Not sure if anyone else has already said this, but the whole "if you REALLY want to be sustainable you should just shave your head" thing just seems counter-productive to me (I'm not referring to anyone who is genuinely asking if that's the most sustainable option). I take issue with the idea of people policing others' bodies to begin with, but doing so in the name of "the greater good" is just bad activism. We want to persuade more people to take an interest in sustainability, not gripe at the people who are already doing their best.
When the shampoo bar gets too little or divided in several pieces, I put it in a little pocket made of thin fabric (such as those containing jewelry for exemple) ! It works really well ☺️
Camille V oh must gosh. One shampoo bar I bought came in a lil fabric pocket and I thought it was kinda unnecessary but now I realise it has a use! Thank you.
"if you want to live sustainably you have to shave your head, never use hot water of heat your home, only wear undiyed clothes".... like wtf we are allowed confort and pleasure too, you don't have to justifie yourself for having long hair... (sorry that last part got me worked up xD)
Yeah I was like WTF?! I guess while we're at it, we might as well not own any objects ever, and just medidate all day to try and connect with our inner selves smh.
Also, not hair related, but I know you had mentioned before you were living on a budget, and as a student in college I have noticed it is EXTREMELY hard to stay in my budget while being sustainable, clean, and eating vegan. Like most cheap things are wrapped in plastic or made with workshop labor. Do you have any tips for that? Thank you for posting! We love you ☺️❤️
Africa Cordova dry beans and rice are readily available at most grocers in the bulk section and are super cheap/a great base for a lot of things. Also, check out a few grocers in your area to see if there’s a store with unpackaged produce at a fair price. If you have an aldi, the vegan chicken patties are boxed plastic free and are super tasty and less expensive than other stores. Also, choosing canned over plastic wrapped can keep your waste down while still making things cost effective. Also, check for different free pages on Facebook or browse Craigslist/LetGo for things people are trying to give away or sell for cheap.
I have definitely been there. Honestly, you just have to do the best you can in your situation. When i had only $10/week to spend on groceries, toiletries, and anything else i might have needed, the only place I could afford to shop was Dollar Tree, and i basically lived off of spaghetti and bisquick pancakes. The only store that offered bulk shopping at the time was a small section of kroger, but i couldnt afford to buy any of the stuff there. In my situation, i remained vegan, but i had no way of being low/zero waste or organic. Now that i am out of that situation and can buy the groceries i want, i have a hard time finding plastic free foods that are also organic. It's so frustrating that the non-organic foods are loose, but the organics are always wrapped in stupid plastic!
There's a great facebook group for living low waste for students! I think it's called Zero-Waste Student Living, there are great resources and forum style question and recommendation posts that I love
Ahhh 💛That's the best phrase I've ever heard! omg I'm so going to call it that from now on! (p.s. They say great minds think alike and now I'm also wondering if all Kristie/Christie's think alike ;) 💛 hehe only kind of kidding but hello name friend! I've never met another Christie/Kristie so I'm having a moment haha 💛💛💛)
Sedona Christina , tee hee! How is the toilet paper roll smooshing going? (I had mentioned it a while back to get your roommates to use less TP)? I also really appreciate you owning your mistake from your previous video. Makes you very relatable and like a real human. We all “oops” from time to time :) keep up the good work. Love your videos!
Christy you changed my hair game! About two years ago I switched to a shampoo bar after watching your video and I am NEVER going back!! My hair is so healthy and I would never have tried a bar if it wasn’t for you. Thank you!
pro tip from a soap maker: if it's not oil based, it's a detergent bar. That's why they tend to crumble and can be more drying. oil based = soap chem based = detergent
But also don't forget oil based aka soap has an incredibly high pH and is damaging to the scalp and hair shafts long term if you don't use an ACV rinse. Hair and our scalp is 4.5-6pH and detergents are around that or a 7 Max while soap is 8.5-12pH.
People shouldn’t tell you anything about how you choose to wear your hair, as indigenous that question triggered me 🦁 thank you so much for this video!!!
Actually have been using Ethique's shampoo and conditioner for the past couple months and honestly they work super well for me; I was having a hard time with my past shampoo bars and saw a video from Shelbizleee where she reviewed shampoo bars and Ethique's were in her top ones
I appreciate that you answer questions as a gentle, open conversation. And that there are no "correct" answers for a lot of things, and it's all really complex. It's very refreshing!
The long hair question is so funny to me because even before I explored a low waste lifestyle I always grew my hair out long enough to donate it because it felt wasteful (both physical waste and financial waste) to get it cut all the time to maintain a shorter hairstyle.
