THIS was the essence of The Doors: dark, foreboding, and mysterious, not merely a song, but a morbid poem from the mind of The American Poet, Jim Morrison. Undeniably a classic.

As a teenager back in 1972, I was behind the wheel of the family car heading west-southwest on U. S. Hwy 24 toward Colorado Springs with my folks at the beginning of a summer vacation trip. The front range of the Rocky Mountains were ahead and storm clouds were boiling up above the peaks. Bursts of static from not too distant lightning punctuated music playing on the AM radio. "Riders on the Storm" came over that radio. It was a perfect moment that I recall, half a century later. Great music can do that.

The Doors lacked a bass guitarist (except during recording sessions), so for live performances Ray Manzarek played the bass parts on a Fender Rhodes piano keyboard bass. His signature sound was that of the Vox Continental combo organ, an instrument used by many other psychedelic rock bands of the era. During the recording of this song, the bass part was done by Jeffy Scheff, who was Elvis Presley's bass player at the time.

This was the last song The Doors recorded with Jim Morrison. He left to go to Paris soon after. The song was released in June 1971 & Jim died in Paris on July 3, 1971. The "killer on the road" he refers to was Billy Cook, a serial killer that killed a young family in the early 50's. The event disturbed Morrison so much, that he also wrote a screenplay inspired by it called "The Hitchhiker". The Doors consisted of four mega-talented musicians who each brought their own form of genius into every song they did. There are so many to choose from - "The Crystal Ship"(my fave Doors song), "Love Her Madly", "Light My Fire", "The End", "Spanish Caravan", "Break on Through", "LA Woman", "Moonlight Drive", “Five to One”, "Touch Me", "The Unknown Soldier", "When the Music's Over", “Waiting for the Sun” - just to name a few.

cook is the spark, but the hitcher is also symbolic motif for embracing a bad option. the lone wolf on the road. part ghost & spirit.... imo, morrison meant this song to be a pastoral prayer to our culture. its stripped down blake symbolism w/ much density b/c of the connective thread it connects w/ the images... road is the present leading forward to future. the hitcher the option of darkness & sinking into madness. but also the option to veer from its force & bravely ride the open road, & the storm. find a good mate & build peace.... much like in forest gump key characters post nam. morrison laid the blueprint out in a time (1970) when the vessel (culture & himself) where in the sheer winds of the storm. american pastoral. may have been their best work, top to bottom. quite the coda for morrison.

Amber's right to note the jazz influence on this tune, just as "Roadhouse Blues" was blues-influenced. The Doors loved fusing elements of other styles with their music. You can hear bossa nova in "Light My Fire," more jazz in "People are Strange," and the song "LA Woman" has a rollicking barrel-house piano solo (courtesy of Ray Manzarek, the name you're looking for).

This was the last song on the album that was actually the last album Jim Morrison made with the doors of course back in the day it was released on vinyl so they did a thing just like they did on Sergeant Pepper's there was an inner Groove so if your needle didn't pick up and it just kept playing on that inner Groove all you heard was the storm you'd hear the rain falling and it would just keep going and going and going I think that's pretty symbolic of this music since it goes on forever if you notice when you're listening to the lyrics the overdubbed it Jim Morrison is whispering in the background the same lyrics along with the singing another little interesting fact they moved into a some apartment building and that's where they recorded it was like upstairs somewhere on like Hollywood Boulevard anyhow they brought a bass player into the group they didn't have a bass player before Ray manzarek just played the bass on his keyboards before so this last album was the actually the first time that they had a bass player yeah this song is very mystical and really has the power to it it's just unexplainable I remember one time I was in a car with my sister-in-law and I fell asleep listening to this song and it seemed like it went on for so long because you know when you're in a dream state time can be distorted and seem like a super long so it was almost like an hour it seems like and the funny thing is it was raining at the time we were driving and listening to Jim do is Magic of course I don't forget John Densmore and Robby Krieger and Ray manzarek okay kids

@@bryanhale5254 There's this wonderful thing called punctuation. Maybe you've heard of it? Might make your missive a little easier to read. I did read it all the way through. You juxtaposed thoughts that really didn't flow together well, and a comma or a period every now and again may make it clear that they are separate thoughts. I understand that sometimes when the words are flowing you don't want to take a break to put a dot after you finish a thought. Stream-of-consciousness and all that. It is still helpful to your readers to be able to break down what you're saying. Nice exposition and good observations! Also, you elucidated a few things I didn't know. Thank you for that!

