My traumatic birth experience 

As a labor and delivery nurse, I always tell my patients “I trust you and your body more than any monitor” and I’m sorry your nurse didn’t advocate for you! I hope you can heal from this traumatic experience and bond with your daughter ❤

I'm in tears. They almost killed this woman and her baby. I can't imagine how hard her postpartum recovery has been. God bless her, her baby, and her family.

I was born at 29 weeks 40 years ago. My mother had a heart attack and her lungs filled with fluid while trying to keep me inside of her. For 2 weeks, she gasped for every breath. She was always my biggest warrior. I lost her in 2021 to Alzheimer's. I will always be grateful for her and how much she loved and fought for my life. Your daughter will feel the same way about you. Sara, I think this is malpractice. A missed diagnosis of staph infection (the system sepsis of staph must have a source) led to that unnecessary laparoscopic operation. The abdominal procedure induced your pre-term labour. The doctors and nurses were not ready/prepared for your labour. All there could have been avoided.

People become so reliant on tech that they don't use their common sense. Thanks grandma for getting her the help she OBVIOUSLY needed.

Birth is so wild. - We've had two planned C-Sections - I think its awesome you shared your story! I'm glad all three of you are doing good!

I have heard hundreds if not thousands of birth stories and i have never been more upset than i am having heard this. I cannot believe the absolute disgusting neglect from that hospital. Just. Wow.

Goodness gracious, this is the most horrific birth story I've ever heard. You should have never had to go through what you did at the hands of that arrogantly reckless nurse and that unbelievably incompetent doctor. The level of negligence is just beyond horrifying, and I'm so sorry that you all had to go through that. I sincerely hope that they were both properly dealt with - as nobody should ever have to go through what you had to. I wouldn't be surprised if you are dealing with some PTSD in the aftermath of all that. You are certainly a warrior and your baby girl is beyond precious. I was a labor and delivery nurse for 36 years and I am absolutely appalled at the way you were treated. I cannot imagine seeing a woman who is clearly laboring and looking at the monitor and saying “you’re not contracting.”. You were treated terribly. By people who have no business being around laboring women.

Absolutely insane. A “congrats” doesn’t feel appropriate for surviving a near-death experience. Your little Baby Peach is so lucky to have you and your family.

No part of that ever sounded silly. I sounded real and traumatic. I now understand why people often call mothers warriors, you absolutely deserve that title. Wishing all the best to you and your family, your mom and husband gave their all and did amazing by the sounds of it.

Hi Sara. I am a Student Registered Nurse with an interest in Midwifery from Australia. First of all, I want to thank you so very much for sharing your story. You are so incredibly strong and I am so glad you and your family are well. But second, I am SO incredibly sorry you had to go through this. So much of what you went through is textbook 101 do NOT put a patient through this. I am so very hopeful that you are able to heal from this experience. I had a very similar experience at 27 weeks. My baby was stillborn, but they didn't know that, I kept being sent home and ended up having an unmedicated Vag birth on a remote military base where I was the only woman in the room and the transition stag - where the feet first emerged, lasted 5 hours. I had the need to recount my story in detail for a long time afterwards. 5 years later, I had a C-section for a breach, and another 5 years later, a V-back at Home. Both kids are now in their 30s and turned out wonderful! But when your video started I had major flash backs to that experience and understand your need to share your experience. Enjoy your baby and many well wishes for your future!

Former lab tech at a Children's hospital. So, so, so incredibly proud of you and your husband and mom for keeping you and your baby safe. Sepsis is totally not cool, especially during pregnancy. So glad for Jeannie and her standing up for you in your pain, and for John and his calm with you when you needed it most. My daughter was born a few weeks early, and a high bilirubin and a few days under some UV lights pales in comparison to your ordeal. Thank you so, so, so, so much for the courage to share with everyone. You could have played it off as a simple thing, and you really gave everyone the real you. Didn't expect to be cutting onions for the past hour, but it is totally worth it. Hopefully others will be able to stand up for themselves in similar circumstances. I cannot convey how proud I am of you and how much I hope this helps other mothers in the future. You are amazing.

I am your mom’s age so experiencing this thru her point of view just ripped my heart out. So grateful the stupid doctor went on break and Dr. M came in and had the knowledge to know how to get baby peach delivered safely. The doctor cut your cervix while you were unmedicated and conscious? You're legit a badass. I don't have a cervix, but I feel like that amount of pain would have sent me into shock or made me pass out. I'm glad you're all at home and doing well now.

I'm a medical student, and I am so happy you had advocates around you. Thank God for your mom and husband. This is really traumatic, and I hope you are getting the mental health support you deserve. Take all the time you need to process. My heart and prayers for your peace are with you.

