Started taking 1000mg 3x a day for the last couple weeks. Usually get the flush whenever taken on an empty stomach but oddly really enjoy the flush. The warm and tingling feeling along with a very relaxed state I find satisfying. The biggest benefit I found is the elimination of a mild brain fog I’ve seemed to have for at least several years also a good increase in energy throughout the day. Hopefully the benefits continue over the weeks and months. By far currently my favourite vitamin/supplement.

There was very little information about supplements and the body at the time. It seemed logical to me to use sauna while experiencing the flushing effect from B3. It may be a good idea to supplement both glycine and TMG in equal dosages alongside high dose niacin supplementation. Niacin can eventually deplete methyl groups in the liver which 'may' lead to liver issues and feeling more tired and rundown. TMG will replete those methyl groups. I've also heard people like Chris Masterjohn talk about timing the dose of niacin to be taken with meals due to the FFA lowering qualities since you don't want to be eating large carb heavy meals when the FFA rebound takes place. Eating during the FFA rebound may increase blood glucose levels much higher than normal which is where certain high dose niacin users eventually developed diabetes.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was 33, and wanted desperately to come off the antipsychotics. I read some books by Dr Abram Hoffer and started taking 2g of niacin daily. I eventually came off meds but have them on hand in case I feel a psychosis coming on. Though the niacin doesn't prevent or get rid of a psychosis like the meds, it does have a stabilifying effect that would have made my last psychosis much worse if I hadn't been taking my niacin.

I started took niacin because I saw it as one of the ingredients in many energy drinks. But when I got the "flush," I thought it was an allergic reaction (I thought it was a mix of niacin and something like black pepper or chili pepper). So I laid off it for years. I came back to niacin after a bit more research and understanding that the flushing effect was "normal". I've been at 300mg every other day for a few weeks and now at every day. Flushing was pretty strong initially, but now it's completely gone. Also, I was taking "Dual Action Pepcid Complete" with some regularity (3 to 5 times a week), only when acid reflux had occurred. I've noticed I don't need as much when I'm on niacin.

I am here because I got wrongly sent a parcel full of Niacinamide (B3) supplements instead of Pantothenic acid (B5). 2 months ago I was megadosing on B5 as it helped me tremendously with controlling my moderately severe acne. However, this time when I ordered my new batch, I did not read the label properly and continued megadosing on Niacinamide (the packaging was the exact same colour and even the pills looked the same). A week later I started to feel my body was floating, like I was so dizzy all the time. The same night I started to experience symptoms, my blood sugar dropped so low that I couldn't even get up. I was sent to the A&E and was immediately hospitalised. Doctors warned of possible organ failure as my blood count was way too low. They suspect it was caused by a toxic medication and when I got home after being discharged, I saw to my horror what I had been unknowingly taking. So please do your proper research before self supplementing! B3 is poisonous in high levels and I do not recommend taking more than 500mg a day to be safe.

Frank, This is going to sound hard to believe. But recently a system of products got released by a guy that is the best thing I've ever seen for recovering hairloss. I heard the guy on a podcast and was extremely skeptical but having tried many different things to recover hairloss I found his experience really relatable. I took the plunge and not only tried his products but joined his Facebook group for others buying his products where he'd engage with us and give us insight and trainings on how to go about successfully recovering our hairlines. All of us, recovered our hair. I'm off finasteride as well. At the core of what he discovered was that the main culprit for hairloss is that dht clogs blood flow to the hairline. Similar to how your aeries get clogged, hair follicles get can't recieve nutrients anymore. His system involved cleaning your head of the shit and returning blood flow back to your scalp. Along with buying his products he recommended we all get niacin for the flush and it's ability to stimulate bloodflow to your head. That's how I first started taking niacin, before i got into it for longevity. Your observation is correct that it improves hair health

I have been using 5 g of niacin nightly for cholesterol. My cholesterol is just about perfect. I reduced the overall cholesterol level by 100 points. I cut my triglycerides in half. Elevated my HDL and lowered my LDL. The one effect that has been negative is the bile production caused. I had my gallbladder removed and there are mornings when I wake up and vomit bile in copious amounts. Not the way to start your day! I'm doing some research now to see if it would be better for me to take the niacin during the day with meals versus taking 5 g at once. I don't really have a problem with the flushing because I have trained myself by taking it at night before bed. And over a long period of time several months I increased the dose. I would go for blood work every 3 months and would increase by about a gram each time. The magic number for me is 5 g. I tried backing off to 4 g and my cholesterol numbers were not to my satisfaction. I'd be interested to hear what you have to say.

I am experimenting with using the niacin flush as a way to build a tolerance to histamine, stress, and auto-immune related issues. Since there's a short term spike in histamine, adrenaline, cortisol my theory is that the body should learn how to better manage these things and over time learn not to respond with an autoimmune reaction since the body returns back to baseline relatively quickly and realizes everything is fine. I also find it helpful as a way to train how to remain mentally calm during the flush as a way to get better at managing stress, similar to taking cold showers.

I take several supplements to boost glutathione, nitric oxide, NAD+, and vitamin D. I also take TMG as a methyl donor to counter B3 which is a methyl acceptor. I have a MTHFR mutation which predisposes me to high homocysteine. Many supplements (like NAC) boosts glutathione and nitric oxide as well as lower homocysteine and blood pressure. Thanks for the great content on an important topic. It would be great if you could go deeper in depth into the protocols for how to take high dose Niacin. Like, what time of day to take, the minimum quantity of carbs needed to take with dose, to reduce liver toxicity, etc. I've been experimenting on myself trying different protocols and getting blood tests to see the results with some mixed success. There is very little info out there on how to structure and time and type of macro nutrient intake. Chris Masterjohn PhD has covered the topic well, but I still think there;s room to distill this down for regular folks like myself, so we can really grasp the concept. Breakdown of what Chris Masterjohhn PhD stated on high hose Niacin: The body is really good at using carbohydrates in the 2 hrs after taking Niacin. (Suppresses Free Fatty Acids > Surpasses release & use of FAT for fuel, it preferentially burns Carbohydrates) The body is really Terrible at using carbohydrates in the 3-6 hours after taking Niacin. After 3 hours there's a huge release of Free fatty acids Huge rebound in Fatty Acids- higher than they would usually be. So... Eat a high carbohydrate (LOW FAT) Meal when you take Niacin, within 1-2 hours. Eating carbs also buffers impact on Liver AND THEN FAST AFTER!!! AVOID Carbohydrates in 3-6 hour window AFTER taking Niacin. AVOID FATs during the 6 hours after taking Niacin. To help support Liver methylation and to reduce risk of harm to liver, take Niacin with: Equal dose TMG (Betaine) 1/2 to 1 equal dose Glycine
