@HoldenHardman - 28:29 - The crow comic released in 1989. Until Catwoman appeared in Batman Returns (1992), there wasn’t much pointing to her having any real powers. I also don’t recall the scene from the movie (giving her a supernatural connection with cats) being in any of the comics. From what I know of the character Catwoman, like Batman, was (and still is, within the comics) just incredibly skilled.

The girl was extremely important for the film, the plot and especially Eric. It is the connection to Eric that preserves his humanity. It is also the last living connection to his wife. Without her, it's just a revenge story. The girl is also a promise of what has been given to be fulfilled. To take care of her if something happens to Sheryl. So Eric came back not only for revenge, but also for her to make sure she was taken care of.

Also fun fact: The crow's name was Magic. Even for a performing bird, he was exceptualy intelligent. He could speak on command, fly off into the air and land on a specific mark every time. AND, near the end of the film, he even did his own stunt of rolling over off the surface to "Play Dead" landing on a small blanket behind it. (In the scene where the bad guy shoots him). He was so professional, that he was the only bird they used during production. He then went on to star in BOTH, of this film's sequels as the titular raven. No one ever hired a second bird when they had Magic on call. He sadly died of old age about 5 years after filming #3. But as far as working pets go, he was a master class Broadway theater trained actor all the way !!!!

The actual comic book was written by James OBarr who has one of the saddest lives I’ve ever heard of. He doesn’t know his birthday because his mother was shit faced when she had him. He went through the Detroit child system and never made a friend until he fell in love with a girl. He couldn’t afford his car payments and she came to pick him up from work and was killed by a drunk driver on the way. He wrote this book after being in the marines and having to draw service manuals of dead people. When he got out of the marines he planned on killing the drunk driver who killed his love only to find that he was already dead. Brandon Lee was a massive fan who could quote the comics and when he died during filming James blamed himself for the death of his new friend. This story should be treasured as a time capsule of its time.

I was a huge Brandon Lee fan as a kid. I loved him in Showdown in Little Tokyo and I wore out my VHS copy of Rapid Fire from watching it so many times. I was devastated when he died. He was laid to rest on my 14th birthday, April 3rd 1993. To this day, this film and its soundtrack/score are my favorite things to come from the 90s. RIP Brandon. Rapid Fire was a decent flick, too, with Powers Boothe. Speaking of Powers Boothe, you should watch Extreme Prejudice. with Boothe, Nick Nolte, Michael Ironside, Rip Torn, Clancy Brown, William Forsythe, Maria Conchita Alonso. Solid cast, and its an 80s version of a Peckinpah film, with the biggest shootout in just about any film previous to it.

“One man's heart is full of deceit, it burns up, dies, and a dark shadow falls over his soul. From the ashes of a once great man has risen a curse. A wrong that must be righted. We look to the sky for a vindicator, someone to strike fear in to the black heart of the same man who created him. A battle between good and evil has begun. Against an army of shadows comes a dark warrior. The purveyor of good, with the voice of silence, and a mission of justice.... This is Sting.” The wrestler Sting back in the 90’s changed his gimmick to mirror the Crow, although he admitted he never saw the film from beginning to end. He credited Scott Hall who suggested the change.

While Batman Returns (1992) came out before the Crow (1994), the Crow is based on the novel which came out in 1989. and to the best of my knowledge Catwoman in the comics is just a regular woman with gymnastic/martial arts/thieving skills. so, the being "revived from an animal" thing came from the crow, and the "falling from a window" thing came from Batman Returns, in the novel Eric is shot in the head. so, both movies change things from the comics.

In the movie, there is a direct reference to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven". Specifically, Eric Draven (played by Brandon Lee) quotes the line: "Suddenly I heard a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door." This line is spoken by Eric Draven after he breaks down the door to Gideon's pawn shop. He then follows up the quote by asking, "You heard me rapping, right?" This reference to Poe's famous poem adds to the dark and gothic atmosphere of the film, while also showcasing Eric Draven's literary knowledge and wit, even in his undead state seeking vengeance.

