@@1738frfrthey actually messed it up. Luffy says that he doesn't know what was happening when he actually did hear what happened to nami. The reason why luffy said he didn't know what happened in the anime/manga, is because he literally walked away from the goddamn explanation
Nami asking for help and Luffy giving her his hat is still to this day one of my favorite One Piece moments. This whole arc with Arlong is what solidified me sticking with One Piece way back when I first started it.
Just sharing a few things.. - Helmeppo is the name of the haircut guy - Zeff and Garp only know each other by reputation probably - Luffy gave Nami his hat even though Luffy NEVER lets anyone touch it. Nami knew this thats why him letting her wear it meant he trusts her and has her back. - the Nami “help me” scene was the reason most of the viewers first started to fall in love with the series.
_"One man's trash is another man's treasure."_ To the rest of the world, Nami is a betraying thief. But to Luffy, Nami is a precious friend, a comrade and a *treasure.* 4:16 Netflix has yet to release this version of 'My Sails Are Set.' Aurora's humming together with the instrumental is hauntingly beautiful.
As to why it was also a sweet moment when he put his treasure, his strawhat, onto her showing her his trust while also by extension calling her his treasure
Haircut guys name is Helmeppo. Its only said like once or twice in the show so it's easy to forget. I love that they are giving Koby and him much more screen time because in the anime they are barely shown after the original island until much later
@@rusenakmanwe still get Loguetown, the final episode shows the "guy with 2 cigar", Zoro needs 2 swords, the look-a-like must be introduced to moss head.
@@imdestinymaker I really don't know how everyone's so goddamn sure we're gonna get Logue Town in S2? Doesn't the ending of S1 with Nami talking about the river suggest that they are gonna skip it?
She did. She stole from pirates & corrupt marines. And not with ease. It took her blood, sweat and tears to gather all those money. The live action didn't highlight it, but the money was supposed to be stained with Nami's blood.
@@sinisterpanda2738 Really bummed that live action changed Nami to just a thief (even attempting to steal from Kaya) when in the manga/anime, she was a thief who only stole from pirates.
@@navyblue8719 yeah the only time we have seen Nami steal from regular people is when she yoinked her entire village's wallets during the goodbye lmao, however, she left the 100mil with them
Anyone have any interviews links with him in this role? I really enjoy seeing the main cast talk abt the series and I like the sm stuff a lot of the other actors have posted, but it's hard finding anything with the other cast members (live interviews, I mean). I've only found one with Luffy's kid actor.
Nami's trauma of asking for help is more clear in the anime because of certain events they changed in the Live Action. When Bellemere was about to be shot, Genzo was there and Nami screamed for HELP for her mother then Genzo along with the whole village tried to save them, fought the arlong pirates but got brutally defeated then Bellemere was shot dead. Nami and Nojiko were instructed to leave the island too before the Arlong finds out about Bellemere. and she said while crying "Why do we have to leave? Is it because we're poor that I can't be Bellemere's kid anymore."
Luffy putting the hat on Nami's head is an iconic scene in the manga/anime. I did see it mentioned in the comments, but one thing I wish they wouldn't have changed is the fact that the village knew about Nami's deal with Arlong. For me, some of the emotional impact is lessened just a bit, but they still nailed this scene!
Netflix probably did that because they felt the village knowing about Nami's situation wouldn't resonate with audiences outside Japan. From their perspective it's like the villagers were okay with Nami's abuse
@@joshua7015Agreed. Even though it was Nami's idea and choice, it still stands on the edge of a village selling a child into slavery for their own survival. But I do wish they at least kept Nojiko in the know.
Im new fan to OP but to me, Im honestly glad they changed that story tho. If they all knew what Nami's doing (stealing, drawing map in chain, basically being a slave, sacrificed her childhood to save them) and they didn't do anything bout it, well that kind of cruel if u ask me lol. And in Ep 8, there's scene where Genzo says sorry for not knowing the sacrifices she made for them, honestly, that sh*t HIT harder for me. if scenario was like in manga / anime where the villager knew about Nami's deal with Arlong and I was one of the adult villager who knew that info, I'll protect her and raise her under my caring instead and never let her do what she did. I'll be the one who find the money for Arlong or if it possible, I'll just bring her & nojiko out of the islands after their mom died. And maybe comeback later with the money. Some scenario like that.
