I know I’m two years late at this point, but I believe the very oddball loopy yarn is supposed to be a finger looping yarn. It’s a technique where you work the loops into each other to create a fabric.
Hi Jayda, I am knitting the blanket, but I do prefer to crochet. It is lovely to hear from you, as I watch your videos all the time - they are amazing and extremely helpful to someone young like myself, and have given me confidence in doing crochet. 🌞
Hi ive made beautiful baby blankets with the pom pom yarn and everybody loved them, sold them at craft fairs and people came back for more, I did knit them , I could not crochet then. But thanks to your fantastic tutorials I can now crochet even the most complicated pattern. I have recommended your site to a few people and they are now learning to crochet with you . I thought at 70 I was to old to learn but I have proved your never ever to old to learn Kind regards Carol France
Hi! I used the pomp-a-doodle on a baby's blanket: I used variegated yarn and laid the string part of the pomp-a-d along the edge I was crocheting and crocheted over it. When I came to a pom-pom I let it show through (all on the same side) and then continued to crochet over the string part until I came to the next pom-pom. I think I searched pinterest for the idea... It looks quite nice. No pic yet. M
Inspired by one of your videos, last year I crocheted an ENORMOUS striped scrapghan with a bunch of eyelash-y yarns leftover from my very first knitting project I made about 12 years ago. Thanks for all of your help, Jayda, you're an excellent teacher!
with you red Grey and white loopy yarn that matches your jacket I would make a base to stitch it on to. hat or scarf, so it can still match your jacket and you can get the loop effect. love your projects and your bubbly personality.
I had a random assortment of small balls of most of these yarns, those and thin baby yarn. What I did was I got all of those yarns and doubled up the novelty yarn with the baby yarn or anything that was straight (worsted weight, etc) and made C2C blankets for my churches quilting group that have since donated those blankets to our home bound members who are too ill to come to church. But it burdened through ALL of my scrap yarn and unwanted yarn that I don't like working with.
Amy Howell Usually those projects go in a tote labeled WIP (Work in Progress) for me. I find if I force myself to finish, I end up either making major mistakes or hating it. Right now I have 3 projects waiting. I make sure I keep a copy of the pattern with the row I'm on and the hook size in pencil together with the yarn. I go back to wips as I get bored with other projects to give me a change of pace.
Another suggestion: put your WIP aside and work on something small or something that needs many parts, ex: make hearts, leaves, stars, triangles, different size squares to make into scarves or blankets. Put the hearts or leaves on a wreath. Make the stars or triangles into a bunting. You basically need a break from project, so work on another. Oh, when you make the small pieces for a bigger project, be sure to store them in a bag, so as to not lose them and keep them clean.
I hear you. I just want to crochet what I want to when I want to. it results in tons of WIPs going at the same time and I actually will switch out when I get bored with it. this way they all get worked on without me letting it sit for days.
Hi Amy, I often run into projects that either get boring or I get a bit of a block on. If it sits in my WIP bucket for more than a year, then I take the whole thing apart and reuse the yarn for something else!
I used the eyelash yarns with 2, sometimes 3 other yarns for a throw rug. My beautician and daughter LOVED the soft rug to rub their feet in after being on their feet all day. The chunky yarn I used for a throw rug as well.
Jayda InStitches I got the idea from your video of the scrapghan where u used 2 different colored yarns together which was a TOTALLY new concept for me! I LOVE using 2 and 3 yarns together especially for throw rugs that u want to b thicker. I LOVE all your ideas and videos!
I donated all my weird yarns to a crochet shop that has classes for kids. I really enjoyed making 2 or 3 hats and scarves out of them, but for years they just sat in my stash. You have some great ideas though. Thanks for this video :)
Loved your video about weird yarns. I, too, have such a stash. I have used some of my stash to make knitted squares which I have sewn together to make a lovely unusual blanket for those nippy evenings. As far as the Pomp-a-Doodle yarn, I have knitted this yarn and made simple hanger covers which give a lovely cushioning, non-slip finish for clothes - stops clothing slipping or developing those odd shapes in them. Hope this helps.
I bought some fun yarns back in college, which was a while ago. I made some boa scarves with eyelash yarn (I think eyelash yarn was a new craze back then). I crocheted slippers with some chenille yarn, but I found that knitting was less stressful on the yarn than knitting was. My older sister knitted a toddler-sized cardigan and hat for my little sister a few years ago, out of eyelash yarn. It looked like a fur coat! (If rainbow-sherbet-colored fur exists.)
Hi Jayda: I made many things from your web.. You are always precise and easy to follow...Right now I am working on the double crochet chevron wave. Making my Grandson a New York Rangers throw in that stitch. Just to pass a compliment to you and thank you for all the beautiful crochet patterns. Lucille
Hi Jayda , thanks for this video on weird yarn. Speaking of yarn, this morning I found out that someone broke into my car last night and stole a big zippered bag that was stuffed with my most beautiful my most loved and fantastic shawls, a total of 8, Id been crocheting for years (several of them following your instruction) As you can imagine Im devastated. They actually wiped me out as I had packed my trunk with clothes shoes purses as Im moving. They took everything but the thing that wounds me most is losing my shawls. See I had planned to leave them as heirlooms for my daughters granddaughters friends.... anyhow I guess now I must begin again and I will!! i have no word for surrender!!I Ijust thought Id tell you my sad story Jayda b/c I knew youd understand. Love and Peace to you my friend....
