I'm joining the circle with My Top 10 Survival Items. After watching Canadian Prepper, PreparedMind101, Tactical and Outer Limitless do their top 10 Survival Item List RU-vid videos, I wanted to share my thoughts and my Top 10 List.
Awesome video! Also, I love that you give such high praise to the other prepper channels. Nice people are hard to come by these days, so I thought that was really great :) ❤
The extra pair of socks is perfect. I carry some myself. However, I prefer a good machete to the camp axe if I have to choose between the two. Although I do carry a saw, my choice for a machete is the Gerber Gator Jr. which also has a saw back. I find it to be far more versatile (it batons great!) and more safe to use, as well as being a welcome redundancy. I live in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), in the coastal area of Washington state. For those who don't know, this is a tsunami zone. Note that a tsunami here will be caused by a large subduction zone earthquake. When (not if) this happens, I plan on meeting others at the top of the nearest 100+ foot hill who might not have equipment, and we can survive together if the tasks of survival can be shared through these redundancies. "Many hands make light work."
Extra socks and underwear are both big pluses when combating fungus, sores, chapping/chafing, and general hygiene. Speaking of which, a bar of soap can be used to wash out socks and underwear as well as keeping sensitive areas clean. Something to consider. Good planning on your top ten list Suburbanite.
Good job...a tarp or such would be a item that I do not go without..a quick shelter is on my top 3...all that fire and no shelter is a long sleepless night and the average person has not practiced woodcraft enough to build a quick shelter.Tried with and without a tarp on 2 identical overnighters in rain and cold on northwest Vancouver Island...all present ( 4 of us ) agreed...even a large orange garbage bag or such is a potential life saver along with other potential uses...signal,water catchment,etc... Again good job!!
thekolakovics Honesty In Reporting is rare. Thank you. A shelter half or poncho is necessary. Thanks for your opinion and geography to make your point about weather. Most people never mention LOCATIONS.
If you use vicks to make your “vaseline cotton balls” you can use them in a pinch to treat sore hiker feet at night and can still use them later for starting a fire.
This is the first time I have seen one of these, survival items list, with a firearm in it. Lonnie from Northern Bushcraft and Survival does as well. I think it is a very over looked item, that is at the top of my list. It looks like a very realistic list to me. The bad folks are going to have firearms, and they won't stop just because you wave a big knife at them lol! Enjoyed the video.
I personally would rather a #1 head lamp, both hands are always free. And I would trust my life to a #2 full tang knife, hence why i got the GSO 4.7 Funny you should mention #3 wool sock and a #4 med kit. I purchased mine through Precision Riffle supply (Field Trauma kit) #5 40 0Z Klean Kanteen with nesting cup. I also have the #6 Leatherman Surge and I'm a #7 Wetterlings kinda guy myself I like to go tool heavy.. #8 Fire kit most def ,#9 Cordage is a must 1LB roll or #36 Bankline , And # 10 a 5x7 Snugpack Stasha Tarp I don't trust grommets but this one has tie out's as well Great video thanks for sharing
You need to take the saw or axe and out a tarp in there you might have a way to build a shelter but what is going to keep you dry you need a tarp in your top 10
The number 1 priority for survival is shelter, as in one hour you can be dead from hypothermia, and heat stroke kills, so..... a tarp or tent or bivy is a must for me.
I certainly agree with your choice of shotgun over a 22. The only downside to a shotgun in my view is that your ammo will weigh much more than a block of 22. I know that you limited yourself to10 items but I would include a tarp and waterproof matches in your fire yet. I would also include several pair of Wool socks packed and I dry sack. Take care
great video brother and I agree with everything you said except for your weapon of choice. I prefer a Rossi youth 22 for a bug out situation. you can bring down anything with the 22 Long Rifle hollow point even a deer. but other than that I agree wholeheartedly. the reason I would choose the Rossi youth is it is so compact and easy to carry. and you can carry so much more ammunition then you can those Academy 12 gauge shells God bless have a wonderful day
Something of concern for everyone should be our loved ones. Do they ALL have gear packed and ready if and when systems break down nation wide and the armed gangs are coming up the street, house to house? If we can shoot, so can they. People will need to be ready to get out fast with a light portable pack, women and children included, to move inconspicquesly to a rondevue point. It isn't enough for one family member to be ready, everyone has to be and have the ability to get to that predetermined safe location. It's a subject worth considering that I haven't seen addressed in any youtube video I've run across concerning survival in a crises. I like your choices here and the good solid advice. We can all learn from your example. Thanks partner.
