Hey guys, this one is a very different style but I am so excited to show you *HOW* deep-sea science gets done!! If you feel like supporting my work, you can do so on Patreon here: www.patreon.com/naturalworldfacts 🦑🦈🐠 I’ve already posted some sneak peaks at scenes from my upcoming Midnight Zone film!! I’ll post bonus deep-sea content, early (and ad-free) access to my films and more :) even just watching means the world, thank you so much for tuning in!!
I won’t lie I’ve been struggling to have motivation to keep my grades up in college and forget why I’m going through all this but whenever I see one of your videos my spark is reignited, thank you
i wholeheartedly believe that you’ll be noticed & picked up by major documentary channels if you keep this up, although your voice is ofc different the whole vibe of the way you talk and narrate these videos is so much like david attenborough i truly can’t see how they wouldn’t try to recruit you. this video is insanely good
You’ve no idea how happy this comment made me! Thank you, so so so much. Since I was tiny, watching Attenborough on tv, my dream has been to do what he does and work on professional docos. To this day my dream job is to work on wildlife films for the BBC or Netflix, though I’ve no idea how to get there. Anyway - this made my day. 🥰
@@NaturalWorldFactsHow to get there? Ask. Connect. Send physical letters to institutes and people in positions that you want to hold and ask them for advice. Sometimes you can say that you know the person you're talking to isn't who you need to talk to to find out what you want to know, but you're hoping they might know someone that you can talk to through them to get to what you want to know and where you want to be. Maybe you can't talk to Attenborough but can you talk to Attenborough's foundation's secretary? You have a great advantage in that you already have a portfolio of fine work that you've done. An educational channel approaching a million subscribers is amazing! Find out how presenters find agents and get one. Then go to every audition you can. I got my first tech writer job when I was in college because I went to a party and schmoozed up my future boss explaining the kind of work I was doing in the kind of work I was looking to do. I got a job in my desired field and he got a cheap but talented to update his manuals. From there I worked at Adobe and intel. People are doing what you want to do. All you have to do is get counseled by those people or the people who know those people.
@@NaturalWorldFacts I think you're better. I hope you stay on your own. You're already doing it, you don't need them, in my opinion. Maybe you could make your own unique channel, wait.... I guess you could start a production company. I'm not sure what you'd need, but you seem well on your way. Please don't go to mainstream. They come across fake and manipulative. I haven't found any nature shows I can sit through in 4 decades. If I saw a go fund me for you, I'd go for it. I'm so happy I found your channel!
I’m so happy that you got a new one out! Your documentaries are by far my favorite, and as soon as I saw there was a new one, I shut off the Xbox, turned the lights off, and just soaked it all up!
A while back I was bed bound for a few days in a lot of pain and in and out of being coherent but I remember stumbling apon your videos and watching them on repeat, it was the only thing that made things feel bearable but when I got better I had no idea how to find those videos again. I’m Soo glad this popped up in my feed
Crazy! And so cool to see you collaborating with the Schmidt Ocean Institute. Always a pleasure watching these amazing videos you put out, and this one was brilliant to say the least ✨🥰🐳
Aw thank you!! SOI are AMAZING, so getting to work with them is always a blast! I’m really glad you enjoyed this one. ☺️ Did you have any favourite moments in particular? I’d love to know your thoughts, it’s so so helpful for crafting future videos!
The newly discovered hydrothermal vent field was awe-inspiring to see! Seeing the joy on their faces, ugh-! I imagine the data collection for that must've been so exciting 🥺💕
You’re bringing such professional and well written videos about the importance of both discovery and preserving these environments is one and the same! I rewatch these videos SO MUCH, I can’t get enough. Thank you for bringing these to the public eye for free
You are a talented documentarian. I have been watching since back when you had only a few videos, and it has been great to see your growth. Science communicators like you do incredibly valuable work. I suffer ptsd symptoms and it was very rough a few years back. Often, the calm narration in your videos was helpful to me. Now, i enjoy your work for the information. Thanks for these amazing videos!
This was such a good documentary, I'm really glad I got to catch the premiere at the Royal Institution!! Sorry I didn't manage to say hi after it, I had to catch a train urgently, but it was seriously amazing 😄 The footage was impeccable, and your narration terrific as well! Look forward to see what your collaborations with Schmidt will bring in the future!
YOU WERE THERE?!? NO WAY! WHATT! I am actually so so sad to have missed you, did you have to travel far? 😭 that’s incredibly lovely of you to have come - I was wondering if you made it. What did you think? It was nerve wracking.
