In the seventies, the native mynah were still around.Yes you are right the Javan mynah won the turf war. But in those days, the Javan was preferred over the native type as pet for boys in the sixties, seventies. We keep them from young and they identify us as their parents and will recognise our whistling and flew to us their owners. Those were wonderful days being a child, life was simple, fun . Though lack of material comfort, but people were happier. I missed those time.

my indonesian friends tell me that in Java itself the Javan myna is actually quite rare in the wild now, having their numbers be decimated by hunting to sell as pets or songbirds. nowadays if you find one they often fetch a high price, ard RP65k (SGD7 ish) on the lowest end, and as high as RP1.1mil (ard SGD100) for rarer breeds and colours, with most good ones going around RP250k (ard SGD 20) depending on size and location. the unemployed often catch them to make an easy buck
@LittleRedJungle
@LittleRedJungle Год назад
yeah I head it's the opposite in Indonesia i think! The Common Mynas really overtaking the land out there :( but dang $100 for what we take for granted here in Singapore! :O Really hope people don't harm the Javans we have here just for their own personal gain tho :(

If the Javan Mynahs are thriving and flourishing successfully in Singapore, even though declining in Native Indonesia, then why are they listed as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN? 🤔

My biggest theory is that Javan myna birds when introduced to Malaysia Singapore and Southern Thailand for the very first time they would have actually displaced a lot of the native birds that would have lived in these parts of Southeast Asia. In my opinion these birds would have been escapes from pet cages and that would have been a deliberate sign from the pet trade industry. Also if you notice about the common myna birds declining in population anywhere else around Malaysia and Singapore, this is why. Nevertheless, commom mynas have actually been very much an introduced, yet actually became rather invasive species in places like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji, new Caledonia and also Florida in the USA etc. Honourable mentions include Turkey, Israel, the Middle East and even more so recently Cyprus. Common myna birds are also known as Indian myna birds. Plus another species that you've actually forgotten to put up in a list is the great myna bird. It's another black and white bird very similar to other myna species but apparently it also has a very impressive head tuft on the front of its head giving the impression of a mohawk. I actually hollered it out for you because I actually noticed that when I actually went to Malaysia with my family and such I actually remember seeing these birds normally in pairs yet small to large flocks still exist.
@davidlaw9686
@davidlaw9686 Год назад
There was no mynahs until the fifties. They flourished after that. The black species came subsequently in the sixties. They could have been brought in owing to the idea that this type could learn to talk. Then came the crows later.
@LittleRedJungle

@@LittleRedJungle in my young days always love to watch birds and insects in bushes, like damsel flies in variety of colours. Had never seen mynahs, only plenty of sparrows and swallows. @@davidlaw9686 yeah I’ve noticed that growing up too! Was trying to research up on it, but seems like there’s no confirmed reason for it. 😭 Some suggest feather moulting and others suggest disease! Don’t know if it’s what’s affecting its reducing numbers tho :(

It's funny, but in my Central Asian country your native common myna (with yellow patches around eyes) is a parasite 😂 They are so aggressive, attacked even me for many years because their nest was between my and neighbour's storey (unreachable). Also they group in the evenings on the trees (hundreds!) and make loud awful noises. Btw, sometimes a bunches of loud women sitting near house entrances are called "maynas" here for the same reasons 🤣
@LittleRedJungle
@LittleRedJungle Год назад
Aww which country are you from? But yes I’ve heard of this reversal of roles! Which make it all so interesting! Also, haha ok that factoid about loud women is so funny 😂
@-Mitra-
@-Mitra- Год назад
@@LittleRedJungle I'm from Tajikistan 😊 Unfortunately the problem with myna isn't realized by our government yet as it was in the neighboring Uzbekistan, for example. I'm really worried because all day long one mostly hears those mynas' aggressive sounds - territory battling with other birds. Our non-predator birds are pretty peaceful and don't have fighting skills, that's why myna takes over their habitat 🥺 Also the number of sparrows falls down each year, because they are mostly under myna attack. Yeah, the thing with women is really funny because their loud chit chat sounds closely to myna 🤣

@@LittleRedJungle Exactly! New arrivals are meant to integrate. More often than not, New arrivals are replacements.
