Just a note, you can stand further in front of your opponent, but if he hits you with the ball, it's his point since you're blocking the front wall.

I have had issues in games where I have placed myself on the recommended slightly left of centre T position to hunt the volley etc and my opponent has said they could not potentially hit a shot to the opposite front corner so I should not be standing that far over.

It depends on your opponent's options. If you hit a tight drive, they will have straight and boast options (hence the cheating over won't result in stroke). Hit it too loose and cheat over and it may be a stroke. Watch the pros - they hit tight balls and then cheat over all the time.
