I know it wasn't healthy for your hand, but this was actually a very helpful video, especially at the end where you show the issues with the shape and structure. When watching your videos to learn, it's great to see all of your perfectly structured sets, but seeing sets that are NOT perfect is a great comparison to see what NOT to do. Thank you for being so thorough!

Yes, I also really love it when Tatyana Bugry does nails on someone who came in from a different nail tech. She's not unfairly bashing them or anything, just goes through all the issues she sees and explains why they're an issue. It's so helpful when experienced nail techs do this!

Unfortunately, proper nail prep is really uncommon in US salons. They will just "rough up" the nail with a file or arbor band and that's it. You could go to the highest rated salon in your town and they would still probably not even push back the cuticles. When I was in nail school, that's how we were taught, that cuticle care was a separate service. That's why I only ever do my own nails!
@zeekay153
@zeekay153 2 года назад
It’s like that every where unfortunately not just US…. I went to nail school too here in US and our technician taught us how to do cuticle care…. I always do it for my clients whether they ask for it or not…. It just makes the whole manicure 100 times better even if when you don’t want to have any products on your nails. I’ve been doing my own nails for 18 years never let anyone else touch my nails lol…. This was a great video ☺️

I was actually going to say this. Nail prep doesn't happen here in Australia too. Very rarely do we get a nail tech that takes the extra time to prep nails.

I second this, in the US a “manicure” is separated from an “extension” which makes no sense

Some people will find this video offensive or shaming but I think your approach was very constructive, especially because your are educating us (customers) in good practices and how a professional service/work should be. If we as customers raise the bar the salons will be motivated to improve as well. 😊

This isn’t shocking… I’ve never had a nail tech actually do my cuticles and have a hygienic work station. Last time I got acrylic, the tech used a spare nail tip to pry off the old nails. It hurt. I was bleeding. Didn’t matter to him. I only do my own nails now because of RU-vidrs like you that show us the standard we should expect

Same here girl! They blamed me for the nails breaking and that's why they had to take it completely off. Didn't care if I was bleeding either. Would charge extra to fix the broken nails that they weren't responsible for. I shouldn't have dealt with nail salons for as long as I did. I'm lucky none of my nails were not permanently damaged. It is also thanks to Anastasia and other RU-vidrs who taught me how they should be done. I am so grateful because they saved my nails! 😁❤

That happened to me once.. I went to the salon to get a refill, this was going to be my first refill on this set and then she just starting taking off my nails with a cuticle pusher .. I didn't have any bleeding but it hurt so much , I told her , she was like "thats ok, that's totally normal but its faster this way".. I didn't let her finish and asked for a different nail tech. These are salons owned by people who don't care if the tech is licensed. I heard some horror stories when I took my course. Check your local guidelines and rules for whether its a requirement for a nail tech in your city/town/county/province/state, to be licensed. Different requirements depending on where you live. Ask questions!! Where they took their course, what kind and brand of product they use. Acrylic: OPI, glitterbells, etc (EMA monomer only) Gel: en Vogue, light elegance, etc Polygel, hybrid gel, acrygel: madam glam, Naio, Suzy's (nail career education). Be careful.

Anastasia, I absolutely adore you. As an American, honesty is often seen as cruelty. When, in fact, it is just honesty. It is something that really bothers me, how we are all expected to keep our mouths shut unless we have "something nice to say". I believe that people should be as honest as possible while still being as kind as possible. You did an excellent job of being totally honest and still remaining tactful, and anyone who finds your honesty problematic probably has some truths about themselves that they would rather not face. And as always, you have provided excellent education in this video. And good for you for doing this! Lots of people would have lost that bet and lied about it!

