It was the coolest, most dramatic mechanism that I had ever seen in a component. I think it still is. It's the main reason why I didn't fall for the flagship Dragon's awesome display of chiseled black buttons - each having its own deep red or green led. I think B &O's artistic. vertical cd player was a distant second place
I have one. I traded for it when it was 1 week old in 1986. I used it regularly for years, then retired it. I've had it in storage for almost 20 years. I took it out a few weeks ago, cleaned and lubed it. It works perfectly. It's an absolutely amazing deck. The sound with a good tape (TDK-SA, for example) is stunning even today. One of the best decks ever made.
I bought a RX 505 also. Mine needs work. It’s my most treasured piece of audio equipment. I can’t bring myself to get rid of it. I won’t EVER. It took me almost 9 months to save up to buy it in 1986. It was such a marvel of engineering I thought back then. I couldn’t afford the Dragon and didn’t really need the 2 speed Nakamichi so I bought the 505. Reading this post brought back memories. Not sure whether I will repair it but looking at it…still in 2021 brings back so many memories.
A bar in Eureka, CA had one of these, and I saw it in action a few times. There is also a scene in the film 9 1/2 Weeks where you see one in action in Mickey Rourke's apartment.

Yup and to my ears I can hear that in this demo, sounds great in both directions! I suspect not many people got the importance of that, then or now. Also, as complex as this system is, Nakamichi did it to make a series of decks with auto reverse that were more affordable and simpler than their Dragon, which had "NAAC" which did servo-controlled head alignment on the fly, though it could only do auto reverse on playback not record. I'd thought about an RX series deck but my dream was to own a Dragon, and finally got one in 1995, lightly used but in need of some attention which a local dealer facilitated and I still own it and will never part with it!
I owned two of these machines in the late 1980s. The reason Nakamichi did auto reverse this way is that by continually spinning the tape head through 180 degrees over time, knocked the head out of azimuth alignment therefore dulling the sound of the cassette and putting adverse wear on the head itself. By spinning the cassette's. through 180 degrees, the head could remain fixed in position and therefore not prone to alignment problems, plus it looked super cool, too.
@@andygee8716 correct!! They had head flippers when this deck was made. This way was the only way to get a true 3 head deck that records on BOTH sides of the tape AND providing a non-moving head auto reverse solution
The motors were extremely quiet. But remember the features, auto record pause, the auto fade, etc. it was so feature laden. If the cassette tape was loose or had slack it would tighten the tension automatically. It also had different rewind and fast forward speeds. What a fantastic tape deck. It’s only rivals were the Revox and Tandberg. Or maybe the RX 303.
@@uniquesoundsolutions RX-303 is missing off tape monitoring and the program search and cue mode, along with other features. No wonder everyone went for the 505 instead
Micki Rourke had one of these in 9 1/2 weeks. When I saw the tape flip I knew I needed to get one one day. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wQtVNTBvANI.html
