I have so much respect for trainers that will get on and ride your horse to help you see how they apply the aids and explain what they experienced. Kudos to Justine for her consistent advice and well done to you Lucy, you seem relieved and reassured (rightly so) that you’ve got this. I haven’t jumped in years and was never very good at it but I can see that Laragh is forward going and can take over that she demands constant courage and clear leadership from you (easier said than done). I loved this quickie update, thanks to you and Justine for being so open and willing to share your learning with us.

Thanks so much Natalie! I totally agree, it’s so helpful seeing justine ride her, she’s not the most straight forward ride you’re right, so sometimes I need to take a step back and reevaluate my tactics! Thanks for watching 🙏

I asked my trainer to ride my horse because I was struggling with lateral movements (we were teaching her she really didn’t know how to do it) well she went crazy when my trainer got on wanted to rear and stuff. This reminded me how hard my mare is to ride 😂.. looks easy when I’m on her because we know each other perfectly 😅

But I prefer a trainer who tried and realizes how hard it is .. then a trainer who doesn’t even try to see what’s going on under saddle

Justine did a great job. Boxy canter yes but forward going. She also seemed to ride leaning slightly forward herself. You did amazing too. I wonder if a bit more dressage may help to get Lara listening to your aides more. It helped my friends horse immensely, thoroughbred and always in a rush.lol I didn't realise your close to Forest Egde, I go to dog shows there. Looking forward to the next training session. 🙂❤

@@NoThankUBeQuiet yep because the horse is natural and doing what she wants, I'm training a green broke tb now and I let her go where she wants then give the cues and aids for that so she is not bracey and she eventually will realize the aids and be light and willing when I ask her to do turns etc ...its a process

I binge watched ALL of the Back To Basics series today and I loved watching yours and Lara's evolution throughout your episodes! I'm quite new to watching your videos so hadn't appreciated your struggles with your own confidence as a rider - I hope you feel comfortable to go back and watch what I saw today and remind yourself of what you can achieve! This was a great video 😁

I love justine! I teach in the north east of the US, i would have told you to do exactly the same, she is so in tune with what a horse needs, and i agree she probably over rode her a bit, but it was necessary for her to give lara the correction she needed. My mare would flip over with anything but a snaffle in, but shes a forward ride(shes also a paint) you must ride her with a shorter rein, keep her head up, but find place to soften so you are not hanging on her all the time, but most importantly ride with tons of leg, shes not a chipper luckily but, she will drag you down if you dont keep leg on. I can see how much you learned, its so counter intuitive to pur leg on but it keeps them coming through from behind and under themselves, and uphill which helps keep them from hanging on you. You will keep improving and you will get out of this funk.

This was so interesting, Lucy. Thank you so much for continuing to take us with you to your trainer. Really amazing the progression I can see as your trainer rides her and then you. By the end, you were really directing Laragh so clearly and brought all the elements together so much better for the two of you. I never doubted you, so it was interesting to see how much head flinging and "fighting" Laragh was doing with your trainer, and just how she really is a more challenging ride than she may look/seem. But once Laragh got the hang of it more and then you followed through in the same manner, it really created better technique and continuity for you and Laragh. She may not seem like she wants too much direction, but once it's applied consistently (and kindly, as you properly point out) then she accepts it and you have the overall improvement that you had by the end. I absolutely love this kind of video; and even better is that you're doing it as a series of three. Really looking forward to the next one and then seeing you taking Laragh back out eventing. You are a brave and generous rider, Lucy. I so appreciate your sharing your riding with us.

Everything that your trainer said about your horse, is EXACTLY what my horse does\ needs. If I dont get him up in front of me and collected, he chips in or jumps flat . He gets pretty strong and starts pulling down if I dont ride him uphill the whole time! Great job you two!! 🙂🐎

Really needed to see this. First event in 3 years is this weekend and I have had some recent showjumping struggles as well. I'm going to visualize your position and the balance, rhythm and pace of your canter! I really struggle with the concept of "staying out of their way" to the point that I do nothing and things fall apart. I have to remember to set my horse up for success, keep him there and then get out of his way. You rode so well! Very inspiring!

I used to do a similar thing whenever i missed the stride and I would completely freeze. and I used to think sitting still is what I was supposed to do especially when it came to related distances. if I missed the distance to the first element I was supposed to sit, hold on and not interfere and let the horse figure it out because I had already messed up. LOL The one thing I learned that changed my whole riding was to do the opposite. exactly what your trainer is telling you. don't become a passenger. i can remember my old trainer like it was yesterday yelling at me: "JUST REACT!!!!!! DO SOMETHING!!" IIf you miss the stride to the first element of a related distance or a combination the rest of the striding is going to be messed up too. the worst thing you can do is just sit there. in that moment you need you either hold and add a full stride or leg leg leg to catch up. That one silly thing changed my whole riding. and it took me years to figure out. I'm one of those "blind as a bat, can't see a distance if they paid me" kind of rider. XD I just LOVE you and Laragh.