AWESOME JOB! There is a bit I might change, but I'm in the desert which judging by your items I'm guessing you are in the woods. I have to say you have pretty great ideas.
Thats a good list. I like the shotgun. If we are talking strictly top 10 maybe I would replace the Axe with a spool of cordage. Now if we are not restricted cordage and a tarp would come right next along with everything you showed.
I would go with a Ruger mark, 22 pistol. Small game , or even a deer size with shot placement. You can carry 500 rounds like nothing . Perfect for handy self defense also.
great list. Well thought out. I'm going to disagree with the folks finding the tarp so crucial. While it would be nice and a time saver, with an axe and a saw, you can most certainly build an adequate shelter for a night in a wooded environment. As far as the firearm debate, depending on what the 500 is loaded with (birdshot, buckshot, slugs, etc.) you pretty much can't go wrong and that in turn increases its versatility. The upshot is, if you have to defend yourself from the two legged variety threat, I'll take a scatter gun over a mouse gun all day long. Excellent video and thanks for sharing.
Great ideas and valid points. The shotgun is a great tool. What I would change is the flash light. It is an expendable item because of the batteries. What I would suggest is a solar flash light or a hand cranked flash light radio combo. Very versatile and can help you listen to what is going on. Other than that, great items. The socks were smart. I too recommend socks (wool, not cotton) as I too have had rotten foot before in the sandbox. It was horrible.
the saw and axe might be a redundancy, i would recommend a tarp or any sort of.canvass that would be a waterproof. in case you need a quick shelter. a 4x4 or 6x4 meter of canvass is handy enough. a dry and warm body always keeps the spirit and moral high. having to live in a tropical country, i say it is a musthave.
There are many of components to survival. One resource I found that successfully combines these is the Survivor Crusher System (check it out on google) definately the most incredible survival website that I've seen. look at the extraordinary free video.
*Saw and axe is a minimum must have. Ever try sleeping under a 6×4 or 4×4 tarp especially in the rain? Unless you're a midget you're gonna have a bad day.* 👎
There are five main survival priorities in terms of importance: shelter, water, fire, orientation, food. Excellent list, but I didn’t see your tent, it makes sense to add a space blanket.
Well thought out and presented. The core of my own Get Home Bags mirror your own as bare essentials for survival. Being somewhat lacking in mobility, it will probably take me longer and require a lot more effort to get home, these core items will give me options for survival at a reduced pace.
1. First aid kit with scissors etc. 2. Shelter kit and warm wool clothing. hat bandana gloves flash light .3. Water filter and gallon canteen tube straw and big baloons and muslin sack.water botthe. 4. Saw axe or hatchet shovel and Weapon bear spray fishing pole or walking stick net fishing kit traps snares knife spear point or fork to screw on walking stick elastic bands and shot.5 food.
I modified 4 pieces of cover to enable me to handle 120F down to near zero temps, with no fire (given the right clothing) I used velcro seams, a draw string at the neck and in the hood of a modified SOL escape bivvy, reflectorized tyvek (outside layer) regular tyvek, and a heavy duty space blanket. the regular tyvek bag is used in between they heavy duty space blanket/bag and the SOL bag. The inside bag is breathable, but only reflects back 75% of your body heat. It and the Tyvek seal out the condensation that you get from the space blanket-bag. I have some bubble wrap, a bag made of bugnetting, , a monofilament gillnet-hammock, some cordage, some plastic stakes. Total weight about 5 lbs, to include the clear plastic needed to make a super shelter and the small roll of duct tape needed to seal everything in place. I have no need of a regular sleeping bag, nor a sleeping pad. None of my gear is effected by its getting wet, there's no zippers to jam or break, no stuffing to leak out. A tear or hole in anything is patched easily with a chunk of tape on each side. I can just lay down in the rain/wind, mud and be unaffected. I can toss and turn all I want, and I can't get off of the sleep gear, or get it off of me. But if it's not cold enough to need it all, all can be opened flat for use as tarps, rain catches, or 1 or more bags can be so set up, , while 1 or more can retain their bag configurations. There's nothing to get too compressed, and it all rolls up to become the "frame" of my 2 lb pack.
