Hey I'm the Hwoarang in the video. The solutions to my issues may have been obvious to some, but Phi and some of the twitch comments (like do ff4 or ff3 to get in closer) really helped out. I have a bad habit of doing armor moves because people tend to mash at these ranks but clearly I need to break the habit. This did help me out, I know what to focus on, thank you Phi for watching my replay.

Thanks for the videos PHIDX, I just got demoted from garyu after grinding weeks to get there. There were so many times I got so frustrated, salty, HOWEVER I remember your lessons, and how I shouldn’t care about my rank, because I will eventually get it back. I’m trying to be better at tempering my salt when I grind the game, and I have you to thank for that! I’m just trying to be better player, while also having fun in the losses just as much as the wins. I’ve gotten better at not blaming the game when something doesn’t go as planned and instead try to figure out what were the mistakes I made that caused things to fall apart, that way I grow and get more out the game long term as opposed to empty calorie victories and short term happiness from scrub victories.

I had the fortunate experience of having a handful of games with a guy at Purple Ranks who mained the same character. Spent a few hours the next day reviewing what happened and it was insightful. Bro you can dissect EVERYTHING from the fight in replay. It's sick. I recommend turning on command history for both players and turn on attack details for both players. Simply focus on the times you took damage and understand how it happened and work on not making this mistake that led you taking damage. A lot of it has to do with fundamentals .

This is great to get a handle on how to look at your replays! Super helpful. One thing I would appreciate is if there was also a "what to do/coach notes" section, so if you identify what killed you, how do you go about fixing it and practicing that. But I can imagine that's quite difficult, and this is super helpful regardless.

Learn your frames so you don’t mash when it’s not your turn and know you’re unsafe move (bigger than -9). Slowly learn each matchups (like when Jin was +11/+4). Practice it by playing in frame and not mashing when you can be punished. Not sure how to explain how you practice not whiffing (move in closer? Or like Phi said, maybe don’t push anything and play neutral, you don’t have to always push). Hope that helps. Don’t expect yourself to “fix” it immediately, these things take time.
@charliericker274
@charliericker274 Месяц назад
No you're right this would have been pretty easy what this guy needs to do and he can probably figure it out he needs to get more familiar with the ranges on his attacks because he's whiffing a lot he needs to get more consistent with his combos because he dropped a lot of combos and he needs to pay attention to when his opponent is in heat because he keeps trying to use armor moves in heat and just not use that armor move so much because that's getting him punished.

Been there actually for 2 weeks now and i ain't dropping down nor am I climbing up for the past week despite playing only ranked. I really wanted to hit blue and take a break to watch more twitch or vids on the side to slowly get more accustomed to the chracters as a whole. But jeez I just can't make it to blue. The difference between Raijin+ and purples just feels like I'm legit missing 2-3k hours of experience. The bell curve just feels nuts or I am simply bad lol

We have replays in this game that give you hints and a great practice menu that can help you setup a certain situation. If I lose to something I'm not familiar with then I go to practice and find out if it's a high/low and the frame data as well. Yes, it is time consuming, especially with a character roster of 32, but you will gain knowledge that will only help you.
@thenoobzmaster

What got me promoted from yellow ranks into orange is realization that neutral range is actually one backdash away from starting position. Once I figured that distance out, the vacuum of that distance just sucks people right into power crushes, heat smashes, and launchers. People will whiff. Now, as a vanguard, my cheeks are being clapped by continuously evading Asukas (I'm a Paul). My defense is alright, but I whiff like mad on sidestepping opponents, so now I'm learning sidesteps. I can imagine that once I get to red ranks, the next challenge might be clean inputs and good block punish...

I came from smash bros from the vid coney put out liking your work. Even beyond the fact that you're a good coach who lays out information in a simple yet very effective way, that replay system is insane, as a smash player. Sure, ultimate is 6 years old at this point, but still. If I had to tech to get into modern fgcs, I'd at least try this game out just for polish alone.

The hwo player just like other hwo players they don't block because they are used to do his flowchart strings. All they want is to learn the + frame strings and that's why they lack of any defense skills. His opponent in other hands has to learn how to block or duck his + frame flowchart strings, so he has better defense and ducking skills.

I know you aren't trying to drag this player, but i would really try to convey that he is trying to cover for his lack of fundies by relying on the armor crush. This Jin wasn't aggro, he wasn't a candidate for 5~ armor moves, and he punished them all and then got a big reward after each. Combine that with the dropped combos, lack of whiff punishment, and not understanding of what char has the space advantage and imo he's right where he should be.