Besides the legend himself on vocals, the Doors consisted of Robby Krieger on guitar, Ray Manzarek on keys, and John Densmore on drums. Four musicians from entirely different styles and disciplines coming together to become one of the most iconic blues rock/psychedelic groups of all time. The Doors used session bassists on recordings (others are more equipped to tell you who), but Manzarek would play the bass parts on a separate set of keys during live performances.

"Killer on the road" also is a reference to a part Morrison was supposed to play in a then-upcoming movie. He was to be a traveling serial killer who hitches rides to find his next victims. The movie was never made since Morrison's OD death precluded him from ever starring in it.

Something for y'all to listen for the next time you play this song: one of the things that makes Morrison's vocals unique in this song is that he's also whispering every line underneath his singing. I have a childhood trauma story related to this song, For those who don’t live in the South like I do in Alabama,we have very long goodbyes. After the visit is over it takes at least 10 minutes to stand up and go to the door much less to the car. The 15 or 20 minutes more of conversation and good byes in the drive way! So picture a child grade school age, waiting in the car getting more and more nervous the darker it gets. Why ? Because There’s a Killer on the Road!! Hello!

The bass player here is the legendary hired gun Jerry Scheff. He came up with this bass part after hearing Ray Manzarek play him the basic tune for the song on his piano. He plays on pretty much every song on this album. Jerry was a big part of Elvis's TCB (Taking Care of Business) band for about 8 years until Elvis died. He had started out as a session musician. Name a crooner and Jerry played behind him at one time or another. At age 81, he's still playing bass.

"Riders on the Storm" defined vibe decades before vibe was even a thing. "There's a killer on the road \ His brain is squirmin' like a toad" -- 'nuff said. Remember the hypno-toad on Futurama? The lyric "Into this world we're thrown" supposedly invokes Heidegger's concept of thrownness -- a state of being in the present "with all its attendant frustrations, sufferings, and demands that one does not choose, such as social conventions or ties of kinship and duty." This was the last song Jim Morrison recorded with the band before he died. When you're ready for more from The Doors, check out "Light My Fire" (the full album cut), "Break On Through (To the Other Side)", "Love Street", "L.A. Woman", "Love Her Madly", "Soul Kitchen", "Strange Days", "Five to One", "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind", and "Peace Frog" along with so many other greats.

I've visited Jim's grave in Paris where he died. He's buried in Père Lachaise. Lots of famouse people,actors ,writers etc are buried here and it's a great place to visit. Oscar Wild the Irish playwright is also buried here as well as the French singer Édith Piaf. And the Doors didn't have a base player. They used sesion bass players like Recking Crew bassist and pianist Larry Knechtel who was part of a group of people who played on many famouse songs in the 60's and Country singer Glenn Campbel was also in the Recking Crew as a guitar player at one time. Also a few other sesion bass players played with the Doors as well. But live Ray Manzarek their keyboard player played a keyboard with two sets of keys and with one hand he did the keyboard part and with the other hand played the bass parts. Love this song as it's just so good.

This came out in 71 after the Manson murder madness and you can definitely tell it inspired Morrison's writing. In this song with "killer on the road, if you give this man a ride sweet family will die" and in LA Woman when he said "motel money murder madness, change the mood from glad to sadness." Jay Sebring (one of the Manson family victims) was Jim's hair stylist and it is rumored that Jim even met and maybe even hung out with Manson. I read somewhere that Jim came and picked Manson up at Spahn Ranch.