Shaving my head actually didn’t reduce my need for products, since washing your hair is mainly about scalp care. I actually wash my hair more with short hair because there’s less of it to absorb oils.
@@hand_rod that's what I thought and remembered too about about having short (or none) hair. My hair was cut superduper short about 4 years ago, and I was so annoyed about having to wash it every 2 to 3 days, because you just can't cover it. And with long hair:just stuff it in a bun and live peacefully in greasy hair for a week😄
The Ethique shampoo and conditioner bars are literally the best ever. I will never go back to liquid hair products because they are that good. Definitely recommend!!
I use shampoo bars that don’t work well for my hair as a general soap bar and also as shaving cream bar. It’s only happened twice in around 5 years of shampoo bar use-age fortunately. Most I’ve tried work well enough that it’s not a problem to continue to using them on my head.
I’ve been using the lush shampoo bars for the last 2 years and love them! At the end I’ll use the crumbles for body washing or put them in an old squeezy shampoo bottle and add water and use it as a body wash.
PSA to anyone getting on a plane with a safety razor you'll have to leave the blades at home and they'll inspect ur bag. Just take the razor out before and show it to them saying you didn't bring the blades 🤙 I learned this from experience 😬
@@hotjanuary luckily I was only taking mine to give it to a friend so I didn't need blades. I think you'd have to order/buy a few when you arrive at your destination. 😬
This is very hit or miss depending on the person that you inspects it. I've seen lots of people say they let them through with the blade in the razor, they just couldn't have extra with them.
As for the soaps and shampoo bars and conditioners, I just stack the little bits of each until I have enough and melt and mold them back into one merged conditioner or shampoo bar. I used a cup to mold them in a circular shape and put it back to use.
for anyone curious about Ethique, I have long semi straight frizzy hair. I get an oily but often itchy scalp and dry ends. I liked St Clements (oily hair) but overtime it stopped working great for me, same with Mintasy (dry damaged hair) but I used them in combo until I finished both and it worked better. Now I use Pinkalicious (normal hair) and I honestly think it's the best bar! I know so many people with various hair types who use and love it. I also use Wonderbar for a conditioner, I found Guardian too heavy and not great to work with. I now just use it as a shave bar so it's not wasted!
I literally just got my first shampoo and conditioner bars! I got the HiBar moisturize ones off of earth hero and next wash is when I’m finally going to try them! Fingers crossed that they work for me😁
I loooove their shampoo! Haven’t tried their conditioner bar, but the shampoo works great (I have oily hair so I struggled a lot in the past with shampoo)
I live in the chagrin valley (lol chagrin falls to be exact) and it’s pronounced like how goggle pronounces it when you google it! But the town isn’t named after sadness 😅. The native Americans that originally lived here named the river shagrin, when meant clear water in their language, and at some point the white settlers decided to make it chagrin. Haha I don’t really know if you care about that, but I thought I’d share it. I live 15 minutes away from where they make the soap. I really want to try it but haven’t found a place in Cleveland that’s not downtown that has enough of a selection and I don’t want to pay shipping bc that’s just silly. Chagrin has a farmer’s market and I wished they went. Honestly I need to contact them to ask if they have a store in the warehouse where it’s made. 2 years ago I bought the lush shampoo/condition bar and at the time I was swimming and it wasn’t effective enough at dealing with that. But I just retired this past spring and have been loving the shampoo. The conditioner bar unfortunately still does nothing for me. Edit: ok I actually decided to do some research read more about them, and they have a whole bunch of vegan shampoo bars www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/help-me-choose/vegan-skin-care/#secVegan+Shampoo+Bars
@@jennabaldesare9027 I saw they just started that again! The Whole Foods in Orange also just created a large display for their products, but they charge more then getting straight from them. Thank you!!!
You get quite a lot of interesting questions. Not sure how else to describe them. But it's awesome you took the time to answer every single commonly asked question
I use my unwanted shampoo & conditioner bars as shave bars. I got some bars that didn't work on my dyed hair so now I use them to shave instead of buying special shaving stuff. Works just the same!
"Matador Flatpak" soap bar case changed the traveling (usually backpacking) game for me!! I have one for my hair bar and one for castile bar for body, dishes, and laundry! It really is magical the way they engineered the fabric to allow your bar to dry but in the bag. It is some kind of plastic but they've saved so many travel bottles for me and seem like they'll last a lifetime!
I’m now binge watching your channel and I’m amazed I didn’t find you sooner! I really really love your perspective because it makes me feel like I’m watching myself except you know what your doing! This is everything myself and my family is pushing to be! Zero-waste, encouraging change in the system and now an honest take on soap bars (which I’ve struggled the most with)!
