Thank you. Sometimes I get bored of some youtubers in the first 5 seconds. But your interesting way of talking and your calm tone of voice made me watch you until the last second without feeling annoyed or bored. You are really creative person.
I use the DT 770 PRO (250 Ohm) on my "Antelope Zen Go Synergy Core"-Audiodevice for Vocal Recording Sessions in my Homestudio and it sounds really great with an propper Volume.
Never thought I'd say something like this, but this video helped me buy a pair of those 250ohm cans. Putting them together with a full Schiit stack. Amp/Dac/EQ. Thanks Brodie!
Totally agree. I use the 770/80 for Audio-Projects, the 990/250 for pleasure or Monitors for Videoshots outside. Afterall I find them so easy and comfortly to wear for hours every day, that I changed my headset for making phonecalls to an MMX300. One of the few great classic professional brands still around today.
Great video, man. For me, the recording/mixing combo is M50x and 990PRO 250 Ohm. I, as a bass player, love 50x's sound when tracking bass. But Beyerdynamics are simply pleasant and overall, quite insane value/price deal.
I can (kind of) confirm what you're saying at 5:28, and it really surprised me: I have been using the DT 880 Edition 600 Ohms for many years, and needed to get some easier to drive closed-backs. So I ordered several models, including some models known for a natural or flat response (AKG K-361, Sennheiser HD 280 Pro), the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms, some cheaper knockoffs of them (Superlux HD 660 Pro 150 Ohms, the t.bone HD 815), and two more cans. And the DT 770 Pro sounded much more similar to my DT 880 Edition than to any of the other closed-backs. And that's what I was looking for, so I kept them. Really the same overall balance of bass, mids and treble, with the DT 880 Edition sounding a little clearer and flatter in the mids. And both the high-impedance DT 880 Edition and the 80 Ohms version of the DT 770 Pro have a little less energy in the treble compared to the other impedance variants. Also, I can confirm what you say at 8:15: I once ordered non-original earpads for my DT 880. I believe they were advertized as compatible with the 770, 880 and 990. They made the upper bass bloated and the mids really buried. Beyerdynamic tune their sound a lot with the earpads, so you should only get original ones, ore ones that are specifically tuned if you want to change the sound a bit.
This is just what I was looking for, I have 80ohm DT770's at the moment and I love them. I thought about buying 250ohm DT990's as well since it could be even more suitable for music production :) Thank you a lot for this video!
@@GundamGunpla I think they are really good for metal and rock. However I got my DT990's and I prefer them slightly more. But go for DT770 if you have to be in noisy environment. If you can listen music in pretty quiet room I think DT990 is the way to go :)
@@DJSparkyPlug Recently I thought a lot and however I need version 770 because it is a closed model. The current situation prompts me towards DT 770 Pro. However, only what worries me that 770 are supposedly strongly bass? Such a bass conquer will not be a health problem? Many people praise models 770, 880 and 990 :) There would also be a problem which version to choose Ohm? 32/80/250? The only problem to stay. What to give you to Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO
@@GundamGunpla The frequency response is slightly v-shaped so they boost bass and high frequencies a bit but I don't think the bass is too strong. It's pretty balanced in my opinion actually. I'm 100% sure you won't get any health problems from these headphones. Also Ohm version depends on what you use to drive these headphones. I'd say if you have audio interface get 250 ohm or 80 ohm. If you use pc motherboard/laptop output then 80 ohm. I would get 32 ohm only if you gonna use it with only your mobile phone. Hope this helped a bit. There are also many youtube videos about this topic ^^
@@DJSparkyPlug Alright thank You :) Only last question if possible. What DAC can you recommend slightly to buy for Beyerdynamic DT770 pro or Beyerdynamic DT880 pro? I currently own the DAC-X3 but I know it is not enough. techroadtrip.com/audio/fx-audio-dac-x3-review/ Have a great day :)
What a coincidence! I use the same combo (using the DT-770 version with noise isolation). I use to alternate the DT-990 with Sennheiser HD598SE, as they feel lighter and sound good too ;)
they are similar enough, yet slightly different enough, right? different tools for different jobs and consistent enough so your ears don't go crazy. my 990's do fit a bit tighter on my head right now, i also notice.
Owning a pair of 770s, the pretty mich only issue i had with them was the non-removable cable, since my cat killed my cable after 3 or 4 years. And because i had no more warranty, i had to fix it myself and i mist say: Soldering a wire to the driver is a really weird feeling. But because i had tonsolder anyways, i modded mine to fit a mini xlr socket (like AKG headphones did), so now i have a detachable cable, which is a REALLY nice upgrade. I can change my cable length from 1.5 to 3m depending on where i use them
Tested both models over a couple of years and in my personal opinion the 770's are overall better for somebody who wants just playing games and listening music . Good review !