@@achmadmahdiputra the live action version is great but the manga's is better since it adds a lot of dimension and complexity to the scenario. When Nami joined the Arlong Pirates she confided in Nojiko about her deal with Arlong, Nojiko in turn eventually told it to the village. The village had to decide if they were gonna rebel (and die) against the Arlong Pirates or go with Nami's plan to protect the villagers. They decided for the latter. Nonetheless the village acted as if they hated Nami for betraying them and joining the Arlong pirates, playing ignorant of Nami's deal with Arlong so that Nami would never feel pressured or tied to the village, and if she ever decides to run away and live her own life it would make it easier for her. When Nami's trust gets betrayed by Arlong the villagers had enough. They felt disrespected, that Nami was abused and misused like that, with Arlong never having the intention to honor the deal. They held hope that the suffering was worth it, both on the village's side and Nami's. This is when they decided to rebel against the Arlong Pirates, knowing full well they would all lose their lives.
@@joshua7015 To me the most likely reason is just pacing. If you imagine the scenes shown in the manga on television, they'd spend so long going back and forth the emotional impact would stall.
Nami asking Luffy to help her is an iconic moment in One Piece. Even before I started reading and watching, I knew of that scene. The show did it a little different to the manga and anime but it was so damn impactful and emotional.
Just a non-spoiler heads up, Oda said there's no romance between any of the crewmates. They're all just friends. And in my opinion it's better that way.
And Zeff tell stories about his hunting on Jaya. And in the previous episode Nami read story about Norbland. Like an anime, this series has many foreshadowing what's really good sign.
@@alexkruger6728 *SPOILERS* The only problem I have with Nami reading Zoro Noland's story is that Nami shouldn't even know it. It shouldn't even be in the East Blue. Noland's story is a popular tale in the North Blue, and when they were at Jaya, none of the Straw Hats even knew the story except for Sanji. It's a great Easter egg, don't get me wrong, but Noland's story was a big hint about Sanji's past. Only sanji should know it since he came from the North Blue.
@@marbollsmb3116 You might be looking too hard into that one. Someone can just be reading a book without knowing the material, which is what it seemed like she was doing. It's not like I read One Piece for the first time already knowing the story..... Nami probably just found the book inside the Going Merry since it did belong to rich rich people.
Strawhat is Luffy's most important treasure but by putting that on her head, He told her without saying a word that she is the he treasured right now and trust her with everything. That gave assurance to Nami that Luffy isn't leaving her for anything
15:45 Oh yes, Sanji's thirsty, but nowhere near as thirsty as he is in the manga/anime! One of the single best changes they made for the live action is changing Sanji's character from borderline obnoxiously thirsting over every decent looking woman (funny at first, annoying after the 200th time) to someone who still is after every girl but a bit more flirty, charming and calm about it. Really fit that story well and makes it a lot easier to watch. By the way, Sanji's "women never say what they want" isn't meant to be a "oh I never listen to women and do what I want" but more a "she's a beautiful woman so surely there has to be more to it because I want to always see the good in her". Still sexist, but at least not macho-oppressive Andrew Tate shit.
And you have to think about japanese culture, in every anime or manga there is this "thirsty" over women, it's not only sanji, but countless characters, even badass ones. In japan there is this "obsession", these fantasies about women, there are even perverted manga, it doesn't seem but Japan is perverted, more than we think, and a lot of time the outcome is a gag for an avarage reader, even though there are reasons for sanji's behaviour over women
@@danielefortini536 Of course it's meant to be a gag. Doesn't change the fact that what started out as comedic relief gets repetitive, boring and obnoxious after having 1000+ chapters & episodes about it and having it pushed to the extent where it compromises some of the actually interesting aspects of Sanji. Seems like a bit of deflection trying to defend Sanji rather than seeing him as he is. He has some good traits, but that is arguably his worst trait. And it was a great decision to tune that trait down in the LAA.
