pearl reference series did the same with different wood types and shell thickness.

Canopus already does different edge shaping depending on your finish. It has been talked about.

Glad that the discussion is about the physical aspects of tuning parameters and design rather than just a new range with alternative plys. If the options are a few bucks for some gel pads or a few grand for a fully floating kit, which would you take?

Wish we could have seen the magnet setup. Missed opportunity.

OKAY...the MAATS magnet thing has already been in use with Roland V-Drums for a while. Randall May invented the MAATS AIRlift Rack for electronic drum kits to have a better feel.

The idea of finishes changing the pitch of a drum by an octave or so has to be false. At most, id expect a thick wrap to dampen the shell and adjust the pitch by a single tone, perhaps. Much more likely that the drums Russ is referring to were different because of the construction of the shell in general. Not shitting on Mapex though.. Most of these innovations are great, particularly the MAATS. One of the best drum companies out there for sure.

Mapex is by far the best brand of drums, no question about it. Design, innovation, great hardware and awesome sound.

Roberto Calderón yes MAPEX and tama are outstanding the Saturn kit just sounds outstanding , very under rated always liked they're hardware as far as shells go though I've always been keen on the Keller shells they just explode when you hit them , but they all sound similar too which puts off people as well , my rig these days is a dW performance , but my next will be the Saturn kit with the 25" bassdrum it's a cannon

Really, really interesting concept to use magnetic field to suspend negative mount effect to drum shell. Really interesting video from NAMM 2019 by Thomann and Mapex. I enjoy in this presentation! Great job people. Thanks for this video!

My question is how does magnetic field affect your microphones on the drum itself

This is a truly revolutionary rethinking of drum design. As a Mapex player myself, I love their drums already. But what Russ Miller and the Design Lab team have created with these new sets, has really raised the bar. Very good indeed!

one minute youre saying the normal mounts/hardware interfere with the sound of the tom, so therefore the magnets suspend the shell to ring freely, but then you say u can control the amount of decay from the magnets themselves? Sounds like there would be less interence with using normal free floating mounts, lot less bulky too.

Kudos to Mapex for investigating into how the properties of sound change as aspects of the source change. I would love to see the raw data being compared on one drum using a tunebot because it is incredible to see this much detail being put into a seemingly simple thing.

Awesome technology but its way too gimmicky. Spend so much time on tiny stuff to make drums sound open and different pitches but then in reality drummers put 2 ply coated heads with moon gel and tune to whatever they think sounds good. They should focus on tone woods, durable hardware, easy functionality and ways to keep the price lower for consumers.
@PeterEnis69
@PeterEnis69 5 лет назад
The price is low...but they should work on their quality control. Half of the hoops from my new Saturn V kit are like 3 to 4 mm uneven/not flat!

And from 10+ feet away, no one can hear the difference in any of this...
@alexbreyer6921
@alexbreyer6921 5 лет назад
You're probably right, but the drummer will know what they like to hear and that effects their performance. The tuning or the tone of drums won't mean anything to the audience generally, but when the drums are set up well it sure makes a difference in whether they like the sound or not.
@petersperspective6122
@petersperspective6122 5 лет назад
Alex Breyer these changes will make some difference. Audiences appreciate things subconsciously that they can't put their finger on.