take that number with a grain of salt james they say "up to" which means they could be testing on the nastiest water they can find or using it on a cities tap system when up to is included in a statement..esp with really high numbers it's best to assume they're stretching
I fell down the outside door steps I was there 30 mins nohbody see me. I fell crossing a low cable fence about 2 feet high hurt shoudler for 3 months. I buy salt these day for the steps. I enjoyed your vid its true survive gear. My father taught how survive in the wood and make tea in the woods. We took a 410 with slug and shoots. An axe. My grandfather taught how to find water.
Great kit. I'll check out your channel. I'd probably replace a couple items with bankline and a tarp but we'd have similar picks. I think you're right about the shotgun. Its the better choice for shorter term survival because it does more and the .22 is better for longer term because of less ammo weight.
Good list of products, tarp or some other tipe of quick shelter is of great value too, as thekolokovics said before me. Other than that, the materials laying on the table are all still shiny, Altough I don't want to question your experience, I personnely think every item you put in your survivalbag, should be tested in the field in the way your going to use it when you NEED too. It's a lot of work building a shelter out of nothing, and being a gardener and having had a month long survival course, I still managed to put the axe in my leg, because of fatigue and other circumstances. luckely I had some TRAINING in the emergency dep. as wel and had my kit on the side of my pack for quick acces, if you are curious, yes I hit an arteri, but practice and time in the field saved the day. of course, the kit you carry is essential, but don't rely only on that This was not specificly directed to you, but maybe something to concider for other people too
I had to modify my shelter/sleeping/clothing system. I had to add a rainsuit, and a hunk of bubble wrap. Now there's 5 layers of velcro seamed bags around me. The inside one is regular tyvek. Next is a modified, "breathable' SOL escape bivvy. then the bubble wrap, then another plain tvek, and then the heavy duty space blanket bag. All can be sealed up over my head, but for a small breathing hole. With a couple of sets of longjohns, a shemaugh, bandana, rainsuit, ski mask, ski gloves, 2 pairs of polypro socks, 2 pairs of wool socks and one pair of gore tex socks, and different configurations, I'm good from 120F down to near zero F, without a fire. Given a fire, I can handle near arctic conditions, as long as my bodyfat and the firewood hold out. total weight of the setup is under 8 lbs, to include a gillnet hammock, the stakes, tieoffs, tree straps, bugnet-bag, Even in summer, you'll need at least 3 lbs of "extra" clothing, sleep and shelter gear. For 5 lbs more, to get 50F more degrees of safety and comfort, is something to be proud of!
I like it - I’ve listed a few tweaks (but of course a lot of this is environment considerations and personal preference): Socks in a Ziplock freezer bag...best to seal up anything you don’t want to get wet. Nice fire kit, similar to mine, keep that dry too! As far as a choice in firearm I’d say an AR-15 is more versatile than a 12-gauge. Long range, big boom, stopping power, can hunt with it, higher round capacity and you can shorten the AR up on the fly for CQB/clearing and such. I like your small blade choice, very nice holster with built-in sharpener, but speaking of blades - To have both, a big/heavy axe and a long gun to lug around seems like it could be limiting. Instead of the axe I’d go with a good machete (with 1000 denier) sheath (and striker rod) instead of the axe, Gerber makes a few that I couldn’t possibly speak better of 💪💪 Then, since the right machete also does fine work chopping down trees/limbs, I’d ditch the folding saw and bring cordage for use in a shelter (and a thousand other things). I keep a shelter via my first aid kit - An insulated orange/silver emergency blanket w/ grommets. I like the water setup, I got basically the same filter and Stainless container. Very well done overall 👍 🔥
Late late comment but... Like many others I’d suggest a proper shelter. In a fixed camp situation it’s ok to make a shelter once and use it night after night, but if you’re having to move regularly that’s a lot of calories spent on shelter building. A warm sleeping bag and mat allow a good night’s sleep even if fire is too difficult to maintain all night or if it’s unwise to reveal your position.
shotguns have a number of different rounds but are very large, and short range not to mention the weight of the rounds and the shotgun, I personally would go with the 22 if there was only 1 weapon For long term. home defence I would probable go with a shot gun.