The gang leader reads from Milton's Paradise Lost, where the Devil is cast down from heaven and begins his revenge against God on Earth. Also, "Mother is the name for God ... " is from William Makepeace Thackeray's classic Vanity Fair (somewhere near the middle, I think). Both Milton and Thackeray are English; Poe was only obvious American Literary reference, but the symbolism with the corvid link was a nice touch. The author of The Crow was heavily anglophile and these tastes were also reflected in the score -- The Cure (who did the song Burn in the film) are English and Dead Souls was a song by the famous English band Joy Division (albeit brilliantly covered in this movie by Trent Reznor's 'band' Nine Inch Nails), both bands were favourites of the graphic novel's writer.

They took a few shortcuts from the source material. Eric wasn't supposed to have lost his power because the crow was hurt. He was sent back to avenge Shelly, and when he thought his task was done it was supposed to be over. Rescuing Sarah was outside of his purpose, so his power was taken away, but when he found out Top Dollar ordered their murder, he was back on-task. Since they cut the part of the story where he was sent back, that part got a little blurred, but under the complete story, Eric knew he was at risk for doing it.
@whiskersnbeans

Helping Darla also wasn't part of his mission. There's a cut scene showing Funboy getting out of the bathtub and coming up behind Eric with the razor that was taken from Darla and thrown to the floor. Funboy cut Eric pretty good before Eric got back the upper hand. That's why he's all bound with electrical tape around his arms, hands, and midsection after that scene. Because those wounds were sustained outside of his mission, they didn't heal.

Almost every shot in the abandoned apartment is not Brandon. That’s why you don’t see his face. When he’s applying makeup in the shattered mirror, it’s fake, the reenactment of his death where he swings out the window, reliving the shooting, hugging Sara. Even the lightning shot with the crow on his shoulder isn’t him. They overlayed his face on the stunt double. Him walking down a leaky hallway is a copy of him walking in the alley, they added drips of water leaking from the ceiling to make it look like he should still be wet. Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon is still alive & she has a daughter too I believe, but in a lot of Asian culture, the sons are often viewed as the ones who carry on the name & legacy, since daughter's often take on their spouse's surnames. So in the original story plot of the film, there was a charcter named the Skull Cowboy. He was like a grim reaper character who sent the crow to Eric in the graveyard and basically told him he was on a mission to get revenge and right the wrongs. In a deleted scene, he appears at the entrance to the church when Eric is running in to save Sara and basically tells him that this is not part of his mission. His mission is over, he got the ones who killed them and now must return to the dead. Eric basically says 'no, I can't abandon her to die'. So the Skull Cowboy says if you go, you go alone (meaning he will no longer be immortal) and if he fails, he may be damned to purgatory forever. Eric again says he's not leaving Sara, so the skull cowboy vanishes through him (takes his invincibility) and then Eric enters the church knowing he could now be hurt. This is why even though the bird is only wounded, he still lost his powers because he was already supposed to in script. This is also why when the big bad boss (who's name is Top Dollar) admits to him that he was the one who set the hit against them, Eric realizes his mission isn't fully over and he's able to recall the power of vision to force Top Doallar to see and feel what Shelly felt in her final moments. After Lee's death they had to do a few rewrites of the script and cut out stuff and unfortunately the skull cowboy and that plot line got cut out and they threw in the "kill the crow, destroy the man" bit to explain the ending. If there is one minor critique I would give this movie (its one my all time favorites) it would be that they should have kept to the original story line and kept the skull cowboy.

It was the first movie I’ve seen in theaters that I wanted to walk out of. Same goes for my fiancé. It easily ranks in my least favorite movies of all time. I did not like the back story for Eric and Shelly and where they are at in their lives. I cared substantially more about Eric and Shelly through flashbacks rather than the heavier emphasis they put in the newer one. The dialogue was poor, it wasn’t gothic or dark but “mopey” and just did not come off as authentic like it does in the 1994 version. Didn’t want to compare the two but man, I just really did not like the new one. I wanted them to do something different, which they did, but it did not land for me. That’s my TED Talk 😂

The ending of this movie is incredibly poetic. Eric comes back from the dead to avenge his wife’s death then returns to his grave to spend eternity with her. Perfect. I also love the gothic noir look and feel of this film. It’s pure art. This movie and its main character were in no way an inspiration for Heath Ledger’s Joker. In fact Heath and director Christopher Nolan took their ideas for the Joker from a variety of other sources. For example, the inspiration for his makeup actually came from the original Tim Burton Batman film. In the scene where the Joker is destroying the art gallery and he stops one of his thugs from destroying a painting citing his reason as being “I kinda like this one”, that painting was used by Chris Nolan as a template for his Joker’s make up style. The inspiration for his voice came from actor/singer Tom Waits. The rest Heath took from the mannerisms of a heroine addict.

