Mike, you are a real comic book collector. Slabs? I'll take 'em raw please! 9.8? Sorry, spine ticks and creases are fine! Love what you collect and how you collect. Yeah, we all want our comics in the best condition possible but if it's not... you get it anyway because you want it in your collection. After this TOP 10 video... L M C = my T O P comic book channel! You're the every collector, that's why your channel has taken off! Thanks!
My favorite part of watching your uploads is your personal journey before and after you started your channel. You make us believe we too will find a good deal out in the wild. I had the luck in traveling to Maine in 1981 on a summer vacation trip and stopped in a nautical shop with lots of trinkets. Upstairs l found a box of magazines. When l got to the bottom of the box l found many issues of Tales to Astonish from issue 48 and up. The owner wrote 10 cents a book on the box. I bought the box for $5!! It’s my favorite find to this day.
That's the dream to find someone to give that many books for such a deal, and you're right that collecting is what a person finds interesting. Not letting the money media persuade how you collect will keep the culture going for years to come. Because if time has shown, that what's not valuable today can change tomorrow.
That had to be fun going through those memories. I'm hopeful that I one day find the same kind of deal for a collection. One that can help me get me to where I want to be with my collection.
I like your comment about what comics are really about enjoying them sharing them the comrade camaraderie with other people that enjoy them also Great show !
Happy 2023 Mike. It did my heart good to see you using a proper spirit level, can't beat those olde-timey tools - never runs out of battery power and never loses internet connection. It's my firm belief that our love of comics is simply the surface manifestation of the Collecting Gene, a mutation which many humans share. One test for this gene is to show the subject a numbered item (eg this X-Men card is #22 of 100): if their reaction is to drive all over town looking for the remaining 99 cards, they possess this gene. I know I do. Web Of Spider-Man #1: beautiful Charles Vess cover, love his work. Strange Tales #169: I'm still amazed at how much this one goes for considering how little Brother Voodoo has done in the Marvel Universe over the decades, and really nothing all in the movies. Star Wars #68: Gene Day was a brilliant artist, his work on Master Of Kung Fu is stunning; we lost him far too young. Amazing Spider-Man #46: those colours just work so well together, masterfully done. Mike, it's so refreshing to hear you talk about enjoying comics for their own sake regardless of monetary value, for the story and art and the chance to share them with your son. You understand this hobby better than so many RU-vidrs out there and completely deserve you channel's success.
Great vid! I wish more people actually read the comics they are buying. You're right, the hobby has become all about speculation and investing. But there is more to a comic than just the condition! Crack those babies open!
Totally agree with your views on enjoying a comic over speculating or hunting monetary value. Yes, there is no denying the excitement you feel when a comic you own suddenly becomes ‘hot’, but for me, I want to hold the comic, read the comic, enjoy the comic (and sometimes smell the comic … I can’t be the only person doing that). Surely that is what the creators wanted?
That seller that you mentioned from spots 1&2 was actually the first video of yours I ever saw, and sold me on your channel. Also, I'm certain I'm not the only one, but would absolutely love to see your list of your personal favorite stories that you've picked up. Lastly, dude you can't tell us about an antique collectables and not show some stuff off lol. Comics or not, I'd be very interested in seeing cool historical collectibles
Good idea! Maybe at some point this winter I’ll have time to talk about my favorite stories I picked up, especially if they are $1 books. As for the antiques, yeah I guess that was a tease! I’m not sure how I would organically fit that into my channel but maybe a few pick ups here and there especially if I get them at a flea market while hunting for comics. The other thing I worry about is some of the stuff I collect is very strange and there might be a lot equally awkward comments.
@@lunchmoneycomics ah that's totally fair, didn't think about it, but makes sense. Of course, also sensible to keep certain hobbies for yourself and not having everything on the channel. A knick knack picked up during a comic run is definitely a cool concession to share some neat pieces though!
Great video. I loved your 2022 journey in comic books and how it turned into your channel. I think one of the biggest benefits are the memories that you are making for your son and your times together. He will carry that forward in his life. Cheers 🎉
That collection of about 800 comics for about 5 cents a piece was an Excellent deal and even better story. That earlier video on same deal had a lot of interesting content.