Vietnamese owners have brought so much to the nail industry growth and exposure.. but it’s really astounding at how common place their bad habits are too.. like the crooked nail .. you learn very quickly as a client to not bother complaining.. you’re just told “that’s just how your nail grows”

When I went out to get my nails done, one time my normal nail tech (She was the sweetest person in the world, and while she wasn't perfect at the job, it gave me the chance to practice on correcting any mistakes she made.) wasn't available, and they gave me another and assured me she was lovely. Well, she was lovely. But she barely spoke, she did a decent enough job but ultimately, she was so paranoid over getting too close to my cuticle that she actually made my nails look like they were already outgrown by a week. :( I'm so glad for channels like this, that helped me learn how to do my own nails. Much as I miss my old nail tech, my fear of other people got so strong I simply couldn't go out anymore. It does make me feel accomplished when I look at a set that I've done for myself, and see the improvement I make every month.

My first time getting my nails done was because I was helping a friend who was also working with her mom at a salon. She over-filed. We used dip that has really good reviews too. (I researched after she had done the first set.) At this salon, the manager was constantly looking at what the nail techs were doing. It was a bit annoying. And they had to do the work fast, as well. Anywho, I was under the impression that because she was still learning, she wouldn't charge me, or at least give me a discount. That didn't happen. But since she was my friend, I paid the full price. Then, when one of my nails broke, she charged me for the repair. Seeing as I thought it was my fault (Now I realize it was because the nails were thin), I paid for that as well. Then, when some of the other nails started breaking for the smallest things, I paid for the second set. The second set, one of the nails started cracking at the cuticle. I sent her a picture and she pretty much blamed me for what was happening. She asked what I had done. I told her nothing, that I was being extra careful because I was still under the impression that the first time the nails started breaking was my fault. She then ignored me for a few days. Then, she messaged me something about her birthday celebration coming up (which we had talked about before, because she'd be going to a restaurant and had invited my partner and I), and then she asked when I wanted her to re-do my nails. I didn't reply until the day of her celebration, only to tell her I wouldn't be making it because I had family visiting from out of town. Long story, but this is the reason I decided to look into doing my own nails. I still use dip without extensions once in a while because I'm not used to long nails. But, from your videos I've learned so much about nail care. Even when I use just regular nail polish on the natural nails, it lasts longer than before.

Walmart is bad in general for their beauty services. When I was younger I always had rainbow colored hair, some colors never came out as intended bcuz I couldn’t get my hair past the yellow stage with bleach and I needed it white. I didn’t know about toner back then. So I went to Walmart to have them bleach it and was very clear about needing it to be white not yellow. They were all more interested in dying their own hair than mine. They all had foils in their hair. That should’ve been my first clue to not sit in the chair, but I was 17 and naive as hell. Between rinsing their own hair and applying things to their own hair and other people coming in for a trim, I had 5 different people on my head at one point or another. Even then I explained to each one what I was doing and what I needed. Long story short I paid $150 for yellow hair, for them to do the same thing I could do myself for $20. What was supposed to be sky blue turned out mostly teal, like usual. To this day I still don’t know if any one of them heard me say anything more than "I need it bleached" bcuz they all paid more attention to their self and each other than anyone in their chair.

You said she “wouldn’t stop until she finished my nails”. Did she or anyone hold you down and force you to allow her to continue to ruin your nails? There is nothing wrong with getting up and walking out with out paying in the middle of a service if they are doing a bad job. It is important to stick up for yourself and speak out instead of allowing somebody to give you a bad service and then paying for that bad service. Don’t worry about anything they might say or call you-they are trying to guilt trip you out of your hard earned cash, and it’s their own insecurity, embarrassment, issue that they are doing a bad job, not yours!

