May have already been a hairline crack in the top that wasn't immediately visible that was causing the buzzing you spoke about...the impact of hitting the floor just opened the crack up. Hell, it's old! Good ending!

Fortunately, I've never had such a traumatic experience with a guitar. Your TikTok with your wife brings to mind the old guitar players lament: "I worry that when I die, my wife will sell my guitars for what I told her I paid for them..."

You got a dad guitar. Take good care of that old man. As the music teacher in a high school for a couple decades, I had students break guitars on a regular basis. I got into finding out how to repair them and teaching those same students how to fix the guitars they broke. Headstocks were particularly common. It was a good excuse to teach these inner city kids how to use common and not so common tools in a music class.

Yeah.I let a kid who was kinda wild use my favorite guitar I bought in the 80's in NYC but redid it quite a bit myself drop it at a church rehearsal and I about came unglued on him !Right in church! But it was ok so that helped .I had a few other close calls with that one too but it's still my favorite and my go to guitar! A Bill Lawrence strat with the bar magnet pickups!

The first thing I did as a young sailor just out of boot camp was to buy an electric guitar. I found a beautiful sunburst 1966 Epiphone E230TD at a San Diego pawnshop. I totally and completely gave my heart to this instrument, for me it was a dream come true. Then came the day it was stolen out of my car, because I was too lazy to haul it back aboard ship after a late night gig. I experienced all of the emotions you described. It felt like my heart was being torn out. It took me awhile to recover, and added insult to injury, I couldn’t find (or afford ) another Epi like it. This was many years ago, and I have since then owned and loved some incredibly nice guitars, and make it my policy always, no matter how tired I might be, to leave them in the car. I’m glad you had a good outcome from the experience, I did your vids man! Thanks for sharing your story 👍

Hi RJ. Wow, what a story. While not the same I purchased a very expensive handmade acoustic from a Canadian luthier A little over three years ago, and became very attached to the guitar is it just sounds amazing and is fantastic both for gigging and Recording. I’ve played the crap out of it over the past three years, and took it out numerous times over this cold Canadian winter for gigs, not thinking too much about it. The thing I did think about though was the fact that though I was keeping my Guitar room as humidified as possible throughout the winter with two humidifiers running at all times, our house humidifier on our furnace had stopped working due to the fact that the basement would flood every time we turned it on. It was hard to get the humidity up to 20% at the best of times. Finally in early March a friend who is an expert in that field took a look at our house humidifier and told me I just needed about $40 in parts to get it fixed. Within one week or so I had it up and running again, and all seemed good. I took that nice acoustic out of its case for a rehearsal not even one week later and low and behold there was a sizeable crack on the back. I was upset as this guitar was the newest of all my acoustics, and of course was very expensive. Most importantly I just loved it so much. I took it in for a crack repair and everything seems stable now. Part of me was extremely upset with the crack but ultimately now I just feel like the guitar is mine. Battle scars happen, and to me guitars are tools so I really don’t care about them getting dinged up and all that. Hard lesson though when it comes to humidification, and I think I was mainly upset because I tried so hard to keep things as controlled as possible given the circumstances

The moral of the story should be "always check and re-check the condition of the case handles on vintage guitar cases". If they are less then perfect, don't carry the guitar in the case by the handle. Or better yet, buy a new case at the same time you purchase the vintage guitar and immediately transfer the guitar to the new case. Old cases are cool, but only for originally, not for use with a fine vintage guitar. Sorry for your loss, but it could have been much worse. You may also be able to find a really good luthier to hide those cracks better. Good luck with the new guitar!

In my opinion, the story, video and your incredible talent, has already appreciated this guitar. 15 years ago, I bought a Martin 00-18 from 1946 (yeah! Same year as yours). I was supposed to only help appraise it for a friend, and my wife was saying that we might as well keep it ourselves as an investment/ part of our collection. It’s player grade and, at the time was really dirty and in need of a bridge reset. Just as we were discussing the purchase, the plastic stool I was sitting on gave up and I fell hard on my back! I held on to the guitar, protecting it and getting hurt worse than I would have, had I let go of the guitar... long story short(ish), years later I lent it to my band mate for our MTV Unplugged (2020 Fobia), and he gave it new scratches. It is a player grade vintage guitar and it’s story will continue, nick & dings included, long after I leave this earth. We’re just temporary keepers of our vintage gear! P.s.. as I felled, my 1950 Gibson L-50 in pristine condition, was probably laughing from it’s wall hanger...