@@mrcx6142 I'm totally ok with the live action version, rather I'm glad they have done sanji like that because it's better, I was only saying that japan has a particular culture regarding women, I wasn't saying Sanji is bad character or not, I was only saying that every stories you read you have to understand the culture and thoughts behind it. Like pudding wedding, she is 16 and 99% of people talk shit about it, instead of finding the reasons behind this choice and find that when Oda was writing his story, some years ago the legal age in japan was 16, and people talk bad about it because they are used to 18 or even 20 in other states. I wasn't trying to defend sanji, even when I said reasons behind is behaviour because is the truth, you can like it or not
@@danielefortini536 Look, you bringing this up is needless, and there's no need to have a discussion over this either. Everyone who isn't new to the world of shonen and manga/anime in general knows that shonen are geared towards young boys as core demographic. We don't even need to paint a picture of a misogynistic Japan when the answer in this case is as simple as "it appeals to the core demographic, which is japanese young to adolescent boys".
Even if you don't continue the LA reaction with the anime I would recommend reacting just to a few key moments. Especially Nami's "help me" and the following walk to Arlong park that the LA ommitted.
I love how you guys take notes. I know it's probably not a big deal to ya but that alone shows how much you try to engage with the shows you watch. You have no idea how many other reacts don't put in nearly that much effort.
I find it cute they not only take notes but they do a little "episode report" on the next video like teacher assigned them homework and they were quizzed on it the next day, lol.
Nami and arlong park sold me to one piece, and up to this day, nami remains as my top favorite female character. She's so well written (for me). Her whole tragic past is the reason why she was so greedy for money, coz money is survival for her. Not only for her, but for others too. Money is essential for their daily voyages, and she won't hesitate to use their money to save someone. And she would abandon the money if her friends is at risk because her friends are also her treasure. It's so hard for her to trust people, or ask for help because she knows how strong Arlong is, and she doesn't know how luffy can go or if he can even beat Arlong but she truly smiles and laugh so genuinely when she was with them before she ditched them. Nami is the character who sold me to one piece, Idc if many people dislikes her character but for me, I love how Oda wrote her so well. Nami is physically the weakest in the crew, given the fact that arlong only makes her draw maps and go stealing money without fighting. But her abilities and capabilities such as top tier navigation, cartography (she draws most accurate maps), financial manager, great negotiator, ship captain on a day-to-day activities (she has the most experience that's why she exactly knows that to do every time they're sailing, and has been saving their lives from danger), she can predict the weather using her instinct and body, etc. That's what makes her strong. She already have strong guys with her, but she's a really good back up or support🤍
Nami asking Luffy for help is such a classic moment in One Piece. Him trusting her with his straw hat, his greatest treasure. His simple order to the boys, "lets go". It was the moment they became a real crew. It was the moment I became obsessed with One Piece. I cried like a baby. The first of many times One Piece made me cry.
Bdw a note for the reactors : there will be no romantic route for the characters whatsoever..they are a crew and it's specified by the writer oda himself.
Dani’s reaction on nami’s moment is so funny lmaoo. 1s she cried, then the next second she go back to focus mode then the next second she laugh then go back to focus mode then the next second as well 😂 She really doesn’t want to miss any scenes 😂
16:16 No, there’s a reason why Zoro & Sanji can’t stand each other. Zoro sees Sanji as a lovesick idiot who falls for every beautiful woman he sees while Sanji sees Zoro as an unrefined brute because of his brusque attitude.
Also, IMO, Zoro can't understand Sanji's obsession with women, the entire point of Zoro's rivalry with Kuina is that he doesn't give a shit about gender, he sees women as equal and can't understand why Sanji treats them so differently
@@alastorcorvusI would also add that another reason I think why Sanji can’t stand Zoro is because his attitude & hair remind him of someone from his childhood who he hates.
Well, in the live action there's also the point that most of the getting to know sanji moments happened while Zoro was unconscious. He just woke up with this random guy suddenly in the crew.
@@klairvoyance This is a detail that wasn't revealed until much later, but Arlong park is designed to be like an island later on in the series that is an amusement part. So the live action took that information and basically retconned Arlong Park to be what it was always supposed to be for the show.
sanji and zoro fight just bc thats their friendship, its rare to not see them arguing in the show when they are together, but it does happen. romance isn't the reason for arguing, they r just silly like that. i mean, my best friend and i argue like that and were super close so.
