The Crow was a graphic novel first. Written by J'O'Barr as a way for him to deal with the loss of his SO. He did not want the movie made originally, but Brandon Lee talked him into it, When Brandon died on set, it nearly destroyed him.

Yup. O'Barr was an orphan, raised in foster care. A drunk driver killed his fiancée Beverly. To cope with the grief, O'Barr joined the US Marines and wrote "The Crow" comic. The revenge story in it was supposed to be his therapy, but it didn't work. He has said "As I drew each page, it made me more self-destructive, if anything... There is pure anger on each page". Can't imagine how he must have felt, after Bandon Lee died too. Three tragic lives (his, Beverly's and Brandon's) intertwined in a weird way.

Brandon Lee's stunt double when he died was Chad Stahelski, thel director of John Wick. This movie was huge. And had a lot of influence in films like Matrix and many others. Wachowski brothers (THE MATRIX) said than when they wrote the matrix Brandon was their first option for the role of Neo. Sadly it could not be. Anecdotaly, Chad Stahelski was too the stunt double for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix. Greetings from Spain

That's my favorite scene in the movie. Which is saying something considering how many amazing scenes there are in this movie. The reason I love that scene so much is because I feel like the horror T-Bird is feeling in that moment is more justice and vengeance for him than his death is. T-Bird really seemed to get off on inflicting fear in Shelley during the attack in the beginning so to have that fear turned on himself, perfect.

The actor who plays Funboy is the one who who accidentally shot Brandon on set. He gave up acting for a while after. That accident really fucked with him. He sadly died of stomach cancer in 2016. Edit: It's also worth noting that there is a song at the end of the soundtrack (the one during the credits) called "It Can't Rain All the Time," but it's not the song we hear a snippet from in the movie. At 24:21, THIS, IS MY FAVORITE MOMENT IN THE FILM. Most don't realize it, but think about it. T-bird read that poetry of Eric's ONCE. A YEAR AGO. Yet he recalls it now, word for word. I have to imagine that during this last year, T-bird kept repeating that poem. In the mirror. He scolf and laugh it off. Other times, he'd repeat it seriously. Go back and watch his performance up until this moment in the film. Of all of them, T-bird KNOWS, they belong in Hell. The others laugh their sins off. Or get drunk. But T-bird. There's this weird quiet to his performance at random moments. Just a look. HE KNOWS. and when he realizes he can't just get out of this, he stops struggling. "Abashed the Devil stood. And saw how awful goodness was." Goodnesses, or Justice? He repeats that poem PERFECTLY, because above all others, HE KNOWS, where he's going. I'd even go so far as to say looking back, he's not so much quiet as resigned. He's bored with the sin because he knows what he's got coming. And finally facing it scares him shitless.

"Can't rain all the time..." I'm not going to talk about the tragic, accidental death of Brandon Lee. It's a complicated matter beyond the scope of this comment. Not wanting to dismiss his death, but I'm sure there are books and videos out there that can explain that tragedy and do it more justice. RIP Brandon Lee. Fun Fact: One of the ravens used in this film, Magic, was used in all of the following movies. Authentic Makeup Effect Fact: Alex Proyas said that Brandon Lee was unhappy with the way his face paint looked when the makeup department applied it to him before shooting. Lee and Proyas then agreed that it would look best if Lee applied his own makeup every night before going to bed so that when he woke up his face paint would naturally look more worn out. Art Through Adversity Fact: Director Alex Proyas originally wanted to shoot the entire movie in "black and white" closer to the comics and only using color in Draven's flash backs scenes with a high contrast theme, but the studio executives didn't allow him to experiment with that approach. This made Proyas shoot much of the movie in a monochromatic color theme mixed with red and dark gray.

I think Brandon Lee would have been an obvious pick for Neo in The Matrix considering the Wachowski sisters’ taste & influences on that trilogy. Medicine is the band performing in the film, and despite having quite the discography, they’re probably the least well-known band on the soundtrack. From what I’ve noticed, most of the time there is a band in a show or film, they are a real band, but usually so obscure the production doesn’t have to really pay them anything-It’s also a way filmmakers can get a band they like or are friends with in their production. Anyway, there are sequels to The Crow, and much like Alien3 & Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles you tend to have a vocal group of people who, (often without really watching them,) trash them and say, “do not watch,” BUT give The Crow: City Of Angels a watch-Even if just on your own. The Crow: City Of Angels has a fantastic soundtrack as well, and the overall aesthetic is different, (going along w/ the change in settings,) also Iggy Pop is in it, alongside Thomas Jane & Thuy Trang.

