The magnificent Barbara Cook sings "My White Knight" from Meredith Wilson's THE MUSIC MAN. Barbara Cook created the role of Marian in the original Broadway production which co-starred the great Robert Preston as Harold Hill. THE MUSIC MAN opened on December 19,1957 at the Majestic Theatre in New York City. It closed on October 22,1960 after a run of 1,375 performances. The original cast recording was made by Capitol Records and recorded on December 29, 1957.

MY WHITE KNIGHT (LYRICS)
"My white knight, not a Lancelot, nor an angel with wings.
Just someone to love me, who is not ashamed of a few nice things.
My white knight what my heart would say if it only knew how.
Please, dear Venus, show me now.
All I want is a plain man,
All I want is a modest man,
A quiet man, a gentle man,
A straightforward and honest man.
To sit with me in a cottage somewhere in the state of Iowa.
And I would like him to be more interested in me than he is in himself.
And more interested in us than in me.
And if occasionally he'd ponder
what make Shakespeare and Beethoven great,
Him I could love till I die. Him I could love till I die.
My white knight, not a Lancelot, nor an angel with wings.
Just someone to love me, who is not ashamed of a few nice things.
My white knight, let me walk with him where others ride by
Walk and love him till I die, till I die."

I heard an interview with Meredith Willson, who said that "My White Knight" was originally intended to be sung as a duet simultaneously with "The Sadder But Wiser Girl for Me" (just like "Lida Rose" and "Will I Ever Tell You"). The juxtaposition of the two songs would obviously demonstrate the irony of what each character was seeking in a romantic partner. Mr. Willson said they ultimately couldn't find an appropriate point in the story for the duet. His wife had a beautiful soprano voice and they sang it together during the interview. Next time you hear "The Sadder But Wiser Girl for Me" try singing "My White Knight" along with it. It works!

Hi Denise! Thanks so very much for your comment and the very interesting history of the song. As for this song, I think it is one of the most wonderful, revealing, intimate and introspective songs I've ever heard. And, to my mind, it is as revealing and intimate as "My Time Of Day" from GUYS & DOLLS (and please, the Robert Alda OCA version ONLY. All others pale.). And here's an interesting Broadway legend, which you may indeed know. It is believed, by many, that Frank Loesser actually wrote "My White Knight." Considering the song, its compositional style, etc. It seems a very real possibility when looking at the the evidence presented. Interesting, eh??? All the very best for a good new year!

No-one like Barbara - a great voice but also a great communicator. She understood that a song was a felt emotion so it always sounded like her own life story not just pretty notes. Rebecca Luke’s also had that quality. I saw Barbara in concert in later years extraordinary then - how I wish I’d seen her in a show like THE MUSIC MAN or CANDIDE!

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Graham. I never saw Barbara Cook in performance. One of my great artistic regrets to be sure. I agree with you wholeheartedly. She was a communicator. She told (and sold)the story; not just the tune. Her performance of "Too Many Mornings" with George Hearn is one of the greatest Musical Theatre duet performances of all time. Ciao!

Stunning. So great to rediscover this from when my dad bought the Broadway album when I was only six. This song and album influenced my own interest in singing and being a musician. They just don't write 'em like this anymore.

Barbara Cook on Broadway and Patricia Lambert in London could both master the final top note but it seems they modified the screen version for Shirley Jones into ‘Being in Love’ so that she wasn’t as challenged.

You are quite right. And the musical changes made in the movie were, to my mind, thoughtless, pointless and ultimately damaging to the story. But this is nothing new. Look at what Hollywood did with PAINT YOUR WAGON. Who would you rather hear sing "I Talk To The Trees"? Clint Eastwood or Tony Bavar?

Thank you so much for viewing the video. I'm glad you enjoyed. I'm afraid I don't know which costume Barbara Cook wore for the scene in which she sang this song. What a stellar talent she was. Her life is an incredible example of the strength and beauty of the human spirit. Ciao!