The Sarah character is sort of a sign of hope in an otherwise depressing setting. If her character wasn’t in this, then I sorta feel like a lot of the movie would unravel because one Eric has to rescue her at the end which leads to the showdown. And there are a bunch of seems with Sarah that help ground the film. Without it, the movie might be too big if that makes sense. Plus you get a little redemption arc with her mom, which in turn shows Eric still cares about things not just revenge.

In the graphic novel, Sara has a much smaller role, and is a complete stranger to Eric, jjust a wayward kid who was treated like Crap, that Eric encounters, talks with and helps out. Also, J. O'Barr, the writer of the graphic novel wrote this as a way of dealing with his own grief after losing his Fiance to a drunk driver. He was very opposed to the idea of this being made a movie until Brandon approached him. When Brandon died, O'Barr fell into depression, feeling somehow responsible.

The purpose for his face paint. Eric, understandably, has a little trouble coping after he has the flashback and realizes that he has been brought back from the dead to take vengeance. The Eric who was killed was not a violent person, so he creates a persona that can be. He is driven a little insane by the circumstances.

Michael Wincott's character, Top Dollar, was the boss of the crew who killed Shelly & Eric. He directed the crew to get rid of anyone in the buildings he wanted. So without him, they might not have died. While in the comics Top Dollar is simply one of T-bird's crew, they changed him to be the architect of their deaths rather than just have it be random violence. While Jen is right in that they could've eliminated the big boss and Sarah (although she's also in the comic but with a different name and backstory), the would've shortened an already short movie. In case someone hasn't brought this up, the actor who accidentally shot Brandon was Michael Massee who played Funboy. IIRC it took place when Eric confronts Funboy in his loft. Michael Massee was indeed extremely broken up about it until his death a few uears ago. He was a great character actor, he also had a small part in The Amazing Spider-Man.

More specifically, Top Dollar already owned the building - he was evicting people so he could burn it down with less attention to what caused the fire (when a fire kills people, they get investigated a little closer). This practice was what created Devil's Night IRL - greedy landlords who burned down their own buildings for the insurance money. Usually they had a few cops and insurance agents in their pocket, too.

So, this is based on the graphic novel: The Crow. The city was originally in Detroit. As a kid growing up in the 70's, 80's & 90"s in Detroit Oct 30th was always known as Devil's Night and hundreds of fires would be set in the city and the news would cover how many fires would be set on that night. It would always be scary because we had to stay up to make sure our house wouldn't catch on fire. Today Oct 30 is known as Angel's Night in Detroit. The author of The Crow wrote this after his love was killed which is just as tragic. This movie always tears me up, Love it! Anyway, I love your reactions.

Eric's face paint is the mask of comedy, which mirrors the tragedy of his and Shelly's murder. The mask he wore in the flashback was the mask of tragedy, mirroring how happy they were together. His character in this movie is driven by irony, like how only after death, he realized that nothing is trivial. He tells a joke about the crucifixion of Christ, another man who rose from the dead, but unlike Jesus, he's not here to pardon sins, but to avenge them. "I say I'm dead, and I move." The irony drips from Brandon's performance, the mask only slipping away when around his two remaining friends. The movie is a simple revenge story, but it's the characters that make it what it is, and it's why so many people love it. Brandon Lee in particular is a big reason for that. The story is based on the comic by James O'Barr, which was supposed to serve as an outlet for him after the death of his fiancee at the hands of a drunk driver. Though catharsis never came from it for him, thousands if not millions of people connected with him through his story, and that's worth something at least. Tragedy surrounds this franchise, and Brandon's untimely death will never not hang over this movie, especially given the subject matter. But like Sarah's final lines say, "If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever."

