No, its a match..A competition.. And a lot of the factors you could encounter "in the streets" are not part of it. For example , no multiple attackers, no weapons, and no groin or eye strikes, no scratching, poking, biting, finger bending/breaking, no knees to the head on the ground, etc. But other than that most things are allowed. The realistic aspect of it is the most important one: uncooperative, resisting and aggressive opponents. And thats where you start with realistic self defense.

Seagal didn't challenge Lebelle to a fight, according to the story (which is unconfirmed) it was a demonstration . Seagal thought he could use his Aikido to get out of a Lebelle choke and he couldn't and got choked out.

Ariel makes fun of Seagal and I've done it too. But at this point, after Seagal being so closely involved with some of the best martial artists in the world, I've got to at least consider the possibility that the guy really does know his shit.

Btw clearly in a real fight u should by all means avoid the ground n if u get on the ground, get up and out as fast as possible. In reality there are of cors other vital factors that can end the fight (or your life), compared to the controlled conditions of the ring/octagon. Weapons and multiple attackers for example.

well ive never seen his films he started acting at 36, jackie isnt a 7th degree black belt in akido so no. If segal is an actor you have to call bruce lee and actor who started acting in 66 which means he acted earlier than segal

This debate about forms vs sparring has been going on for millennia. Kano believed in sparring to train but took out all strikes and joint locks so that sparring would be safe. He still believed in training forms for strikes and locks though. One branch of aikido has sparring, but again it still has certain rules. UFC allows most strikes/locks but still has safety as you clearly pointed out. At the end of the day neither forms nor sparring are a real fight. For that you have to go out and fight!

There have been many. Seagal challenged Judo Gene Lebell and got choked out in seconds by Gene. Even Nam Phan recently challenged Seagal after he started to make arrogant claims in UFC as well. Needless to say Seagal never took the challenge.

Belts don't mean much in terms of reality either. There are no standards. Maybe number of hours of practice or competitions won. But still it depends on the practicality of the style. Some styles practice uncooperatively n aggressively in all distances n dimensions, like it will be in reality, n others are gentle, incomplete, or pure art or point based sports. Comparing something like aikido to UFC in terms of reality is simply a no brainer. Reality isn't like any demo, nor like Seagal movies.

Did Nam have a problem with it? No. So why do you? His background is Vietnamese.

Knowing how to defend yourself is a small part natural skill and a big part training. And it matters a big lot what kind of training / MA. Going to the ground on the street is a good way to get knifed to death or have your head kicked in by ur opponent's buddies.