My uncle gave me his 1947 es-300 he found in his attic. I had to put a good bit into the restoration but it is the most beautiful playing and sounding guitar I’m sure I will ever have now. It feels like an honor to be a custodian of such a piece of history- but it looks like an elephant stomped on it! I love it so much more like that- I don’t have to worry about dinging it up and it has so much more character right there to see. Beat up guitars are the best!

We feel you. I knocked over a 62 Gibson SG, snapped the Head stock off. It was a friend‘s guitar so I was in hot water for a while. Also had a chick guitar player while laughing and jumping around while playing a rehearsal, put a mean dent in my brand new Taylor 314 CE. The first dent is always the hardest, from then on you start to develop a Zen-like attitude about what it is that we do; our stuff gets exposed to the world. Really love your channel, the TickTock video reminds me of lots of conversations I’ve had with female members of my family since I was a kid!

Horror story indeed! You weren't kidding. This tale was borderline traumatic! 😱 🤣 When you got to the part where the handle broke off and the old dilapidated case fell to the floor with the poor old guitar *still in it* - I think I might have even felt a sting of actual *physical pain!* Ouch!!! Very relieved to see that you both - man and guitar - survived this terrible ordeal... 😀

When I was 15, I was the beer pourer at a major amphitheater. Megadeth came to town (Testament opened) and I was late to get there after band practice. I left my late 70's P-Bass in the backseat. No case, no cover, just a sweet late 70's P-Bass sitting out for the world to see. Can you guess where this is going? It gets worse. After a hard night of working and getting yelled at by angry customers (I guess management liked having 15 year olds pour beer because we poured half foam), I returned to the car to find that, in my haste from being late, I had left the back seat window wide open. Wide, wide open. They didn't even need to break into my car, they just lifted the P-Bass right through the window. I was getting paid $4.25 per hour and probably made $21.25 before taxes that night. That late 70's P-Bass (all original, excellent condition) would be worth over $4,000 today. The way you felt as you heard your L-5 hit the floor is a lot like how I felt when I was walking to my car and saw that wide open window.

While we were transferring some tracks to a hard drive in a Nashville studio, I was messing around with a 1960 gold top LP that was on a stand in the control room… putting it back on the stand (& a little distracted maybe) the bottom-heavy beast tipped over. And yes, the headstock broke off. (Not, however, for the first time) I may never have felt quite so sick to my stomach, nor run through all of the “why didn’t I___s?” all at once. Horrifying. So glad your L5 is back in action-enjoy it

Back in the 70s the old Plymouth ran out of gas with my coffee sunburst ES 335 in the trunk. Nice people on the street let me use their phone to call the Ol' Lady. As I walked down the driveway I watched a car come down the road and plow right into the back of my car at full speed. The old Plymouth was totaled, but amazingly the guitar was still playable although the finish was shattered like cracked glass. I was playing loud back in those days so that wasn't the right guitar for me anyway.😏

Time, the healer, the great concealer. I bought a brand new Gretsch Hot Rod online. After it arrived, I spent 5 min inspecting it before I carried it no more than five feet to pick up a guitar strap I had laying on the floor. I bent over to grab it and on the way up, the headstock smashed right into another Gretsch's Bigbsy I had hanging on the wall. Took a nice chunk out of wood out of the headstock. I went for 30 min drive to let my inner Adam Sandler out. Over time it became a funny story and a guitar I really enjoyed over the years!

I feel you my friend. The up side is that there might have been a tendency to baby it before, maybe never take it out and play it on a gig because you might damage it. Now that that ship has sailed you can be more comfortable with it. I always have those mixed emotions about the first ding on anything new: sad that it happened and glad that I can stop worrying about it happening.

That is brutal RJ. One of those very events we hope never to encounter... but did 😑. On the bright side, she was apparently meant for you because now you have added your own signature. Whether you keep her, or whenever she finds another home, you are part of her history. The next owner will call it "patina". In the meatime, keep bringing those great tones and licks, as you both seem to get along just fine!