Oh, so sorry that happened to you. I would be devastated too. Don't know how people can live with themselves after being so mean. Regards from Australia.
So sorry to hear of the loss of your projects. I, too, would be devastated to have someone take all the work I put in to my projects and take the bag, just b/c. I wish there was a way that I could help out. In the mean time, my best to you and hope everything works out. Stay strong and keep crocheting.
Hi Ilza, that is just awful! I'm certain that whoever took those bags will not have anything close to an idea of how valuable they were. I agree, the things we pour our heart and soul into can be such a terrible loss if they disappear. Good for you for starting again! I hope you enjoy the new shawls you create even more!
Thanks for your awesome tips. The pompom yarn turns out nice if you make a knitted pillow. It is very fluffy and soft for a pillow which is perfect. I think a 9mm or us size m/n 13 needles works great for this yarn. Thanks again
I crochet spiral scatter mats from my scraps, kinda like your scraptastic blankets, and I will incorporate various "funky" yarns for texture and such. That loopy yarn would be great perhaps on the outer edge of the mat. Hopefully no one would catch their toes it it!
Hello Jayda, for the pompom yarn I made it into a crochet pillow like the popcorn stitch but instead of making the popcorn ball I used the pompom. It made it more colourful and soft (hope this makes sense)
Hi Joan, I agree! It would make pretty neat trim...I'm still holding out hope that I can attach it to something to wear with my ski jacket LOL, something that won't feel quite so hot!
I used the pompom yarn as an edging on a hat I created years ago. I would suggest looking at the labels to see what pattern they provide... Also search google for pattern using the yarns you have.
Oh dear... got it, got it, got lots of it... LOL I have a tub of eyelash and other such yarns, plus some of the bigger ones in my cupboard. The trouble is, I am having a difficult time doing anything right now because of my health, but once I can do things again, I will get back to it. Thank you so much for the ideas on what to do with all these weird yarns. I buy most of my yarn at thrift stores and get some really great yarns, but there is generally some weird yarn tucked into the same bag and I just stick it into a bin until I can figure it out. :) Life as a yarner...
Hi Ebba, yes, life as a yarner LOL. I love those thrift store finds, and yes, they always sneak in a weird ball or two, don't they! I hope you're feeling better soon :)
Hey Jayda., on the loopy yarn, I believe your supposed to crochet a certain amt of single crochet, go back into same stitch n putt it thru the loop n move on that way. Row by row till end then there’s a way to end the last row so it won’t come out, I can’t remember it. I think Crystal may know this one… try asking her… ❤️
For the Gazoom, finish that hat and make matching mittens - then go to Antarctica! Visit penguins with something that toasty warm! For the pompoms, I'd double that yarn up with a thicker yarn and just use the two together.
That's funny I have some balls of yarn I purchased like that too and now I don't know what to do with them LOL !!! I also have leftover yarn from projects and it's not enough to do anything with. ,,,But I cannot throw it away yarn is to valuable ,I'm just going to hang on to it .,,,,I put all my scraps in a big bag and someday put all the scraps together and make a scrap Afghan👍 thank you Jayda your crochet friend Sue💕
Very nice. The only weird yarn I’ve encounter is bernat pipsqueak, which I made socks and pillows out of, and the loopy yarn, which I just cut the loops out of at just the right spot so that the loops disappeared, but the yarn wasn’t really cut. Thats a great idea for the suede, I wish I had some! But do you think you could do a tutorial on your crocheted fedoras? but not necessarily made with suede, but with any kind of yarn. I don’t know, just a thought.
OMG!!! I just pulled out 3 shopping bags of the boa/fun fur/and eyelash yarn :-) , thought I was the only one. Besides being easily tangled, it's much easier to knit with. What I've been doing with them and you can do with the pompom yarn, I would find either a contrasting solid color yarn or one in the same color and use it as one. The one where you have the 3 colors, I would match solids and make a blanket or throw simply garter stitch (using the grandma dishcloth pattern which works on the diagonally ) for a older little girl
Just a thought. Why not use the pomp a doodle yarn for a pillow. You could crochet the base fabric and use this as you would for a contrast design. Run this yarn across the top of your crochet and crochet around the back of the poms so they stick out on the front of the fabric. Sort of like when you are working a graph pattern using two different color yarns and you carry the unused yarn (the poms) along the top of the stitching till it is needed.