So here's my problem, and maybe others can relate. I have hard water where I live (really hard), and I don't have to ability to put a water softener in :( because of that, shampoo bars (and super clean, natural shampoos in general) won't suds up, won't properly clean, and won't properly rinse out. It's so sad because I was so excited to used them too! And I know this is the case because when I have used them when I've travelled, they worked perfectly. Anyways, just thought I'd share that because I wasn't aware that hard water could even be a problem when I first started trying bars out and it took a while to figure out what was going on...
When I had hard water, I found a shower head filter and it worked so well for me! Eventually there was a lot of build up, so if I hadn’t moved I would have bought another one.
This!! Hard water sucks! I had hard water when I first started using a shampoo bar and could not figure out what was going on. The only thing that saved me was using an apple cider vinegar rinse as the last step in my shower routine. With the ACV rinse I was able to keep using a shampoo bar and conditioner bar (though it was a bit of an adjustment). You might want to try it out if you haven’t already but still really want to use bars:)
keller232323 I’ve wanted to get into using ACV more but does it make everything smell like feet?! Haha that’s why I haven’t used it except for calming my tummy
Andrea Bellato lol! ACV definitely does smell weird😂 when I used it, the ACV as a was, I diluted some. It smelled a bit like vinegar when I first got out of the shower but the smell went away completely after my hair dried. It even helped clear up the scalp issues I had from the hard water! I made the rinse with 1 part ACV to 3 parts distilled water. You can probably change the amounts if it’s too strong for you☺️
keller232323 awesome, thank you so much for the advice! You’re right, diluting it will definitely help. I want to try it for a face toner too. I love how magical natural products can be but I still want my boyfriend to want to kiss me 😂
I use the little “nubs” of shampoo bars to wash makeup brushes, and if I have a bar I don’t like (I’m still trying to find the right bar) I use it for shaving my legs
WHERE TO GET SHAMPOO BARS: at like Walmart, marshalls, ross, t.j. maxx, or target most shampoo bars are $5 they work pretty good and usually come in packs
Whenever I have a bar I don’t end up liking I cut it into thirds or fourths and then I’ll give those smaller bars to my family and friends so they can all have a sample to try different brands. My hope is that eventually they will find one they really like and it will convert them 😂 my one friend is open to is now!
I love ethique stuff, mainly because it is made here in New Zealand! I have very similar hair to yours Christina, and the Too Delicious conditioner is honestly a god send!
I love your videos !! but i have used morrocan method shampoo bar and conditioner. My blonde hair was anything but happy about this .... huge knots and tangles and the conditioner couldn't get it fixed. I had to use half a bottle of regular conditioner for this😭
I started using a shampoo bar thanks to you! One thing I've noticed, because I've got really oily, dandruff-prone, hair fall prone hair, is that solid shampoos are usually a healthier option for my hair at least.
She mentioned something about it in a past video, not sure which one, but she recommended not using it since the ingredients themselves are not excellent, even if it is in a tin! She swapped to Elate for now. Personally I haven’t found another brand better than Elate in terms of ethics, low waste AND clean/vegan ingredients.
So I have a way for how to use shampoo bars that you end up not liking. I've found that most shampoo bars get really foamy to help wash your hair better. They tend to work really well as shave soap. Give it a try!
I don't use more shampoo with long hair because my scalp stays the same size lol. I think it's a common misconception that more shampoo is needed for more hair because it's actually unnecessary to saturate all of your hair with shampoo. Just gently work it into the scalp & rinse. The only thing I may use more of is conditioner, but I only wash my hair once a week at the most. I really don't think most people with long hair use excessively more product, if much more at all.
Bar shampoo and conditioner was my first low waste swap and I can't go back. They are amazing! I use Unwrapped Life that is Canadian and sold at my local refillery sans packaging! So triple score in my books. I use the ones that were "okay" as shave bars until I found the two bars that worked best for me, the kids detangler conditioner bar (read fine tangle prone hair) and the balancing shampoo bar. I now have 4 bars in my shower, shampoo, conditioner, body/shave bar, and a face bar (for my acne prone skin from Beauty Counter). Everything takes up less room on one tiny shelf and now I have room to put my foot up when shaving and not knock over bottles - WIN!
hey christie, thank you for this video !. I just wanted to tell you (or anyone reading this) that I truly believe that it is super important and healthy to find ourselves beautiful - no matter in what way (with or without hair); and that only with a healthy mind and kind attitude towards our bodies and life, we can continue to develop and think about living sustainably and creative for our environment. sending lots of love - kat.