I love how professional you were with explaining how things went wrong and areas to focus on when getting nails done by a nail tech. I’m a new nail tech and speed is not my concern yet because there are much more important things to focus on when a client pays big dollars for nails that should last. I love your videos and appreciate your teachings and knowledge.

very professionally done! I'm happy that you did this nail video so others can truly see the mistakes, uncleanliness, and what was done wrong. I do my own nails and my daughters because I went a few times to these fast nail salons and unfortunately they looked like yours and the last one I went to I got a really bad infection and rings of fire. I did have pain and discomfort for 2 days that I could not use hot water when needed for cleaning I had to go to the Dr. and he even told me to stop going to those places and if I wanted nail enhancements to do my homework. Well, I went to you tube and found you and others and took some classes. Don't do anyone else but so far so good! And cheaper, well except where I HAVE to buy all these new products! LOL! Thank you for the wonderful lessons plz keep them going, God Bless

I don't know that I could find a salon in my area that isn't equal or worse compared to this. Like many said, it's why I started doing my nails at home. At first for the design but eventually realized i was exposing myself to a lot of grossness. BUT I still get my pedicures at these shops because... Tips: I love that you still ripped because she still did hard work. Even if it wasn't the best work. In Massachusetts, for services that are physical and craft-based like this, I usually do 20%. And these shops almost never let you tip on the card.

I had dozens of awful or careless low quality experiences in salons.. that on top of the extreme chemical smell, crowded parlor, and bloody mishaps have convinced me that I'm better off doing all my own nail care and sets at home. Now the only way I'll go to a salon is for a spa pedicure service while in their massage chair, and then I'll glue on whatever press on toe nails I've designed for myself. I love the freedom to change my press ons at will, reuse them, fixing a loose nail is a breeze, I can make whatever nails I want, no appointment needed, no missing side walls, no social stress or chemical overwhelm or acrylic reaction and I get way more value for my money. I'll never go back. Salon workers and owners in my opinion are a lot of the time are out to take advantage of people because their lives and finances are messy. They reek of financial desperation, regret, irritation and resentment a lot of the time in my experiences and are more concerned with hustling for fast money than for running a high quality, safe, well paid business.

Thanks so much for your kind and informative critique! It helps me do my own nails. I had a bad service once with just soak off gel on my natural nails. I usually always do my own nails now, but at this point I was so busy with work so I decided to go to a nail salon in the city by my work where I had gone once before and gotten a nice manicure. This second time turned out to be a disaster! I had just gotten a slight crack in one nail and told the nail tech about this, I usually can fix such a crack myself. But instead of suggesting what they could do and asking me what I’d like to do about it, the nail tech began working and then clipped ALL my naturally long nails short. I was so shocked so I didn’t even say anything at the time. The nail tech was also rude kept mentioning my nails were thin and that I had to eat more protein. I said My nails have always been thin type that bend since I was young. Then they suggested that gel isn’t for me and made my nails thin. Then they said that I can’t expect the gel manicure to last too long and if it came off soon, don’t come to complain to them. I told them not only do I do gel on myself all the time, but that I got a gel manicure at their own salon before and it was nice and lasted a good while. Easy to say this nail tech was super condescending. I just wanted to leave, so I was quiet until they finished my nails. I was really unhappy since I was under so much stress from work and I had just wanted a pampering salon visit which ended up anything but! The cherry on the cake was that, not only did they clip all my long nails short without asking and were rude, the gel started lifting that same day. I had to leave a bad review because it was so awful!!

Oh! I also meant to comment/ask...that place looked classy but whoa. Just whoa on the level of filth. I actually had a new client recently say as soon as she sat down, "wow! This is the cleanest place I've ever been for nails!" I think that immediately puts the client at ease. I've always felt on edge getting my nails done at a shop. It's rushed. They sometimes are finishing someone else's set and walk away from your prep to go finish their last set. They must be under so much pressure to churn out as many clients as possible. This techs dirty nail brushes and lamp and table would have immediately made me feel uncomfortable. I have learned too that a lot of those salons use MMA monomer which I can usually recognize by the smell. To me it has a dirty smell, like socks or something whereas EMA smells sweet. To me anyway. Do you happen to know or did you notice if they used MMA? Thanks for this video. Super informative and let us know if you fixed that set or let it come off and if they lifted or broke within days!

