I have followed your channel for a few years. While I am a wildlife (small bird) photographer I still learnt so much from you and enjoyed your style of presentation...I also loved anything you did on overlanding. Now that you are including wildlife photography here on the channel it is just awesome and I look forward to seeing more of your work and picking up ideas and tips from you.
I rarely if ever make RU-vid comments but I find Nick’s explanations so good and his work such high quality l felt compelled. He breaks down complex processes into simple steps and explains why he’s doing it. Love it
Looks great Nick! For birds with dark eyes (like puffins) adding a bit of exposure, saturation and noise reduction with a brush can add a nice glossy look to the eyes and make them pop.
I finally have the wildlife setup I've dreamed of since 1972 with my Z9 and the Nikkor Z 800 f/6.3 PF. It feels like cheating. The Topaz suite is my best friend as a wildlife photographer; I use it on almost every photo. I am intimidated by Photoshop, and I got dizzy watching all the stuff you were doing in there. I use PS for very limited and relatively easy things that I can't do as effectively in LRC. A lot of features from PS have been migrating to LRC, and I've been using more of the mask features, which really help. I know I should get over my PSphobia, and when I have more time in my life, I'll work on learning to use it more effectively. Great video though, and I'm glad you're discovering the joys of wildlife photography. I like doing landscapes too, but wildlife is my main bag.
Really amazing, Nick. Thank you so much. Some awesome tips I'd never have thought of. Haven't seen you around much these days. I hope you're doing well.
Nick you're one of the best thank you for showing all of us, how to make our pictures more vibrant. Thank you hope you have a great 2023 Looking forward to more wildlife and landscape pictures.
Being a bird watcher and wildlife photographer, this is right up there at the top! Love that your photos whether it’s landscape or wildlife- Gorgeous!! ❤
I never post comments, but I couldn't pass this up! Please, please, please keep posting more wildlife videos!!! Lots of us are multi-genre photographers, and we really appreciate that in others. Your PS skills blow my mind and make me want to learn more. Thank you for all your effort, and I will definitely try to track down a workshop to go to❤️
This is incredible - thank you so much! This video is so very helpful. Also, I love the way you said at the beginning that you are not a wildlife photographer and then proceeded to blow our socks off with your awesome wildlife images.
Wildlife photography, specifically birds, was my early love in this hobby. I have found that my landscape photography skills, especially editing, really helps with wildlife. I would say that birds, anyway, still look best in golden hour. I've also found that they look best when shot at eye level. So, shooting waterfowl means lying shoreside on my belly. Birds in flight are best from a slightly elevated viewpoint so you don't just have sky in the background. I really look forward to more images and workflow tips from you!
Wow, another home run for me! I learned a lot on landscape from you and now having a landscape artist blend his knowledge to wildlife photography is awesome! Even though I follow great wildlife photographers, you offer a blend of expertise not often seen with them! Keep it coming! 👌
Yes, very useful indeed Nick thanks. I’m going to shoot more wildlife with my new lens and I like editing my fave shots. Saving this vid for future reference
Mixing up photography like this keeps it fresh and more fun! I find myself going between landscapes, wildlife, musicians/people and also drone photos. I love warming up the subject a bit and creating those cool/warm contrasts. Sometimes I'll just paint on some warmth in LR but I'm going to try PS and your selection methods tonight. Thanks for taking us through your process, tremendous help.
This was absolutely amazing and something that was super down to earth and easy to understand. Please do more of this type of content with more wildlife examples! Keep up the good work!
When I was trying to find my style of photography, you were one of the first people who showed me how amazing landscape photography is. I eventually also got into wildlife photography and thought that your take on wildlife would be amazing. To now see your work in wildlife definitely proved what I thought to be correct. Glad you found a love for an amazing style of photography.
Hey Nick, your wildlife photography is absolutely gorgeous! As always you’ve got some seriously mad processing skills😁. I wish you and your loved ones a healthy and Happy New Year! Edit: I almost forgot to say, your videos are always very helpful, thank you!
Nick, I have been following your landscape photography for years, and have loved learning about landscapes from you - and now you’re expanding to wildlife, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. This was a wonderfully helpful video, and I appreciate it (and you)!!
Unbelievable the technic and results you already have after so little experience. Nice man! I mentioned that your 500/4.0 from 1999, becomes a RF 600/4.0 in the metadata of your images. Lol…
It’s fun to see the sparkle in your eyes talking about your photography journey again. It’s fun to mix it up what you shoot makes you see things in a new way
Nick, just to add, I am very grateful that you take the time to do videos for us especially the editing ones. I first learned about Photoshop masks from watching one of your videos, where black conceals and white reveals. Thank you!!!
