16:59 maybe it’s just my tastes, but I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if we just had these shots without text. Closed Door, phone, coffee, basement noises, etc with zero text. It’d give a chance for the atmosphere to breathe. It’s depicting an empty still world. THEN there should be corresponding text, in the description or a link site/document. Editing the two together leaves me focused on the narrative, which hurts the ambience (which I think is very good). Give me context LATER, let me sit with these images and feelings. I also think it’d make it look like more of an unfinished documentary

Yeesh being there for the first half I had no clue it got this nutty. Watching the VOD I think I realized why this didn’t work for me: it started as a death note kind of story but it suddenly tried to make itself into blue velvet with the underlying suburban mafia thing. Problem is, aside from not being able to portray the seedier stuff among other things like blue velvet, this story didn’t have the base for it and didn’t set up for that kind of story anyway. It’s like starting with a sour dough base and then suddenly trying to make pasta out of it. People are gonna find it off putting instead of a cool twist. I do hope the folks that made it have another shot at a new story cuz they do have chops but just need to refine it a bit. PS. Also missed opportunity to have Hollis and his roommate be a thing so we could make “be gay do crime” jokes but alas we can’t have everything lmao

I genuinely thought that "the barrel was empty??" was about that there actually was something - some force, spirit, some THING - that was released when he opened, that has been locked there for all those years in this mysterious barrel. Instead it was... I am not sure even what happened there. There was the investigation arc, of course, a classic - after spooky thing 1, a guy uncovering it all enters a scene and the vibe changes, aha, seen it before way too many times... and then... it turns into really boring, annoyingly made b ullshit ending with a nice insult to anyone who bothered getting invested. They really needed a good editor who would made them cut like... most of it all, but clearly there have been very strong emotions going on there concerning the whole project, so I doubt they would listen to any advice... Got second hand embarassment watching that ending...

The theory I've seen that I think works best about the storybook is that the prince represents the supernatural/alien/whatever force responsible for these creatures. The "magic powers" is the aforementioned supernatural ability to create these creatures. It appeared on Earth a long time ago, wounded, and the "creatures", possibly primitive humans, began worshipping and feeding it, allowing it to recover and leave, only to return recently, as it was said to do in the story. It's, presumably, the cult's way of teaching the history of the god/whatever to indoctrinate children, but is probably extremely biased. The entity may think it's helping, but from the sound of what appeared to be malevolent laughter from the singularity, I think it's pretty certain to be malevolent.

Up until that point Anthony had been talking about how little he’d been able to find out about Hollis, so did he just make the names up and hope the doctor wouldn’t notice, or did he have their names this whole time and just do nothing with the information?

If people won't learn the term unfiction they should at least call it internet horror. I don't think a decent analogue horror has been made by anyone who didn't spend a significant portion of their childhood using analogue technology, it's usually too obviously fake.

You're the only other person I've heard express some disappointment in graylock. I've been dogpiled in comments for saying it's not as good as I anticipated and while it had good elements it was just another "they're like humans but not" story, when I'd hoped for better from a veteran RU-vidr like Rob Gavagan. Regarding this series Darian definitely has talent, if he works on refining his talent I can see him becoming a staple in unfiction.

Oh yeah, when Fred and I went through it, what was so clear was how each episode had its potency and quality, but as an actual weaving narrative, it just didn't manage to connect properly enough and kept getting away from its established center. The last video (12, I think?) brought it back so fiercely and came in like it had been training in secret for six months to be a whole new weight class.

Outside of your criticisms (which I generally agree with), my biggest problem with Vita Carnis is how obviously it wears its influences on its sleeve. With every video I was constantly like “That’s from Gemini Home Video. That’s from Local 58. That’s from The Monument Mythos. That’s from Midwest Angelica. That’s from The Backrooms.” It’s not like we haven’t seen this before with internet horror, remember how fast every “Slenderverse” trope established by Marble Hornets got turned into a cliche that infected every other ARG-based series for a decade? Analog horror is already eating itself because so many newcomers are just lifting their ideas wholesale from the genre’s progenitors and heavy hitters.
@NickNocturneAL
@NickNocturneAL 19 часов назад
If there was a criticism to this project I should've brought up, it is that. You're right, really--it's so clear in its inspirations, because they border on imitation. And sometimes have moments outright of imitating, like the "LOOK AT THESE FALSE HUMANS" trope that I couldn't stand upon seeing it.

Emergency alert tones are, by design, intended to be obnoxious so as to grab a viewers attention. Additionally, very few "informational" tapes of yesteryear, which is what I assume creators are trying to emulate, were well produced. They rarely possessed "professional" quality sound design, or graphical components, so I view these qualities as intrinsic to the format. The whole snobby, "I'm the authority on all things analog horror" shtick is always so grating and unappealing; I'd rather listen to that high pitch alert tone.