@@NaturalWorldFacts I was there, with my partner! 😄 (we both work in deep-sea palaeontology, she really liked the documentary as well!) We'd come from Cambridge, so not too far from London. We both thought it was a beautifully made doc, some of the deep-sea communities reminding us of fossil ecosystems we study! And you handled the audience questions really well😄 Again, really sorry I couldn't stick around to chat, but I'm sure we'll be able to meet up at some point!
I’ve read through the comments and was honestly quite shocked to find out you were not already “discovered” by the BBC, or NG, or any other. Your documentaries are so professional, and beautifully done. It’s captivating, interesting, and -of course- educational. Fingers crossed somebody will find your channel and give you the platform and support you deserve.
This video (and channel) is utterly a triumph. The section covering the subterranean ecosystem is one of the most incredible things I've seen on RU-vid. Hats off to you, Leo.
Thank you so so much!!! Credit also to the AMAZING scientists who discovered the ecosystem. The fact it was found essentially by chance just blows me away - to my memory, they were conducting a separate experiment investigating larval dispersal which wasn’t working so well. They then decided on a whim to flip the rocks, and THAT’S when they discovered it. A whole new ecosystem, from flipping a rock. It took me back to my childhood, flipping logs and finding a hidden world of detritivores and amphibians nestled away in their own domain of deadwood. It’s the power of curiosity in its purest form!
I gasped out loud when I saw this!! I got my mom hooked on your channel. It's something we've been able to bond over lately. I hadn't realized she dreamt of being a marine biologist as a child. It's such a fascinating world for us. I can't wait to watch this with her soon
That’s so wonderful!! Say hello to your mum from me! 😁 Please please let me know what she thinks, if you both find time to watch the film. Best wishes to you both. X
Once again you have blown my expectations out of the water. This exploration is an absolutely incredible scientific endeavour, and it can't be overstated just how important this sort of science is for preserving Earth while ensuring we can continue to live on it. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with the world!
How I've missed your videos, Leo...this one is visually stunning and impeccably produced as always. Well done!👏👏 For me, Dr. Tunnicliffe's summary (at 37:28) is the most important takeaway...all life depends on keeping the deep ocean safe. Let's hope we're smart enough to make it a top priority.
Thank you so much as always Danika!!! 😁😁 Sorry for not getting to this sooner - I always look out for your comment, haha. I really appreciate your feedback. Dr. Tunnicliffe is absolutely amazing - her words, and those of Perer Girguis at the end, were my favourite quotes from all the uncut interviews I worked with to make the film. Just incredible insights!
This channel is an unbridled success. The voice of the narrator is both soothing and gripping, holding your interest and making the viewing experience top notch. I cannot say how nice it is to have a real, professional narrator given how many botched AI voices we're increasingly being forced to listen to. This channel has outstanding content and I've learned so much watching all the videos over the past few months, binging on them as they are so worthy of it. Please keep up the outstanding work, I appreciate your efforts enormously. Cheers!
This means so much. I know I take a long time to get films out 🙈 but it is because I try to perfect every aspect. My next film on the Midnight Zone is finally nearing completion - I first started working on it about 8 months ago, I think! Thankfully I graduate soon and will be doing this full-time, so hopefully I’ll be able to get films out much faster. Thank you, truly, for bearing with me. ❤️ I can’t begin to express how much I appreciate it.
@NaturalWorldFacts congratulations on you graduating soon. Can't wait to see your next documentary. I know it would be beautiful, just like the rest of the work that you put out. Your work is highly appreciated I enjoy every aspect of it..
yayyyy! im autistic and the ocean is my special interest; i watch countless docs but your videos are truly a delight. i can tell how deeply you care about marine life, and how much it fascinates you as it does i. i often rewatch old vids to relax. so happy to have newstuff to enjoy. thank you very much! ❤
This is so sweet! Thank you for this, and for sticking with me for so long. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am without you!! I’m curious, do you know roughly what film it was that first led you to find me way-back-when?
From little homemade videos on Hermit Crabs to the Falkor 2. You've lived a real dream Leo/NWF, proud to have been watching your channel the last 5 years. Keep Going, Keep Growing, and Keep Learning
That makes me so warm - thank you for this! I’ve loved the natural world through a deep and unwavering fascination for as long as I can remember, and films have always felt like the most natural and rewarding way to package up that deep sense of awe, wonder, and fathomless beauty into a single work that might convey, through sights and sounds, the way that connection with nature always felt to me. I’m still astounded (and delighted to no end) that people like yourself watch and enjoy my little creations!
