This is one of the biggest problems with newer tract homes and large scale flippings, they build/flip them in a hurry without putting quality into consideration.
That's not true. They put a lot of consideration into quality. They 'consider' the cost to do the work with any quality beyond cosmetics to be 'too costly', as such they only invest in the cosmetics that will give themselves the best financial return.
@thomasbonse Yes you're correct. But a pre-fab is a lot easier to install, and way less likely to fail. But most people consider them to be cheap and go with custom built shower pans instead, and honestly they're not wrong.
It looks like membrane directly on subfloor or backer, no sloping sub pan, no backer blocks. Gypsum-based backer on the walls, running all the way down into the unsloped perma-puddle. This is a construction defect that needs to be redone by your own (!) professional at the builder’s expense.
I bought the Milwaukee M12 M-spector 360. I don't have to cut large holes in walls anymore, just a small hole. I also use that tool in many other places, but looking for water leaks is one i use it for a lot.
I finally understand why we bought my childhood home raw (before and trades got in, IIUC with just walls, floorslabs, windows, roof) and supervised the entire interior stuff ourselves... From getting quality plaster ceilings, over no shortage of outlets, beautiful mosaic bathroom (thx mom!)...
As a mechanic whom deals with Spark, timing, detonation, and all that fun jazzz building motors and such. BUT What and the fuck is this? Holy crap i have no idea how to diagnose this issue or where to start. Hats off to you friend, this is beyond my mental capacity lol
Funny, I used to work in automotive and now in plumbing. It takes getting used to but you’re still using the same critical/mechanical thinking skills for both trades
I’m the contractor my husband the flipper I would never let my license be jeopardized by sh&t work I always tell him go be with your old contractor I’m sure he is available I don’t do whatever job don’t cut corners
Not sure where you start to diagnose that but a pressure gauge on a hose bib is looking pretty good right about now 😊 that being said, this is a great way to be certain that it is not a shower pan leak. When it’s an upstairs leak dripping through the ceiling I use the same method.
"I'm gonna mark the water level on the wall and monitor it and see if that level drops" I'm not sure I understand what is going to make the water level on the wall drop. Or I'm just not hearing it right I'm lost. I would think that you would look to see if the water level in the shower dropped and then see if the carpet got even more wet. Please somebody Edumacate me. 😊
He's talking about the water level inside the shower pan. Think of it like a shallow bowl. If the water level drops from the mark made, then there's a leak in that shower pan. This is also a non-destructive and inexpensive test (just the cost of a few gallons of water and some time).
@@paulvildnotice that the tile on the back wall goes all the way to the shower floor. There is also a small wall/lip that you step over when you enter the shower. He plugged the drain and filled that bowl/pan with about 2 inches of water.
@@jmackinjersey1 @jmackinjersey1 okay. So had he not been showing the wall while he said that, and had he said the "shower pan wall", I'd have been so much clearer. Thanks for clearing that up.
Looks like pan leaking or they didn't slope it correctly cause should run back to the weep holes in drain but I've seem them clog with grout so either way need to rip tile out
Wait. Everyone is talking about the pan leaking. But no one is talking about the other plumber. At first I wondered why the other plumber didn't fix it. Then the OP said the pipes are in the attic but the first plumber said there may be a leak in the foundation. What did the first guy do when he was there? So glad the homeowner called someone else. That first guy sounded like a major hack and would have caused more problems.
Sir , Don't say anything , If you have nothing useful for sharing. You don't make yourself look any better by saying "Rubbish". This tradesman isn't perfect , But neither are You or I ! So just use it as a tool for learning. I genuinely hope this New Year of 2024 is a great one for everyone !
