Interview 1 of 7 conducted for my PhD research looking at the development of 20th Century Belfast and the formation of Urban Identity. This one concerns the Sailortown area of Belfast, a thriving civic quarter which was decimated by the motorway plans of the 1960s. Community activists and former Sailortown residents George eagleson and Paul McLaughlin discuss what happened to the area.
This film includes excerpts from the following documentaries -
-'Tomorrow's Road' (BBC 1972)
- 'Goodbye Divis' (1987)
- 'The Lost City of Craigavon' (BBC 2007)
- 'The High Life' (BBC 2011)

Well done Andrew for capturing this important piece of local history before it was lost.

Thanks Lads. Watching this reminds me of my home city of Liverpool. It was very similar there too. I grew up just off the Dock Road and we also had sailors from all countries in our area, my own family were merchant seamen and then they worked on the Docks when they gave up the sea. My own Father served in the North Atlantic Convoys up to Murmansk and Archangel in Russia. Belfast has a very proud sailor history, just like us. Belfast has also been like a second home to me, over the years. A Lovely city full of Lovely people.😎👍

Great bit of local history ....Interesting video. I remember Dock Street well, before the troubles started. Haven't been back to Belfast in 40 years and probably won't be going. Likely I wouldn't recognize the place anyway and people, being a product of their environment, might be a little changed. Knock the character out of a town and you'll knock a little of the character out of the people!

Is there a public contact for any of these 2 men featured in the film?

My mum's family Gordon lived generations in this area. They were all married and children christened in sinclair seaman. My parents were married there I was christened there but once the troubles broke out we moved to a local church. Does anyone know if the church retains old records as I was looking into family history?

Hi Janet, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, St.Joe's would not have any records, it was a derelict shell for a number of years before being redeveloped as a community centre recently. You could try St Patricks on Donegal Street as I'm sure parish records would have been kept by the catholic church.

@@janetmcgowan1181 Apologies, I thought you were asking about St Joe's. Certainly worthwhile contacting Sinclair Seamen's. I would think that if they don't have records they could certainly point you in the right direction. Glad you and your dad enjoyed the video!
