+RideRedRacer yeah I noticed that after I posted. 40k is a big sum which I wouldn't see anyone paying but if he wouldn't sell for less I don't know why there was an offers accepted feature?

+N64 Glenn Plant It's not just the cost of the individual games that you have to consider. There is also all the time and effort that goes into completing a collection like this. That is what the premium price is for.

+Dan Xepha I can see what you're saying but the n64 is quite an easy console to collect for and for even half this amount of money and a few months it would be achievable I think. With this being a North American only collection there's only a few games which would cause big problems finding a cib copy such as sculptors cut and iss2000

it's just Pat selling under an assumed name on Ebay. He has a secret switch that turns a wall around, he activates after every cupodcast when Ian leaves and goes "Ahhh, soon, my pretties, soon..."

I don't really feel like this even needs to be commented on. It's not really any of our business why they collected these games or why they've planned to sell them. They're not going to get $40,000 but if you're going to sell something like this online it would be stupid to not shoot for the moon and see what kind of offers come in.
@SeekerLancer
@SeekerLancer 9 лет назад
***** I've followed the podcast since it started I know the score. The bubble will pop when it pops. But it's getting tiresome hearing the complaints for years from the same collectors who helped inflate the bubble in the first place.

***** Clever, except I'm referring to the discussion of absurdly priced eBay auctions. I'm sharing an opinion on the subject of doing so. I think we've pretty much exhausted what can be said about inflated online prices over the years. I mean really, was it so totally necessary to be a random snark?

This video aged like a fine milk😅 now Sculptor's Cut alone goes for about 10k. I'd be enthralled to get the entire N64 library for 40k, not that I have that kind of spending money but it's easily worth that if everything is in good condition and most all of the games have all the original inserts and whatnot. I literally laughed out loud when they implied that Brunswick Circuit Bowling is worth $5. Complete and in good condition on eBay, it easily goes for $150 - $180. Either I really got into the collecting game a little too late or these guys were high on their own farts.

+drud 1995 I agree, ive never understood the mentally to go for full sets or for sealed games, waste of space, waste of time hunting the games down, waste of money, they will sit on a shelf never to be played for what? Decoration? Conversational piece? A sense of identity? To relieve some kind of ocd anxiety? "Bragging rights"? Just seems mental to me but each to their own i guess...

+drud 1995 Agreed. I have a small collection of games, only 45 as of now.(across 5 systems). And I'm totally satisfied with it :) I only buy games that I ADORE playing and that I consider elite. Collection is growing slooooowly, and I wouldn't want it any other way!
@SXGi1b0
@SXGi1b0 9 лет назад
+FinalBaton Quality over Quantity is def the way to go, no one has time to play every game in a collection to 100% completition so it doesn't make sense to spend your valuable time on anything but the best experiences and AAA titles that are socially relevant and reputable. Like I said I don't understand the mentality to pick up barbie games and dancing/singing titles just to have a complete set when theres no intention to play them, waste of space, waste of money, imo an embarrassment to have some titles like that in a collection.

I sold my resealed-by-Blockbuster Video Transformers Beast Wars Transmetals and two sealed copies of Conker's Bad Fur Day earlier this year. I paid less than $7.50 for each. I sold many other sealed N64 games and found out that some of my sealed controllers were worth almost $600. I think N64 collecting is further along than you think. I also have a cube of six sealed The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest GameCube bonus discs sealed together into a shipper pack that I keep getting unsolicited offered for $1,000, $5,000). GameCube is pretty far along too.

I love how these collectors are scoffing at another collectors seemingly near mint complete title collection only because they are n64 games. How many shitty games did Nintendo pump out in its day? It's still an incredible collection. is it $40k incredible? Maybe to the right buyer, but I'm not gonna discredit this persons dedication to collecting without knowing how he obtained them, and even if only to resell, why bash him for it? If someone wants the complete collection and he put in the work to get it, then leave it alone its not your concern. Just like every other American who collects with the mindset of selling it someday or passing it on to their children, they do it with value over time expectation, even if primarily for the love of the collectable.

+Ragesauce N64 is my collection platform of choice. I'd pay 3000$ max for a complete collection, 5K if mint. The only hard to get games are really Snowboard Kids 2 CIB PAL and maybe Conker's bad fur day CIB pal. If I'm being generous I'd throw Kirby 64 CIB & Ogre Battle 64 CIB, Rakuga Kids CIB and last but not least the Mystical Ninja series CIB in there.
@Ragesauce
@Ragesauce 9 лет назад
Ridiculous price or not, it's his belief of value and it's up to a buyer to determine if they want to pay for it. Flokker ur price is 5k and that's fine, but that doesn't mean they are that value. Even at base value of $60 per game like it was when they first came out, assuming they've somehow depreciated despite being a complete collection, you're still looking at $18k if you were to travel back in time, find all the games yourself going back and fourth to the store, and keeping them in great condition over the years.