I would have screamed some variation of "SusMaryOsep!"... I'm really sorry this happened and am glad that there was a satisfactory solution. As a much younger person, I suffered from a lack of judgement and tried to jump up on top of my BF Twin at rehearsal. Twin went over backwards on to the heavily padded carpeted floor, my foot pushed the grille into the cone of one of my brand new EVM12Ls, ripping it. I fell on my face but somehow managed to avoid damaging the '67 ES-335 that I was playing at the time. Ultimately, I glued the speaker back together with toilet paper and nail polish and promised the Universe that I'd never do anything so stupid again.

My first good guitar which I dreamt about and finally got was a brand new Peavey EVH Wolfgang. Mind you, I was 18 and worked my ass off to save for it like we all do. Get it home, super excited. I laid it upright on the couch to go get a drink, come back and it’s on the floor. Huge ding in the finish of the headstock. I was so mad at myself, being so careless. 23 years later I still own it and the rest of the guitar matches that ding. But I feel for you, totally sucks!

Yours was much more traumatic than mine. I had a new Deluxe Am Fender Tele on its first gig in the stand and set up to play. The rhythm guitarist knocked his guitar off its stand and the headstock hit the face of my new cherry sunburst tele. The dent is still there. I thought your review is honestly what I would have gone through. I empathize with you. Hopefully, you'll enjoy the guitar, have a great story to tell, and still end up making money on your investment should you choose to part with it in the future. Always enjoy your videos!

I had a strap lock disintegrate on me and my gold top fell to the floor at practice, creating a huge crack on the neck. The room instantly went dead quiet as my bandmates waited to see what my reaction would be. It was horrifying! I did get it fixed and when I got it back, you couldn't see where the crack had been and it played better and was more stable. Still wouldn't recommend it, but after you get over the initial shock, you realize everything will be okay.

Many years ago I saw a picture of Jeff Beck carrying his Les Paul in its case with the neck of the case pointing backwards and the lid of the case resting against his leg and I thought that's a good idea should the lid pop open you would be able save your most precious guitar falling to its death and hitting the pavement/sidewalk. So to this day that's how I carry my cases! Thanks Jeff and thank you RJ for sharing.
@mikedwiles
@mikedwiles 2 года назад
My uncle always did that. There were a lot of 'not-so-great' cases back in the 60s when he started gigging. Another thing he would do if that wasn't an option is to put his index finger over the top of the case with the rest of his hand in the handle to hold it shut, just in case. I had a Gibson HC case from the 70s and the soft plastic handle split at the seam line of the mold slipping right off the metal bracket on the case. Fortunately, the back mount held till I could sit it down and carry the case under my arm.

I had a traumatic experience. Just got my first electric guitar ever at 16 years old. Had been learning on acoustic for a year or so, and my folks were convinced I was good enough to get a decent electric. So I got one of the old Epiphone Les Pauls made in Korea back in 1996 or so. My buddy comes over a week later, and I had not yet installed strap locks. He picks it up by the strap, and BOOM, it hits headstock first against the ground and bounced up to hit the ground again on the heel close to the output jack. Amazing that the neck or headstock didn't break. Still has some scars from it, but the guitar survived, never needed any repairs or anything. But if he had broken it (and not replaced it himself somehow, we had no money we were 15 or 16) I wouldn't have been able to get a new electric guitar thats for sure.

I feel you R.J. !. so.. This is my story.... Way before I started digging relic guitars, a wind gust made a wooden curtain tip forward my brand new Fender Tele off a cheap upside down V guitar stand. Unluckily, both of the bottom ledges that prevent the guitar from sliding forward pierced through the bottom part of the body and it ended up looking like a viper snake had bitten my guitar. I wanted to die. Nowadays, proudly, those 2 fang holes are the hallmark of what I call a "light relic job" honestly done by the mere ownership and risks of having a guitar out and handy. Long story short, coming from a newly found relic fan, I can't wait for some more scars so my guitar graduates to a bad ass medium relic ala Novo!!! Thanks for sharing your story!