As soon as you said John was your calm, and you started to tear up, is when your story sent me on an emotional rollercoaster. I can't even imagine the pain and fear you went through. It seems silly to compare, or think ones labor is worse or better that another's, because we all deserve to feel validated for what we experience during L&D. I thought my daughter's pregnancy and labor were crazy, but this really is so terrifying. For months, women imagine how their birth stories will go and hoping it will play out how we would want it to go. I would say this teeters on medical neglect and could (and should) be seen through legally. Not just for your sake, but for future women that will be treated by those specific providers. We live in a country that should offer better medical care and coverage, and to not put us in mountains of debt, but that's not the case for so many people.

I am 25 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I can’t even imagine going through what you went through. You are so strong girl. Literally I wait for every week to pass and feel a little relief.

Medical Gaslight: I remember when my appendix was causing me severe pain, the people did not believe me. My appendix could have been saved with treatment. But it had to rupture before people took my extreme pain seriously. I was almost deleted earlier than it had to be. I made a life changing decision at that point. I'm glad I did. Your story about the doctors reminded me of that.

Sepsis nearly killed my ex. The ER doctor said if we waited another hour, she'd of been in shock and probably not of made it through. All caused by a terrible pneumonia, that every one keep diagnosing as asthma for 6 months. I am very happy you survived pregnancy. People severely underestimate how dangerous pregnancy can be. Happy you took action as soon as you could!

Women are constantly gaslit. I know this as a woman and a mom. My son was born with a hearing impairment and it took 3 years to be diagnosed. I could say more but I'll leave it at that. I still feel guilty for this. I take him to the doctor now maybe too many times but I don't regret that.

Women are simply incredible, this was traumatising to watch, I cant imagine what it was like to live through. Delighted you and baby are well. Much respect to you.

Sarah I’m so sorry for what you went through. As someone that also experienced a traumatic birth experience you’re a true fighter, when you say so much pain, I know it’s an ungodly otherworldly pain akin to torture, if someone has given me a gun I would have ended it all so to hear you just want to survive, you are a true fighter in every sense of the word. It’s now two and a half years since that birth experience and I’m only just moving past what I went through. Take time, find someone to talk to, I booked a consultation with the surgeon that did my emergency c section which really helped me to understand what happened to me. The surgeon also recommended that I have a planned c section next time so I don’t have to relive what happened, this might also be a good solution for you too. Wishing you peace and love xxx

god i'm so glad both you and baby survived and recovered, this has to be one of the scariest stories i've ever heard in my life. and to think the careless OB and nurses that were "treating" you that night face zero consequences for causing you to unnecessarily go through this experience. they could've given you a C-section long before the birth canal entrance with pain meds but they just ignored your contractions. unconscionable.

Our son was born at 28 weeks 4 days at 2 lbs 11 oz and was in the NICU for 83 days. One night, my wife had unusual pain in the middle of the night and was spotting. We went to emergency immediately and they said that we weren't going home until our son was born. They gave steroids to help his lungs develop enough to be born and he was born 2 days later. The doctors suspected that it was an infection of the fluid and a detached placenta. The nurses and doctors at the NICU were the absolute best and helped us through the entire process including teaching us how to feed through a tube and all the usual parental things. Those 83 days were the most stressful and we were in survival mode just doing and not thinking. We were still in survival mode for the first year and we had to have some therapy to help us resolve all of the feelings we suppressed during that time. You are a strong person, it's NOT your fault and we were surprised to find out it was more common than we thought. Our son is now 5 years old, so smart, so big and other than having Asthma and an attitude. Thank you for sharing your story.

From someone who works in the Hospital setting, Im so sorry to hear that had happened to you, especially the part about the nurse dismissing your pain. As healthcare workers, we are trained to advocate for our patients. But i am glad you are doing better.

I cried so much watching this. Nobody deserves to go through this, but you specifically are such a sweet person that it hurts a thousand times more to hear the story. Even though motherhood can be wonderful, the idea of anything happening to your baby becomes your worst nightmare from the day you get pregnant and for the rest of your life. My wife and I had a similar experience with a doctor that didn't know what was going on. My son was basically born dead and had to be revived but it was very touch and go for what seemed like an eternity. The entire experience was surreal but fortunately turned out fine. He's 25 now and I still look at him as a miracle. I am grateful that you have made it through Sara. I know how hard this had to be for you and your family but I am grateful it all turned out alright. You are amazing for sharing your story.

I'm crying, i couldn't watch the entire video, but i had my daughter at 31 weeks old, and seeing that crocheted jellyfish just made the tears fall. I'm swedish and they crocheted a similar one for her and we still have it. It was nice to see that they made one for you too, even though we live in totally different parts of the world. I feel so so alone in having a preemie baby, but she is a healthy and happy 7 month baby and i couldn't be happier.