@@NaturalWorldFactsI can't agree more, the natural world is so full of profound beauty. I've always felt the best way to understand ourselves is to understand the world around us and all the beautiful forms of life and incredible scientific events that surround us and build our very bodies. I found your channel 5 years ago while googling fun fact files for a friend of mine's kid, over time I found myself hooked and shouting with excitement at the release of every episode of your deep sea series to date. I still find myself using them to drift to sleep even if I can't seem to absorb any more from them haha 😅 You have a blessed gift in both the love of nature and for storytelling, as such from a fellow lifelong nature lover to another, keep it up friend. ❤
Truly I can't describe how much I like these videos, everything from narration, visuals, music, pacing and information is just so well made and soothing it's crazy
So happy for you, Leo.. Seeing how far you've come in the few years I have been watching this fine channel.. so much success ahead with your natural talent.. Thank you.. 🙏🙋🏻♀️
This is by far the most fascinating marine documentary, at least for me. Nat geo or BBC should hire this guy for narrating their Documentaries instead. Well, if Sir David Attenborough's time is due, they knew who will succeed him. Bravo, Leo!
I'm going into a masters in marine biology in a couple of months time. im so excited to know that I am here, just in time for the incredible discoveries and leaps in technology. My jaw was on the floor with the high-resolution mapping of the sea floor. This is absolutely massive to the field. It is going to impact so much of our knowledge about our planet as it continues to be used.
Your channel is probably one of the only ones I’ve ever felt like I “found” someone before they made it big. These videos are amazing and I truly think you’ll have a successful career in documentaries and marine biology. Best of luck and keep it coming!
I missed you and your videos. So happy you managed to live this beautiful experience doing what you love. This documentary is excellent and I hope more are on the way
Leo, this is absolutely brilliant work! So glad to see a video from you, and it was well worth the wait! So happy to see how far you've come, and how you've nurtured your passion for the sea and for filming. Proud of you!
You never cease to amaze me with the quality of your documentaries, it was great to know more about the people behind the amazing footage you show. So much work! Falkor (too) needs to visit the coast of Chile, the submarine geology and wildlife here is amazing!
Leo!!!! I hate these videos because they END!!! My goodness Sir, what a great job you've done with this!!! I absolutely LOVE all of your videos!!! I did not like waiting so long for another!! But it was well worth the wait, 100% sure worth it!!! Please keep these wonderful videos coming!!! 💙 💙 💙
I use these to fall asleep most often, I have insomnia; thank you! I appreciate your documentaries on sea life, it’s concise and accurate! Marine life is beautiful and you show it so
This was better than many mass-produced documentaries. I absolutely love the pacing you use. One reason I always loved documentaries is because they are relaxing non-fiction stories that slowly progress. But it seems like most of the ones that are produced by networks now are fast-paced and overly dramatic, making them stressful rather than relaxing. Also, your video is stunningly beautiful.
I've been catching all of the live streams for the Salas y Gomez Seamount Expedition so I was very pleased to see a new NWF doc about Schmidts voyages!
It was my dream as a child to be a marine biologist. I never formally pursued it, but I am so glad to have your videos to learn from and enjoy these amazing scientific discoveries. ❤ thank you to all involved. You have made the love and excitement of deep ocean exploration accessible to all.
I SOOOO LOVE THIS CHANNEL, AND LEO!! It has NEVER ceased to AMAZE, educate, inspire, calm, and just plain FASCINATE me! THANK YOU 🙌 for sharing it...for FREE! We are ALL so much better, having seen it. ☆Blessed Be☆
I can’t begin to express how happy that makes me! It was wildlife documentaries like Blue Planet and South Pacific that first inspired me to love the natural world and pursue a life centred around understanding and appreciating it - I’ve wanted to be a nature documentarian since I could walk. If I can inspire even just one other person, I’ll be over the moon.
You are so talented,.I stumbled across your page the other day and have been completely blown away with the quality of your work. Keep going, real talent will always get recognized, and you sir have extreme talent.
i love your docus and your voice and narration is so soothing. they’ve been doing wonders to get me back on track after pretty intense bouts of anxiety. wishing you nothing but the best!! Congrats on this collab 🎉
Thank you so much! That means the world ❤️ the next film is nearly complete and I’m so excited to share it. I hope you’re okay. I know how challenging anxiety can be, I’m wishing you the very best!
Started watching this channels blto wiench my curiosity about marine life, Found out that these videos and narration serves a latent function to relieve my stress and anxiety levels and helps me stay calm. Thanks for the great documentaries !!
Amazing video. The script, narration, and editing are so professional. Your videos are truly the best documentaries I have seen in a long time. Thank you so much and I hope you get a deal with a large company so you have more resources to make your videos.