I am the proud owner of all three legendary German made Beyerdynamic headphones, DT 770 Pro 80 ohms, DT 880 Pro, DT 990 Pro, as also the very portable DT 240 Pro. Looking forward to buying the Amiron Home as also the DT 880 edition & DT 990 edition, T1, & T5 (Both 600 ohms and 32 ohms). Great video! I’m now a subscriber!
I bought DT 770 80 ohm,and drive them with iFi hip-dac. The sound is awesome and i can hear every instrument. Perfect now when Apple Music going hi res lossless.
Just bought the 990s can't wait to try them out for mixing and gaming. Edit: After using them for some time I can now say that they are worth the bucks. Very clear sound and good for mixing. All music genres sound well. And there is definitely enough bass. (Since many people say it lacks bass)
@@atnam44 I bought them specifically for that. When powered by a good dac/amp (sound blaster g6 here) they obliterate my trusty Sennheiser 595 in all aspects.
Apart from the obvious cable "issue", one thing to keep in mind is that the clips above both cups, that the headband slides through, is prone to break over time. Luckily they are replaceable like everything else but it's one thing to keep in mind and not panic about once it happens, cos it will happen sooner or later. I don't think any less about the cans because of that, mind you. Currently rocking 770 Pros 80 Ohm, have been for the last 4 years or so and looking into 990s to go with them.
@@paulwoaert Based on user experience, as they did for me, maybe due to poor handling, by me or the previous owner. Also have heard the same happen to other users, not everyone. Maybe I should have phrased it as "may" happen, rather than will. My bad for that. Still, it is a weak(ish) point in the build and just meant to point it out, kot shit on the Beyers. They are my favorite cans after all and I didn't mind paying a few euros for new parts.
I feel like most of these reviews don't get to the bottom of things. 1. The size adjustment is amazing. It feels seemless. No steps with a comfy level which is unreachable cause it is inbetween. Those will sit perfectly. 2. I can NOT at all recommend the 770. Why? Its accoustic is a catastrophe and I'll tell you why. Its bass is a bit dull but is meant to be stronger. It doesn't sound bad but for anyone who is looking for a crystal clear bass will not be at the right address. Now the real problem: The 770 is isolated WAY too much. When there is no audio playing you will hear your heart beating, your blood flowing and bony sounds from your neck. To me that is unbearable. No reviewer ever says that. Why? It is isolated so much that you feel like you have pressure on your ears. Similar to this feeling, everything going on in your head will be much louder. Also including your own voice. Playing a video game and talking to friends for example will be very uncomfortable. Buy the 990 or the 880. Most people will NOT like the 770 over these two. If you wanna have extreme isolation which ensures that someone talking next to you will be unheard should pick the 770. Also pick the 770 when you like internal body sounds. Not preferable for ordinary music listeners, gamers or generally pc users. You can e.g. use them when working as a construction worker but wanting to listen to music while doing so.
I have a small recording studio and if you are looking for cans for studio use, you really do need both of these. The 770s for recording and the 990s for mixing.
Yes agreed (audio engineering for 38 years) 770 for tracking and obviously for talent because of bleed, the vocalists mic will pickup and track the bleed 990 for mixing and mastering along with monitors I go back and forth between my 990s and my Genelec near fields Another nice feature with the 990s is for Electronic Drum kits when playing along with a reference track as opposed to trying to mix it all in the can, that can be hard for the talent to differentiate there own module sound from the reference tune So they can hear my Genelecs and their kits with the 990s and the spacial difference is great for instruction and learning pre recorded bits from outside sources
Very nice review! I am only a simple and humble home music listener and I already have a Shure SHR840 and the Sennheiser HD58X, but i will get a Bayerdynamic headphones as well - just for the thrill! And especially for your point 10/10. Probably the 770s, just because from the sample sounds comparisons onlinei get the feeling that they possess that lushness and thickness of the sound. I like the open headphones otherwise, but it just seems that the closed ones possess that a bit more.
Got to say, I have HD560s, DT990 Pro and Superlux HD 681 and the HD 681 for $35 aud are a real surprise. I use the 990 Pro as my daily but still in a pinch have a look at the 681.
