MYTHBUSTING: "Do I need separate channels for my Shorts and VODs?" 

Only problem is the people watching the short don’t even notice the play button for the long form content. Make that button more noticeable

Sadly, most of those subscribers who subscribe to your channel via a YT short are not interested in the long form. This is why many content creators have two channels.

If you're really making bridges between these, then separate Shorts from long-form videos on the subscriptions page on the web! Many people have been asking for it for months, and RU-vid doesn't even acknowledge this...

Multiple channels for a creators never made sense to me, glad more focus is coming to connecting those dots for users.

right...but that's not considering the fact that many people looking for shorts ARE NOT looking for longs. So when you serve them a long and they click off it or watch 10 seconds of it, it messes up the numbers which are used to drive the algorythms.... so i hope they are also looking at that. I believe this is the right direction but i see alot of oversights in it so far.

youtube you can solve this question by adding the option for people to op out of shorts or longform being suggested in subbox and suggestions on a per channel basis

I started with shorts re-purposed from my long-form content late last year and it exploded but attracts a much wider audience including lots that aren't interested in my long-form vids (I know from the demographic). Initially, that had no effect on my long-form but, almost exactly when the first "bridge" was announced by Todd my long-form absolutely tanked and has been going down ever since while my shorts are still mostly doing very well. When I look at my Audience for long-form it's almost only subscribers or returning viewers watching and very little new audience. My content has overall improved and my audience says so in comments too plus retention is up and CTR is the same or better on most videos but what I suspect is that RU-vid is testing the videos out based on my shorts audience and not having much success so then stops showing it to a new audience. My shorts audience is just way too different even though it's exactly the same content re-purposed. I am stuck with it now, wish I had done two channels. I contemplated deleting all the shorts and rebuilding my channel but I will wait to see what revenue they bring from the first of Feb. In general, I regret doing shorts as I am very sure it's no coincidence my long-form completely tanked just as the shorts bridge was built and my shorts took off. It's sad because I put so much effort into each video. Many many hours filming and editing. Hopefully you can pass this onto the YT team and let them actually look at my channel analytics and see for themselves. I am basing this on the data I see. Also, my long-form analytics are now buried among the millions of shorts views so I can't see any overall audience data or anything properly just for long-form. I wish it would just be totally split and have all the analytics available for each content type.

I decided to just do everything on 1 channel last year. The first few months were rough but it's much better these days

It seems the edit into short feature has some shortcomings like lesser quality than the video, that it doesn’t translate over as well? - are there any plans to tweak it over time?

I use shorts to promote my new videos, should I release my shorts, before, after or at the same time as the video?

for me the best is to split the videos and shorts on two different channels because my "horror for kids" format is very specific and has a specific niche while the shorts aim to make you seen by a general audience and many times damage formats like mine by blocking the growth of long videos, I speak from experience and direct tests, in fact I have removed shorts even with millions of visuals from my main channel in order to make it recover and out of nowhere it has recovered many views in the long format.

What can the negatives be of just uploading long-format and shorts on only one channel? Why bother with an extra channel??

I wish I could prevent shorts from showing up at all! Don’t like them! As a premium subscriber I wish there was a setting to turn them off. If you have separate channel for shorts that’s great, I wouldn’t subscribe to it. 😊

I thiught I needed to create distinct style with my Shorts, so they're insanely fast-paced compared to my longform. Now, I have 200k zombie subscribers who won't watch my longform.

I don’t fully agree with this. My channel started off as shorts and we got tons of engagement. When we started doing long gameplays, videos only average a few hundred views. I do agree that if you started off long form and gained a strong audience, sure, make some shorts too. But I have seen that my shorts audience could care less about my long gameplays. 😢

I see exactly what you're doing and I just have to say you're not getting the zoomers and alphas off of Tik-Tok and onto RU-vid like this and it's hilarious you ever thought you could. RU-vid is too cold and corporate for them. It's not trendy at all and you're basically doing the "how do you do fellow kids" bit with this. RU-vid started sawing those edges off in the 2000s and they were gone by the mid 2010s.