The thing with long hair... I've had short hair for 2 to 3 years and what I hated the most about it, how often I needed to wash it. With long hair, you can just stuff it up in a bun and go around for days with out washing it.. Whilst short hair, you can't cover the greasy-ness (i hope that's a word cause I'm german and in lack of another real english word :D) Soo for that I reason I would say long hair is more sustainable🤔
I know this isn’t a crate training video lol but just about the 2 seconds you mentioned it, it’s like been the best thing I’ve ever done for my dogs. They love their crates and put themselves in them lol
A good chunk of the chagrin soaps are vegan. They'll say if they are or aren't. Been getting their soap for over a year now and I love it. I get all my hair, body, and face soaps from them. They have smaller sizes to "try out" too. All different skin and hair types.
Lately I've been sticking with HiBar's moisturize duo but in the past I've really like the ayurvedic bar from Chagrin Valley. The latter is vegan and has tons of oils. Double checked and it looks like only two of the shampoo bars aren't vegan (the Honey Beer & Egg and the Carrot Milk & Honey).
Hair: But make it zero waste, haha Going zero waste doesn't mean giving up the things you love or the things that make you, you! Especially not when there are so many bar options :D I never get tired of these vids, thank you for sharing your tips!!
can you make/ have you made a video on things you can do to help with the regrowth of hair after eating disorder recovery? I'm going through that right now and its killing my confidence. I used to have quadruple the hair that I have now years after recovery
In my culture we have long hair. Male and female alike. I was taught that we sacrifice our hair as a mourning type of mechanism when someone close to us transitions to after life. Love your long hair! It’s beautiful 💛 when I was shampoo bar hunting I noticed a lot of lint buildup. Seems to have lightened up. But I never found out what was causing it. My brush was so linty and it was so frustrating. Do you know what it could have been?
Very cool video. The only thing I want to bring up is that Ethique may be awesome, but it is being imported from New Zealand, so if you want a more sustainable bar of shampoo/conditioner look for a company who makes them in your country because it is better for the environment.
About shaving your head to be more sustainable: as a person who really did shave her head (not for sustainability though) i can personally state the following: the shorter your hair is , the more often you have to wash it! Because you can't just comb it on the third day and be +- good, you can't make a pony tail, you literally have to choose: wash your head or stay at home. So in terms of using less shampoo and conditioners maybe long hair might be more sustainable :)
I have a small repurposed mesh/lace drawstring bag about the size of my palm that I keep all the bits of shampoo bars in and it works wonderfully. I tend to get a lot of samples so this is great, plus hanging it in the shower keeps them dry! My go to is the Lush Jason and the Argan Oil (I think) so that's where I store mine, I only use the metal tin for travel.
I stopped using conditioner over a year ago and use ACV about every other week instead which was such a great switch for me. I just got my shampoo bars in today and can’t wait to use it, got a sampler pack of 15 from Apple Valley for $20 (full bars $8 plus shipping) and while I don’t know how much will be used up as shampoo that much soap will last me ages of “regular” use. I’ve always used bar soap in the bathroom so once I figure out which bar will work best for me I will probably just use it for both purposes.
I have recently bought my first solid conditioner. It costed me a bit over 5 £. It's so soft and smells like roses, and, to be frank, two or three times I even used it as a soap on my face and I like it. :-))) So, yeah, anything that looks like a soap can be used like a soap. :-))
I tried washing my hair with water for a while but after 10 months I missed shampoo. I saw one of your videos about shampoo bars and I gave them a try. It's great. Now I use it once a month and the other times I wash my hair with water. Your hair is beautiful! Also I'm using your idea to keep a nice fringe!
This is so helpful and gives me hope! I live off the grid and it’s been interesting being so attached to my wasteful shampoo and conditioner. But the fact that you love your bars more than the products you used to be obsessed with gives me the push to just go for it! As soon as I finish what I have I’ll start trying new products! Thank you for breaking everything down, such a helpful video!!! ✨🌿
So interesting to see a dry skinned person with such different experiences. Oil based, ‘true’ soap doesn’t agree with my skin at all, far too alkali and drying for my dry skin. My shampoo bar happens to be an oil based bar that’s ok though a bit alkali in a way that tangle my hair so I may try a syndet when I run out.