I like your kit the best from the others...makes more sense to me for the "situation"...but being a small 90lbs female & being ill, I will have to "adjust" some things. for weight. Sir, thank you for your post! My father would agreed with you too! He was a Vietnam marine and taught me well. I took a "corporate" class in survival and in 30 yrs the former special forces soldier/teacher never had anyone that got all but 1 survival items in order of importance like I did...I will still stand with the ONE item in the order of importance to this day though...haha! Bare minimum a tarp and sleeping pad. I backpack with a hammock set up as I personally value getting off the ground highly plus I find it way more comfortable. There are also a number of backpacking tents. They weight in around 5lbs and a nice Kelty cost about $100. Ultra light (cuban fiber) tents run $500+. If you want to stay warm a sleeping bag is the easiest option. Some people like wool blankets (nostalgia) but they do not perform anywhere near as well as a sleeping bag though they are somewhat flame retardant. A fleece blanket will preform slightly better than wool and cost less than $20. I personally use a down blanket. It cost $100 but it is very warm (personally down to 30F with it) and only weighs a little over a pound. The "armchair" survivalist crowd champions a lot of mylar products (think space blankets) and the material does have some valid uses but it is a terrible primary shelter or warmth option. I've tried a couple of bivvys and very few things are worse than being cold and sweating at the same time.
Elizabeth UnicornMom A 2 person backpacking tent would suffice for shelter. However I do not really think “bugging out” is practical with a toddler. I have a 2 year old so I get it. You need so much in the way of clothes, sanitation, entertainment, etc. that you will be wildly overloaded. My daughter will walk on trails for about a half mile before it’s game over and she needs to be carried. I would focus on your home first. Have a couple weeks of food and water, first aid, basic tools, and a way to keep warm if you are in a cold weather region. Then focus on having a car kit. This is a more realistic “bug out” situation. Most disasters that would cause an evacuation you will be leaving by car. A car kit encompasses the types of emergencies that would result: Break downs, grid lock, lack of supplies/space in surrounding areas.
Para troops who liberated the Falkland Islands in 1982 like to tell the story of how they only packed 3 things: 1. Ammo 2. Rations 3. Socks Bit of a tall story but it does illustrate your point about looking after your feet. Good clear presentation. Ive subbed.
I would say remove either the saw or axe and replace it with a wool blanket. Having both is nice, but you can get by with one or the other. But a wool blanket will save you if it gets cold.
Carry More than one knife in case something happens to the one you're useing, it pays to have a back-up. Personally when i go off into the woods i have more knives than you can shake a stick at, same with ways to make fire.
First aid kit is ok in some situations but i do construction and haven't used bandaids in 15 years. Only use asprin once every 6 months. Cuts? I use electrical tape.

A tarp in place of the axe. You have a saw and knife, so you can make a wedge for batoning fire wood. A tarp gives you quick shelter and is lightweight. Add a piece of plastic and make a Super Shelter to stay warm in the coldest weather. Nice job with your video. Thanks.
This is a good list and well thought out, but I think that the original idea of the 10 Favorite Items list was to comply with the 10 items allowed on the Discovery series "Alone," which would limit you to only 1 ferro rod, no firearm, and no water purification kit. Also, the wool socks, flashlight, and first aid kit are provided without having to be considered within the list. That would leave you at least 5 or 6 additional items to be included on your list.
Great list - I absolutely agree with the socks - I also have foot powder rolled inside the socks. Only one area where I would do it a little different from you. For me, I would ditch the axe and replace it with a fish gill net
I wold like to. Ugget a NATA Japanese ax for senior citizens. It’s. Is lighter and easier to use than an ax in my opinion. I also suggest a Crossmman pump handle pellet gun for small game. It is quiet and deadly. Add the rifle stock for better control.