OMG YESSS I KNOW EXACTLY BOUT THAT YARN (the first one) SOME ONE GAVE ME THAT AND I don't have enough of each colour for anything! I have no idea what to do with it!!! All i know is its good for edgings
I know what you mean (doubles) Mine was in 3 50 gal. totes until this week, my husband got me 2 shelvings at Walmart that have 8 cubbies in each and now I can see everything that I have so much better :)
The fun fur and eyelash yarn make a nice fur for stuffed animals. The other yarn that's red, white, and grey I would make a wreath with. Cover Christmas balls and attach to a wreath. The pom pom yarn I would make a striped throw with a few rows of solid yarn than 1 row of pom pom yarn.
The blue multi thickness yarn I have had a couple different ones given to me. I have knitted both into ponchos. I just don't like the way they look crocheted. The pomp a doodle ...... would make a cute garland. Maybe crochet some stars or something and attach them in between the pompoms
I have most of this weird yarn as well!! I got it when I first started crocheting, Ill be honest haven't touched one of those balls yet, as i found it hard to crochet with that yarn
I know what you could make with the bernat gazoom you could make a rug or a mat because I have one and it looks like that wool so maybe you could crochet it 😊
Hi Mia, I don't have enough of it for a run, at least, not if I crochet or knit...but I might be able to sew it all together and come up with a little, fluffy area rug that way!
I was given a bag of fun fur and I loved so much I made a couple scarfs with it. I think that yarn you were talking about that you made a hat out of that was wayyy to hot to wear I agree you should use that for trim on a blanket that would look awesome.
Hi! Thank you for all the time and talent you share. I recently bought Bernat chenille in a soft brown and also cream thinking to make a cushy teddy bear. Unfortunately, I am having a terrible time seeing individual stitches and following a pattern accurately. Do you have any handy hints for dealing with such thick yarn? Thank you again! I love your creations and your spirit.
Hi Elisa, thank you for watching! We've used some of that blanket yarn recently on the show in a Big Fluffy Star pillow pattern! If you want to check out the video you can find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oqODu07OFdU.html You might find watching it get built into a project (along with some of the little things I say) helpful :)
I used the fun fir yarn for a wreath. Used a Styrofoam wreath form and just wrap the yarn around and around. Then add any embellishments you want. So just another idea.
With the last two yarns, what might be easier is to make a mesh in a thin but normal yarn, and then slip stitch the fancy yarn to the mesh. I did this with a doll's jacket and it looks amazing.
Jada I would love to see a closure fedora hat pattern. Not necessarily and those Yarns. I'm legally blind and very light sensitive so I wear hats everywhere to protect my eyes from the lights. And a small brim is what I need so that it doesn't cover what that I can see. I hope you consider that. I love your videos!
Love you Jayda! Could you teach us how to work borders into raw edges on afgans? It's something I can't quite figure out. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Hi Mandy, you might find our Fan Stitch Baby Blanket tutorial helpful for that, I go through working a simple single crochet foundation border stitch on to the raw edge of that blanket which is full of double crochets and ch-3s :) You'll find the that video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ctfSucGmwCo.html
I just went to Walmart today and got a fluffy type yarn and baby yarn and Lion Brand yarn and I even got a cake yarn it's one of the cake pop Yarns just thought to share that with you and also got some new crocheting hooks as well
My mom makes hair scrunchies and crochets around the top of flip flops with the eyelash and pom pom yarn. I am just learning to crochet, so I haven't messed with it yet, it looks too daunting! Lol
Those are some great uses for the weird balls of yarn! Especially the soft stuf :) It definitely takes a little getting used to, but some of it can be really fun to work with!
I have weirdo ones as well. please do an eyelash yarn tutorials for anything, that would be awesome. I have strange tiny ostrich yarn that is so pretty. No idea what to do with it. I like to buy grab bags. at the thrift store and end up with a few odd lots :-) thanks have a good day!
I have some yarn similar to the Bernat Gazoo that you have. It consists of a long strand with loops running along it. It feels like it could be a roving type texture, but I don't think it's wool since it didn't pass my burn test. Anyways, I didn't notice the loopy texture of it until I got home, and I didn't particularly like it. So, I carefully removed the string holding the loops together, and now it's just one continuous strand without all of the loops.
Wow! I might try that on a sample of the Gazoom and see what happens! I really love the colours so I am motivated to use this yarn for something to go with my ski jacket :)
It may work, but it also looks like the chenille texture of it might make it tricky to pull off. I'd still try it, though. I'd like to know how it goes. xD
Jayda I just came across this video today...I was so hoping you had an odd ball of Red Heart sashay yarn...oh dear what to do with it!!!! I'm all scarfed out!!! Lol
Hi Kimberly! It's definitely a good one to use as little details on other projects: cuffs on stockings or slippers, embroidery on other projects; even used in card-making or scrapbooking!
For that gazoom yarn u could make a sheep using the loop stich then cut the loops it looks like sheep wool or fur my grandma has done that once with a simular type of yarn 🐑
Hi Ana! It's so funny that you should mention using the Gazoom for dusting, that's what my mother-in-law suggested (she's done a few like that!) I think I'm going to give that a try :)
I have some lion brand suede that a friend gave me not sure what to make with it and it calls for a9 mm don't have one😥 so right now it just sits and waits lol great reviews
