Tired of that dead wobbly N64 controller stick? Don't want to suffer with one of those after market stick replacements? Well here's a solution for you. You can keep you OEM internals of the controller stick, like the little circuit board inside by replacing only 3 plastic components inside. After adding some silicone grease to all the rubbing parts, put it back together and its as good as new. If your actual stick plastic piece is no good, there are also replacements for those. Super affordable parts! I am not sponsored BTW Just a very satisfied customer.

This site has replacement parts for a lot of retro gaming paraphernalia.
If you are into restoring retro gaming equipment, this is a must see site. There are a few other RU-vid folks that have used them and I certainly have purchased from them. Trustworthy would be a perfect word to describe them.
There is also a livestream available where I completely clean out the controller. This video footage is from that livestream.

i have not watched the whole vid much but thank you for showing viewers how to repair a n64 controller natoriously known stick wobble. i only just last week have learned what physically causes this and how to fix it. Vids like this one shows it is posable to fix a bad joystick pretty budget friendly instead of throwing out the old joystick to be forgotten about.

I NEEDED this video. The new parts are great BUT the hole in the bowl for holding one of the gears is too small on all 3 of my sets. A lil boring with a P5 bit did the trick! Pro tip for anyone else who might read this. Check if you need to grind plastic away anywhere BEFORE you start slathering lube everywhere. Or don't, I'm not here to kink-shame anybody

Best fix yet! I was about to buy a loose stick lot and go with the Epoxy method but this seems way better and cheaper.

It is, I replaced mine with the replacement parts and the analog stick literally feels like it's fresh out the factory, smooth and tight like it's 1996 again

I could only find the gears in Australia (ordering from Kitsch Bent amounted to large shipping fees) turns out it's pretty good without the bowl replacement! Unless the stick is extremely limp, 9 times out of 10 the bowl replacement is unnecessary :)

nice guide, Im glad you showed the areas that need plastic flashing removed, especially when you showed @4:18 that area is debatably more important than the others. Just wondering if you can help me w some info--when I go to drop the bowl in, it does not have the clearance to fit snug, the middle of the 3 pegs underneath where the new cup drops in, I have to sand the middle one down ever so slightly to avoid cup rocking on peg, and making the stick fit in there w slightly too little space. Have you ever experienced the need to sand down the middle peg when dropping in the new cup? I'm convinced they really need to tweak the part a TINY BIT, but I never did hear back from the company when asking them about this directly.

Out of all the controllers I've done, I've only ever had to use 2 bowls. The only part I remember having to "modify" was the little holes that the OEM spindles fit in. They were too snug. The general rule of thumb with all the 3rd party parts is "You'll probably have to sand part of it down somewhere to get it to fit/act right" :(

Thanks so much for the video! I plan to overhaul my 4 controllers soon! Did you replace the joystick as well or just the internals? In some cases is the joystick shot too or will replacing all these parts typically do the trick?
@RetroFix
@RetroFix Год назад
I've done quite a few and never needed the stick but i did have to replace a couple bowls. Mostly you'll only need x/y axis gears with some grease of course. To be safe order a few sticks and bowls, its all super affordable anyhow.

I ordered a stick, gear set, and bowl from Kitsch-Bent, yesterday. I'm not sure when they will arrive. Do you know how long on average it takes for them to ship? I chose economy shipping, btw.

Absolutely beautiful! Wondering, what are the signs that an original bowl is in bad enough shape to need replacement if you open it up and are eyeballing it? I guess I have the same question about sticks too. The gears I have a rough idea, it's when the central slot that the stick fits through is clearly unevenly wider at parts, yeah? And lastly, is silicone lube that you used the best recommended lubricant for n64 controller? Ive seen some others use lithium lube?
@RetroFix
@RetroFix 2 года назад
I am finding as I do these, the OEM stick and bowl are pretty much OK to leave there. You can compare the OEM with a replacement, If it’s just a little deeper than the replacement you’re OK but if it’s really deep you will probably notice once you assemble everything the stick might still kinda have a looseness to it- more than the normal slight jiggle. More times than not you will only have to change the two plastic pieces “gears” and nothing else. I use silicone grease for everything and yeah I see people using white lithium. I hear stories that white lithium is for metal contact parts and isn’t exactly good for plastics in the long term so I tend to stay away from it. I might be wrong on that but I’ll tell ya, I use silicone on everything and have never ran into any issues.

@@RetroFix hey, thanks so much for the reply. All noted for when I can get the parts to fix mine up. Sadly kitsch-bent was sick recently so shut down the shop. Wishing him and his family good health in the meantime. I also wanted to say that other parts of your vid were excellent. Like how you showed the exact spot on the bowl tab opening (i guess you could call it that) to make it a little wider. And key spots to remove "flash" (mold lines). Good stuff!

Hey thank you for the compliments, that means the world to me! I always try and answer everyone. The supplier has been “temporarily closed” for quite a while now. That’s not a good sign… I don’t know of anyone else who sells those parts. Big bummer! Hope their okay as well.

store.kitsch-bent.com may send international but I’m not sure. If you look anywhere else, They call them gears so use that in your search terms. Good luck!

In most cases do stick have to be replaced also?
@RetroFix
@RetroFix 3 месяца назад
If the stick isn't all messed up then theres no need. Out of around 20 controllers that I fixed up, zero needed stick replacing. Mainly it's the 2 gears and occasionally the bowl needs replacing.

@@RetroFix why claim to keep it all OEM in the title and in description then? Kitsch bent stick & gears is far from the quality a mint OEM would be. And the kb parts is literally a 3rd party after market stick replacement
@RetroFix
@RetroFix 10 месяцев назад
@@aronPHUN there's 2 plastic gears that are changed out. All the other parts, including the little motherboard stay inside. Here, call it refurbished OEM then if keeps you up at night. There, that better? 1000 times better then the 3rd party stick modules that you sling.
