Can I love you any more ? Omgggg you're such an amazing human being!! This video needs to be out here in these streets. Too many bullies on RU-vid and I am happy you said what you said because people are too rude out here. On another note why is Albert sooooooo cute!!!! I love how you are authentic in every aspect of your life. I love how much you love all ypur dogs and you show them off and you dont care what anyone else thinks about them. You're not a snob even though you're learned and fancy and sophisticated enough to be a snob. You validate everyone else's personality and style and offer common sense design related advice to help improve their spaces . That's what makes you a real designer. You know you're my favorite person on here and I can go on for dayyyssss🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Ps I love your fancy house and you're robbing me by not showing me enough of it. Can't wait to see more videos of what you're doing with your space. Also in my mind you're my best friend🤣🤣🤣🤣

I enjoyed this video. I’m also tired of they hyper consumerism and every one’s home looks the same. I actually unsubscribed from a few design enthusiasts channels because of this. My unpopular design opinion is rug on top of carpet. Lol, it’s a no-no but I hate the carpet in my rental and I can’t remove it so I covered it up with a beautiful rug. 😂
@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic 2 года назад
Agreed! Rugs over carpeting are like wearing socks with sandals. Much better ways to bring interest into a space. The biggest reason not to do it though is it’s a known trip hazard where people can and do get hurt. Safety first!😊😊😊
@toonybooper
@toonybooper 2 года назад
I hear you! Like yeah, preferably I wouldn't want to put a rug on a carpet, but I also wouldn't prefer carpet in the first place. Most renters don't have a choice what floors we get. So yeah, I'm going to put a nice clean pretty rug over an old, dirty carpet that who knows what has happened to.

I love how you’re always so encouraging and have respect for everyone. You’re never snarky, and your passion shines through. I love how you embrace being eco friendly and turn away from consumerism. I’ve learned so much from both your suggestions as I have your attitudes. When I first started my journey I was overwhelmed having nothing and not knowing how to start. Now I can look at things and consider my feelings too. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that good interior design doesn’t just happen. It’s like a living breathing organism that evolves. I embrace that this will be a lifelong project that will reflect me and my personal growth. I also embrace all your tips here! I used to be daunted by the idea of elegant design because I thought it was only a wealthy people thing but you show how it can be done well at several price points. By the way that green is lovely on you. Thank you for another wonderful video ❤️

I love how realistic your advice is. Without naming names, there are just so many, even here on RU-vid, who kind of push for that overly trendy and lux type of aesthetic that I feel can absolutely encourage waste and makes people feel bad for having or enjoying more traditional styled pieces. Not everyone loves that ultra modern or white on white on white with a touch of off white look. I definitely have a more traditional style similar to you. I love ornate gold frames and mirrors, wing chairs and all that good stuff. Not so crazy about the modern, though I have incorporated a few more modern pieces in such as my black metal and glass coffee table (your favorite, glass table tops LOL) and it looks really nice with my antique wood pieces and topped with some thrifted vintage books and marble coasters. Also as always, though you give GREAT advice, Albert was my most favorite part of the video. He always steals the spotlight when he makes his appearance. ❤️

When a friend of mine was updating her house she told me she was going to tear out all of the original wood floors. I almost had a heart attack! I asked her if she realized she would be destroying the value of that house, a 120 year old house with original flooring and she was going to tear it out. She reconsidered, and then just had the floors sanded and re-stained. Thank God! They were not cheap flimsy floors, they were oak. When I got down to the wood floors in my house I realize that they were fir and they were in absolutely terrible condition. So I covered them up with vinyl plank flooring.

You always read my mind! I just decided the other day that I've watched my last "Top 10 must haves from This Store!" video. Thanks to these, I fell for the "textured, earthy vessel" hype last year. It was out by the time I got the price sticker off. And the white rooms - I agree, will go out. I think they got popular because three sticks of furniture against a white wall photographs well for social media. In real life it's not that interesting.