+Ragesauce People need to remember that when someone makes an auction like this, they want to sell all the games for what they are worth, plus a "finders" fee type of thing. They probably spent a long time finding rally nice boxed games, so the collection overall is worth more to them than the sum of the parts. In the end, it is only worth what someone will pay.

@whattheheck1000
@whattheheck1000 9 лет назад
+John Jalas Prices of retro games, pre-2008: Followed supply and demand, common stuff was cheap and rare stuff was pricey but obtainable with some effort. Prices of retro games, 2008-2011: Got a bit more expensive, this can be called the "overpriced, but not crazy" era. Prices of retro games, 2012-present: Stupid bullshit. Even common games cost a fair chunk of change now. Common SNES games sometimes cost as much as new PS4 games, for example. And good luck finding anything Nintendo boxed for under $20. Hell, some of the games I got back in '06/07 for $20-40 are now worth triple digits. WTF? If it was worth $20-40 nine years ago, it would be getting scarcer plus inflation, but that might account for a 50% rise in price, maybe $35-55. October 15, 2015 11:09 pm

devilmikey00 If money was no object to someone and they're willing to pay 10,000 for it all then fair play to them. But yes, it would be absolute lunacy to pay any amount higher than that. As for me, I could never do something like that. Buy a complete collection in one go. Sure, I like to collect but that would take the enjoyment out of it for me as a hobby. Credibility check - both razor scooter and brunswick bowling on 64 are both worth over $30 bucks each just for the cartridge. Complete over $50 each easily. They were joking they are both $5 bucks). @kylev.1163
@kylev.1163 6 лет назад
It sold for that price too. Here is the thing about flipping and selling. If the flipper makes a quick buck, then good for them. They reached their goal of not only completing a collection, but profiting off of it; which I think for alot of collectors is the ultimate goal in the long run, just not so soon after the end of a consoles life span. Sure it might be weird, but in the end, someone who is WAY more passionate about the collection purchased it for their enjoyment to have spent that kind of money on it. Say what you want, but it isn't a bad idea. N64 too is one of the easier systems to collect a full library for. Some exclusives are elusive for just the cartridge alone. But I'd say I'd rather have someone more passionate about collecting also owning those elusive titles than some flipper trying to make a quick buck. The exclusive and elusive titles get destroyed too fast by swapping owners all the time.

it sold, best offer was accepted. You guys need to realize that the generation that grew up with the N64 we're now adults to. So while N64 may not have been that long ago to you, it was an entire childhood ago for us. What happened with NES and SNES games in the 90's is now going to start happening with N64. About a year ago someone put up the box to an N64 on Ebay. It was the box for the Toys R Us special edition with the lime green controller (the version I own fyi). Just the empty box with the packing material sold for over $100. The original smash bros goes for over $50 loose and over $100 boxed. The prices are on the rise.

+David Maglioli I mostly grew up with the Snes, Genesis and then later the N64. I think that Pat and Ian don't like the N64 all that much. I also recalled Ian saying that "the Snes library does nothing for me." The Nes is a fantastic system that I got to experience later ( I had only played Mario, Zelda, and Megaman at my cousins' place), but I see a lot of people who tend to somewhat overlook anything that isn't on the original NES. To me the golden age of video games will always be the Nes, master sytem, PC-Engine, Genesis and Snes; not the Nes alone. The N64 is a fantastic system that broke grounds and defied some of the conventions established by the aforementioned golden age. That's why is an interesting system to collect. I That being said, I like both Pat and Ian and their opinion about video game is always interesting.

Currently the most valuable N64 title is Starcraft 64. Boxed with manual you'd be looking at around $300-$500 then down from there you have titlles like Sculptures Cut, Conkers, Mario Party 3, Bomberman Second Attack and Ogre Battle 64 which likely only average at around $200 complete boxed. There are a few of the really popular titles like your Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time etc that boxed right up at the highest end could be like $200 complete boxed but that's only at the right time really. For an entire collection boxed i'd say $15k is about right. There are only like 10-15 titles at a stretch that are worth over $100 boxed. Then there's a steep decline as well most you'd be lucky to get $10 for.

+CarozQH I don't know Pat really "hates" the N64, maybe just not too interested. Pat of course is a collector, and if I'm remembering correctly when he showed of his collection of everything gaming in a video series, he mentioned the point that N64 is one of those system that doesn't display well, since there are no title labels on the ends of the carts. The only way an N64 collection would look good is if you had them all in box. You can't line loose N64 games on a shelf as it will just be a bunch of grey stripes with the occasional different colored stripe for the unusual colored carts. The only way you would know how what game it is, is buy pulling it out to look at the front of it. That is where the NES and SNES beat the N64 when collecting, the games from those two systems display great.

xsilentbulletsx Yeah I actually started working on a complete N64 set myself once, until I realized I had two drawers full of cartridges, half of which I never was going to play. I like buying lots, but I just sell off the stuff I don't want. Sometimes I even come out ahead.

