I think one of my favorite parts of the project is how corporate interests drive the story. It’s not just scary because of whats in the pit, its scary because of what happens out of it. People find a giant, living pit of flesh and what do they do? They make it a park, with merch, tours, and IHOP. They put the flesh chemicals in a soda. It works so well as a sort of double sided horror.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Nick being a furry vtuber let alone collabing with Shia. I mean, this content is right up my alley, but hearing the deep voice of the guy I'd listen to internet horror stories from in high school being linked to it is wild.

1:04:00 so in the Aztec creation story the earth starts as primordial ocean that is home to a massive creature called Cipactli ( probably spelling that wrong ) with hungry mouths all over its body. Tezcalipolka, god of the night, lures the creature and gets one of his legs eaten before his brothers can subdue it... and they *repurpose* its body to be the landmass people live on. Oh, and it ain't dead, just subdued, and it wants to eat everything all the time-- sated by blood sacrifces.

I'm SO glad you guys got to see the emergency broadcast video. It's one of my ABSOLUTE favorite pieces of analog horror/unfiction - the recording is of a MINOR event, and while the only thing that """happens""" in the video is the viewer's home experiencing tremors and the distant bellowing of the creature, it really illustrates the unfathomable SCALE that this thing exists on and how existentially terrifying it would be to be anywhere NEAR the superorganism. It uses a small event to help mentally scale what the major event might have been like to experience even in just the surrounding area, by people who have never stepped into the pit or gotten involved and are just minding their business. It evokes the experience of feeling massive tremors from fracking, something terrifying and unstoppable - except it's being caused by the cogs of corporate greed, the mechanisms of capitalistic exploitation - things may have been FINE if everything was left well enough alone. The mundanity of recording tremors and bellowing hints at just how horrifying the whole picture actually IS. anyway yes that's my long ramble about why a video that's under two minutes long is one of my favorite things in unfiction today

I really, really like the presentation of this project. A collection of items, documents, and other ephemera related to a place, not necessarily presented in chronological order, but with information given regarding each item itself. All of them alluding to (or, in the case of the incident report, directly informing us of) the collapse of everything related to it that once was. Also, related to MFPNP - there's a channel here on youtube with two official pieces of media relating to the Permian Basin Superorganism. The channel is "Mystery Flesh Pit National Park Historic Archive" and the videos are "[ EAS 08 : 14 : 2018 ]" and "Project Freefall"

I’m sad they started at the most recent posts instead of the beginning of the story! I feel like fun and history of the park really makes the horror of the incident hit home. Starting there, without the context, feels a bit odd

( EDIT! I am coming back and adding the creator handles to projects I've found as I hunt them down again. No point in saying This Exists if I don't say where to see it 😅 ) There are, at this time, 4 Mystery Flesh Pit game projects I am aware of. 1 is The Living Abyss, an indie title that is released and playble 2 is another indie project still in development and lacking a title, the dev has posted a few videos of things they've got built and running, and appears to have you playing as a Trail Ranger since you have a bolt driver and stent frames in the dev vids posted by user Sloga. 3 is a table top RPG being developed by the creator. It is currently delayed since the successful crowdfunding of a book on the pit, which he feels should be done first since people donated to make it happen. 4 is the Mystery Flesh Pit in Roblox- it appears to be a pretty excellent and massive map of the known pit anatomy, but since its in Roblox the people most aware of its existance and talking about it are tweens.

I like to believe the artist responsible for this world building was originally a biology student or major that just went fuckin ham because they decided they wanted to be an artist. Like there's just so much detail and realism with the bioligical responses of the pit and how the microorganisms would function if they were animals to convince me of that being the case.

1:08:47 fun fact! That red text message of "There is nothing past this fence worth DYING for." Is a message posted at underwater caves that have claimed lives. "There is nothing past this sign worth dying for." Being the common text, along with warnings that divers DO NOT have the skills for underwater cave traversal unless they are also a trained spelunker AND rock climber as knowledge, training, and EXPERTIESE in all 3 is required to traverse that hazordus of a space and not be *garunteed* to die in there. There's also additional gear for underwater caving, usually involving a post system like rock climbers use but for keeping air, power, and the diver's rescue harness cords out of the way AND providing a marked path back. You need a pick in case the worst case scinario happens and a cave in cuts surface oxygen, with an emergancy oxygen tank on your person needing to be *gently* opened to oxygenate the air you're breathing but not SO far that you pop a seal and let water in. That takes practice. But every year, some divers think they're the exception and explore a cave They Just Found. And then they go missing. And then someone with all that gear and training goes down there to check for their remains, and another sign gets posted underwater to hopefully save the next diver who finds that particular cave. Makes me think the creator has worked in Public Safety at some point, considering his in-deapth knowledge of Every Single Way This Operation Would Hurt People.

We have “Yellowstone”, “Grand Canyon”, “Big Bend”, “Crater Lake”, and whatnot. They can be a bit on the nose sometimes. When you have a massive pit of flesh that you want to make a tourist attraction, there’s not a ton of great options in terms of names lol.
@theoneandonlymichaelmccormick

@@vvlaze It’s called “The Grand Canyon” and not “Natural Formation Distinguished by Layered Bands of Red Rock”. Because little Timmy from Nebraska isn’t gonna wear a $25 baseball cap that says “Mystery Flesh Pit” on it.
