My Top 10 Resin Basics & Tips! 

So - I got married a few weeks ago. While I was prepping for the wedding I heard that there were ways to preserve my flowers. On Etsy I saw that people cast flowers in resin for $200+ and thought, “I can do that myself!” Fast forward to me YouTubing how to put a wedding bouquet in resin, and now I’m binge watching all your videos while waiting for all my resin supplies to come in the mail 😂 You’re the best Resin-ist on RU-vid by far. Your creativity, the way you work, the way you teach. And you’re super chill but simultaneously super fun attitude :) Thank you for everything you do!!

You are right about the warm tub of water , it’s a hassle but it does work. If you guys live in colder climates I suggest you give you bottle of resin a warm bath for suggest amount of time . It works great

Thank you for mentioning safety bc not a lot of big resin artists will mention it but it’s so important! I want to add that even if a resin says “low VOC” or “no odor” that doesn’t mean it’s totally safe. If you’re not sure what is in the resin you’re using, google “(your resin brand) safety data sheet” and it’ll give you all the information about protective gear and health hazards. Most resins will mention respirators, gloves, and ventilation. You should always be wearing a respirator and gloves for your health! thanks again 💙

Instead of aiming your heat gun at your cup while mixing, get yourself a candle warming plate from Walmart and sit your cup or whatever you’re mixing in on it for a minute or two before mixing. It works so amazing! I used to warm my epoxy in warm water before pouring into my measuring cup but like you said it’s so messy and so much unnecessary work! The candle warming plate is a game changer!

Heather here is a TIP for you! Get a small & Large LINT ROLLER for clean-up! I use a Largerone for my silicone Mat! ( I have a LoliVefe Mat) and the small one for larger molds!

I've also found those dollar store 500ml measuring cups work great, and I just leave a film of epoxy in the cup and when cured it pops out in nearly one piece making cleanup and reusing them really simple. I also use just one cup though suggestions say to use multiple, I just make sure to scrape the sides to ensure everything is mixed well and also check for "streaks".. I'd also like to add the best Tip I've discovered myself: forget using a heat gun or torch, and get a fine mist spray bottle (often used in salons and/or for hair) with 91% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol to pop the bubbles.. it works like magic.

I am a new fan of yours. I got here because I am getting married and was trying to think of a cool way to preserve my flowers. I have been trying to make coasters and patio stones using cement and obviously the material is not translucent and it was not giving me the results that I wanted (at least for coasters). I have seen people post vids on TikTok and I figured I would look resin up in RU-vid and found your channel. Watching you is helping me learn and has made me really think about trying resin as a medium.

I use a large and x large dog food mat. Has a great edge to catch spills. Good for paint pouring too!

As for warming up the resin. I purchased an inexpensive hot late from Amazon. I turn it on low and place my cup on a silicone coaster mold on the hot plate. And warm my resin that way as I mix it. It definitely makes mixing easier, and has much less bubbles. When I pour my mold I set the mold on the hot plate on the lowest setting possible. And warm the mold that helps with air bubbles as well.

I have literally never touched resin before because I am intimidated (I live in a very small apartment and was worried about safety), but this video helped me so much and I am actually going to try it now thank you!

I want to start making resin bookmarks and keychains. I've been researching all week on how to go about it. I am scared, and a little intimidated tbh. Just ordered a bunch of resin and tools to create some art, so glad i found this before my package comes

In dentistry bubbles are super annoying too, especially when trying to make a plaster cast of someone’s teeth. After we mix the plaster we place the mixture on this little metal plate that vibrates to bring all the bubbles to the top of the plaster. I feel like that method may work pretty well when trying to remove bubbles from mixing! :) also love your videos!!!!!

I put on this video to listen to while I torturously try and remove cured resin specks from all my measuring and mixing cups. And after struggling with one for the first few minutes, I switched to duct tape the moment you mentioned it, and finished more than half a dozen cups during the rest of the video. I LOVED this video!! I've been using resin for a year now to do all kinds of fun things, but I ran into some problems with this or that and wasn't sure why. You answered my questions. Thank you SO, CO much!!!! I wanted to show you some of my work but didn't want to post it publicly. I think you'd like what I do.

My mom has only worn a painters mask ... worked with resin for 35 years. No issues...however, she never did any work inside.... it's only been in a screened in porch with air pull fans.