The comic-book series, created by James O' Barr was inspired by a tragedy in his own life. It debuted 35 years agp and picked up quite a following from readers including myself. Although Eric was the main character, others (before and after) would be resurrected by this myth to follow suit. Supernatural, Rock-goth, revenge, suspense drama-thriller is a lot to blend together and it worked. Brandon Lee is surrounded by an incredible cast with his 4th film as leading man and his most iconic ever. The movie is dedicated to him and his fiancee, actress Eliza Hutton. Stunt legend Chad Stahelski in one of his earliest films as Brandon's stunt double in most of the film (so cool). The director Alex Proyas also made Dark City (1998) and I.Robot (2004). Among the top 10 comic to film adaptations of that era. Among the all-time best soundtracks of the 1990s, selling 3.8 million copies. There were 3 sequels:part 2 is an direct one and theatrically released (a director's cut exist). 3 & 4 are standalone and straight to video. A syndicated tv series subtitled 'Stairway to Heaven' (1998-1999) with Mark Dacascos in the title role. Although Brandon Lee passed on, he truly left a impression on the culture. Check out his 2 other films:Showdown In Little Tokyo (1991) and Rapid Fire (1992). You gotta see the work of his father, Bruce. Both legendary and incomparable as well.

Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in "The Dark Knight" (2008) has been compared to Brandon Lee's performance as Eric Draven in "The Crow" (1994) due to several similarities in their acting styles, movements, and speech patterns. Both characters share a dark, intense, and somewhat psychotic demeanor, which has led some to speculate that Ledger might have drawn inspiration from Lee's performance. One of the most notable similarities is the makeup and appearance of the two characters. Both the Joker and Eric Draven feature distinctive face paint, with the Joker's red lips and white face paint mirroring the Crow's black and white makeup. Additionally, both characters wear dark, disheveled clothing, which adds to their overall dark and menacing aesthetic. Furthermore, both Ledger and Lee died tragically before the release of their respective films, which has contributed to the mystique surrounding their performances. Despite these similarities, it is worth noting that Ledger's Joker was also influenced by other sources, including the comic book character's original appearance and the performances of other actors, such as Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice. In conclusion, while there are certainly similarities between Heath Ledger's Joker and Brandon Lee's Crow, it is unclear whether Ledger directly based his performance on Lee's portrayal. However, the similarities between the two characters are undeniable, and both performances have become iconic in their own right.

I first became a bouncer when I was 18 in 1990. One night, many years ago, I had to deal with a drunk guy causing problems and I just could not talk him down. Since I was only 5'10" and 160 lbs he felt the need to try to intimidate me. When it became clear that he was intent on a fight and I couldn't change that, the line from this movie popped into my head so I told him, "Take your best shot. You got me dead bang." That really pissed him off more and he charged at me and he proceeded to get his ass kicked. So that line always cracks me up now.

Fun fact there is a famous cut scene where before Eric goes into the church he is met by a skeletal cowboy figure. He's another wraith like Eric but he never went back to his grave. The scene was cut due to pacing. Also this is one of the first instsnces of using a cgi "deepfake". Apparently, the Skeleton Cowboy was originally a recurring character throughout the film. He would’ve been kind of a guide to Eric and explained what he could and couldn’t do after being resurrected. But this character and his storyline was then completely removed from the film after Brandon Lee’s death

Nice reaction, I wanted to address your question in the beginning regarding that post about "Ledger was inspired by The Crow" You're 100% correct, that is a *false* claim. I don't know who started that rumor but that's not true. The truth of his inspiration for the make up style was based off of Grant Morrison's The Clown at Midnight (Batman #663) to be specific. He read that book prior to making TDK. Ledger's direct inspiration as far as his kind of Joker with the chaos and anarchy was actually influenced by two stories called Batman: The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth from the comics. No doubt The Crow's general setting, tone, aesthetic was inspired from Batman or more specifically Gotham City.