I would have been crying until I got the guitar back! I've dropped and broken 2 different acoustics. One was in a cheap gig bag and the strap broke, guitar hit the floor, cracked the top and broke loose a brace, had it fixed but let the crack visible. Had another acoustic in a much better gig bag/ hard case very well protected unless you sling the case over your shoulder and don't zip the bag.. ouch .. the guitar came flying out and landed on its back, but was fine, actually fixed a problem with the neck was finally able to get the relief out of it.

Well not nearly to the same degree but a guitar that I had fell off the tailgate of my bandmate's truck. We were loading into the bar that we were going to play at and the guitar hit the ground while it was still in a gig bag. This was a Thinline Tele body and when I unzipped the gig bag a cloud of saw dust came out. The body was severly damaged. Luckily I had a 2nd guitar with me but the loss of a main guitar minutes before a gig was enough for me to swear off poorly padded gig bags. It's definitely happened to me more then once. I always tell myself that these accidents add character to the guitar (it helps a little). I know that feeling when it happens, though. You feel totally crushed, like a big weight just dropped on you (like in those Road Runner cartoons with Wile E. Coyote). And I've been there where you keep going over in your mind how things could have somehow gone differently. I'm sorry that it happened to you, though, man. I really am. I'd love to have a beautiful L-5 like that, even with the cracks, but for now I can only dream.

im still pretty new to the hobby, buying cheaper guitars and all for a few years now. But in lockdown, i decided to treat myself to my 1st brand new, 1st owner guitar to make me feel better for losing tours and such. I ordered the Epi orig 50s goldtop thru my buddys shop. When i got it, i took it out of the box and put it down, it immediately fell over and all i could think was there goes the headstock. I literally got nauseous. Fortunately all i did was chip the neck a lil right by the joint. I sanded it a bit and used a touch of tung oil and its really tough to even see now, unless you know its there. But yeah, for a couple days I felt like crap about it

Hello RJ, Your videos are Awesome! So glad the guitar is better than before. I had same experience except on a antique Harley on first day of ownership, I stopped at my driveway gate and left bike running . While closing my gate,I heard bike cut off only to see it fell off kick stand. Resulted in scratched and dented Gas tank. Yeah I fixed it after a 30 second cry too. I think everyone has damaged something once

I did the same with a Gibson Explorer I had. It was the most expensive guitar I'd bought at the time without having to pay it off with finance, I think I'd had it for a week, maybe less and whilst holding it like an idiot it fell off its strap and crashed to the floor, making a massive dent in the headstock. I initially freaked the fuck out until I realised that the seal was effectively broken and I didn't need to baby it anymore. It became my main gigging guitar after than until I sold it last year.

I'm a photographer and I have a lot of sad stories about cameras I've damaged or destroyed, including but not limited to bouncing them down mountainsides or dropping them in rivers. I made the mistake of turning my back on my most expensive, by far, camera, with my most expensive lens, by far, on a tripod on a windy day, which resulted in its doing a nosedive onto rocks. Yay.

Dang RJ that's rough and I have been there. BUT let's spin this... perhaps you've stumbled onto a revolutionary new relicing process a la Tom Murphy where we can send you our vintage stuff and you can bang around on it for a week or two in the basement and charge us some cash! "Professionally Reliced by RJ!". What do you think!? JK

I have an old acoustic (not worth much $) but there’s some loose bracing maybe, and when I dig in the top sounds like it’s overdriving… some players might see that as something that needs fixed, but I think it sounds rad, like a natural acoustic fuzz almost! I try to remind myself that music is mostly about the sounds 😊 I guarantee your guitar has more soul now!

Still looks beautiful to me, and most importantly for any instrument it still sounds great. There's enough players out there like you that care more about how it sounds so I don't think you'll have devalued it that much.

Not to the degree of what you went through but I bought a brand new jazz bass from Guitar Center in the valley in California in the mid 90s. I brought my own soft case to take it home with me. I’m psyched with my new purchase and step out of the store onto the sidewalk and…CRASH!!! The bag strap broke and the bass slammed into the ground. Noooo! I went to my car and pulled the bass out of the bag and there was a huge dent on the edge of the bass and a bunch of paint had chipped off. Such a drag.