Dennis Wilson (The Beach Boys) was also apparently mixed up with the Manson family somewhere along the road. Just leaves you shaking your head.
@Dirtbag_Deluxe
@Dirtbag_Deluxe 2 года назад
@@richarddexter7641 yes he picked up Patricia Krenwinkle and another Manson girl (can't remember which one) while they were hitch hiking and took them back to his house and he let them stay there while he went to record and when he got back Manson and the whole family was there. Him, Manson and the girls hit it off and they stayed there for a few months until he had enough of them leaching off of him and he moved and quit paying the bills and eventually Manson and the family got booted out and then they stumbled upon the Spahn Ranch.

I read several books about the Manson Cult, they befriended Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, he was too generous, they kind of trashed his house. Also crossed paths with Terry Melcher, the son of Doris Day, and in the late sixties a wunderkind producer of rock and pop. He listened to Manson's music, but did not think that much of it. Terry lived in the house with Candice Bergen before Sharon Tate, and some speculated that the Manson cult were looking for Melcher, but he knew he had moved out. However, in any of the books I read did I read that Manson and Jim Morrison crossed paths. I read a biography of Manson, and the books Helter Skelter by the prosecuter, Vincent Buogliosi and anothe book by a former cult member.

When I first heard light my fire I knew we were suddenly in a different and undefined moment in history. It was so sudden and radical. My mind was freed. I remember I was listening toArchie bell and the drells tighten up and suddenly a guy who was driving down the street was blasting light my fire and I remember i had to hear more. I didn’t go back to listening Archie bell. Oh yeah one last thing I noticed the Beatles changed after this too. It was such a radical moment. A free movement. A movement unlike we ever had since and maybe never will again.

The Doors were among the most controversial & influential rock acts of the 1960s, mostly due to Jim Morrison's lyrics & voice. "Riders On The Storm" is my favorite song by them but they had a lot of hits including "The End", "Roadhouse Blues", "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", "Love Me Two Times", "L.A. Woman", "Hello, I Love You", "Touch Me", "The Unknown Soldier", "Love Her Madly". Sadly Jim Morrison died in 1971 at the age of only 27 but left a great legacy of music.

My favourite Doors song. But then I love Jazz and Blues so..... From your reactions I'm pretty sure you'd love Solid Air (the song or anything off the album of the same name) by John Martyn. A totally unique singer and guitarist he seems to have slipped into obscurity but he had a big following in his day. And he often had the great Danny Thomson on bass (you listening, Rob?) He died too young but left a great legacy of magical music. I know Amber would trip out on it.

Love this track, it's such an atmospheric song, with Jim's whispered overdub in the verses. Both Ray on keys and Robby on guitar evoke watery sounds beautifully. Those tinkling, cascading run downs are genius, and the coda when Ray and Bobby trade little riffs, is like the rainfalls last trickles as the storm subsides.

They sometimes used bass players in the studio but the keyboard player, Ray Manzarek, used a little bass keyboard that sat on top of his main keyboard, and used it to play bass. I saw them play this live and Ray played that cool bass line with his left hand and all the rest with his right. My friends and I used to play music trivia all the time and my default killer question was "who was the Doors bass player?" Got 'em every time. Love you guys! 😁✌💛

This might be the creepiest song ever made, when you know it's story. The music was inspired by the C/W song "Ghost riders in the sky" about a band of ghost cowboys. The words were inspired by actual events. Some from Jim Morrison's experience hitch hiking across Florida when he was in college and the weirdos, freaks and scary people who gave him rides. Also by an actual serial killer in the 50's. Can't remember his name but he killed 6 people while hitch hiking from Kansas to California, including a man, his wife and two young children. The line in the song says "give this man a ride, sweet family will die", The line "Into this world we're thrown" was inspired by a German philosopher who said "We are all thrown into this world by no choice of our own and have to make of it what we will" to which another German philosopher said "But we prefer it to a dog's life, fighting for scraps in the street" which inspired the "like a dog without a bone" line. It's a pretty deep song, that bass line makes it creepier, sounds like something chasing you that won't stop. To add to the creepiness level, they recorded a track of Jim Morrison whispering the words and dubbed him singing over it.

This is a song you listen to in the dark, with the lights turned off, and let your mind get into the music. The jazz musicianship in this rock group, was amazing. The long instrumentals, and the beat, is hypnotic. From what I understand, this was the last song that Jim Morrison did in the studio, and then went to Paris, where he died.