I do wish I lived in the US! Don’t see any comics in markets near me and have only ever found a few keys in the wild, I love the hunt and I love being able to read all the stuff I buy :)
Absolutely agree with the number one pick and the reasons why. The best part of the video though was the beginning. I never noticed the color of the walls until you took the stuff down. I have the same color on my wall! Now I know how it looks on RU-vid.
Awesome stories! I subscribe to numerous Comic channels and yours is one I look forward to most. Nice to see content from someone really passionate about the hobby and not looking to flip every book. Would love to see other collection room as well ;)
Hi brother. I enjoy your videos very much. I love the part of the country you live in. I have never been there. Maybe one day. I live in So.Texas . Anyway , happy hunting.👍
Loved this.Thought you might like my little story from the city of Leeds UK.In 1965 in our big indoor market my 11 year old self came across an old guy with just a big table of comic books.I had just discovered comics from the USA recently and had a couple of dozen marvel and DC.Here the guy was selling second hand comics for 4 old UK pence each. He would buy them back off you for 2 pence the next week. The two comics I could afford to buy were Avengers 4 The return of Captain America good enough in itself and great condition but the other was Amazing Fantasy 15 .Of course the first appearance of Spiderman. Also in great condition .It was only 3 years old.Of course I didn't know the significance of this comic then I sure do now.Which brings me to the real bummer of my tale .A few months down the line for some stupid 12 year old old behaviour I had my comics confiscated to pay my aunt back for that behaviour. My comics were given to my seven year old cousin by her.A few weeks later at her house I saw him throwing the comics about and literally destroying them all That was the last I saw of them.I dread to think what the value of them all would be today particularly with Amazing Fantasy going these days for up to a million dollars or so.Keep up the good work.👍and happy new year.
Congratulations on the success of your channel. Like you I am at a point in my life that I can go find the books I had as a kid or couldn't afford at the time. Keep up the great videos.
Low grade better than no grade is what I always say. I a big ASM fan and I'm only 80 issues away from a complete run, and alot of my older issues are in rough shape but they all are complete with no missing pages or covers or anything like that. My earliest is issue 17. Your 46 is in way better shape then mine, mine is like a 1.5. Great videos and awesome finds
Great video, really enjoy the stories you have on collecting comics, have learned a lot since I started watching your videos. Can’t wait to see what you find in 2023. Rick 😎✌️
Too true on your last comment about the true meaning of collecting comics. It was obvious from your attitude that you felt that way. It is what made me subscribe to your channel. Know it's a small way to help you but glad I could help you with that at least man. Congrats again and keep up the good work.
Excellent insight and stories about the comics on your list. Your content is a definite breath of fresh air compared to a lot of stuff on RU-vid. Keep it up and good luck on your searches in 2023!!
Very cool, I feel exactly the same way about comics. I'd tell people #1 collect whatever you enjoy. Not just because it might be worth big bucks one day. So great your explaining that to your son too. I agree about the CGI. etc graded cased comics too. I got my very first comics around 1966 probably Batman and Superman ones. But in early spring of 68 I was there as a six year old. When the second Marvel explosion all hit the stands brand new. Ironman#1, Sub-Mariner #1, Capt.A #100, Incredible Hulk #102, etc. ASM in the issues #50's-on ward. Also was given and was able to buy some Tales To Astonish and Tales of Suspense like new. As well as DC Neal Adams, Gil Kane books.
When I got back into comics in 91,after 15 years I also went through the cheap bins and bought about 600 the first year, lol and I read every one sometimes more than once, lol,I still kick myself because at 16 I gave away probably around 1000 comics to some younger guys who I knew liked comics,as I had started working and thought I had aged out of reading them ? Idiot !! Still remember I had quite a few that would be worth lots now,ah well, such is life, hahaha
Very cool recap video. Finding nearly 800 comics for a nickel a piece is just mind-blowing really. Regardless of what they are, familiar or not, it can spark so much conversation.
Awesome video! I'm so happy I stumbled on to your channel. I completely agree with what you say at the end... comics should be enjoyed for what they are and not just for the speculation or investment value!
still have that swamp thing i saw out of that huge lot? the one that has the American flag in the background? i would love to have it cause i love any comic thats patriotic or has the American flag on it, being that im a veteran. i guess thats why i love Captain America comics so much!
Amazing stories my son just turned two today and he gets so happy when I'm able to sit down and read him comics and he sees all the art of Spider-Man and hulk I feel like he has learned how to talk so well because of reading comics with me I love making these memories and I love hearing others stories!