One of the things that got cut, but was touched on in the comments, was the Eric was there to avenge Shelly and his deaths. Anything outside of that would cause his power to fade. Too much and he would be stuck wandering the earth forever. You see the first bit of this when he cleans up Darla. There is a deleted scene (you can find it on youtube) where after she leaves, Funboy attacks Eric with the razor and cuts up his arms, stomach, and back, which is why you see him covered in tape after Funboy dies. Also touched on below, all of the scenes where you don't see Brandon's face, is either Chad or another body double. The face-painting was mentioned as CG, but they also superimposed Brandon's face onto a double's body when he's standing in the window for the make-up reveal. ANother bit of CG, if you look close, when Eric walks into his apartment shivering at the beginning, it's a cut and paste from the alley when the crow leads him to the boots. Finally, the scene where Sarah goes to the apartment to look for Eric was filmed after Brandon had died. It's said that Rochelle Davis (Sarah) made them film it as a condition for her coming back to finish the movie.

They used a real revolver and loaded it with bullets without the gunpowder but they forgot to use used primers. This was to make it look like the revolver had real bullets in it but when they pulled the trigger the primer had just enough power to push the bullet into the barrel making it a suid. Later they used the same revolver for the action scene where they shoot Brandon using normal blanks. But a blank still has much power, and you can guess what happened next.

Sarah does two things for the movie: 1. She needs to get grabbed so that Draven has the motivation to have the final confrontation with the Big Bad even after he finished getting his revenge. 2. She helps establish the people of the neighborhood - her mother and especially Ernie Hudson's character. The fact that he buys her a hot dog and that she is comfortable going to him shows that he is a good cop who really cares about the people of the neighborhood in contrast to his superiors have no real connection to the people they are supposedly protecting; this makes the fact that he would stay with Shelly 30 hours hoping she would make it more believable, and it makes his decision to help Draven up to and including getting shot in the church within his character as well. Speaking of Ernie Hudson, I am disappointed that after he asks Draven if he is a ghost and Draven says, "Boo," Hudson's character didn't say, "I ain't afraid of no ghost." I don't care that it would be out of sync with the tone of the movie as a whole.

Two interesting facts here. The guy in the little car who hit Skank was Henry Rollins. The other one is the guy who directed John Wick, Chad Stahelski, was a stuntman for Brandon Lee in this movie. Since the film was shot mostly backwards the begining of the movie is where we see Chad.

The more interesting trivia about this movie is that it’s based on a comic. The book’s author was in an automobile accident (85% sure it was a DUI), though he lived, his fiancée was also in the car. She did not live. So, especially in the early 90s, movies based on comics felt like they need to “mainstream” the story a bit. But Brandon Lee had purchased the comic, and he carried it with him all the time. It is said that he made a huge nuisance of himself, by constantly suggesting, “Hey, why don’t we do this scene like in the comic?” It is my belief that this is a lot of why the film did well when it came out, but has remained on every Gen-X “Movies any self-respecting person should see.” list. And it’s not like the major plot points… just the ambiance. Always night, always raining, HUGE use of shadow. He would even push for the same camera angles as the panels of the comic. The other big thing was the Soundtrack. NIN, the Cure, My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult. So many great tracks in that album.

The reason Eric loses his powers is because if he deviates from his mission, he becomes powerless. There’s a major character that was cut out, the ‘Skull Cowboy’ who meets him when he rises from the grave. Eric has no memory of anything, so the Skull Cowboy fills him in. When he puts Funboy in the bathtub and helps Sarah’s mom had a part cut out after she leaves. Funboy comes to and starts to slash his back which doesn’t heal for a bit. That’s why the coat looks shredded later. And finally, when Sarah is kidnapped, he goes to enter the church, the Skull Cowboy warns him that by entering, he is mortal since the 4 men he was to exact revenge on are dead. But this character was cut out completely and they had to adjust.

Based on the quality of this reaction I subbed and intend to look over your back content. As for The Crow one of the things I like best about it is the showcase it offers for great character actors of the era, especially in the villain roles- the ultra skeevy Michael Wincott as the raspy voiced main baddie, David Patrick Kelly of The Warriors (78. "WARRIORS!!! CCome out and PLAYAAAY"!!!) In a welcome return, Tony Todd of Candyman fame, Cohen Bros. vet Jon Polito (Barton Fink, Miller's Crossing) as the sweaty pawnbroker/stolen goods fence. Like a who's who of 80s/90s bad guys. Another thing I love about The Crow is that great soundtrack (The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots). I had the CD back in the day, played t f out of it lol.