It's super hard to find anyone. Minimalist Beauty is a blogger with 4a hair. Lots of great hair related posts among other things (she isn't on YT though). The Kind Journey also has a ZW hair care video. I personally just do shampoo bars and diy shea butter and/or oil mixes as of late.
about your camera monitor problem: depending on the camera you're using, there is software where you can see exactly what you're filming when you connect your camera to your laptop :) I think Canon has that, I'm not sure though
i used shampoo bars for a little under a year until i used up one before i moved. my bf has bottles of 3 in 1 from military training so we’re using those until they are gone, and i can’t wait bc i miss my bars so much lol
I found a shampoo bar at a Marshall's/TJ Maxx for less than $10 and it's organic, so good to look at discount places like that. I can relate to losing hair; I lost all the hair on my body when I had chemo for breast cancer. It didn't bother me the way it does others, but still, it was quite an experience. My hair is longer again, due to not being able to go to a hair salon, but I really need it cut and styled soon!
Hi, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk about sulfates during a hair care video or not. If I’m not mistaken when you refer to the “gritty” bars those are the ones with either SLS or SCS. I was so excited to try the JR Liggetts you’ve recommended and, like most other oil based bars left sooooo much residue that took multiple washes with my Lush bar to get rid of it. I think my issue is mainly with my water as even an ACV rinse doesn’t seem to help. Unfortunately, Lush bars are heavy in SLS which I avoid because my scalp does burn a little after using but nothing has ever worked better to clean my hair! Although I would still like to avoid it, I’m about to try some bars with SCS as a happy medium between being natural and getting a good clean. It’s hard to find any unbiased explanations as to whether SCS is much safer or not. Do you typically avoid bars that have any kind of sulfates in them?
So now that you know that bar none does not contain palm oil, which one is your favorite bar conditioner between the morocco method, Hibar and Bar none? I have very dry thick hair!
i've noticed that the gritty-type shampoo bars last significantly longer for me than the oil-based ones, but that's just me! for some reason i find i have a tendency to use more product when using an oil-based bar. my favorite (currently) is the angel hair bar from lush. all just my personal preference. (:
Girlfriend, totally no reason to call yourself an idiot!! You made a normal human error, that doesn’t reflect on who you are as a human being in total! I think you’re wonderful, but sometimes it pains me to see you be so self-deprecating, and how we talk about ourselves impacts how others think they should feel about themselves too. Anyway, not telling you this to make you feel bad, literally just want you to feel encouraged to just be confident to be your awesome self, no apologies or regrets!! ❤️ I’ve also heard Shelbizleee (never know how to spell it, you know who I’m talking about 😂) mention that to cleanse long hair, you still only really need to wash your scalp, so the length of your hair doesn’t make much difference, least as far as shampoo bars go. And I don’t think having short hair or no hair makes you more or less perfect in terms os sustainability, because just being on this planet were going to leave some footprint somehow, and that’s ok! I don’t think anyone’s expecting us to disappear, be less a human, or less of who we are!
Sedona, hello! I love your channel. That's why i want to make you this question. I hope you see it: what's your opinion about Bella Thorne's skincare routine with all natural products? Thank you so much
I have 3 options for bars you don't like. 1.Grind it up in a food processor or grate on a cheese grater, mix with a box of washing soda powder and its laundry soap. 2. to melt down pieces with hot water and pour in a spray bottle for a ecofriendly cleaner. 3. If you like how they smell, put them in your drawers or car. Christina I would be so honored if you looked at my channel and natural colorant soaps I make.💚🌎
i love all ur haircare stuff... ik it doesnt suit me, but I still love to watch... I have crazy irish hair and use glycerin based soap on my hair now, and i make it myself😊
Your hair is the reason I'm watching this video. This is the second video of yours I've seen. I'm glad you haven't cut it short. It's super pretty. I want to know what you use because my hair looks so similar to yours. If we were side by side, people might ask us if we were sisters or twins... And your lack of ability to remember vocabulary words in a timely manner makes me laugh, because I'm exactly the same way. Hugs!
I thought I’d give those bars a try their not bad really. My hair is heavier but I actually like that cause my hair is thick and goes frizzy with normal shampoo. I do however find it hard to comb my hair. I’ll try the toothpaste tablets next 😘
I had bought the hers shower caddy you had and sadly it is too in almost too short for me. I'm going to have to buy the shower caddy that you have for my work
P-l-e-a-s-e name your current favorite shampoo bar or bars! And even more importantly, which one dried out your hair? My hair & scalp are super dry already!
Have you tried the moon valley products? I believe they're made in the seattle area because i live around there too and ive found it in local grocery stores. Their moisturizing shampoo bar is awesome!
If you ever try Viori Shampoo and Conditioner bars, will you do a video review? I am super interested, but would like to see more information about it.
Short hair takes more maintenance anyway! Since you only wash your scalp everyone should be using about the same amount of shampoo. I have really long hair too and don’t feel like it makes a an affect on my sustainability goals.