I was a young man, a comic book geek, and a movie nerd during this time. I guarantee you this movie had buzz in genre fan circles and was being talked about in entertainment news. In short, it had “buzz” during production. We’ll never actually know if it was to be his breakout role because his tragic death (and the fierce discussion about whether to release it) catapulted the film’s presence into public consciousness. It was also an R-rated comic book revenge fantasy, which meant it wasn’t going to get PG-13 box office success. Nonetheless, in retrospect the movie became an instant cult classic, pre-dating a movie with similar attributes: Blade. Again, we can only speculate but it is generally considered a film which would have launched Brandon past the Golan-Globus action movie genre and into Hollywood proper. In other words: A breakout role. On a personal note, I’ll never forget the night I watched the news and heard, for the first time, about his death. That memory is now inextricably linked to the movie’s line: “Childhood is over the moment you know you’re gonna die.” RIP Brandon Lee. RIP Sarah Jones. RIP Halyna Hutchins. Safety for Sarah

This is what a fantasy movie is suppose to be, something that suspends disbelief but conveyed as realistically a way as possible. They even changed the fact that Draven, in the comics, transforms into the crow as opposed to this where the bird is a guide. Ever since having seen The Crow upon its release, it has been one of my most favourite films. Not only because the performances are excellent, but because it’s visually stunning, has possibly one of the best soundtracks; & also because of what Proyas achieved. The Crow was filmed somewhat back to front; with Brandon Lee filming all the scenes of him in make up first. This meant that the scenes of him without the now iconic make up would be some of the last filmed on the production; & sadly the last Lee would’ve ever film. On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Smith & Wesson Model 639 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, to be loaded in the revolver. For close-up scenes that use a revolver, where the bullets are clearly visible from the front, and do not require the gun to actually be fired, dummy cartridges provide a more realistic appearance than blank rounds, which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge, then reinserting the bullets. In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him. O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place. In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, stating, "I don't think you ever get over something like that”. Massee died on 20th October 2016 & right up until he passes away, had never watched the film. Another cast member impacted by Lee’s death was Rochelle Davis who played Sarah. Davis struggled with mental health & substance abuse in the years following the films release; on top of which she spent a period of time homeless. From following her social media, she’s turned her life around & is now making occasional appearances at various conventions. Also, The Cure, who composed the song ‘Burn’ specifically for the film, up until only a few years back refused to play it out of respect. After a great deal of soul-searching, Proyas and the rest of The Crow's cast and crew arrived at the conclusion that Lee would have insisted that they finish the film. With most of the actor's scenes completed, it was up to special effects house Dream Quest to fill in the blanks, which they accomplished in a number of ways. For the scene in which a newly-returned-from-the-grave Eric returns to his old apartment, for example, unused footage of Lee was used, with the actor's image digitally composited into a shot of the apartment set. For a few other key images, however, the effects technicians turned to techniques that were, in 1993, ridiculously cutting edge. Proyas brought in a relatively green stunt performer by the name of Chad Stahelski, who had been good friends with Lee and had a similar build. For a handful of scenes, including the one in which Eric sports his eerie makeup for the first time, approaching his window as lightning briefly illuminates the room, Stahleski stood in for Lee during shooting. Then, Dream Quest used previously captured footage of Lee to digitally graft the actor's face on Stahleski's body. The resulting shots certainly benefit from their brevity and from the darkness in which they were shot, but even today, the effect holds up remarkably well. Stahelski went on to direct the John Wick films & I have no doubt that had Lee not died, he would’ve been cast into the role by his friend.

It's a very demanding and multi-faceted role, but there's not a single moment where he's not convincing. It's over-the-top, but subtle as well. Some scenes aren’t Brandon it’s his body double Chad Stahelski, Chad is the director of the John Wick franchise. The director of The Crow Alex Proyas had too cut and add new scenes for the movie because of happened to Brandon. They also CGI Brandon Lee face on too Chad face and the makeup artist made a face mask of Brandon face for chad to wear. All scenes were they don’t show Brandon Lee face it’s Chad Brandon was supposed get married to his fiancée Eliza Hutton after The Crow finished filming. After Brandon was supposed to get married Brandon was going to a sign a two-year deal to continue The Crow storyline. The Crow is comic book/graphic novel created by James O'Barr. Before entering the Marines, O'Barr's fiancée Beverly had been killed by a drunk driver. While living in Berlin in 1981, O'Barr began work on his comic The Crow as a means of dealing with his personal tragedy. O'Barr was further inspired by a Detroit newspaper account of the murder of a young couple over a $20 engagement ring. In The Crow, the protagonist, Eric and his fiancée Shelly are murdered by a gang of criminals. Eric then returns from the dead guided by a supernatural crow, to hunt their killers. After his discharge from the Marines O'Barr continued his painting and illustration as well as doing various odd jobs. The Crow sat on a shelf for seven years but at last he found a publisher with Gary Reed of Caliber Press. The first miniseries was published in 1989. The Crow has since sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide. Also the crow has the best soundtrack ever the soundtrack has bands like The Cure, nine inch nails. Stone temple pilots, Pantera, Rage Against the machine etc. After Eric rescues and saves Sarah, a character in the comic Skull cowboy appears and tells Eric that he has to stay and live his life in the mortal world because he saved Sarah’s life. Tony Todd the OG Candyman plays the main villain top dollar sidekick

Honestly the best meshing of 80s and 90s. Brandon Lee in a leather trenchcoat using a Katana, in a gunfight, in a boardroom with 90s gangsters with uzis. Just the right level of earnestness and just enough of a wink to the audience for the cheesiness to be fun rather than cringe inducing. It wasn't hallowe'en if you didn't see a couple of guys dressed as The Crow - I did it at 16! The bands were real - Jane Siberry and then My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. The Crow soundtrack and score are both well worth a listen to. - there's even a Rage Against The Machine song which, I kid you not, was heard in the film coming out of a passing car whilst Sarah and Albrecht talked, iirc.