15:00 regarding retaliating with an unsafe armor move , I think this is a bad habit that you would pick up fighting at low ranks. Low rank players usually would rush to attack thus baiting them then setting up with an armor move usually works. But as you go up the ranks, you would encounter more patient opponents like what the Jin did here. He did not attack right away and waited a second or two before making his move. Just remember as you go up the ranks a lot of the moves or set ups that work on the lower inexperienced players will not usually work at upper ranks

Yes, if you can play your character even if you don't understand the enemies but know your fast frame punishes like when they do a string throw out your fastest punish after to start to gain knowledge you should quite easily get to purple ranks just by being "good" at your character. And block alot, even if you can't react to grabs that well (I can't and I'm still consistently purple ranks learning grabs and other characters is how I get to the higher ranks) you should be fine, patience and being calm and learn your character.

what makes me very frustrated with how mash friendly and easy it was made to rank up on this tekken is that 1. it makes players focus entirely on the short term and develop a style of gameplay that they will need to "unlearn" in the future if they want to really get better, so it wastes their time, and 2. it's a lot more painful to finally begin to realize how actually bad you are in the game after you plateau at what was once considered the first step towards high rank (fujin). on t7 without any fundamentals you would plateau really low in ranks (with most characters at least) and would have a terrible time dealing with actually skilled players. on t8 people are getting WAY further than they should without knowing sh*t about the game. just to be clear, I don't have a personal problem with that, everyone paid for their game and should play the way they like most. also, it's a matter of game design, not individual player behaviour. the game was MADE to be approached that way. what I really have a problem with is that, in my opinion, this disencourages these new players to learn the game. I had two years of prior experience with tekken and only now, near 3 months of release, I'm finally getting the hang of how to actually use fundamentals to counter mashing. I like to consider me a normal player, not good nor bad in skill. so just imagine someone that has been playing tekken starting with t8 launch. imagine how they will feel knowing that their rank doesn't mean sh*t and that it will probably take many months or even years to develop the fundamentals they need to reach "organically" the rank they achieved by relying on mashing and playing only ft2's. I hope I'm wrong, but this looks like a great way to have a lot of people playing for some months and then just quitting the game for good...

I feel like the one thing that really gives me a fighting chance when someone's either as good or better than me is spacing. Baiting out rage arts, heatsmash etc. Conditioning hasn't really been that much of a factor around red ranks for me as people (from my experience) are pretty locked into their strat but it definitely works against people who are also trying to play mindgames.

2:25 missed a punish, yes. But normally, wind godfist isn't normally something we can see as punishable since we're so used to seeing electrics. In my experience, I'm a kazuya player. I've been getting coached by a TGS kaz, and there's been 2 times where I hit an on block wind god fist and even he doesn't 1,1,2 punish. Personally I think it's fair for a player to never punish a wind god fist when it's generally seen in electric from where it's +5. It's even harder to punish for Jin since his electric normally has very very little pushback. A kazuya wind god fist is easier to punish since you should be used to seeing pushback. And if you don't, 1,1,2 1,1 2,4 1,3,3,3 etc. Currently I main Lee, DVJ, and Kazuya. I've been learning all 3 separately although I've mostly stopped playing kazuya for now because I have the most experience with him. I'm a person who labs to the most extreme extent, I lab optimal combos and before people found the super optimal DVJ combos I was already hitting 132 DMG samsara combos. However I have zero fundamental knowledge. I'm only yellow rank with kaz lee and DVJ, and by no means am I good. All execution, no brain. I've been trying to force myself to neutral with lee to get better at fundi, and fish less for launches and more focusing on learning how to punish various characters, and being consistent yet different on the ways I approach different situations. So far I feel like I've been learning pretty fast.

7:55 I think the reason he actually preemptively used Black Kite was because that’s only available in RFF. If you keep running with Hwo, he will eventually switch back to LFF and Black Kite will not be available anymore. In this case, I’d recommend the Hwo player to use Flying Nerichagi (f,f,f+3) to close the gap and have a more safer option even if blocked

A tip for every hwoarang player: You are allowed to hold back, as agressive heavy as this game is sometimes you just NEED to block man

Just want to add in some of my inputs on this. I don't blame the player, like that -8 frame move, like if you don't know the match up even I would have thought that wasn't safe to hit back, and I'm blue rank and I don't know some of my match up. But I would say be careful how aggressive you get, I see this a lot with low to mid ranks they wil keep pressing button cause they are doing well without looking at health and meter bars. Those are good indication like when you should play a bit safe, aside from rage art, if your opponent heat meter is about to run out be ready for them to try to spam their heat smash out. Overall I hope you don't get down from this match, like my tekken prowess (173k) isn't as high compare to your opponent So I feel like this guy main is probably high Blue or Tekken King.