Most salons now use EMA. Even certain EMA smell really terrible, especially the more expensive monomers like CND. Try to go buy a bottle & you’ll see what i’m talking about. You can’t really tell between EMA & MMA in this case until you soak it off.

Thank you so much for your videos. They’re very informative. I rarely get my nails done professionally because of cost. I was married last year in June and that was the first time I had my nails professionally done. I went to a salon in Las Vegas. It was pricey, but everything appeared to be very clean. They also had some of the best reviews when I did my research. When I went back to Vegas for my anniversary I went to them. My hairdresser always keeps her salon space immaculate and I see why. That place is very dirty. Yikes 😳! However you gave very constructive feedback.

I went to I good reviewed nail salon in my city back home in Sweden to get a set before I moved to Canada and I loved them but thought it was slightly strange that my natural nail was showing on the side and it bugged me but I assumed it was because I had an undesirable width of my nails or something… now I understand that I was a case or missing sidewalls!! I live in Canada and all the nail salons are Vietnamese owned. Some ladies are talented, but most just do an average or below average job. As for the state of the salon, 99% of them are dirty, the lamps are dirty, the brushes are dirty etc. I have tried going to different types of salons that charge almost double for a mani pedi but they can barely do a basic regular manicure. So overall, we really don't have many options. I think the best places for proper manicures pedicures is if you have a Eastern European do it.

I had this idea for a video a few months ago, but my husband talked me out of it. I ended up deciding not to, for my nails health and my client's health. I would hate it if any of my client's caught a disease from me if I'd been exposed to unsanitary practices, even though I wear gloves as a nail tech. This salon looks horrendous. Did she use EMA? Or MMA? It is making my skin crawl watching her use used files. You are a brave person. I wish more people knew how bad a lot of salons are.

for tipping i usually go slightly above what taxes were( in washington state its about 9-10% taxes). i tip way more than you should because i always liked being tipped more lol. Tipping really is for food/taxi/delivery workers who helped you, other services you can tip more if they did a good job. in some states they can be paid less than minimum wage because their tips make up most of their take home pay, scummy and really bad for the workers.
@modaciouslav4792

So then what is your standard for tipping then? 10%, or more? Tipping really is for anyone in the service industry. Although like you said some employers pay less which is total bull crap and alot pos ppl feel guilted in to tipping more than necessary
@judyh3707
@judyh3707 2 года назад
@@modaciouslav4792 lol right, I'm trying to gage what OP considers to be a generous tip, and what "slightly more than tax" constitutes. I say 10% is a rather poor tip, 15% is a fine tip, 20% or more is a good tip. Any more than that (unless service was simply exceptional), you probably have guilt issues.
@Chocolatemilkpro
@Chocolatemilkpro 2 года назад
@@modaciouslav4792 it depends where you are. Most people I know tip 5% which is very low. I tip around 10% plus 3-5 dollars on that, usually comes to 15% and I usually tip 25% on taxi cause gas is high right now. 10% is most people's standard and is fine, plus it's up to you to tip.

I always tip 15% unless it was bad service then less. I got chased by a manager from a restaurant one night when we left 10 cents. 4 of us and the waiter screwed up every order but it got worse after that. It was a highly rated and very expensive restaurant $$$$ so it was inexcusable. The manager wanted to know where his servers tip was?? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ we told him the truth that he was a horrible server. I know people work hard (most often) and I reward good service. But bad service no requirements 10% is a hint things weren’t great, 15% ok service, 20% good service, 25% great service, 30% and up exceptional service. IMHO after working in a service industry for 32 years.

I would like to know about the sanitisation you observed. Most of these walk-in nail bars use the same one nail file on all their customers. I know this because before I became a nail tech I went to those places. Most of the time they are the same price as a qualified nail tech but the fact that they can give you a full set in an hour without appointment is what appeals to so many. The cleanliness though of these salons are extremely poor. Who knows what kind of skin condition or bacteria the previous customer had that the nail file was used on. I'm betting they didn't sanitise your or their own hands prior to the service either.