Glad i found this channel. I can get the feeling of owning comics today because as a kid, i had to read them at the grocery store while my parents shopped. Whatever i got to by the time they finished was all my reading because i couldn't buy them. Great content so far.
It’s amazing what you instilled in your son not that you got that last collection but that you got the collection under one thought and found that thought to be off and you called the original owner to tell him that you owe him more money. That is so cool such a great ethical lesson you taught your son great job.
Fantastic video to start the new year! I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I wish I had your luck in finding such awesome comic books in the wild. The new back wall looks great but it would help us to see the slabs better if you removed their plastic wrapper. Thanks a lot for the content.
Very true point. The Mylar wrappers are nice but the plastic ones are terrible for viewing. I will definitely try to remember to remove them prior to filming next time!
I've pulled over 50 $100.00 plus books out of dollar bins at flea markets and game stores in the last 2 years. Found a wolverine 1 thought I was dreaming.
Man, your Videos are excellent material! Can't get enough of them! Appreciate the content! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to seeing more videos!! God bless...
Man, I really enjoyed your video. Seems like you’re are into a lot of the same things and comics, I was into. I was collector from 1985-1993. I loved the x-men and Spider-Man and Batman comics. I had a few of the early x-men books. My earliest one was was a #27. I sold my collection because kind of outgrew the hobby. Got bored with them and sold them back in 1994. One the best finds, I had was a X-Men at the Texas state fair. Got it at antique store for a couple of dollars. You never go wrong collecting what you love and enjoy.
Happy New Year! Not to get ahead of things but to a point you made early in the vid, if you wanted to do a couple throwback videos next December for 2023, one video like this one and another that's just a "personal favorite books I grabbed," I'd enjoy that. Also, are you hitting Northeast Comic Con in March? It's over in Boxboro MA.
I really should do a “personal favorite comics” video. I’m sure the weather will demand I make one of those at some point! And I haven’t decided yet on Northeast Comic Con but it’s likely I’ll try to make the trip.
I just discovered your channel. I definitely agree with what you said about the hobby mostly being about how much money the books are worth. Your feelings on going out hunting for comics, finding cool comics and then sharing your excitement and love for them with your son and us as well resonated with me. I just love comic books. That's why I'm subscribing to your channel. Keep your love for comics and let us know about it
This is me, you are me. I hunt all spring and summer at all yard sales and flea markets. 90% of my current collection is from those areas. I always put them in one box until the end of the year then I look back on what was the best.
Loved your video! Your channel has become my favorite comic book related channel. I used to live there in New England so it's fun to see all the places you go. You have rekindled my love for finding old comics, too!
You can't tell us about this awesome antique room, then not show it to us.. Not cool man🤨 Just kidding love your channel, it would be cool to see though👍
I hear ya, maybe instead of pulling back the curtain completely, someday I’ll just have to show my ancillary non-comic flea market pickups when I’m out there hunting
You are one the coolest guy collecting comics on RU-vid because you I did score some key books on that store in greenfield mass thanks soo much and keep the good working and collecting…
Did he ever take those slabs out of the plastic sleeves? Aren't the sleeves just to prevent slabs getting scratched when stored pressing up against each other in a box?
Happy new year. Awesome job on growing the channel so quickly. This is the first video I've seen but definitely won't be the last. I love the message at the end. I would actually love to see what your actual favorites are that maybe aren't money makers or popular. That's how my collection is. Almost entirely based on story and cover artworks.
I love how incredibly genuine you are. Your love and passion for the hobby and the community shines through like a lighthouse on a foggy night. Thanks for the content.
I loved listening to the stories of these finds cuz it's not only interesting, but also informative of how others like me and your viewers can come across amazing finds.
It’s awesome that you and your son have this amazing relationship and that you can share this incredible hobby. Loved your list and the stories. Keep it up.
Looks like you had good luck this past year picking up comics! Let’s hope it continues for 2023! It must be tough to make room for all the other things you like to collect! 😁
12 lbs?! It depends where you found it, what fall it is, etc. The rarer the meteorite the more expensive it is, but the price is usually determined in GRAMS. So if you have 12 lbs I’d question first where it’s from
We found it in missouri,we took it to columbia colledge to verify its really from space ,but when found it with a metal dector part of it had crateors with water on it its mostly iron and 9% nickel . Iu can tell it was buned and melted ,high heat.