Dude. What a beautiful piece of workmanship! That's a shame. I'm glad they were able to make it play again. I had bought a really cool Schekter that turned out to have a lemon Floyd Rose bridge. I spent entire weekends working on balancing and leveling and endlessly tuning. I really wanted to like that guitar but the stress of that malfunctioning bridge was affecting my health. Luckily I was able to trade it for my first tube amp. A Blues Junior with the Italian speaker and even though i still sometimes think about that red, flametop Omen I'm really happy how it all turned out in the end.

It's a beautiful guitar. It's great that Carter's fixed it up for you. But it could have gone sideways on you or the average person. This is a good lesson for everyone on why it's good to have homeowners /renters insurance. Also, check if your CC comes with insurance for purchases, many offer it as an option or it just comes with the card, depending on the card and card company or store associated with the card.

First I hope you can enjoy it as I wish for all you may have and do. I do enjoy a lot to watch you playing. Well, as in al maters I’ve alway love new pristine looking things, no exception with the guitars. Hate when something I have get scratched. I would never, ever have a relic or ever worse a new made like relic guitar. I just don’t like them. But here comes the good thing… I’m a guitar builder. I build my guitars from scratch, even the pickups. If something happens, I can be very relaxed about it because I see this thing very different now than when I used to own an Ibanez J-Custom for example. But I know the feeling you might have experienced and that story made me feel sad for you. Hope I can send you a guitar or a tube amp to make a video this year. Keep doing great stuff. Blessings!! Feeling’ for ya’ brother! Great upside in the fact the buzzing left so even in the worst of situations something positive happens & that’s really cool. I broke the headstock on a 70’s walnut SG years ago. Nothing super special about this particular guitar but I liked it - played well and sounded great. At the time my dad was a hobbyist woodworker and had some really nice glue mixtures. I hadn’t broken it all the way off though I came close. I used a couple different glues and clamped it and that thing was solid as ever and served me well. May you play your guitar in good health for years to come!!

I had a similar story by making a pretty deep ding on the top of a 2019 Gibson Les Paul 59 reissue 60th anniversary only a couple of days after I bought it. By far the most expensive guitar I had bought. Never made a single nick to any of my guitars I have owned for more than 15 years and this one happened and the worst thing is I don’t know how I did it. I assume it was one evening when I played it coming back from an evening with friends where I had probably a couple of drinks too much. But I don’t even know for sure. I got it fixed as much as feasible but I went from pure joy opening the case to pain. I’m actually unsure whether I’ll keep it long term because opening the case only reminds me of how much of a careless idiot I had been. So I totally get your story and can only sympathize!

Hello RJ! I’m sorry to hear that you broke the guitar before you really got to use it because of being a little absent minded. I do agree that you lost some of the value but not much. It was not pristine when you got it. The problem is the worthless case. I would never use it again. It’s like an old handle on an amplifier. Either fix or don’t use it. Maybe it’s a problem that you almost have to restore it just to cover up the big repaired cracks. But even before the new cracks, restoring would have covered up any imperfections that are normal for guitar that old. I think the main thing is that the retailer was able to fix the cracks (and the buzzing) so you still have a great guitar! By the way, in like the second collaboration you did with Brett Papa, you two were just jamming and you ended the tune with these five notes. You both agreed that it was in the Dorian mode. You said it was jazz based. I knew I had heard it before. I can’t find the song but it’s a hidden riff on Harlem Nocturne by the Viscounts. If you know the five notes I’m talking about then you’ll hear them in that song. I loved those five notes so much that I composed a song that starts with those five notes and ends with them. It’s kind of a Latin based melody. If there is such a thing as Spanish blues, then this is it. Have a great day! Take care and think ahead next time.

Bought my first legit guitar many years ago. Larrivee Om-9 I was prob 17 or so, so it’s a lot of money for a kid. I was excited to show my parents so I pick up the case to bring it to them and the guitar fell right out onto the ground. 😣 just got a lil ding but my heart was broken.

I've never owned a vintage guitar before but I would honestly keep that Gibson for the longhaul RJ. I hate that that happened to you but hey, it solved the F-note issue and I think fully functional and a few more is scars is better than no scars and less-optimal performance! And if anything it made it "yours" 🤘