Not many reactors realise this, but when nojiko said nami got no friend, zoro realise that nami telling the truth at that bar, when they're playing drinks game.
The end of this episode is a huge scene in the anime that got a lot of people to commit to the show this arc is the definitely the best of the east blue saga
They're not OG one piece fans. So lets cut them some slack. Even the showrunner admitted that Zoro & Nami has chemistry in the live action. But that's because Mackenyu & Emily were so good at their job. "No romance among the crew" is a very strict rule from Oda that the showrunners intend to keep.
I really recommend reading or watching the Arlong Park Arc in its original form. While the live action got a lot of the emotional impact, certain things were cut that really helped explain Nami and her relationship with her Villagers and asking for help. I really recommend watching it or reading it.
Regarding Luffy placing his hat on Nami, that moment may hit a little harder in the original source as it's accompanied by Nami having a quick flashback of Luffy declaring that hat to be his most precious treasure, and demanding that no one touch it. It goes out of its way to make sure the audience doesn't miss the significance, compared to the live action's choice to let it be understated. Keep an eye on that hat. It's a pretty useful barometer to track Luffy's trust in others throughout the series.
Yeah, I think it would've been nice to have just 1 or 2 more quick instances of Luffy being bothered by sm1 touching his hat or just being "unreasonably" possessive of it in some eps after ep2 to nail that significance. Esp so, as you said, this tick of his will be important later too.
Odd change they decided between the original and the live action is make Bellemere put up less of a fight against Arlong as well as having the city not know about her sacrifice and keeping quiet about it.
adaption-wise this was imo the "worst" one out of the 4 arcs in the LA (still liked it tho but a lot of it was just condensed) but I guess that's due to only having 2 episodes for it when it at least would have deserved 3...like you can tell how little leeway they had with that f.e. by the omission of Logue Town
They just need to cut more time, i guess. For budget & episode length reasons. Bellmere basically kicked Arlong to the ground and stepped on him in the anime. It doesn't make sense in live action because Bellmere is a normal human without powers. After that, Bellmere got low-key tortured..
Yeah it was bad ass, but I personally couldn't see a scene like that working in live action. Realistically, she shouldn't be able to knock a fishman off his feet. It was cool in the original but it amounted to nothing. However, I do agree that having the village not know ultimately fell off, but I just chalked it up to the production not having/being able to give the villagers enough screen time and dialogue to make that plot line impactful in the live action.
37:00 technically you have more than one more episode, you have 1078 episodes left, if you start the anime after this. But first I suggest you watch the breathtaking world of one piece. Or the openings
Nami asking Luffy for help and him placing the hat on her head is such an iconic moment in the anime and I love how beautifully the live action executed it. I hope you guys check out the anime too after this is over! 😊
32:35 She did tell her. In the anime version. She told her almost immediately after she made the deal with Arlong. Than Nojiko told the villagers without Nami knowing, and the villagers pretended to hate her for years so that she wouldn’t feel guilty if she decided to just run away. They pretended to hate her for her own sake. So it adds an emotional gut punch when you learn this in the anime version that isn’t in this version. Plus, after Nezumi took her treasure, the villagers heard about it and decided to attack Arlong for Nami(a scene which was moved to *after* her “help me” scene while it was *before* her “help me” scene in the anime) and when she *failed* to stop them(it was changed to her succeeding in stopping them in this version) she was at her lowest point, adding more desperation and emotion during her “help me” scene. As great as the live action version of this arc is, it’s nowhere near as good as the anime version.
That scene where Nami asks Luffy for help, even the background story.. all of it, will make you cry for days in the anime. They couldn't portray that emotion and intensity in live action.
This was the moment from the anime that got me all in for the entire series of One Piece. The thing about fish-men being enslaved is a mirror to the trafficking of people in the real world. While fish-people whether they're hybrids like Arlong and his crew have basic living rights they can get captured, enslaved, and sold to the highest bidder by all that are evil in the rotten underbelly parts of the One Piece world.
38:29 - The split screen is due to a 1:1 replication of how the scene went down on the manga and anime, so it's recreating the exact panels of that moment :)
The title screen was Nami - it had tangerines, her staff was the i in 'Piece' and the pirate's bandana was White with blue stripes like Nami's outfit in Episode 2 and the anime.