I watched this video the other day. Then, rewatched it with my gf today who is a Doula because I was so curious to hear her perspective. We were both mad and in tears at the way everything went down. But, we give God all of the praise for getting you guys through this. You are so strong and I thank you for having the incredible bravery to share your story. Omg Sara, you got me bawling when you started to talk about that feeling when you came home without her. I didn’t have a birth as traumatic as yours, not even close, but that’s the feeling that even 8 years later is not healed. That moment when your baby is not in your belly, not in your arms. I just felt so empty, empty from everywhere. Empty in my belly, empty in my arms, empty in my soul. I remember starting to wonder if I hadn’t dreamt the whole thing, the pregnancy, the labor and delivery, like everything had never existed and I, in fact, had never had a baby. Awful. I wish you to heal from this experience, i recommend EMDR 100% in a few months ❤️

I feel all of this. My birthing experience was also traumatic. 36 hours in labor, emergency C-Section, 2 weeks in the NICU, birth diagnosis of Down syndrome and the worries of all the complications with that. I will never have another kid naturally. I couldn't do that again. I'm glad my daughter is here and safe because it could have gone so badly. I hope things slow down and go smoothly for you from this point. *hugs*

Oh Sara. Listening to your story brought me to tears. I went through a similar experience with my daughter, who is now a healthy adult btw, but was a preemie and faced lots of challenges. It does get better and don't let that bad experience discourage you from having a second one. You deserve to have the family you dreamed of.

My daughter's birth was extremely traumatizing. The way you choked up just thinking about talking about it, I understand that feeling. Having chunks of your memory missing, I understand. Having your mom and partner there recounting their experience, I understand. Having them talk about hearing you scream, I understand. What helped me the most was to process the birth and postpartum period with a therapist using EMDR. Having so many similarities, I feel confident telling you that your body remembers the trauma even though you don't necessarily remember. Those feelings during your labor and birth will come up at unexpected times. Sometimes, I'd smell something and be weeping not knowing what was happening to me. I also had nightmares. They wouldn't always make sense, but I'd wake up screaming. I had very strong emotions when the doctor was brought up. I'm so very grateful for your family and how they're supporting you. My family were told not to talk about it. I was having PTSD symptoms, thinking I was going crazy with nobody to talk to. I'd hear screaming out of nowhere. My sister told me years later that she could hear me screaming in the parking lot. My body remembered my screams even though I couldn't. Anyway, please consider having intensive therapy like EMDR. Please keep talking about your experience. Please have your family to keep listening. Please know, what you went through was horrible, but you are not! Therapy was the only thing that helped me with lasting healing and peace of mind. Also, please know how very strong, brave, and victorious you are! Many new mamas don't make it out but we did. You made it out! Please kiss your sweet baby for me. You've got this!

Sara you gave birth a week after me (38 weeks), and I have to say that you’re an absolute WARRIOR! I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that, but am so happy you’re on the other side now. The way you handled everything is seriously mind blowing. As you look back on this and the things you didn’t get to do (carry to term or breastfeed), please remember to give yourself grace - you were and are being SO strong and grounded while navigating this immense life transition into motherhood (not to mention on top of many crazy medical procedures!), and you’re absolutely rocking this journey that is uniquely yours. I just reminded my wife the other day that we had not seen any videos or updates from you in a long time. We were concerned but we are so glad that you and Baby Peach are doing well. Aww, she's amazing. I'm so glad that after this whole horrible traumatic ordeal, you at least have a living, breathing little daughter. My mom spoke to her therapist about when I was born, 30 years after it happened. These things can have a lasting impact. I hope you have the help you deserve to talk it all through.

Watching this video brought back a lot of memories. Similar birth stories. I have 2 children & have never carried a baby full term. I’m pretty efficient at delivering healthy babies. They are now 27 & 21 years old. Your reactions are normal. Take time to enjoy the moment, they don’t last. I am incredibly close to my children & I think part of that is going through what it took to get them here. And on the flip side slightly darker side I make Mama Bears look like cuddly little teddy bears. Don’t mess with my kids. And the after delivery, Breastfeeding issues… I empathize because I have been there. Godspeed.

Hey Sara! I’m really glad you’re all ok. I think me and my wife can relate to everything that happened to you. Our oldest daughter, now almost 4, stayed 6 months in the NICU. Long story short, she had a open heart surgery due a malformation due a syndrome she has. Been in the hospital for all that time really put life into perspective. We saw a lot of amazing stories, and other not so happy in the end. Our daughter finally came home at 2020 Christmas Eve, with a tracheostomy and gastrostomy. Another hard 6 months until she took it all off. Today she’s 100% and we had a second baby girl with a totally normal pregnancy. There are things who are totally out of our control but the best will always happen for us.

You, your mom, and husband are ALL rock stars, and like so many others here wish you and peach only the best. Over 30 years ago my sister-in-law had a three month early son, who is now a strong, healthy, and vibrant adult. Thank goodness she did not suffer the trauma that you did, but pre-mature births are am incredible strain for all, so blessings and prayers for the only the best for your family and the strong mother that you are.

I personally had a great birth experience with my twins, but I can relate to two things. One I had to be put totally under for my C -Section so I totally missed their coming out moment, and the part where you go home, without a baby in your belly, then no baby at home.