It could be nice to have as ideal a headphone with 2 differents back, one back closed and other open. Or maybe just a grid who can be closed or opened simply as that and as we need. I don't know if it existe but if yes with the specs of beyerdynamic it could be a killer headphone and the real solution because one for all type of use. Nice video your explanations are clean and very clear, thank you very much👍😏
Hello Mate. Interesting video thanks. My trusty Sennheiser HD 560II phones just died after nearly 30 years of studio service!!! Great open phones so better for your long-tern hearing. But I see the Beyer 990 OPEN phones have an ever greater frequency response than my old faithfuls. So even though I feel like a traitor... I am considering of moving to Beyer. But, no hope of testing a pair in a Hi-Fi shop given the crazy world we live in, so I am thinking of just going for it. I would love to hear your thoughts? Thank you and best wishes from an Englishman in a French forest. 🏆 EDIT: Great review by the way, thank you. 👍🏻
I have also a DT770 Pro 80 Ohm combined with a Fiio K1 (it gives enough power). Fun fact. The DT880 has the name to be semi-open and the DT990 has the name to be (fully) open. In case you do a tear down, you will find out that the 880 is more open in design then the 990!. One person on RU-vid was showing that.
I must say that at low level with my old ears 770 80 ohms are perfect, V shape suits me, I just level down 6kHz+ Not neutral but very fun, large sounding. Some hate Beyer trebles. This silver pad is marketing genius, you know immediately that it's a Beyer.
@@brodiebrazil compared to the Beyerdynamic the Neumann sound really flat, neutral, linear - in a direct comparison the Beyerdynamic still have some hifi character which is what you usually don't want when you want to analyze audio and check if there's too much bass or sibilance in a voice over e.g. - using the Neumann for voice overs here mainly, too but also for music mixing and mastering now and then. You have to get used to them, though, especially for the sudden lack of a "hifi" sound :) My next purchase will be the Neumann KH 120 monitors as people say that they are directly comparable to the sound of the NDH20 headphones. I'm currently using the Adam A5X.
i have worn my DT770 Pro for over 18h non-stop and i forget i'm with headphones good they have such a strong cable amd for games they are just Insanely good especially for competitive gamers in MP games DT990 too they are basically the same DT770 have more bass causs its close based dt990 bigger sound stage cause it's open back although dt770 has great sound stage for closed back headphones i found DT770 and DT990 much more comfortable then DT700 and DT900 or DT1770 and DT1990 with replaced earpads from Denoki of course cause the stock earpads are not that good
Hi, i know you covered that the earpads are different and sound different but I have a question. Do you think putting 990 earpads on 770’s 32 ohm will sound better or worse?. I currently use the 770’s 32 ohm and I have the black velours on them. I’m very curious to hear your feedback thanks!
Hi. I’m torn. I can’t decide. I produce beats/i mighhhhhtttttt sing/rap. I want a headphone that’s true to sound. I have an audio kontrol 1 interphase. Idk which one to purchase. I mix also nothing too professional but I just want it to sound how I tweak it in the headphones on other systems. If you can guide me that would be awesome. Great video.
How do you power up 250 Ohm headphone, by using a headphone connected to an audio interface? If that is the case, what cables should I use for the connection
you need DAC/AMP to have proper sound on those headphone. something like this stereodamage.com/best-dac-amp-for-dt990-pro-250-ohm-headphone/ if using normal audio jack the sound will be small and weak
I have a question for you guys. For my new digital piano (a Roland HP-704), I am considering to buy Beyerdynamic DT-770 headphones. So far I have understood that, in principle, the 32 Ohms version of this headphone should suffice. But I have also heard that in general the sound on 250 Ohms headphones might be better if you use a headphone amplifier. So what should I do? Just buy the 32 Ohms headphones or buy the 250 Ohms headphones along with a headphone amplifier? (And if so, which headphones amplifier?)
If you ONLY intend on using them with an amp or very sufficient power source go for the 250. The 32 are really meant for mobile devices such as cellphones and tablets. Personally if you want a good in between all around headphone i recommend the 80 ohm. I've ordered mine already they arrive tomorrow.
I bought the 770 80 Ohms and exchanged them for the 32 finally because on my MacBook Pro laptop, they sounded dull compared to what they sounded on a hifi amp or other headphones sounded like on the computer.
@@zerotactix5739 Honestly it's pretty hard to make a difference. You might notice it listening one after the other but otherwise both offer a very good sound and I don't feel that one is better. Nevertheless on my laptop, the 80ohm was underpowered and the volume was really too low.
Do you use an EQ for the headphones? Everyone is talking about using an EQ makes every headphone sounding far better. I tried it but nah not for me. What is your expirience?
