I've heard good things about the Audio-Technica. It's hard to tell, but are your speakers on the same surface as your turntable? If so, you may want to consider moving them. Placed in close proximity to a turntable, speakers could cause problems. The vibrations could be transferred to your turntable, causing a distortion in sound. Cheers, Frank

While I can understand the thoughts behind speakers and turntable issues being on the same surface, my setup has not caused me any problems. I’m not sure if the bluetac I tend to put under my devices and under the sandwiched unit top makes any difference, or just the fact that I do not play at loud volumes, but I really haven’t noticed any problems from when they were separated. However, I am middle aged and my hearing probably is pants now anyway lol

I'd like to commend you for doing this video, audiophiles can be notorious a holes and highly critical of almost anyone who dares have a different opinion but you put yourself out there and have a great attitude and that actually takes a bit of guts. All that matters is that you are happy with the sound and your having fun.

I've heard you talk about the reverse feature (ability to play records backwards) on your turntable in a couple of videos and I thought I would just hand you this little bit on info. Aside from being able to decode all the backwards lyrics on some well known records, it is probably more meant for "back cueing" records when in a DJ environment. For example, if I'm doing a live show and I'm playing a song from another turntable or CD or whatever, I will be able (with the right mixer) cue up the next record by dropping the needle and listening until it gets to the part where I want to start playing it. Then I would reverse the record half a spin, and stop. Now when it's time for the song to play, I just turn up that channel and hit Start, and away it goes.... all without touching the platter. Cheers, and great videos! Subbed.

Can't thank you enough Jarrett, the Audio Technica LP120 is amazing, on my old turntable (which was the LP60) all my new records skipped ahead (no anti-skate or counter weight). Thanks to your recommendation I upgraded to the LP120, not only do my records not skip ahead anymore but the sound of this turntable is phenomenal. Thanks keep up the good videos

I just purchased the MB 42x's and love the sound. I feel that small, high quality bookshelf speakers have an advantage over large towers. There is a certain focused, tight and controlled experience that can't be equaled will larger speakers. The MB 42's use quality drivers and look very elegant in my opinion. A good tight sub that matches well( as the pioneer that you have) completes the full sound. Great for jazz and well recorded music like Sade or Steely Dan. I love your style and it's really making me consider a turntable!

Nice set up Jarod! My set up is pretty unique (I think) when I see what people have. I DJ, but still, not like how the typical DJ set up looks either. Signal path: Technics sl1200 mk5 TT with Ortofon Nightclub MkII concorde needle--Allen & Heath Zone:92 mixer---Radial MC3 monitor control---M Audio BX8 L+R 5 feet off ground, KRK Rokit 8 L+R on floor (on isolators), and Yamaha SW-P270 Sub on floor (on isolator). Active speaker set-ups inherently have a sound quality limit, which is quite high and easy to achieve. Passive can sound incredible, but crossovers dealing with amplified signals are often under developed and/or poorly calibrated at the manufacturing level to achieve it. My Radial unit has balanced outs (L/R x 2), and an unbalanced Sub out, with separate volume control. With the active speakers and sub, sound is transparent, detailed, abundant, and also serves as my entertainment centre through my Teac DAC via optical/SPDIF/USB. It's a beautiful thing!

Thanks, I enjoy your lectures, really helpful. Now, I'm planning to buy the LP-120 turntable. My audio setup is mainly a powered amp Behringer connected to passive speakers. My question is: can I connect the LP-120 to my amp which doesn't have a phono amp in? Or I need another receiver with a built-in phono amp? Thanks

I plan on getting this table and using the preamp as well. If I ever get a high quality external preamp, I may do the sugary to remove the one built into the table. Not an issue for me as I'm used to taking things apart and putting them back together and rewiring and even some designing of electronics. My receiver is basically the big brother to yours, it looks like, the Yamaha RX-V361. And my 5.1 surround sound setup are KLH speakers I got around 16 years ago. Nothing too high end, but they sound decent enough to me. The motor on my current table (a lower end Sony, the PS-LX250H) burnt out, so that's why I'm looking for something a little nicer. Cheers.

I'd like to ask for your advice on something: I've been listening to my records on an Ion turntable that is intended to be used for converting records to digital files, but I'm just using it as a regular player. It doesn't have a balance or anything like that; all it has is a stop button, a switch between 33's and 45's, and a cueing lever. Do you think this will damage my records? The sound quality is decent, but I am worried that since it doesn't have a tonearm balance, it might not be good for my records.

Loving this channel and the comments. I had a couple questions regarding my setup. Firstly, I was wondering if I should use my JBL LSR305's instead of purchasing some bookshelf speakers. They sound amazing with my recording setup, but was wondering if I should keep those things separate and purchase some dedicated floorstanding speakers/bookshelf speakers for the record player. Second, I want to purchase a record player stand or make one from scratch (made a design on paper all sized up). Do you have any suggestions? I want something dark, either black or a dark wood. Didn't see any made from tree stump/trunks so was thinking that could be fun to make but might ruin the structural integrity carving out space for a receiver/record storage? I don't know... Lastly, I'm looking at either the Technics 1200/1210 or the Audio Technica on ebay since my record player is not up to par. I'm hearing good/bad regarding the Audio Technica LP120. I do like the modern look and features, aesthetically the Pro-Ject players look awesome as well but that beltdrive looks janky. If you had $300 to spend on a record player what would you do? Keep up the good work. -N

I use a Beogram 8000 with a custom MMC20CL that has a nude mounted shibata stylus on a Boron Cantilever. Plugged into my fully restored Beomaster 8000 powering a pair of Beovox Pentas as fronts and CX100s as ambiophonic rears. Sounds sublime.

Know any amps with sub out? Also, can active speakers be plugged to an amp? (I know it's overkill, but I want to buy some edifier active speakers)

I have a Yamaha rx-v465 receiver. When I plug in to the aux, sound and bass sound perfect. When I connect my record player, the bass completely goes away. I have a Sony sa-wmsp4 subwoofer. Any suggestions help.

is the lp-120 motor noisy? how good it sounds out of the box compared to the upgrade you did? i also read that the inbuilt pre-amp is not very good and can't be bypassed 100%. have you tried the audiotechnica lp1240?

Can I connect the same turntable that you have directly to an audio mixer or do I need to place an amplifier before it? Btw, thanks for the awesome videos. They centainly help a lot and inspire people to get into the amazing world of records! Good job.

+Luiz Agner Some mixers have built in amplifiers, so that's the kind you'd want to get. Then connect it to a pair of speakers and you'll be good to go. No problem Luiz! Thanks for watching!

Is there a "Phone" input on the receiver or do you have the switch on the back of the AT-LP120 set to "Line"?

you said you had your bookshelf speakers running off of one channel and the sub on the second channel, does that mean you're doing two speakers playing in mono? or are both speakers playing left or right channel audio?

what kind of parts do you need for all of these? i know i need wire and banana plugs but how would i connect them to the receiver
@vinyleyezz

+Mr Yikes I basically just used 16 Guage Speaker Wire from Amazon to connect from the Receiver to the Speakers. I thought they would need banana plugs, but it turned out that the wire could just be threaded onto the connections.

I actually got the lp120 on my wishlist thanks to you. have ever used a tape deck with the receiver? I'm looking into getting a cassette deck and possibly a cd changer as well. I enjoy all formats. I have been known to surprise people with 8-tracks as well
