Another perfect routine by an older, significantly taller Nadia (compared to 76). Gymnastics is divided into a pre-Nadia era dominated by the Soviet Union, and the post-Nadia era which followed the 76 Olympics and saw gymnastics becoming one of the most popular Olympic sports as young girls in Europe and USA, inspired by Nadia's perfect performances, joined newly formed gymnastic academies across the USA and western Europe. Before anyone rushes to compare this performance to recent routines, keep in mind that this is the compulsory routine that all gymnasts had to perform on first day of team competition and event qualification. Difficulty level is the same for all gymnasts so scoring here is focused on technique, form, and execution and the score received will carry over to all finals. In addition, the beam itself was different than today's apparatus - it was not sprung to help with tumbles as it is today and had no leather or suede cover to prevent slipperiness.
@@marmota1425 This was a compulsory beam routine from the preliminaries. The exercise was the same for all the gymnasts. The judges judged the execution of the compulsory elements and not the difficulty.
Yeah it would be interesting to see both gymnastics compulsories and figure skating figures again. Both require more control and finesse and would probably make the sport better. But they wouldn’t because it makes competitions too long and isn’t as fun for the public to watch.
Unlike Montreal crowd who adored Nadia, just like the rest of the world, the Moscow crowd were very hostile toward Nadia. At 1.04 there was someone from the crowd who shouted: Fall !(in Russian) and others laughed. No wonder Nadia did not want to compete again in Moscow in the 1981 Worlds saying she did not feel comfortable there.
I was born in late 1978, so by the time i was old enough to appreciate gymnastics, Nadia's carrer was over, but she was my inspiration for becoming a gymnast. I must have watched a show on her or reruns of her in the Olympics as a 5 or 6 year old. It was like magic to me. She was so incredible! I wanted to be just like Nadia. She inspired so many people just like me. In my opinion this woman is the GOAT.
I was 8 years old when Nadia took the Olympics in Montreal by storm. Back then we did'nt have electricity in the house and did not have a television set until about 2 or 3 years later. I still recall grade school teacher telling us stories in class about how she made Olympic history by getting perfect scores and It's only now that I'm able to watch how she did it on RU-vid. Thank you so much for posting these awesome videos!!!
@@denisejasovich9587 She did write that they didn't have electricity. But (refering to Linda) I wouldn't assume Alex Ruperto Bertillo was living in Canada back then. Could have been livving in romania for example.
@@catalintheodor8065 *Olga Korbut was the revolution, way ahead of her time.* Many times judges saw her skills like circus. That's why 10s were impossible to the revolutionary Olga. In 1988 she became the first gymnast to be inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Not Nadia.
That reverse turn she does at 0:39 is actually pretty cool. Something as simple as that would be visually cool to see in any of the spins of today’s balance beam routines.
It's simple but it's flawlessly done. That's what I miss about the old compulsory routines where everyone did the same routine - you got to see who had truly mastered the techniques and who hadn't.
I remember reading about and then hearing the Russian audience yelling "fall! fall!" During Nadia's beam routine. Now we cheered for the gymnasts on the apparatus no matter what country they're from.
Nadia herself has said that that story wasn't true. The largely Soviet crowd were very respectful and cheered her on, as well as all of the other gymnasts on the floor.
@@lucatoni4509 No, it was a Bela Karolyi lie, that Nadia later refuted. She has said in interviews that the pro Soviet audience was very respectful and supportive of all of the gymnasts on the floor.
Leveza.
So much elegance, grace and class in one person. What a beautiful routine she performed.Perfect timing.Always a pleasure to watch her.She had what the present day gymnasts are missing.
She is my hero. There is no question Nadia is THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. The grace and beauty, the conviction. Little Miss Simone might have more gold but she is lacking femininity. She is good sorta. She pounds out her routine like she going a million miles an hour. No. Nadia is the greatest of all time.
You should look at Agnes Keleti. I absolutely adore Nadia, but Agnes is incredible. She's Hungarian and won her first National title in 1937, at age 16. She would've competed in the 1940 Olympics, but WW2 prevented it. She had to secretly escape to the remote countryside using false identity papers and lost years of competing in her prime. She eventually escaped the country altogether. But Agnes made it to her first Olympics in 1952 when she was 31. She won 4 medals. Like Nadia, she was groundbreaking, her control and artistry was amazing. And her record speaks for itself, I can only imagine the medals and titles she would've won had she competed all those years at the top of her game. She was still winning Olympic medals at age 35, when she took home 6 more. It's a crime she's not remembered as a gymnast. She's still alive and is 100 years old.
performance is absolutely perfect! However... Her routine is a lot, lot simpler than the routines that they do today. Today's gymnasts are more about athleticism. Nadia Comaneci as was more about Flo and performance and display of control
It's a compulsory routine made up of basic gymnastics skills. It's meant to be simple. The gymnasts would need to show mastery of the rudiments and Nadia was one of the very best at compulsory exercises.
