Brought back lots of childhood memories when I lived there in the 60’s. Loved your video as always.😊❤

I wondered why the railroad is no longer there.

Hi Su, strangely I did kind of wonder that myself when I was walking, mainly prompted by the big station you see in this video towards the end. That station was rather large but the nearby village had about ten houses and a couple of farms, no way could it viably justify such a station. However, as you will see in the next video, along that coast line they were mining Alum, which is used mainly in the textile industry for dying. So the Alum was being transported on that railway line mainly to Whitby for shipping onward to London and the rest of the world. Eventually, synthetic Alum was invented and mining became uneconomical. As it happens that station at Kettleness was serving one of the last mines to close, so I guess it was preserved for longer as a working station.

I always think that when you reach Saltburn it’s such a lift and also the start of a distinctly different feel to the walk. There’s just so much variety on this walk, truly something for everyone. Glad you seemed to be enjoying it as much as I do.

So true Stu, it really is a game of two distinctive (fantastic) halves. After what you told me I was pretty sure I would enjoy it, but was truly blown away (!) how awesome a trail it actually is! Cheers

Great video and an interesting area …very brave to be out on multi days during Winter but it’s a good start to your hiking season 👍👍

Totally agree, although have to admit, I did have some trepidation in my mind but that helped to make sure I tried to plan for eventuality. Thanks for watching and I do appreciate the comment.

Nigel, This evoked a few more memories of when I did the Way, mostly good, a couple not-so-good, but all part of the experience. From memory there were some interesting sections not covered in your video on day 3 (no doubt, partially due to keeping cameras out of the rain). I would have liked your disused railway diversion, but I stuck to the official route (having randomly arrived at Runswick Bay when the tide was low) and experienced heavy fog along this coastal section so I didn't see much of the ocean views anyway. I hope being close to civilisation for that wild camp wasn't too noisy and bright. I am looking forward to virtually walking the Robin Hood's Bay to Filey section with you in part 3.

Ryk, glad the video helped the replay button and as you say, you need the not so good to appreciate the so good. Your absolutely right I had camera issues from the damp and some of the views were simple not there in the mist and rain. It's really strange but all the people I have spoken to did not suffer from the high tide at Runswick Bay so I do wonder if it's more of a problem in the winter. However, discovering that track was a gift which I repeated used later on to a great advantage, which you will see in the next video. Yep, slept like a log on the wild camp and in fact with the walking I usually find all the nights are great except for the first night, and that 's regardless what type of accommodation I use. Looking forward to your virtually companionship on the next section. Cheers, Nigel