If you guys want more of Brandon Lee then you guys should react to Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) and Rapid FIre.(1992). Trust me you guys will like it and have fun. Both movies are really good and he is just as charismatic in them and you guys will see his martial arts skills, you guys should check them out. The Crow (1994) was gonna be his break out role and I think its one of the best performances of a comic book character. What makes the character unique is that while he is immortal and powerful, he can't ever fully enjoy it or use it for greed because his sadness always haunts him and his time is limited. Brandon portrayed the action stuff with the sadness stuff really good. Eliza was the name of the comic book writer's girlfriend who passed away and was also the name of Brandon's fiance. James O'Barr is that skilled comic book writer and he's now in the comic book history because of this classic.

I have often imagined later on, and when you asked what roles Brandon might have played...he would most likely have been perfect in the matrix as Neo instead of Keanu Reeves....he had the martial arts background and as you said charisma for days....i saw him first in showdown in little tokyo back when i was a kid growing up like 8 years old or something...with Dolph Lundgren. Its a pretty cool movie.. Its such a weird "curse" the Lee family suffered. Bruce died in 1973 just when he was about to break out internationally really...and to think his son would die 20 years later when he was about to really make it big in Hollywood it seemed...cause he is great in The crow...its very similar to how Heath Ledger got huge apraise for his Joker role in The Dark Knight in 2008...the charaacter mannerisms/makeup are very similar imo and im sure Heath got some inspiration from Brandons character

Loving the channel already ! 11:07 "It actually feels a lot like a comic book." Yep, you guessed it, as was pointed out already, this movie is an adaptation of the comic book, borne as a catharsis of the tragedy in the life of author James O'Barr. And the movie is also enveloped in the tragic passing of Brandon Lee during making it. So many talented people created this awesome masterpiece and all this time later their greatness has transcended it all. The soundtrack has A LOT of gems in it. Stone Temple Pilots, The Cure, Rage Against the Machine, among a lot good artists. One last song in there, maybe my favorite, is of course the haunting "It Can't Rain all the Time" by Jane Siberry. Rewatching now, yeah, the whole movie/music story is the epitome of 90's vibe, the good kind of vibe, I used to love watching this movie back in 90's and early 00's, they aired it all the time weekends in KTLA channel 5. Lots of memories, very nostalgic now. Another movie they would rerun often there is Robocop, a wateshed of the 80's, give it a chance for a reaction if you can! Along with Dredd (2012)- other perfect comic book adaptation- those are some of the best action/scifi movies out there. And for a Twilight Zone-like movie, look into Dark City (the director's cut).

James O'Barr came up with the crow after a long time girlfriend he had a serious relationship with passed away after getting killed by a Drunk driver. While the crow has alot of thriller, suspense and action elements at its Core it's a love story. Michael Massee who portrayed Fun boy in The Crow was the person who had shot Brandon with an improperly loaded revolver. After doing this movie he quit acting for a number of years and only did one interview talking about what happened. Massee was severely traumatized by the fact that he fired the Revolver even though he was at no fault for Brandon's death

James O’Barr who wrote “the crow” does not know his birthday because his mom was shitfaced drunk when he was born. He grew up in the Detroit child system. He was at work when he couldn’t drive home and called his girlfriend to pick him up, when she drove over she was hit and killed by a drunk driver. James joined the USMC and drew handbooks about death. When he got back home he planned to kill the drunk driver only to found out he was already dead. He wrote this book out of pain and sorrow. When Brandon (his new best friend) died during shooting James told himself it was his fault. James found forgiveness at Brandon’s gravestone, then went on to have a wife and kids. 🤘🏾🤘🏾

To answer your question about what other roles Brandon Lee would’ve played, had he lived: As much as most people enjoy Keanu Reeves (self included), I’ve often thought that his role as Neo from “The Matrix” would’ve been Lee’s. Also, later, possibly the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels. He was immensely talented, and as a generation older than you two, I most definitely was influenced by his “look” in the film as a kid. His passing was truly tragic, but this movie is a tribute to who he was as an actor and a martial artist legend like his father.

Eric Draven was indeed quoting Poe’s The Raven. I look at it as an in-joke. Every time you see Eric’s “crow,” it’s actually a raven. In fact, almost every time you see a crow depicted/performing in any movie, it is a raven, as it’s very difficult to train crows to perform on cue, but ravens are extremely intelligent and bond with actors quickly.