This is my first video from your channel and I am fully subscribed now and wanted to say... one of my first thoughts was that you're the nature documentary voice of the next generation! I know it and now that I also know you're deep sea obsessed like me I got a lot of great videos to watch, so thank you
Thank you for these videos. They genuinely have been getting me more interested in deep sea life, especially microfauna. Having something I can access that is calming, educational, and free has been really beneficial to my personal life as well and is also greatly appreciated.
I've had an intense hyperfixation with sea creatures and marine biology documentaries since I was a kid and rewatching Finding Nemo for the 12th time in a row and was practically raised by David Attenborough's Our Planet. I'm neurodivergent and an artist and editor and soooo particular about the documentaries I watch but this has hit the damn spot and I'm obsessed with this channel now. I get so giddy when I see someone loving marine biology as much as you clearly do. Please keep this up, it is my favourite thing right now. Blood belly comb jellyfish are so beautiful they unironically make me emotional lmao
this is such an amazing documentary and every movie beats the one before in quality and information. my adhd makes it hard to keep concentrated on long videos, but I watched this in one go without breaks. I love learning about the deep sea and I'm very thankful that you make those videos accessible and understandable for other people ❤
I love watching these videos. I’m going to college for marine biology soon, and these videos make me go “holy shit, this could be my job”. Love them, keep it up.
I think that is a line I will never forget. A thing that will occasionally pop up in my head and just leave me in complete wonder and awe. "80% of our planet's living space is the deep sea, and that means 80% of our planet's living space has never experiences sunlight." 35:55
First come the scientists, then come the bulldozers. Beautiful footage and fantastically written, but I really hate to see what comes next for what we do to the ocean deep.
I agree!! Many of these scientists’ work is helping us realise the enormous importance of deep-sea biodiversity, in many ways to make a case AGAINST any exploitation!
Human habitat destruction vs The most volatile environment on Earth. I really hope that scientific research can push back on deep sea mining. If it's not...climate change is already bringing back the Hadean Ocean, do we really want to reset all life on earth for profit?
They've already started mining hydrothermal vents. All those delicate chemosynthetic communities? Yeah they're beyond destroyed. Enjoy your cheaper solar panels and electric cars.
Absolutely love this channel.. Can't help falling asleep every time, so informative, insane relaxing. Even my cat just relaxing and enjoying the calm video..The music and voice, watch your video multiple times a day, home after work.. Keep it up !
I missed you while you were gone. Great work! Truly your best documentary to date, and one of your most exciting. I hope you continue to grow. Thank you.
I always get super hyped every time I watch your videos. Deep sea biology really hits different than almost any other subject. I kinda wish I would've gone to university for marine biology. But hey, I've got a degree in audio engineering. And as an audio engineer, great job on the sound. The sound design, all the way from the atmospheric backgrounds to the music and the foley, is pristine!
You have most likely heard this by now, but you, my friend, give Attenborough a run for his money.... your pace, lovely brogue accent, your smooth, calm esthetic of oratory voice & especially the subjects script is all superbly phenomenal. My new favorite channel. ❤
Thanks for making this channel! I've just taken a look at all your videos and your growth has been amazing. Congrats on partnering with a thought leader in the industry!
This has to be one of the most inspiring, exciting and beautifully produced documentary I’ve watched. While observing these new discoveries is absolutely mind blowing and fascinating I’m also loving watching the passion and enthusiasm of these many scientists and their unbridled excitement when they spot a rare or new sighting. Gratitude to the scientists for their dedication in exploring these unseen world and a massive thanks to the creator for allowing us to share this journey.
I was so happy to hear of this discovery, and I was even happier to see you put a video out about it! This is truly such an incredible discovery and I’m so excited to see where it can take our understanding of chemosynthetic organisms and possibly carbon based life forms in general! This is huge!
With David Attenborough not long for this world, Leo Richards should be his heir-apparent. David has been my favorite nature narrator for decades now, but Leo is amazing as well….
Fantastic documentary! Absolutely brilliant, as always. I would love a version without the other voices, though, for easy listening 😴 not that they’re not interesting and provide a valuable point of view, but they don’t have your relaxing cadence.
This was incredible! Well worth the wait. Thank you for sharing; it also helps me understand my theory that life does exist beyond this planet. I have a theory that there are ecosystems out there that can survive without the elements that we need to survive.
Still find it amazing that your documentaries are often etter quality, more competently edited and choregraphed than what many professsional production companies release.
Brilliant coverage of a fascinating world and the scientists who are working hard to protect and learn about it. This channel is really something special.