You all so need a poncho with liner and Paracord and snare wire and a fishing kit . from Glenn catt babe faces number one. Fishing kit will fit in your fire kit a back pack.
solid advice on the extra socks ! way to often over looked . my dad was infantry in Vietnam 68-69 , he pounded that in my head from birth , take care of them feet !!

Always dress according to the environment you're in, as for gear well that's also determined by the environment too, I'm a city dwellers and agree with most of the kit. only the water filter and shotgun are different to my daily carry, but people need to learn what's appropriate for their location. great selection for most cities.
Great video ! A good basic start would be a Day Pack with "The Ten Essentials" by the Seattle Mountaineers. A Day Pack will keep you safe overnight and bring you home the next day. With an Axe or Weapon you will need a Trauma Kit ! And a First Aid Kit for the small stuff. tjl
The Mora Black is a good knife. I love my Mora, but I've always been weary of knives that came with sharpening stones. The stones seem cheap to me. I don't know how the stone on the Mora Black is, and I guess it's better than nothing. I'd just rather have a dedicated sharpener.

If we are talking about Survival the most important thing is carrying all that stuff. The medical kit is too large, a few pills and bandages with antibiotics will do. No need for a fire kit when a lighter and a Fero rod on your Mora is enough. I was in the Army and can tell you after three days the socks are just a comfort item I never used (yes I got trench foot but I survived). A flashlight should have a night vision of a red or green lens and a low beam. I like the Sawyer you don't need the flush plunger. I like the Mora and prefer the Bahco saw because of size. A 32oz bottle with water already in it. A cup is not necessary. No thanks on the axe, heavy and can be dangerous. I can fit all that I described inside a Maxpedition Fatboy. If you're limiting it to 10 items rather than a rifle, I would say you are going to need a Poncho/Tarp. You are more likely to die of hypothermia than in a gun battle. And I am estimating 3 days max for survival. You will need more gear for longer. (Love a Mossberg)
I think the 20 gauge is better because it's lighter, more shells, plus you can always use magnums that would match 12 gauge (in case it's bear country); plus they're easier to handle.
Silenced, shorty AR15 in 223, with a scope in a see thru mount, , trigger job, luminous iron sights, and a Ciener .22lr conversion unit. NVD goggles, with a solar charger. Condor E tool, modified to have a 6" saw edge. Modified Crunch multitool, with Huuyman saw blade to be held in the visegrip of the crunch. My 8 lb kit of sleep, shelter/clothing gear, which lets me handle 10F to 120F, without a fire, starting with summer wear. This includes a bug net and gillnet-hammock. With a fire, I can handle Arctic condtions. A Sawyer water filter, with bag, and backflush-syringe, my fire kit, medical kit, possibles bag (soap, bug dope, sewing items, tape, wire, and a nested titanium cooking kit. This entire idea is silly, really. All a carryable kit can possibly do is get you to your cached stuff and your dugout. If shtf, the woods will be full of desperate, well-armed people, many of whom will shoot you on sight! Being out and about during daylight hours will be a death sentence. So will making noise, sending up smoke during daylight, or showing a light at night.
Trench foot/foot rot is hell! I must agree, fresh socks are like gold! I would take fresh socks over tp and I always take tp! I have two changes of socks in my bag at all times!

But you don't always have to carry these three. Too much reliance on what you carry is bad. Never carry anything you can find or build. I carry water in a stainless steel container, but only a small amount of water. I also carry a small amount of food. I don't carry a shelter. Shelter is something you need to be able to build.
Valid statement depending on some situations. In my common everyday environment money is the survival tool I carry. ( City dweller). Usually 1 to 10 miles from home
You’re right, deciding on a gun to carry in this situation is difficult. I considered a shotgun but rejected it because of ammunition. The bulk and weight of shotgun ammunition is so large you can only carry a few rounds. I went with the Henry lever action carbine in 22 Magnum. That gives me more range and power than a 22 long rifle and still keeps the ammunition size and weight down to the point where I can carry about 200 rounds. Since I made that decision Henry has come out with the same gun in 223. I may change to that. I Figure I can still pack 100 rounds of 223 ammunition and that gives me a big increase in range and hitting power. Don’t know, I’m still with a 22 Magnum, maybe I’ll change. As you say choosing a gun is difficult.