Thank you for prioritizing/emphasizing the importance of safety!!!!! not enough people take safety seriously! Urethane resins can be especially nasty stuff (as far as i am aware, there is not currently a respirator cartridge that is 100% effective at filtrating them, and a lot of schools ban the use of urethane products on school grounds.)

Q: how do u do this in the winter when it's harder for ventilation? Can't really open the windows in winter. How to stay safest in winter time?

Great tips. I do clean out my measuring cups with 93% alcohol and re-use them but that's because I'll use pretty much every drop of resin. Once the resin is removed I'm able to just wash them with soap and water and then air dry them. I found some silicon mats with a raised triangular texture at a yard sale that are great for doming because any drips fall onto the silicone which is so easy to clean. I also have silicone doming mats from Little Windows. Their prices and shipping costs are good. I like their silicone doming mats even better because of the design.

My first batch of resin was super cheap and kinda yellow. Made it really easy to make mistakes. I also got really small jewelry molds that allowed me to try lots of different techniques without feeling wasteful. Learned lots of lessons, like you said, just do it.

Honestly the best way I’ve seen to get rid of bubbles is a vacuum chamber. I only do thin top coats on my woodwork so it’s overkill, but it would be killer for your bigger projects!

I feel like I've grown as a resin artist because of your videos and willingness to share. And not just sharing the gorgeous pieces you make but sharing the "fails" too. That part is hard for me to rebound from and i think the first video i ever saw of yours was the first resin fails video you made and i remember thinking "wel heck, if she can have a bag fulla fails and still continue on to make gorgeous pieces, i can too!" I love how encouraging you are for people to [safely] just try it. A fail is still a great lesson for what not to do next time. It's a waste and... the heat gun trick to warming the resin while you mix. It's always bothered me to waste a whole sink full of water just to heat up the resin. I love your personality. Recently my children left the nest, got married to a wonderful man who is a police officer , moved to Pagosa Springs, started a new job at the schools, so I needed a hobby to keep me busy while hubby is working. I just got a silicone mat from amazon. It's actually a cat food mat by cat guru, but it has a raised edge, so I thought that would prevent spilling over better than a flat mat.

Hi, i am using for mixing cleaned cups from yoghurts i’ve eaten etc. I could only reccommend :). You would throw them away anyway and like this they can have another purpose :D PS: I absolutelly love your videos and you are gorgeous!

Hello there, I am so glad I found you on here! 🙂😌🙃. I have been wanting to get started working with Resin & Molds. I saw your video on using the Mold Maker and you were saying that it was difficult getting the resin to come out of the mold you made. I know very, very little from the internet only, so don’t think that I am telling you what to do, but I saw a video b4 yours and she was saying that the resin does stick and is difficult to get out. She used I believe a powder and a liquid to paint the liquid with a paint brush several coats and it makes it easier to get the medium out of the mold. She also said when making Chocolate for molding, to spray the mold with a cooking spray and the Chocolates pop right out. I didn’t see you using any of that stuff to help release the items you are making. Like I said, I am strictly using my molds for chocolates so I have not used any of the Silicone Parts A & B. This would be fun making jewelry (I think). I appreciate all your tips with the Mold Maker and all the other mediums also. Thanks for sharing your videos and tips. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas & tell your husband it’s not nice to make silly faces at you, hehehe 🤣. Take care and I will continue to watch for your future tips & Videos. JilliBean

I've only made 5 small jewelry pendants and it took me 3 years to work up the courage to do it because of being intimidated! I did simple resin with glitter pieces and it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be! The only thing I did wrong is use too much glitter because my resin didn't pour into the molds, it plopped!! Lol! Way to much glitter but they turned out awesome! I've been so indecisive about what resin to buy - but you helped me decide! I am going to get CounterCulture DIY resins for sure - and their awesome silver holographic glitter after just watching your husband's UFO video lol!! Thanks to the stick in the cup and tape it’s doable. Just need to find me a proper mask hopefully reasonable price with this pandemic. Can’t wait to see what create next! Great tips! I wish I would have watched this yesterday. I was using alcohol ink yesterday and used a toothpick to swirl it in my molds. Today when I took them out, I noticed the scratches. My heart sank. and I strongly recommend the silicone mats. I have 7 of them. They are such a lifesaver.
