You covered everything perfectly. I quit the cake business for pretty much every reason you covered in this video. I lost money on every single cake. I was too shy to assert myself and stand behind the value of my work. I miss the beauty of creating wonderful cakes. Wish I'd had known back then a better way to handle it all. I'm sure this video can help lots of newbies! Thanks for sharing!
Believe me I know the feeling! Indo cakes much more so now for myself and my own enjoyment and creativity, which makes it so much more enjoyable. Maybe you should try the same! Give it another shot :) thanks so much for watching!!
Ya this is really helpful to me bcuz I just started my home bakery .......thank you so much for the tips ......we only have one cake shop in our place .........
You are so on point in feeling bad when you give a price they think it's too high and you end up discounting your work, selling yourself short and end up feeling low self worth. I feel like quiting. Thanks so much for sharing the same feelings we all go thru.
I just opened up my business Would love you to do a detailed video on 1. Pricing 2. The process of cake making like how to store a cake during winter and Summer, fondant how to roll them so that they don’t show cracks, any hacks. I do the fondant decor in advance but if its a big decir that needs bending sometimes it breaks How can it be avoided Hope you will help us out
Asma, You are right on point with this advice. I would say if you're going to make it a business treat it like one. I myself have only treated it as a hobby, or as my art outlet. It is the one medium I could let my perfectionism go, and not worry about it.
Thank you SO much for your info/video. It was great hearing you say just how it is. I am contemplating on starting up my own cake making/decorating business from home and your information has given me a lot of know how confidence to may be do this
Great tips, Asma!! Having confidence in my skills AND being able to say no to free or discounted cakes (especially family and friends and the extended networks haha) is so hard for me! I’m working on it :|
I practice on my family cakes its was just my time I had to spend on them (they provide everything) and because of that and the reaction from the ones I do it for that made me love cake decorating that's why I am considering going into cake business (I'm doing a long long long thinking)
It is a great way to start and that's how most of us start! Just make sure that as you move into making it a real business, you start charging for your cakes :)
Asma Qureshi I do charge for some if they are from someone other than my family ( my family sort of advertised me anytime they are talking to someone so I always get a phone call from one of them telling that someone wants to order a cake form me) Love them to bits lol
Thanks for sharing it’s really helpful, can you please tell me how you make your basic vanilla sponge cake that is going to be covered with fondant? Everything including What kind of cream and syrup you use? Thanks ahead
Love the intro!! Also love the honesty...will def make me think twice before I try to ask for a discount when buying a cake... appreciate the effort from cake makers even more
OH May GOD ....it was like watching myself talk .I totally saw myself in you ( kinda freaked me out a little bit lol ) . I went through everything u just said and I totally agree with everything aswell. ... who knew I had a sister from another mother 😎😁... I love your cakes and this video was like an eye opener again to me - to know my worth . So Thank you !❤
Lol I'm sure a lot of people have gone through this same thing! If only RU-vid existed when I started. Truth is even knowing this stuff I still make the same mistakes all the time! At least we aren't alone :) thanks for watching!! ❤️
Oh my god ...ur totally creeping me out again ...in a very good way of course lol😁. I have been baking forever since I was a kid. Straight after college I got into business with my two aunts but never got paid a penny ( as I was living under their roof .they took care ever since we were little So I never questioned myself why I wasn't paid my due for all the hard work I put into ). That went on for close to five to six years without pay but I dedicated myself on the works because I had so much passion in me for baking . Later the business shut down which opened the doors to open my own business . It's been 7 years now running my own business and like u mentioned we surely do make all those mistakes all over again lol ...surely we are not alone 😊. Thank you once again .... wishing you the very best aswell and yes , no more free cakes 🤣🤣🤣. Damn I tell that to myself all the time but never works 😥
Hi Asma, I am starting my cake business in a few days, it really helped me. I want to ask few questions. I always find it difficult in summers to store or even make a cake. How to do it? How to price my cakes? How to pack a cake? Thank you.
Hi Sana! Making cakes in the summer time is definitely a difficult task!! Especially delivery! You just have to make sure your AC is on all the way, make sure your car AC is on and cool before you get into the car, and make sure the cake isn't for an outdoor party (if it is, you'll have to keep it indoors until you have to cut the cake). I will try and make a video on pricing cakes in the near future and maybe even how to deliver a cake. Thanks for the suggestion!
Now THAT is my BIGGEST struggle...man learning this youtube world has definitely been the hardest! I will most definitely take you up on that offer! :)
I would love for you to make a video on pricing cakes! I starting teaching myself to decorate cakes 7 months ago as a new year resolution and it has been an amazing journey! I planned on taking a full year of learning/practicing different techniques and doing cakes for my family (who are all very supportive). I'm only half way through my "learning year" and ive made an Instagram, @backcountrycustumcakes , to show off my work and I'm already getting requests for non-family customers 👏 my problem... I have NO idea how to charge for my cakes and what my "self-worth" is! This video would be so helpful. I think you are very talented and i enjoy following your social media pages ☺ thank you!
Love your intro......plz can u make a number cake like 3....I am only thirteen (girl) and I want to make the cake for my lil bro's birthday.....plzzzzz
Thanks hun! I don't know if I can make a number 3 anytime soon, but you can probably rent a pan that's the number 3 or just cut out the number 3 from the cake! There's lots of tutorial out there on number cakes. Thanks so much for watching!
