I had always heard Orthodoxy described as "mystical," which sounded very vague and nebulous. In reality, I've found it to be much more "real" than certain Protestant denominations in which theology is very cerebral and head-centered. In fact, the noetic reality of Orthodoxy is what struck me when I first started learning about the ancient faiths.

Theology is so much more than an academic exercise. It's not an engagement with abstract concepts; it's an active relationship with the living God. Christianity is a life lived, following and emulating Christ rather than trying to intellectualize and compartmentalize things that go beyond reasoning and can't be categorized. The Son of God showed his cleverness and clarity time and time again, but he chose to live the life of a preacher, healer, and laborer above the life of a researcher, writer, or debater.

@GoatsndRoses and @@Supahpowahnerd890 Yes, Orthodoxy makes absolute sense intellectually and then transports you to the next level, the encounter of God through worship and the Holy Sacraments (Mysteria-Μυστήρια). This is the mystical aspect.

Mysticism is a tradition within a tradition it’s not “mystical”. I think you don’t understand what mysticism is. Please inform yourself before posting. There is a long tradition of mystics in religion.

There are "charismatic protestants" who are more open to mysticism but very prone to flights of fantasy. Because of this, other protestants are "cessationists" who claim that the gifts of the spirit like prophesy and tongues ceased in post-Apostolic times. I was raised non-denominational protestant, became atheist as a scientist and then encountered God in ways that had to be supernatural. One thing (amongst countless many) that attracted me to Orthodoxy was how we acknowledge mysticism but as you say - refrain from pretending to define or fully explain the mysteries.

I am a catechumen of about five months, coming from a Protestant back ground. Glad I stumbled across your video and that you mentioned the book, The Mountain of Silence. I will check and see if my local church Orthodox library has a copy of it, the book looks like something I will gobble up immediately upon opening its cover. I like books along this genre. Thank you for your time and effort. Barekmor.

My question, does this book contain scripture? Is it purely Biblically based? Reading a man's pov is dangerous. We should be led to understand in the Bible. Coming from a place of respect.
@kellyanna94
@kellyanna94 Год назад
@@jamiefaith834 you’ll find the Orthodox Church has more scripture in just one worship service than any Protestant one. Holy Scripture is interpreted by the life of the Church.
@kellyanna94
@kellyanna94 Год назад
@@jamiefaith834 and, based on your argument, reading any book by anyone in the faith would be deemed dangerous. This is the problem with Protestantism - because there is no singular standard for interpreting Scripture correctly (look at the thousands of denominations), it really boils down to “does this or that person seem to have it more correct?” Whereas in Orthodoxy, because the Church has remained the same for 2000 years (theology, worship, etc) and since Scripture was written AFTER the Church was established, there has never been a time where the Church did not have and understand the scriptures in their entirety. So yes, we do not hold to man’s teachings, but rather hold them up to the Church and say “is this consistent with what’s been taught for 2000 years?” Hope that helps. I’d recommend reading the ecumenical councils and early church fathers!

I’m interested in occult Christian magick . ( internal focus that can change outward objective reality in order to help others ) I’m considering Rosicrucian/ Freemasonry or orthodox. What has the deepest most profound magick. I suppose that may even be the wrong question ( I’ve been into learning occult for the greater good for a few years of intense study and I’m ready to Integrate my studying into a lineage/ or current of power that I know is from love. Choosing a path and sticking with it is going to be the hard part . I’ve been a free agent under only sprit of god for so long , it’s weird to think about clicking up into a Christian coven
@IndustrialMilitia

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn - which carries on the practices and beliefs of the original Rosicrucian's - is by far the best form of Christian mysticism. Hermeticism is not in any way Satanic. It is fundamentally Christian.
@olgak.1139

There's no such thing in Christianity in general as magic. Saint Kyprianos for ex was a former magician that abandoned his practices and became a faithful Christian and then Saint .

