its a little bit weird i guess but there is a very specific kind of undertone that makes mr samuels teatime feel like a parallel with neurodivergence to me, but that may just be my experience and struggle with it. the intense memory problems. the issues with time perception, and feeling confused because of it. feeling stuck in just a single bedroom, not really imprisoned in iron but jailed by the very workings of the mind and its inevitability. i find myself wanting to go outside and meet people, and yet something in my head glitches out and i freeze. i make it out a little bit if im lucky, but i always end up back here in these same four walls. and then there are the times were i say i want to go somewhere, but have no idea where to go or what to do. the way the miniseries uses a melancholic tone throughout. not a creepy one, not a scary one, just...melancholy. a grim acceptance of things as they are. this is how it is, and how it will be. it simultaneously grieves the death of agency, and mourns what could have been, in a way. but like i said, this is because i have this specific experience with my own struggles with autism. its probably not even close to what the creators originally intended
it may not be, but i like the idea that art like this is meant to be felt by so many different people and resonate in multiple ways, even if the writers didn’t think of it during creation. i am also autistic, and i felt that sort of melancholy connection to the series, as well.
you know...i know its wishful thinking, but i really really wish people wouldn't immediately assume creators are monsters who would put someone through SA acting without warning them....especially if nicks showing off the project.