Weird, for me there was a huge difference between the dt770 pro 250 ohm and dt990 pro 250 version. I love the dt990 pro where i returned the dt770 pro because of sounding very thin. Perhaps because i listen at very low volumes. I powered them through a focusrite scarlett v3 solo.
Can I use the 770 Pro 80 ohm version without an amp or an audio interface till I can save up to get those later? I want to able to use them for now without any add ons. Is that possible?
Would you recommend the dt 990 250 ohm, for sm7b, I’ll be using the roadcaster pro with noisegate so sound leakage shouldn’t be a problem but do you think RCP can fully power the 990 250 ohm
yeah maybe with a dynamic mic you wouldn't have the 990's leaking. also if you just kept the volume minimal when using a condenser that might help. i just prefer to "hear everything".
Hmm...'sweating a little bit, or your skin's oily a little bit". This is just why you don't want velour pads. Comfy and classy when new, but in long term regular use, they become very unhygienic - or if you prevent this by regularly cleaning them, the quality goes down hill fast, and you'll want to replace them. I had this issue with AKG K712's. Finally swapped the pads for sim leather, and not only are they even more comfortable, cleaning them is a non-issue. Just my opinion from experience. Sup-2-u.
As the only one reference I won't recommend them to you, but if you can't buy anything else (or better), remember that they have an artificial bass boost; the sound is fun because they have coloured the frequencies. By the way, If you open them you will discover that they are not open, they are semi open. Finally two pieces of advise, the plastic joint breaks a lot, but you can print them downloading the model, your cable will break too, try to mod them, there are some videos in youtube like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-woSGEGkn_XI.html
meh... i have used Sennheiser HD280 pro's for many years, i just bought a set of Beyer Dynamic DT-770's and they have an un natural bass boost to them... Ive had several other studio guys listen to my tracks on their monitors and cans to verify. The Sennheisers do a better job, i will say that the DT-770's have a more open mid frequency range than the 280's but thats it, the bass boost is a deal breaker for me, had i used them on my last few tracks the bass would be way too low in the mix and for that reason I will be selling them. or just using them for tracking, but certainly not mixing.
Yeah, i wasn't too sure if the ear pads for my new dt770 was different from my 1 year old dt990, the dt990 feels bigger around the ear but that's probably because the ear pads are rundown. Is burning in headphones a necessary thing to do? i just got the dt770 today.
In looking for a portable headphones that sounds as good as the dt770's. What do you recommend? I don't care about feuteres and stuff! (Only audio quality.) But I would like a good isolation. Btw: I don't care if the impedence is high, cause I have a portable amplifier case for my phone. So that's not a problem for me.
Portable amplifier case for your phone? Which one is it? I’m actually getting the 770’s (the 80ohms version) delivered tonight and would love to pair one of those with an amplifier, specially if it’s a portable one!
@@ON760 I'm using an ifi hip dac! Now to attach it to a phone case, all you need is something like double sided silicone pads! And attach them to the back of the amp and then put it nice and tight on the case. Now in the package you get a cable included, obviously:) but I recommend getting the special ifi OTG cable, because it's a better quality cable, (it's yellow ish!) Btw: You won't be disappointed with the sound of the dt770's 80 ohm, I am really happy with mine:) Note that you have to burn them in, and that can take some time, it took me around 1 week.
I use sennheiser hd25's for portable use... Had them 20+ years.. Strongest headphones I've ever had. And sound good for the size... I also run a cheap wireless set of soundcore q30's that sound pretty good... Esp if you like bass. The hd25's defiantly sounds far better on my lg v50
@@brodiebrazil Thanks, I found info on their site (Focusrite) that stated the max recommended is 200 but it can go higher. I went with the 80ohm version of the DT-990, thanks!
@@brodiebrazil Great video! Can you help a bit? im confused between 80 and 250 ohm versions. I have a Motu M4 interface which claims to have above average gain to push the headphones but still less than your amp for sure. Is the Motu gain going to be enough to deliver also the quality of the 250 ohms or will deliver only enough volume? I even see people using the 250s with focusrite 2i2 which has less gain and they are happy but I havent got if there is any other element required to the headphone amp to deliver volume plus quality sound... Last, if i end up with the 80 ohms version whats gonna be the difference in sound? More narrow or missing the sound stage for example? Thanks again!
@@relax261085 The Motu M4 should power them just fine. The difference between the impedances is how tightly the voice coil is wound, which unsurprisingly leads to tighter sound coming out of them. You get more range of attenuation, meaning finer adjustments can be made on your end, and a wider dynamic range in experience. The downside is that you'll never be able to power them off of an iPhone to dance down the aisles of a grocery store because they need a lot of current to drive them.
