium steels I have used and fairly easy to sharpen. D2 is definitely overlooked as a cheap steel. It is very good for a much lower price. Coldsteel and kubey do a great job with aus10 and aus10a. I'd probably put that on my list because of the performance for the price. I have some inexpensive Coldsteel knives made with aus8A and they do a great job treating those have held up great. I might even pick aus8 over d2 because it seems to hold the edge just as long if treated right and it's much easier to sharpen.

Absolutely no way to argue with your picks. Anyone who has used your s tier picks would have to rate them the same. I don’t put a lot of stock in the steel a knife is made of, however, unless it is from a manufacturer that really knows how to do it. For example, my Spyderco Tenacious in 8cr13mov just outperforms my Kershaw Link in 20cv in every single category including edge retention. It is also better than my Leek in CPM154. It is not even close to my para3 in S45VN however. I know, tldr and weeds and all, but I think manufacturer is WAY more important than steel. Spyderco almost always gets it right :-)

For me I’m opposite of wanting more stain resisting in a knife but also want that toughness so rt now my favorite steels are lc200n or vanex superclean etc.. with me living on a island rt in the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean and ocean beach being just few miles from my house I def need that confidence in a knife that will hold up to this nasty salt humid air that is always by me. Know just by the cars I’ve owned here last 30 years over the other 20 living little more inland u can see just how fast rust attacks cars that paint chips and just grows from there. Can’t leave any tool not properly oiled etc outside for any time if u want to keep it in good shape we’re I live. Like rust is in the air with that salt. But yes I do love a tough blade steel and got many of em just better Make sure to do ur maintenance on em regularly even if not using em

I always thought cpm-154 was supposed to be a little better than 154cm. I really know nothing about this steel but, your last two steels you mentioned, I'm going to try out, and use hard. Sorry... I think knives should be used to cut, hammers should be used to hammer, screwdrivers should be used to drive screws, and prybars should be used to pry. Do we use tools for tasks they aren't designed for sometimes? Sure. But we also know they shouldn't be used that way. If you're going to use a knife as a prybar, a tough steel like 1095 or 3V (countless others) will be your best bet. But, for example, if you break/damage your Medford knife while prying with it (the blade will probably be fine, but the critical damage will likely be lock face or pivot warping), I can guarantee Medford will make you pay to have it repaired. Why? Because it's designed for cutting, not prying.

The single most important thing about any steel choice is if your favorite knife is available in it and how good its manufacturer at heat treating it. My favorite knives are available in variety of steels and it happened that their manufacturers are fantastic at making N690 work. It is a good well rounded steel with enough toughness, edge retention, corrosion resistance and can be sharpened with basic tools in its optimal HRC range. As for tough beasts that are not as rust-proof and are not easy to sharpen either it is PGK for me. I use one tiny knife made of PGK to cut wood and bamboo, it cuts lake a laser and I barely need to re-sharpen it. D2 is ok too, but it is usually not heat treated to its maximum capacity. If I have to chose one knife it would be made of N690 most likely.

I would recommend trying n690co on a Italian made knife. The steel has a mediocre reputation and is often compared to vg10, this is completely wrong the only thing that it has in common is that they are both billet steels, n690co is a stainless nitrogen steel with added cobalt and it doesn’t need to be sandwiched in another steel to make it stainless and more flexible like vg10. The reason I recommend trying n690co in a Italian made knife is because the hardening factory in Maniago and the hardening factory of extrema ratio do wonders with the steel and actually make it outperform a lot of premium blade steels.

If you are taking about Way of Knife it's legit and yes good company. Send it to them though as they will fit the blade to your scales.

Actually got a good deal on a Browning on Wish. You just got to be aware of the two common scummy seller tactics 1) Bait and switch (A/B product - be sure to select the right one or you'll end up with some Chinese model you don't want) and 2) Obvious fakes: If the knife is 75% off don't bother. Look for sellers in the US w/ expedite shipping offering 10%-20% off.

Ya but almost no one knows to look for these things. For new people, it's best to avoid wish altogether

How can a steel with high toughness be easy to sharpen? Thanks.
@elevationmoto6208
@elevationmoto6208 Год назад
The toughest steels do not have a lot of carbides. Carbides are very hard and make steel resist wear, including sharpening. So, to answer your question, high toughness steels lack wear resistance. Check out knife steel nerds.

I like M4. It's hard for me to place it now with K390 being (imo) a steel with superior attributes in the same ballpark. I SHOULD have listed it alongside K390 though

Maybe someone can help me pick a steel. I want to get a Kizer sheepdog. Have a choice of 154cm or cpm10v. I'm new to this knife game. I'm using it for cutting cardboard, paper, packaging etc. Also not a expert on sharpening. Thx in advance
@metal_complex
@metal_complex Год назад
154CM is one of the most balanced, user friendly compositions in existence. It's stainless, reasonably tough, easy to sharpen, takes a fine edge and holds it for a decent amount of time. That's my vote.

VG10 (a very common steel) literally sits in between 14c28n and 154CM but doesn’t find its place anywhere on the list…hmm
@metal_complex

Finds its place for what? Edge retention? That ain't the only element friend. Edge retention alone doesn't dictate rank. Too many people think this way.