On one hand, Nick isn't entirely wrong that the government being evil in analogue horror is a bit cliché, but on the other hand generally speaking the government does tend to be evil, so in a way I'd be curious to see the explanation in an analogue horror series for when and why that isn't the case.

Nick's right the lineup of almost-humans could be a meme at this point. I almost want someone to make a one-off parody analogue horror video that has some trope of "the evil deadly aberrant creature looks almost human, except for some slightly off details, like this *proceeds to show some stretched out, toothy, freaky, wendigo-esque monster that does not look in any way like a normal human*"

Request for Moone! The editing has been delightful, but could I request a more dyslexia friendly font for some of captions? The stylized font is lovely, but my brain hates me immensely and some of them are a bit hard to read. (Also bless you for lowering the volume, may your ears recover quickly!!) NOT THE CRAWL JERKY IMPORTED FROM FLORIDA. Florida would do that, though. (GOOSEBOOSE MENTIONED!! I adore them. Was legit watching some of their stuff before this.) I'm also so tired of the distorted faces for analogue horror. It's never fully gotten me simply because the uncanny valley does so much better to disturb me than like. Massively distorted faces. Also,you always look good! (And the impromptu voice direction? Bless, I'm gonna use that.) Also also Halloween is year round and everyone can fight me on it. I really do like how you're doing live and scripted content. Live feels a lot like we're all piled in a sleep-over and giggling over something that we don't know what kind of quality we're going to get. Your scripted stuff is more of a 'ooooh, we're in for the GOOD stuff today'. In general, just full agreement here. And as someone that's lived through the "death" of analogue into digital media, there's an aesthetic and constraints to work under that a lot of "younger" creators don't seem to grasp (gonna start shaking my walking stick at people soon I swear) and a lot of audiences don't seem to grasp either! But I'm glad that some of these creators are going 'okay, I need more than what I can do with just "analogue" horror' and runs with it. Some people thrive in boxes, other's don't! Just gotta figure out if you're a cat or not. /joking And as always, wonderful video Nick. I really do love how you approach everything with a critical but kind eye and want creators to learn and get better. I run into too much explanation/reaction content that either bashes everything or praises everything and that isn't how you get people to grow. I'M SAD WE DIDN'T GET CHEST FLUFF THIS TIME, gotta try to catch it live TT^TT

On one hand I get the criticism that there's little consistent perspective, On the other hand I kinda like the idea of it just showing us snippets of how individuals, governments, etc are handling everything But it does kinda make it hard to care, right? Like it's so broad that it loses the... Connection? We don't have anything particular to connect with. Personally with the S2E1 I think I'd love it if they kept track of the scientists and their group as characters studying the VC. It would make total sense to see a lot of the info we've had come from a group of researchers and scientists who are trying to piece everything together

Having characters to attach to always makes a work stronger--stories are better when they involve people.
@SpecialInterestShow
@SpecialInterestShow 2 дня назад
@@NickNocturneAL exactly. There's a reason why it's so hard to convey a good story without actual characters to connect to. It's sort of like when a very distant relative who you didn't even know dies. You can empathize a bit with your family members who are mourning, but like, you're not gonna feel as connected to the events going on around you as you would be if there's someone you know. Or it's like when a non-developed background character in an anime gets killed off. I'm just like "that sucks I guess but I have no freaking clue who that is or why I should care about them" The harvester torturing the kid to lure the mother is effective but that's only because 1. Naturally, hearing a child going through such agony is gonna disturb us, and the idea of the parent getting lost saving them is ofc something we'd find sad. But mainly it's how well done the child's cry was. It sent shivers from me and really got me connected because of how disturbingly real it sounded. But there's part of the issue, too - I'm only sad for the kid because he's a kid, I'm not sad for the *character*, if that makes sense. If the kid hadn't screamed so heartbreakingly, I'm not sure how much I would have cared, yknow? It's effective because it touches on our social behaviors. Our instincts to want to help a crying child, especially if they're your child. So, the disturbing thing isn't just "what if this was your kid", but it's also "this thing is smart enough to not inject the kid with the paralysis venom until it has lured the mother too". What scares me is the intelligence it shows more than anything else! 2. A lot of us know children or parents in our family (or our friends' kids) who we care about. We hear the cries and think of our relatives dying in such an agonizing way. So, like, even if the characters die quickly, that episode does a great job of conveying the horror and helplessness of being caught by a harvester. Oh, and BTW, we do learn something important about the harvester there: we learn that even with the paralysis, it's still a slow and agonizing death. Imagine being caught, put through physical agony from the venom(s) for minutes.... And then you see your parent coming to try to save you. But you have to watch as they also get caught by the harvester and you both suffer and die, you dying with the knowledge that your screams caused the death of your parent. Sorry I rambled but this is all super interesting to me