Nice! Well done dude! Been doing this for a bit and it’s nice to see you make the jump to wildlife… since you’ve made this photo pop so nicely , I gotta say the skills you learned over the years for landscape hugely payed off! So so sweet how great this looks man. Wow! Honestly, so well done!
Glad to see you doing wildlife photography! Stunning photos of the eagle. I do the same thing, combine landscape and wildlife (bird) photography. Keeps me busy the entire day. I've got the Sony 200-600, not as fast as your prime, but very sharp and fun to use. Denoising/sharpening software saves a lot of my photos taken with the (not BIF optimal) A7R III. Thank you for sharing this, very informative. You sure know how to use PS. Keep up the good work, Nick! 📸👍
Thank you Nick for this video! It really gives me new ideas and approaches to edit my wildlife photography. Again, thank you for your work and the great videos you produce!!!
I was looking forward to this video. I love your take on dual processing for wildlife and birds. This past year I too have become obsessed with birds. Learning a new skill has help with my landscape work. Love your work and thanks a bunch.
Hey Nick, you've just confirmed my long held belief that a decent photographer can pretty much photograph any genre, landscape, wildlife, etc, etc. I actually think that having a varied skill set as a photographer can stop us getting into the doldrums and many of the skills are transferable! Loving your wildlife images you put up, superb work! Cheers from the UK. Ace editing as always!
walks out to his backyard and just KILLS the coyote images, damn! like they say in Little Drummer Boy, a "king of kings" ... your insights go above, and beyond
After two years of using Lightroom I feel very comfortable and confident using it for my bird photography. That being said... your Photoshop workflow is certainly giving me inspiration for how to yet again, take my hobby to the next level! So happy to see you shooting birds! I've always liked your night sky work and now that I live in a more rural setting I can't wait to revisit your videos this summer but honestly PLEASE make more bird photography / editing videos! This one was easily one of the best I've ever seen on YT.
Thank you very much for these videos about editing.... I learn a lot with the techniques you show and with the advice to improve the final result! I wish you an excellent year 2023!
Nick, Just amazing video. You are a master at what you do, and your presentation makes it easy to comprehend. Thanks, I always look forward to your videos.
Great sharp shots. I had the 600mm Canon EF lens years ago. But, I didn't do that much wildlife photography. So, it just wasn't worth keeping that lens. And, yes, it is a beast to carry. Glad you found a new interest in photography.
Thanks--good comments and you have some great shots there (although I use a DxO/Topaz workflow, so noise is no longer an issue). Also, when people ask me about gear, I recommend a Micro Four Thirds system for virtually any genre, but particularly for wildlife/landscape use. My Lumix G9 with battery grip and Leica 100-400 (200-800mm EFL due to the 2X crop factor) together weigh about 2kg/4.4 lb and that lens is 17cm/6.75" long and 82mm/3.25" wide. It's tack-sharp (although that's not hugely important for most images, it's of course desirable for many wildlife shots) and has a minimum focusing distance of 1.3m/4.27' for an effective magnification of 0.5x, enabling "semi-macros" from a "safe" distance (let's not forget about very small wildlife)! Oh, and with 6.5 stops of dual IS, no tripod's needed, as it's very easy to hand-hold while waiting for the right moment (plus 20 fps "pre-burst" enables you to capture the decisive moment even after the fact). BtW, I'm also a drummer and Rogue is one of my "desert island" breweries.
Forgot to comment after I watched this a couple weeks ago. Always a pleasure watching how you navigate your images in post. Really amazing photos! Hopefully you continue to pursue wildlife shooting because both wildlife and landscape photography compliment each other so well, connecting us more deeply to the natural beauty on display.
thank you Nick for yet another great video. Next level image processing..! All the best to you for the New Year and can't wait to see more of your wildlife photography.. hopefully you will "vlog" one of your excursions and take us with you.!?
Amazing! I mostly shoot wildlife but have been following you for a while and it’s great to get the perspective of a landscape photographer into wildlife work. Shooting more wildlife environmental shots is something I want to do more and I hope you will release more videos like this. Fun fact, I was rewatching the F4 roadtrip coming back from my last wildlife shooting in Indonesia 😊
Fantastic tutorial. I have followed some of your great landscape photography adventures and now adding wildlife to your repertoire is truly awesome. Wish you continued success in your photographic journey.