"work with what you have and make the best out of it" thanks, Garrett...best advice ever. There are a lot of homes with "great bones", that just need people willing to take care of them and see the beauty in them to elevate the space. 💗 And being thoughtful about what you want and taking time to source quality items makes all the difference in the world to making a house a home. New isn't always better...and new can be as simple as moving something you already have to a different place in your home to refresh the space, not just buying something to keep up with a trend or with others.

I'd go even further: Well made wood floors are a classic, can be spruced up a bit with stain or polish, yes. I'd say the same goes for well made, sturdy wood furniture as well. Wood is made of trees, and nature does not date a home. I'm the person that collects pieces of hardwood furniture from the curbside trash and use them to make furniture legs, stools, small tables, blanket ladders, whatever.

Thanks for this. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate and understand that I am happiest when my home is clean, clutter-free, and filled with the things that make me happy - regardless of what’s in style at the moment. When we moved to a new home last year, I only put things in the rooms that were useful (like, you need a colander!) and/or that I love and/or are meaningful to me in some way. Every room looks breezy yet warm and comfortable, pretty and soothing. I’m done with trends or caring about what’s “in” or “out.” If it makes me happy, that’s all that matters. Thanks for being the ONLY designer I’ve seen on RU-vid that seems to agree! :)

I totally agree that the green shirt looks great! My husband is a retired military officer and we’ve lived all over the world in our 49 years together. We often had little choice as to what our living spaces would be. It was fun using beloved pieces in different ways as we bounced from place to place. Our mantra was always to purchase the best quality we could afford. Despite the best efforts of moving companies to destroy our household goods, much of our early furniture is still in use in our home. Good quality stands the test of time and can easily be updated with new pillows, throws, reupholstery, or other revisions. My husband replaced the feet of our 49 year old leather sofa and club chair to raise the seat height several inches. It looks so good and is much more comfortable. When I see the items that decorate my home, not only am I reminded of the places in Europe and Asia where we purchased them, but we’re also reminded that home to us is where we are at the moment and where we make beautiful family memories. I love the look of the spaces in your home that we see in your videos, but not wild about the clips of that other designer you admire so much. LOVE the artwork in the background too.

I learn a lot from this channel and others about design. when I was younger I read a great quote in an architecture magazine that said, “just put things in your home that you love and it will all come together.” My unpopular design opinion is that I hate the all-gray trend. Also I hate that people think that in order to update midcentury furniture, it has to be painted. As we went through the process of selling our house in Anchorage AK, I realized that people seem really spoiled. They want new construction, or they want everything to be updated to the latest trends. For our new home we bought a 1966 time capsule and I’m looking forward to giving it some TLC without ruining its amazing character.

My neighbor had remodeled their kitchen, removing solid red oak cabinets replacing it with particle board white. They had put in wood flooring which was fairly dark and when they put it on the market they ripped out 6 month old real wood flooring to even darker wood floors on the advice of the realtor. I find throwing away wood is a waste of resources. I still enjoy the items that I either inherited or bought decades ago regardless of whether someone else thinks that it is dated. I enjoy where I live and don’t worry about the next owner because I will be dead by then.

Great points as always. The wood floors in our home are what most design influencers these days would call “orangey”. They certainly aren’t on trend. But we weren’t about to rip them out, especially since they match our 100 yr old chestnut staircase which is NEVER changing so long as we live here.

