Naming Ceremonies (Ojibwe Culture) 

I’m a Red Lake tribal member, really trying learn and connect with my culture so I greatly appreciate your videos.

I am just about to under go my naming ceremony at 40. I have received visons of Wagoosh in dreams and elsewhere and the Fox has ALWAYS been present in my life somehow. Today when I went to look for a video and have someone explain it people...I came across you. This absolutely is not coincidence and Creator lead me here. I am so excited to know my name and share my gifts with the world

I just turned 36, I was in foster care my whole childhood and my culture was hidden from me. I just received my name in a ceremony at Roseau River. I'm not sure how to spell the name in Ojibwe but in English it's Thunderbird Cloud.

I can't tell you how much I yearn to know more about our traditional ways, not having been raised traditionally. Strangely (or not) I vibe w/ the Potawatomie, which IS the Matriarchal side of my heritage, while I have more Osage/Wha Zha Zhi "Blood" on the Patriarchal side, but I find them very aculturized Spiritually. A bit of an"Odd Duck" I came in w/ a Spirit Guide, who led me to my daughter's Choctaw name, which comes from her Patriarchal side. So a bit confusing. Thank You so much for what U do! Many of us have felt so lost, until our personal experiences bring us to teachers like you. I have had man inner experiences thr meditation about the sources of some of our ceremonial practices & regalia, which R energy states of being & bodies, but as yet have not come across a Native Spiritual Teacher, although I am very greatful to the Spiritual teacher I have followed for over 40 years as a Dreamer/Meditator.

I’ll be 31 this June… I’ve been a member of the Sault Ste Marie tribe since I was about 4 or 5… due to circumstances in life I never got to participate in much more than an occasional powwow. Always wanted to build a stronger connection to the tribe though, just due to circumstances was never able to. Now I have a daughter and a wife, who is not Native but understands and supports connecting to one’s cultural heritage, the difficult part for us is due to my daughters health we are sorta stuck living in Pittsburgh, PA for at least the next 10 years. The videos you’ve uploaded make sure to mention for those of us who were not able to participate in ceremonies as children, they do provide a comfort to me, in still being able to participate even though I’m older, and bolden my desire to make sure my daughter is able to participate while she is young. She’s only gonna be 3 this April. But I do want her to be able to learn about, and experience the cultures she’s descended from, the Polish from her mother, the Irish and Native that she gets from me. I just don’t want her to grow up with only a vague connection or a connection to only one facet of her roots like I did.

18:41 You were talking about some people receiving colours during their naming ceremony and to use those colours for ribbon skirts/shirt, powwow outfit etc. Do you have any knowledge about the meanings of colours in Ojibway culture? I can't seem to find any information on colours/meanings besides the medicine wheel teachings, but wondering if you might know? Miigwetch

Aanin, nanda-gikendeman Anishinaabemowen. I don’t have anyone to name me, my only uncle who has a native name has his name in Dakota (because he was accepted into a Dakota lodge even tho he’s Ojibwe). He doesn’t speak ojibwe. Is this okay? Can I still ask him? He lives across an ocean from me.

Hi my bf just received his Anishinaabe name and I would love to get him a gift with his name and colors. He was given a Thunderbird name and I would like to honor tht the right way. I would love to purchase a gift made by the people of his tribe instead of another white man (like myself) making a profit off off it. Plus I believe it will hold so much more power behind. His tribe is in the U.P unfortunately not around the block from me.
