Mr McMahon at 25:01 speaks with great wisdom and compassion. Can you imagine the same thing happening to you at his age and yet he handles the situation with grace and a complete lack of self-pity. Only that there were more like him.

Why you only have 2 likes is beyond me !! You encapsulate the cure by referring readers to him. His words and attitude could 'cure' ills & thoughts of retaliation, in so many similarly based revenge attacks anywhere in our world! I'm glad of your comments anyway.

Great channel, great contribution, it's a great reminder of what we do not want to see happen ever again. We should not and will not forgot the past but we will never move forward by focusing on the wrongs of the past. As one man said in this film , Education and Integration is the only solution. There are many fantastic people both Catholic and Protestant in Belfast, now is their time to be heard.

800 years of this hatred. If neither is obviously going to triumph over the other then it's time to learn to live with one another in peace. There is NO other way. For those who have lived a lifetime in bitterness and hatred, has it become your wish to condemn future generations of Irish to live such a depressing life as well?

"When we were in Ballymurphy, we had those people really fed up with us; terrified, really. After every shooting we'd order 1,500 house searches. 1,500. Skiing or mountain climbing has got nothing on a cordon and search when you're kicking old Snodgrass out of bed at 4 in the morning and going through his house. It really makes people think." -remembrances of a 2 PARA Cpl. Civilians are a different matter, but I'm hard pressed to find a more destabilizing, harmful and biased actor in the entire fiasco of the Troubles than the Parachute Regiments. They created nothing but new IRA members and Catholic civilian corpses wherever they went, and were a drastic net negative for the cause they hamfistedly attempted to intervene for.

Truth & Justice Really, when 50,000 people die in a period of a mere 30 years that is a full on war, not an occasional occurrence of violence. And, I had visited many times during the Troubles, I'm not even old enough to have been there in the early years but in the early 90's it was terrible still. Bombings, Rocks being thrown daily, people being shot dead in the streets. I was even there during September of 2001 when I saw pre-school girls from Holy Cross crying and running away from a bunch of Protestant scum who were throwing rocks at them.
@JacobSnell1998
@JacobSnell1998 8 лет назад
Truth & Justice I did not delete it. And I re-read my comment, I meant to write when 50,000 are injured, not killed. So what I meant to say when 50,000 are injured, in thirty years that is a war. And you are not really going to believe it was really only 3,600 that were killed are you? The PIRA killed well over 5000 alone.
@JacobSnell1998
@JacobSnell1998 8 лет назад
1) No need to get snappy with me. 2) Like I said, I meant to say 50,000 were injured, which is a fact. 3) The 3600 didn't count in many deaths that occurred because of Irish Republic terrorists groups. 4) No, I was born in the US and then at 17 I left for seminary to become a priest, and moved to France where the SSPX had accepted me. After a year, I left, moved to England and began working for a priest along with a nun. He many times sent me to Ireland on business and I spend much time in the Irish Republic but did many times have to work in Northern Ireland (mainly Belfast and Dungannon). During the time I would serve the faithful there, Protestants would see my cassock and throw food at me. The tension was horrible, and many times I saw acts of violence.

@thomasgangsta in 1960s the Irish Army couldn't fight anything as they were so run down,basically a spent force, the Loyalist would run rings round them in no time ! RUC overwhelmed, it would have been slaughter on the scale of Bosnia, that was prevented by the British Army.

stuart parkinson Not during the troubles anyway 1969-1999 it was headlines in England IRA started bombing in N.I in 69 followed by the loyalist UVF and UDA basically if IRA bomb Protestant area UVF would bomb Catholic area went on and on it wasn't until 72 that IRA bombed England.
@davidcoultous2790
@davidcoultous2790 7 лет назад
The 'IRA' bombings in '69 were in fact UVF false flag bombings. The UVF (formed in '66) sought to discredit the civil rights movement, and end the reforms being made by the O'Neil administration, by leading people to believe the IRA was carrying out a bombing campaign, and that this was all part and parcel of what was happening in the late 60s. The bombings weakened O'Neill to the point where he was forced to resign. The bombings convinced the unionist/loyalist community that they were facing an IRA insurrection (they already believed the civil rights movement was a Republican Trojan Horse). This was a major factor in the vehemence of the Aug 69 Belfast riots when loyalist mobs burned out entire Catholic streets, and thousands of people were displaced from their homes. It was in response to this violence that the IRA remobilised, with the more militant members splitting off to form the Provisional IRA in Dec 69, to take a more 'proactive' role in events. They started 'defensive' operations in early '70, moving to a full insurrection against the security forces by '71. The UDA formed in response to the upswing in Republican violence. (The UVF had formed in 66 after Easter Rising 50th anniversary celebrations convinced them a Republican campaign was on its way).

Séamus Mallon said in 1998 that the Good Friday Agreement is Sunningdale for slow learners and yet it seems that Sunningdale was a treaty for slow learners even then based on what most people on this clip said. Even in 1969 the people wanted an intergrated education system and the removal of ghettos with integrated housing. How sad that it's taken until now to even start gaining those objectives. Why did it take so long? We must all be so thick!

No arrests either.....for... The protestant families burned out of their homes in Thistle Court, Duncairn Gardens or Farringdon Gardens.......nor for the protestant families ethnically cleansed from the border counties in the 80s......or the 40,000 protestants forced out of Ireland in the space of 3 years after partition.

They were correct, that extremism with the lack of direction from the British government made the place a war zone. The UK government wasn't really going to make the place equal, it was in the interest of the history of occupation. Now the protestants are British or cling onto that identity.

I agree with a lot of what this young fella and girl are saying at the beginning. But, can someone show me any footage of the actual assault on Bombay Street? Even in 1969, if a whole street was being burnt out, then the tv cameras would have been on hand. I have seen footage of people leaving houses unhindered. But then that could have been any street in Belfast. Protestant or Catholic. Correct me if I'm wrong, but was Bombay Street the only street to have been attacked by 'The Other Side'?

Ps, It's just a report though, and not an actual full public inquiry, so some of the evidence given cannot be verified as being 100% reliable. The whole sentiment throughout my messages however was denounce those who had supported paramilitary groups on the messageboard for this video link. In what way are they worse than terrorists, how could that ever be seen as being 'fact'? Surely it's easier to hold the British Army accountable for their actions than the paramilitaries which operate without their face on show. If you look at the statistics, in Northern Ireland the IRA killed more people than any other paramilitary force or the British Army, so by what yardstick do you use when measuring the severity of 'terrorists'?

@skoi87 the UDA was not formed till the 70s the UVF was the first active Loyalist Paramilitary organisation. The first recorded Loyalist 'hit' was McGircs bar .. To dynamitesout, I live in a Manchester thats a lot closer to NI than NH! And If a bomb ripped your city apart, as it did mine not so many years ago...im pretty sure you would have a different opinion on the situation...although im also pretty sure that would never happen in sleepy NH! And just for the record Im from a proud Irish catholic family living very happily in Manchester, England....And the sad reality for you my friend is this...you really hav`nt got a clue what its all about. Sad