Garrett. Allow me to share my experience and love of recliners. My former husband could not live another day on this earth until he purchased and forced upon me the uglest, most horrible recliner that had ever been created and sold. The contraption was various degrees of Pink, it was striped, it was velvet, overstuffed, and if you can believe it; electronic and mechanical. It had an arm that lifted open that hid a cubby for who knows what, it had a corded telephone that required a hard line to operate in the cubby, under the arm. It had an electrical cord out the rear with a 3 prong plug that gave this beast the juice to select "Personalized Comfort Settings". Yes, it vibrated, it heated, it had speakers in the head rest for musical enjoyment that was; wait for it: hard lined to the computer that transmitted radio or CD musical selection. Upon deploying the automated and oh so convient reclining side engagement button, the beast would "Roll" forward approx 6 inches from the stationary location, the foot rest elevated ever so gently concurrently with the desending lumbar portion of the monstrosity. There was an engineering and or manufactering complication in this endevor that the designer overlooked, sadly. The rolling motion required for reclining was not only very loud, inoperative on carpet, but oddly enough; when engaged simutaneously with the with comfort vibration/heat option, would throw the whole thing into a sort of frenzy comperable to a Grand Maul Siesure that could only be stopped by disengaging the electral supply. Now, if you were alone, imagine trying to get out of it? Yes, Former Husband, and yes I ensured he took custody of the thing upon divorce-it was all his. I have heard tell from my children that his new wife got rid of it immediately.

I often like when something I enjoy goes out of style, because they will show up used and the prices will go down. My favorite for this is when wood colors go out of style. Antique pieces will end up being much cheaper and easier to find as everyone gets rid of them. Right now I like oak, and it is lovely that it isn't the "IN" wood at the moment.

I don't want my home to look like Target, and it's obvious you don't either. Your home is the perfect example of elegance. Omg THANK you for calling out the consumerism, wastefulness, and empty trend chasing. I follow some other designers on RU-vid and while some of their content is wonderful, I can't deal with the consumerism purchase hauls...really turns me off. My unpopular design opinion is feeling less fussy about scale. I believe it's important to move around the space organically and comfortably, but it's more of an American thing for a coffee table to be the exact perfect size, for example. In Europe if you inherit a beautiful marble coffee table but it's not exactly 16" from the couches...that's OK. I live in the States again and I am still abiding by the EU sensibility...

I think it is really important to save your money and buy something that's of really good quality that will last. Pieces that are good enough that you can leave them to someone when you are gone. That doesn't necessarily mean antiques either. Even if you are on a budget, a couple of good quality pieces is better than a house full of cheap stuff...I guess that's my unpopular opinion. I also don't like green walls, but I've said that before (also unpopular)...but hey, I do me. You do you.

Hey Garrett, thank you for your comment about not trying to put someone down for their choices in style. I had a question on Houzz regarding a style of door I liked, and a ‘pro’ there told me the style was so 70’s and builder grade. Um, no it isn’t. It is simple, and most importantly for me, easy to clean. And in fact, it was a design I saw in a very expensive kitchen….on Houzz! Thank you for understanding and stating that people should make the best of what you can and enjoy your style (6:50). It make me so damn cranky, but I did have a great answer and told them their comment actually hurts them more than it does me…I am not dependant of customers - if I were, I would answer more politely. My apartment I lived in before this one I recently moved into was HORRIBLY painted when I moved. I'm talking lime green walls AND ceiling in the bath, icky orange walls and ceiling in the hall (which had no window or light fixtures), and a dull, matte grey in the kitchen and bedroom. I painted the whole place ceilings included in an emerald green for the bedroom, ivory in the bath, a ruby red in that hall, and a sage green in my kitchen. I loved it. My new place has all white walls and gray faux wood floors. I feel like I'm living in a mental institution lol. I NEED color in my life!

I love Tiffany lamps. Not popular here in the slightest. I have a modern Scandinavian home with some industrial pieces here and there… and a couple Tiffany lamps. Couldn’t care less if they go, I love ‘em! Also the whole “you should never have more than 40 % wood in a room or mix wood tones” Who are the crazy people who make up these design rules??

I also dislike a "recliner looking' recliner! I have a lot of home decor items that i use for staging homes. i buy them at my local thrift store. I keep them on shelves in my family room, sometimes I" shop" my collection and redo the decor in my own home.