What about mysticism in other christian denominations such as the Maronites etc?
@angelbaby78
@angelbaby78 3 года назад
No mysticism in Catholicism. There were a few mystics such as St. Bernard of Clairvaux and St. Teresa of Avila, but that was long time ago. Nowadays mysticism is listening to Fr. Rodrigue (false prophet) and visiting Medjugorje. chasing after Marian apparitions is a far cry from true mysticism and intimacy with God.
@TinaHyde
@TinaHyde 3 года назад
@@angelbaby78 But what about all the mysticism before 1054? That still counts as Catholic, yes? I don’t really know much on this topic so I’m genuinely curious. Thank you.

@@TinaHyde St. John Cassian from the 4th - 5th centuries (who was trained in the East) brought Christian Mysticism to the West. See his book "The Conferences". St. Benedict, also was a mystic of the West in the 5th century. After that, the Western Church, as also the entire Western European continent went into the "the Dark Ages", caused by the barbarian invasions of the Germanic and finally Frankish tribes, which completely destroyed civilization (along with the Church structure) in the West. In the year 800 AD the Frankish King Charlemagne tried to unite the fractured barbarian kingdoms of Europe under his authority, under what he called the "Holy Roman Empire", which was neither holy nor Roman. He is the one who reshaped the Western Church, as well, and created what we know today as Roman Catholicism. He enforced the Filioque in the Creed, unleavened bread in the Eucharist, unmarried clergy and the supreme authority of the bishop of Rome over all Christians by using a forged document called 'The Donatum of Constantine". 1054 is not when the West broke away from the East, but rather 800 AD with the actions of Charlemagne.

I was raised Greek Orthodox and had a transformative mystical experience that left me with divine/universal wisdom and knowledge and spiritual or psychic gifts. It happened to me after much suffering while trying to raise my kids and my son who has autism. I was surrounded by family and friends who made my life a living hell. This experience also showed me that religion does not exist in the afterlife. We all exist as souls and are connected to a presence that is larger than anything we can fathom in this human life. We are connected to everything that is, was, and ever will be. There is no past, present, or future. Everything just is. Our extra sensory, beyond the physical, psychic abilities is what we utilize to interact in the afterlife as we do not have a physical body anymore. Nothing is hidden. We are all knowing and communicate with telepathy. I felt the love of God. This overwhelming feeling of absolute and pure unconditional love. The most beautiful feeling I have ever felt. I was in bliss for days seeing the world through a higher perspective and seeing how everything that happens here on earth happens as it is supposed to. There is no such thing as good or evil. Because once we leave this earth it is all seen for what it is. We leave the negative here. And we never die. Everything is energy. It’s part of a greater universe. I am able to channel or download guidance and wisdom that helps me on my path. Nothing negative or “bad” or “evil”. I had fallen to my knees and asked God to help me prior to this experience. It has been a life saver. He showed me how to heal through meditation and self-care. And he has brought people into my life at the right time that have supported my healing process. These are people from different beliefs, mostly spiritual, one Buddhist. I am disappointed that the people I grew up with in church were not there for me. This experience in all has completely turned me away from religion but I continue to walk a spiritual path. I’m just curious to know what your perception of this is.

I wanted to clarify that I do believe in God and Jesus as I was doing Reiki on a lady recently and I saw before me Jesus standing above her head with his hands 🙌 over her head as if he was healing her. I was stunned as he came in very clearly and it was his full body about 1 1/2 to 2 ft. in stature and “hovering” in a sense right above her head. It was the most amazing experience. I hope to have it again as I continue to help others heal as I was helped.

Sacrament as prescribed by Moroni, in the final chapters of the book of Mormon, though, liberally ascertained within the cemeteries. This time was crackers from work and Modello in a big Nos can. The experience of my mysticism has brought me to listen to this orthodox father, Behind the Jesus statue about the Sermon upon the Mount. May the Lord bless you and keep you, those working Trisagion Films. PS, Psalms 35, goes well with Don't Chase The Dead by Marilyn Manson. The mother therein said chapter, I got with a good shot of Mary & #pikespeak. Until then... have mercy.