I used to be a one piece hater even tho I never saw it, but once I saw Nami ask Luffy for help in the anime that’s when I truly fell in love with the show. And then seeing it live action was incredible as well. I just passed ep100 of the anime and I can say I’m excited for the other 900+ lmao
@@marcoscarrasco92 you don't need to force yourself. One Piece in itself is a slow process. All of the arcs are slow even if a little bit. I still love One Piece. It's the 2nd best in my list. For you, you watch some other show that you actually enjoy. Good luck
@@marcoscarrasco92yeah, the east blue arc in the anime is pretty slow and can be a tad too silly for my tastes now (the manga makes it go by quicker, imho). I think it was only bc I was a kid when I saw those eps that I was able to stick with the series. For me, it was around ep150 that I really got invested into the anime instead of just being a casual fan, but it's really once they're in the Grand Line (around ep60?) that the story gets more interesting overall. And I will say that once it got me, each new arc just kept getting better and better too.
"Haircut guy" is Helmeppo. I'm pretty sure the live action established that Garp and Zeff only knew each other by reputation. Even though the two have never interacted (or even been mentioned in the same conversation) in the manga or anime, I still imagine this to be the case. From Sanji's backstory I got the impression that the Cook Pirates were kind of a big deal in their day, so I can imagine "Red Leg" Zeff would be know pretty well throughout the Marines. On the other side of things, Monkey D. Garp is known around the world as "The Hero of the Marines" because of a certain incident that I won't spoil that happened about 36 years before the events of live action season one, so every pirate in the world at that time would have had reason to know the name and feats of Vice Admiral Garp and to be wary of him. Another good reaction; I loved seeing how emotional you ladies got over Nami's backstory and "Help me" scene (which they pulled the visuals for DIRECTLY out of the manga). Can't wait to see your reaction to the season finale. And if you go on through the anime, I will definitely be along for the ride!

18:24 nezumi does mean mouse or rat… sometimes anime character names are very literal 😅
Your description made me laugh while I was crying at the end. Cuz you wrote "Nami is apart of our crew" and I thought you meant apart like separate, like you didn't like her. Then at the end I realized you meant "a part", obviously, and my ESL english had failed me LOL
I just want to reiterate what’s already been said in the show. Garp is undeniably Luffy’s grandpa. When they compare Luffy to Roger, it means he has the qualities to become the next pirate king, and not because they’re related.
With the hat thing its stated that the hat is his most prized treasure and more so touched on in the manga but the fact that he put his most prized possession on her pretty much saying "You are my friend so you someone I treasure as much as this hat". I always loved it and is what got me hooked fully from then on. I was enjoying OP up to that point but it didn't grab me til then. A common theme for a lot of OP fans from the manga/anime.
i missed Hatchi the octopus.. he was the member of the Arlong group and appear in the future too.. they also skipped 3 kids of ussop's crew.. 2 bounty hunters and friends of Zoro from dojo, the guy who hypnotise, the pinwheel, the story of a dog which is not shown but appeared in the end.. and many more.. the talked about Jimbei.. he is a very very important character in future
The biggest cut was Don Krieg. Honestly though I don't really care about him though. Hatching better eventually show up. He's the best Fishman in the series.
Nami didn’t pretend to betray them. She was going to betray them all along. In the anime, Luffy’s life wasn’t in danger when she betrayed them. She just stole their ship(which meant they needed to use someone else’s) and headed to the Conomi Islands.
i never really thought about why there weren't any "fishwomen" arlong pirate but now that i think about it, it checks out. I'm not gonna go in depth about it tho since it's a spoiler but you'll know in the future if you watch the anime
in anime the luffy giving the hat to nami and after that "the walk" is epic for the most one piece fans and maybe the reason to changing from liking to loving the show
17:55 I could be wrong, since it's been a long time since I watched the anime, but I'm pretty sure all female fishmen are classic-style mermaids, so they couldn't really do much on land as pirates.
i always wonder when you're reacting in such a brightly lit room, does it make the screen really hard to see? Like it makes the video look good but I always feel like I'd be squinting lol
