A note from Nai.
This video was taken the day after my surgery to remove my right breast in an attempt to save my life from breast cancer. It is a life experience I will carry with me always. I wanted to capture something from the most vulnerable place live and direct from my hospital bed to help others feel strong in the same position. Also the sunset was perfect. I don’t even really know the words without singing along with Curtis but they just filled my heart and were soo on point in the moment. Bender worked the chords out in like two seconds like a boss. It was filmed by my beautiful gem of a friend and manager Scott Barkham. “The Makings of You” has been such a savior to my diagnosis sanity and the first thing I wanted to sing as soon as my body could handle it. Oh Nai!!!😢😪😔 This hurts to hear. I didn't know you had breast cancer! My aunt just went through chemo and radiation therapy for her breast cancer. I pray you ( like my aunt) beats this horrible disease as you are so needed here! This is one of my favorite Curtis Mayfields song. And you have the perfect voice for this cover. That was so beautiful it made me cry. God bless you, Nai, and may God bless you with a speedy recovery and long term health. Your voice puts my soul at peace. I just had surgery a few months back, couldn't sleep, couldn't stand the drugs, so my husband told me to plug both headphones in and listen... it was my Nai/Hiatus playlist. You guys walked the hospital halls with me while I recovered, too. I wish for you to have that sort of peace during your entire HEALTHY life. Merry Christmas!

Prayers to you Nai... you will win! My best friend of 25 years is going through the same thing... She just went through 5 1/2 months of chemo and I was with her every infusion. There is something in this song, in this moment, so warm, sad, and uplifting... it's like I'm tasting what it's like to see the world through your eyes, the appreciation of the earth, imperfections and impermanence, holding it all in balance for a few minutes while the melody carries you on. The more i grow, the more i can relate when you say you feel most beautiful when you don't realize you exist as much.