@FireMrshlBill

I only buy N64 games that have the box in a decent condition. Not because I am a snooty collector, but just that I kept mine in the boxes and in decent condition, so I want games that I buy to match that. I never got why people threw boxes away. It enjoyed the art as well as the protection from dust for my games. Plus I keep boxes to anything that may be worth money in the future. I understood that as a kid. Still, I wouldn't pay more than $1,500 for this (my personal value for it, not what I think market value is).

it's a rom in a cart, same thing as a rom with a original cart, just that instead of paying like $5,000,000,000 to some scumbag reseller for just one game and making it harder for someone to get the game =b I want to play game on original hardware without the problems that emulation has but I'm also not going to play like $60 for smash 64, $50 for paper mario, and like 40 40 50 for the 3 mario party 64 games. when I can just get the everdrive and it's the same thing. same controller, s-video on crt, and no emulation problems.
@ORDER4STU
@ORDER4STU 9 лет назад
***** My point was it's not the authentic hardware. A flash cart is not made by nintendo, nor was it made in the time when the N64 was the newest nintendo system. I'm not saying that owning a flash cart is less convenient or anything, but it's not original hardware.

I'd do this. On the sellers' side, I'd take a pot shot at the market to see if somebody is lazy/rich enough to pay and if somebody buys I'd just start over. If not, no loss - I wouldn't mind keeping them. On the buyer's side, I'd buy them if I felt lazy and had a large enough disposable income laying around. So yes, the mindset works for me and it seems quite natural. I suppose we all have a slightly different perception.

The price is arbitrary, you don't want to go to low and give it away, as time and effort has went in to this. And like the convenience store which charges more for a Coke, that's what you're playing for here is convenience, or he just wanted to show it off to the world and have people talking about? Maybe?

That's the problem with the N64: it has a handful of instant classics (mostly from Nintendo and Rare), a handful of interesting exclusives, and then a bunch of crap. It's a great system for a small collection of terrific games, but a complete collection really isn't going to be worth much, and I can't see how it would be desirable.

Can't judge the price, but wanted to mention: overe here in europe N64 games often go for a lot more than NES games. Our local store tries to charge about 70 USD for Waverace 64 (lose) for example. So while not a lot people collect over here we have stupid high rip-off prices at the same time. Weird.

Take it that's complete US Collection or something right? Because the full line up of N64 games across all regions is just under 400, even if you include the few 64DD games or not. It's certainly a complete set I want to attempt someday, being at just under 150, since it's more possible then say the NES or PS2 complete library in terms of numbers, but boxed or even at that price? That's 2 things I'll never have... XD

The only box copy N64 game I have is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Not an amazing box, as they Ian said, "Flimsy as hell." Now, in Amiibo news(which I know there are quite of people on here that love to hear about them), the Best Buy I live near finally got restocked with Amiibo, even ones that had been exclusive to other stores(Shulk, I believe he was a GameStop exclusive). My friend told me about it and I went the next day(as he said it should be impossible for them to run out in less than 24hrs). He was right. I wanted Marth and one side of the stand was filled with Marth, like 30 of them at least. I also got Little Mac, since it looked like there were fewer of him. As for what others they had, Fox, Greninja, Lucario, Dark Pit, Captain Falcon, and that is all I can remember, but I know they had more. So if you live near a Best Buy, and you wanted any of those, then you might check. They also said they might be getting more Meta Knights in sometime later. Not that it would do much good if there was a scalper team, but they are at least only limiting the purchase of three copies of each Amiiboo.

I'm going for a boxed 64 set and yeah getting the boxes in good shape is a bitch. I figured I can play the crap out of them for 15 or 20 years then maybe sell them. I'm not collecting to sell, but I figure eventually it may happen. $40,000 is crazy, I'd say max could be $10,000, and that's only if you included the grey and box variants. You could try for a bit more by saying it could save the person the time collecting it all, but still anything past $10,000 to me is nuts.

i think people over look what kind of person would actually spend 40,000 on video games. these people are people like pat, serious collectors with massive gaming collections, and a wealth of knowledge. the problem is these same people can not be fooled into over paying, they most likely rarely ever pay full value. they are too dedicated, to budget conscious and too used to waiting it out to find a deal.

40K? That's pretty mental. The N64 obviously has some great games like Mario 64, Zelda, Pokemon Stadium etc but the majority of the games aren't really worth playing again because they're disposable sports games or crappy licensed games. It isn't like the NES or SNES library where there are hundreds of awesome original games.

I collect boxed Amiga games, and saw a few months back on ebay UK that somebody was listing a huge collection (pics showed racks and racks of boxed Amiga games on shelves), and I think it was around £20k-£30k which would be easily $45,000! The auction went, so maybe someone got it or offered a best offer, but yeah, to someone that knows some games you've just got to sit and wait and pick your biddings, it just looks werid. And yet these listings do come (remember earlier in the yeah on ebay UK a complete PAL Dreamcast collection). I've no idea about N64, but agree that the boxes being good or even there in the first place is something unique yet no real niche market.
