Nakajima tries on the Godzilla suit one last time 

R.I.P. Haruo Nakajima 1929-2017. The man who was Godzilla.

I had the pleasue of meeting Nakajima at New York Comic Con this year. Poor guy needed his daughter's help in seeing where to sign my DVD. I watched this before meeting him in excitement!

No matter how heavy and uncomfortable that suit must be, he looks like he was genuinely enjoying himself. All the old movements and poses came right back, like he had never stopped being Godzilla. RIP Nakajima 😢

One. last. time.

Nakajima did an awesome job. He took it upon himself to pioneer suitmation along with the original 1954 crew. His bodily gestures either reinstated Godzilla as a relentless somber force of destruction to a lovable cheery good-hearted earth defender easily, and he has endured harsh conditions in the several suits he donned, Goji or otherwise (injured his abdomen during Varan and it never healed properly), and poured his soul into entertaining us. He has been having health issues recently, and hopefully he will recover soon. Great video, didn't know he did this in '83, and I especially didn't know they made a Godzilla suit in '79. EDIT 8/7/17: Rest in peace, Haruo Nakajima. Just heard of his passing today.

Godzilla is awesome! I'm 47 years old and still watch it and always will! I watch every chance I get!

I'm glad you liked it, I found it on Toho's region 2 Ghidrah dvd. I swear I heard somewhere that it was the 1973-75 suit and that the actual clip was from '73. I'll change the description and title accordingly. It's great to here from the author of the Tsuburaya book. What a great tribute to one of the most underrated names in cinema.

Thanks for posting this rare clip -- I have never seen this before, but his is not from 1973. This is from 1983, and is 8mm footage taken by the staff of "Uchusen" magazine while shooting photographs for one of their installments on suit actors by Hurricane Ryu. In one shot, Nakajima (in the Godzilla suit) is holding issue #15 of "Uchusen" which was the summer issue when the magazine was a quarterly, which was published in 1983. (continued below)