Yes, Professor LeChic! I love that you embrace using what we already have and making it fabulous. I have items from family members that others once snubbed. I refinished or refurbished them and now the snobs are super jealous of my heirlooms. Sorry Honey! Remember when you turned up your nose at Grandpa's 1960s wooden porch chair? Well, I got a lady from Etsy to make some butter-yellow leather cushions, had my hubby strip and stain it mahogany and added a little copper plate on the back with Grandpa's name and birth date on it. Now you're mad that "DJ got the best things from the house"? No, Boo-Boo. DJ had VISION and saw the beauty of Grandpa's favorite place to sit while you had to buy brand new Ikea crap. His chair now has a place of honor in my study and is my most cherished possession. Same with my late mother-in-law's 1990s lighted curio cabinet. People made fun of it because it was full of scary, big-eyed Hummel-esque figurines, but it's Thomasville and has clean lines. I cleared that baby out, switched up the hardware, had it moved to our bedroom and filled it with my purses, scarves and gloves (beautifully arranged, of course). Hubby put the LED light on a timer, so at night, it's the world's prettiest nightlight and I have my own little dust free boutique to window-shop near my dressing table. Once again, the girls seethe with envy... Now they are looking for old curios to do the same. HA! I appreciate you preaching the gospel of originality and sustainability. Can I have an "AMEN!" lol

My unpopular opinion: Give ugly a chance. Sometimes, it’s way more interesting than what’s popular. Example: I have blue carpet in my new home. The house is new to me, but was built in the late 80’s. When I first moved in my first thought was that the ugly blue carpet in the bedrooms had to go, however, after about 8 months here I kinda like it. It’s in good shape and pretty easy to clean, plus it’s given me a chance to do a lot of “tone-on-tone” designing with other shades of blue to make the color look intentional. Hardwood flooring is gorgeous, but I think it’s okay to work with what you have.

Can I say how much I enjoyed this video! My unpopular design opinion: Old houses make the best new homes. You can revive their best features while putting your personal stamp on the space. When we bought a dark, dingy and non-descript bungalow, I knew I loved its 12ft ceilings, fab open plan and generous wrap-around porch. It's now a baby blue seaside cottage in the Cape Dutch meets British colonial style complete with coralstone rendered details, bright white shutters and gingerbread trim. We loved it dingy but now it's truly ours.

Great advice!!! It really puts a perspective on the influencer culture of trends. It’s important people stop being followers and ask what works best for them. As I’m currently renovating my home, there are older vents, smoked mirrors, hardware, a weird stove fireplace with 70’s tile in the bedroom etc. I just have to work with it.

I just found your channel while looking for tips on replacing my kitchen. I love your approach! I love that you consider budget, size of the space, sustainability, personality and practicality. I'm so fed up with decor snobs and rampant consumerism. I'm a divorced working mum, a quirky auld gothy hippie, and I live in Scotland on a low income. A new kitchen has been a very long time coming. My house is small but perfectly adequate in size for us, it just needs some serious work done. I'm now in the position to do it and I feel so grateful. Thanks for your refreshing approach! I agree with your video even if I don't always do what you advise. I wish you had been giving advice 30 years ago when I first started furnishing my home. 16 years ago I purchased a recliner for my husband. It looks like a vintage French club chair. The leather of course shows wear which I think makes it look better. It was a good purchase - he likes it and it adds to the look of the room. I am not tearing out my golden oak wood floors from the 1960s. I don't love them but I am trying to work with them ( around them ? ) instead of destroying them.

You are so, so inspiring, and real. I hope many young people with years of home creating ahead of them are taking what you say to heart. It's not right (to this "slightly older" one, ha) that starting out homeowners and renters get over-influenced by content generators who could care less whether someone can afford to "keep up." Unique or cherished items are joys in any age, they see us through the frenzy of life outside the door, and they anchor memories in years to come. Thank you for your thoughtful presentations, and respectful encouragement to be true to ourselves in the most elevated way we can in our circumstances. And oh Albert, "...you move!" He's a delight!

