As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases from links posted in my description & comments section. The Nintendo 64 original controller has a flaw in that the analogue stick wears away and causes it to go limp and not work as well as it originally did new. There have been plenty of options, but today we are going to replace just the parts that are prone to wearing with new close to OEM parts from Kitsch-Bent and see how the controller performs!

Fixed four of my childhood controllers this way earlier this year. The controllers were so bad that on two of them you couldn't move at full speed, no matter how hard you pressed on the stick. Took a lot of tinkering, but after a while with these parts I was able to get all four feeling pretty much BRAND NEW! Definitely worth it and I definitely recommend this! It's cheap and effective.

I'm legitimately surprised I never noticed this video. I really like this, with the Steel Sticks being so hard to get and also crazy expensive this kind of kit can be very nice if you need good readily available replacement parts on the cheap. Sure they're still made of plastic, but they're brand new and the prices speak for themselves. I'll probably grab some myself, my personal N64 controller isn't too bad yet but having parts ready to go sounds nice if and when my N64 stick does eventually fail. Also nice to have the parts around when I find extra controllers that have broken sticks, nothing feels better than getting a great deal on broken controllers you know you can fix. :)

great video. I bought these parts a little over a year ago and had the same exact issue you did. Stick wouldn't be exactly centered and would get that Mario creeping effect. It would also get stuck in some corners. I didn't have a file small enough to try anything so I just put it together thinking it would eventually wear in properly. I never did go back to it lol. If you’re using dielectic grease, there’s actually no risk of damage occurring to the electrical components if the grease makes contact with them. Only downside of using too much would be, like you said, grease coming out of the controller and making the rest of it greasy.

Kitsch Bent makes a good replacement gear and bowl, but in my experience the stick is just a *tiny* bit too big, to the point where the corners on sticks I've replaced often don't work right unless you *really* push. I tried 3 different sticks before I finally gave up and just started re-using the grey ones in my repairs. I'd get the gears and bowl from them, but just re-use the stock stick.
@cxx23
@cxx23 2 года назад
Sorry that this is so old, but I was curious. In your experience, did you still get a tighter stick by keeping the original grey stick and replacing the gears and bowl?
@davidlangston8160

@@cxx23 I did this and it definitely made it tighter, just not brand new perfection. Also not sure if mine still has flashing on it since its a bit crunchy sounding but controls just fine
@cxx23
@cxx23 2 года назад
@@davidlangston8160 Since my comment, I've replaced the sticks on 3 controllers using these parts. I used all 3 parts though, and I have no issue with any directional movement on any of my 3 controllers. I did run into the issue where the stick gets stuck in 2 diagonal directions, but I found an easy fix. (Get it stuck, and then loosen the single screw that holds the stick housing together slowly until the stick snaps back to center.) In hindsight, I definitely recommend using all 3 replacement components, to eliminate any gaps that will remain if you keep your worn out parts. Getting the housing back together correctly is pretty tricky, so that may be why you ran into those issues as well. Any of the gears could be slightly off and it won't work right. Could be that the method that fixed my diagonal issue might help with your issue.

The spring will be pushing out while you remove the first screw so you need to hold it in place to avoid stripping the plastic threading. You can see that it was done incorrectly in the this video from all the plastic dust coming from that first hole. Good luck!

The gamecube-styled ones are horrible, with extreme sensitivity making most games unplayable. The white powder is from the plastic parts grinding. If you want a replacement with the same functuonality of an original controller, you're probably best off getting a "Sharpshooter", an optical stick, but then you'll need to grease it up since the plastic grinding will be an issue eventually. Thankfully, there are a lot of tutorials on how to maintain and lubricate the joysticks, if you don't already know how to do it :)

I tried this myself, it worked nicely without the green chip part in the stick, but when I add the chip, the stick gets quite stuck, not sure why this happens

The smaller screws are not phillips, they are posidrive and you can strip them if you use a phillips
@Madlittlepixel
@Madlittlepixel 9 месяцев назад
I dont know what a posidrive screw is, but the n64 doesnt have pozidriv screws in it or the controller.

I ordered the same exact thing but the gears would not turn freely in the Kitsch ball as they would in the original one!!! That causes the stick to get stuck on the edges and not return to the center. Any ideas how to fix that ?

I know this is a old comment, but for me it was the the bowl I had to shave a good amount more then people said where the 2 gears are on the side of the bowl.

Some parts you need are always sold out at Kitch Bent unfortunately. But as I understand all are not very good, 3rd party replacement stick, these parts, 3rd party joystick, that is a pity!

I few years ago I came across 2 controllers pretty much brand new, I haven't used them since from fear of wearing the parts down. I swear I've tried EVERY kind of grease I could buy (lithium, silicone, graphite'd, even plain 3 in 1 oil), but all of them seem to just... Be pushed to the sides leaving the bowl and gears almost grease free, only from a few hours of use. Any long lasting grease recommended?

that's a bummer man, and a useful bit of feedback, I've got a couple of decent controllers with original sticks in good shape and am hoping to just lube em up to help make em last rather than starting a fresh w/non-original parts. Have you tried/heard of joystick butter? I haven't researched it but was what another youtuber used in one of his vids. Don't know if it was made for N64 specifically or other controllers too (if there are any out there that for some reason require it) but if not, would hope you could try this and it'll work for yours. If you do, defo report back! I will look out for the issue you mention if I end up using it

High-viscosity silicone oil from Evike. I originally bought it to lube my airsoft guns, but I use it for everything now, lol.

But isn't this new parts plastic too? Which means, 3 or 4 sessions of Mario Party, the stick will start to fumble and get loose again... I prefer the SteelStick64 solution, the only problem is to put your hands in one, but if you can, it's the definitive final solution. Those gamecube like are good, but they doesn't work properly with shooter games, specially GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, which is a big no no, you're loosing two of the best games in the n64 library.