EXACTLY…I just said that!!! It’s like she’s graceful and poised but she didn’t even do ONE back hand spring?! Just watch Sean Johnson perfect 10 beam performance…you can’t even compare the two! Sean Johnston does two front flips and straight into three back hand springs…That’s not even her dismount!!! Nadia was a pioneer in woman’s gymnastics but her degree of difficulty was around 1.5-2.0! Today’s is 3,4,5 points difficulty on AVERAGE!!! Johnson, Biles did 6.0 and higher!!! Come on…Nadia is just not on the same playing field as the female gymnasts have been…especially for the past 20-25 years!!!
It’s was made to be simple because that’s all that was expected from the female gymnasts at the TIME on BALANCE BEAM! Even if you look at Cathy Rigby’s performance in 1970 on beam…she’s incredible and she at least does a few front and back walkovers but she’s ALSO not doing double back flips in pike position!!! And those weren’t at compulsories!!! Yes…back handsprings and flips have been done on balance beam since 1972 but it started to get harder and much more complicated when coaches and gymnasts started adding MUCH HARDER AND HIGHER DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY in their routines! Daniela Silivas was one of the( if not very first) female gymnasts who did the first two back flips with two twists before landing on the beam!!! That move didn’t happen until Seoul in 1988!!! That’s not what Nadia is doing here and that’s not what she or ANY FEMALE gymnasts was doing on beam…at that time! It hadn’t even been tried yet until mid to late 80’s…PERIOD!!! That doesn’t mean Nadia couldn’t had done it herself but by that time she had retired!! I’m her time…gymnastics was more about fluidity and gracefulness than strength and power!!!! Today’s female gymnasts weigh WAY MORE than they did back in 70’s! Cathy Rigby weighed 84 pounds!!! Simone biles weighs 105!!! Complete difference in MUSCLE TONE!!!
I wasn't even born when Nadia was a star already, but damn, such a difference between her and the tanks they call gymnasts today. The golden age of gymnastics is gone, I am afraid.
So insulting to muscular and strong girls….and I love gymnasts of this age like Urazova, Listunova, Komova, Porgras, etc. But people want girls to starve themselves for aesthetics.
Well don't forget that when she achieved her perfect 10's at the 1976 Olympics she was only 14 years old, really still just a little girl. By 1980 she had turned 18, and naturally, she had grown a bit, as one would expect.
I am one of those who wondered why Simone Biles is considered the greatest I had see Comaneci again and again She does the first reverse back somersault slowly while Simone Biles does all the three in quick succession
So much more difficult in her 1976 performance. I feel bad for her. She grew so much when she was allowed to take a break and eat. She is thin as a rail of course for the competition. I've read that this happens a lot when women take a break from gymnastics their bodies do what they are supposed to do....Develop into women.
Her bad time was end 1977 to middle 1978,i think she had 5 weeks to prepare for strasbourg. In 1979 for the world champs she was way thinner. For me in moscow she was just absolutely perfect. I remember i was a 13 year old boy in 1980 and cried on the 2nd day when she fell off the bars. Speaking of a life long fan hey!? I remember reading that before strasbourg she was not allowed to eat for 9 days. Well the next year she kicked everyone s ass including mukhina. To this day i still think she was better than davydova in moscow, but all the scores were politically motivated.
Such a shame she couldn't repeat this perfect routine in the all-around finals. She would've defended her all-around Olympic title from 1976 had she did. I guess Nadia is human too.
Amazing performance in an Olympic Games full of tension during the Cold War and Russia always prepotenn How come nobody yelled when Shaposnikova was performing same exercise?
2 diametrically opposed styles, Simone is pure power, speed, perfection and no emotion nor feminism at all on the other hand Nadia is pure grace, artistry and poetry in motion!.Simone pose, walk and running is very masculine like and mechanical while Nadia's walk is feminine, sensual and delicate like a rose!.I might not know much about gymnastics but I know artistry and grace when I see it, that's what I see when I watch Nadia perform!!!!