+Randy Bone- From the looks of you, all you're going to need Randy, is a Hilton Rewards Club Card and some chiropractic care. It won't matter if you're wandering aimlessly in the field or staying in a hotel. Leave the survival stuff to us young 'uns... Class dismissed.
Love your talk.. Only a few things I would add. 1 A foil fordable sleeping bag or two they don't take up any room and your dry and worm. 2 A foil tent or two for shelter, your out of the rain or sun. And again they don't take up any room. Para cord, you decide how much. It can be raped around other items you all ready carry. It's great for making a tent , drying wet close, attach a knife to a wood shaft for a spear you will find many many uses for it. Again takes up very little room and is light weight. You must keep you bug out bag as light weight as possible If you can't carry it to your destination it ant worth shit to you. Just my opinion. Crossdrawjohn.

Excellent job... I' d include Bathroom Tissue a well- if you can fit it in w/ your First Aid Kit, you'll still "technically" remain at the original list of ten.
you guys get it all wrong #1 is a bible don't underestimate faith #2 a good survival guide all that knowledge in a little book is way more important than any one item showed
Doesn't matter how strongly I believe in God, I ain't gonna replace a survival item with a book unless its the SAS Survival Guide. My God doesn't want me to trade shelter, fire or water or an IFAK for a book.
The possibility of having a good Book, for morale and guidance, shouldn't be underestimated. You can find pocket sized New Testaments, mostly for free. That, and Lofty Weissman's Guide, would be perfect( he has a pocket carry Survival Manual)
Good kit, shotguns are great...however. a good accurate .22 is the way I would go. You can carry 550 rounds of .22 in the same space as 25 rounds of 12 gauge. And shotguns are load as #$&@. In my honest opinion. Thanks for the video.
I live in the city of Baltimore, and I would have to bug out to the county 90 miles away. I would add that list a two person all weather tent and sleeping arrangements. I will change the shot gun for a pump action pellet rifle for game. My M1A SOCOM 16B for protection against bad guys.
Good job. Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts on what you think you'll need in a survival situation. On the weapons/food procurement front, I may take a single shot 12 gauge and a .22 pistol.
awesome video great items and your the first to suggest socks which should be in everyones bag at all times weather EDC BOB or any bag you have because you never know when you might need to change them socks
... There are many over/under firearms out there... Don't see many videos on them though ,,, .22/20 gauge ,, .22 mag /20 gauge ,, 30-30/20 or 12 gauge and many more combinations ... surprised that they have been overshadowed so much ...
No one is leaving home with only 10 items. That said, if this limit was set you do not need to bring a water filter. It has a limited life span and when it dies so do you. You doubled up in this area; all you need to do is boil water to drink it. Limited to 10, I would not waste my choice bringing a flashlight. Settle in early, make a fire, wake at dawn. A knife is an absolute must and if you put a pouch on your sheath it can include a sharpener and fire starter. bringing all that tender when you are in a forest is unnecessary. Instead of the saw and axe, I bring a Condor Machete. You have my vote for the socks, s.s. water bottle (should be a combination stove and cup) and IFAK. You left out food, enough to get you through a few days until you get your land legs is worth it. Lastly, a sleeping bag or wool blanket and a tarp. (I use a nylon tarp which folds up smaller and is lighter to carry. I love seeing so much interest in survival. Best to you. Author of "The Prepper's Book of Ideas."
My input is to store your bag in the car. Not your home. Things can go bad at any time. So flexibility for availability matters. A small with you is better than a large kit ten miles away
Are you packing all that in case you need it because you are stranded or because you may need to disappear and bug out? How are you carrying this stuff, on a 4 wheeler? What about dried soup, tea etc
Looks like most of the items you could get at Walmart or Home Depot. Bass Pro Shops too. These are great though, and made for the average person, not someone who thing but they're in the Zombie apocalypse. Interesting that #10 is a shotgun? So many preppers and survivalist's, think that you need an AR-15 or something like that. Thank you, sir for a good thought out survival kit.