I love your video's Garrett! I think one of the most important advice pieces you've given, was LAYER color hues instead of just going hilly nilly right and left up and down with all kinds of strategies based on impulse instead of direction. I am trying to "restructure" that philosophy in my house, open concept living, dining, kitchen. I actually just purchased a console today with that in mind! I have a BFA and was NEVER taught back in the 80's, to layer different tones of color in interior design. Well done Garrett! Thank you! K in Colorado

My unpopular design opinion: woven/jus baskets. Well baskets in general, but especially them: I hate them. They're dust magnets, catch on fabric, don't close, and are just generally useless. Especially baskets in entyways. What could you possibly keep in there? Shoes? Hats? Ew. Treat your belongings with a bit more respect than tossing them into that kind of hostile receptacle.

This was an absolutely fantastic "vent" and i totally agree! I love how you express ideas and how you encourage being nature/eco friendly and not shopping all the time, quality over quantity, so important in the long term. I have recently seen a lot of people talking about water carafes for the different rooms in the house, of course, this is a great idea for me as I live in the Middle East and we always have water and other types of beverages available for guests and ourselves. However, they are so expensive! I suddenly realiized that I have at least 3 or 4 beautiful Wine carafs with the glasses that I have been given as house warming gifts, and voila! recycled them as water carafs. I get so many compliments, my friends really enjoy "drinks" at my home nowadays. Using what we already have in our homes is not only economical, if you wait long enough it eventually becomes "in fashion" again! LOL!

Not so much now it's moved on! Also the lack of consumerism you support is so refreshing, if only everyone could hear that it isn't normal to always go out and buy more stuff. So many home have real clutter issues and it's much more sustainable not to buy it anyway. Brilliant points thank you!

I completely agree with every opinion. All white with tons of plants and rattan was a trend in 1988 when I was a kid and my parents were poor. It should not be repeated just because it looks good on camera. It looks cheap and cold. And I hate monochrome black everywhere. Black should be a grounding element, NOT everywhere like you’re living inside a grave. Please consider doing a video on library design. I’m going to turn the impractical office of our new house into a library. I was planning dark wood built ins & sage green until green became a color of the year and now I’m resistant because I always like something, it becomes trendy, and then I hate it.

I think as long as a hardwood floor is a color that is complementary to the natural wood tone, it’s all good. With that said, it is beyond me why people install beautiful hardwood floors only to stain them gray. Also, I hate McMansions. The quality and finishes in my historic home cannot be matched with today’s construction and materials.

You’re dining room is lovely, I just love rich, deep blues. I agree about wood flooring: if it’s done well, it can always be sanded & refinished. I inherited an antique Chippendale dining table and buffet… I don’t care if it’s trendy, it holds special memories (but I do change out centerpieces and table-runners). A wood floor outdated? LOL! It’s nature, like a plant, or marble. So weird when someone says that, and you called it out, YES. Have enjoyed my Eames recliner with ottoman for 20 years, a timeless classic that’s quality and can enjoy it for at least 20 more. Every word of last segment of advice about curating loved things over time is what I did and advise people too when they compliment mine. Hunting, curating , doing imaginative repurposes for items ( tiny to large) that you really do love is just the best. Hitting the antique malls with a friend for a daytrip is dreamy fun too. Getting things over time equals character for comfortable and beautiful living. Kelly is just the best, isn’t she? Her book on my coffee table is also inspo and decor for those of us wishing we has her talents. And yes, that over consumerism of new everything in every that has no soul that’s mass produced in every store truly hurts my eyes, no matter HOW it’s put together. Quality beats quantity every time. Your video content is always helpful and so interesting . Til next time, Cheers, everyone! 🍷

UO: no art is better than boring art. I grew up in a house that had art everywhere you're "supposed" to have it: big oil paintings over the fireplace and sofa, photos in the hall, tiny pictures in the powder room, etc. Nothing that my parents particularly liked, but they bought because it filled a space. When my parentsthey moved out and were trying to sell the house, we took down all the old art, moved around some of my mother's many plants, and oh my goodness the place looked so much more inviting and spacious. It wasn't cluttered before, but it had looked like a doctor's waiting room.
