I don't think anyone has said pip pip since the 1920s, when everyone who did say it mysteriously died of monocle-related choking. (That's monocle, not mon oncle.) Although to be honest I have been known to say toodle pip.

I certainly say cheerio, but I think that pip pip was supposed to be satirical even when PG Wodehouse was writing his books.

I think it helps that this particular admonishment really applies to basic storytelling, too. It's more relevant when reader/player agency is involved through gameplay, of course, but having a locked door that isn't an intentional red herring will distract readers as well.

It's not really. It's just good writing. If you wrote about the main character checking out a locked door and never came back to it in a book, that would be ad writing. Jess is a good writer.

I know, right?? Blackmoor manor was my absolute favorite, because I am a total werewolf fan! Some of the other, creepier mysteries were Message in a Haunted Mansion, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Ghost of Thorton Hall, The Haunting of Castle Malloy, The Captive Curse, Danger on Deception Island (for the creepy fog and other scenery along the coast), Legend of the Crystal Skull, and I would argue that the Final Scene and Treasure in the Royal Tower were a bit creepy as well, with Final Scene being in an old, run-down theater, and Royal Tower having a huge, mostly empty castle because the characters are stranded there due to a blizzard.

I remember my sisters and my cousin would get together at a new Nancy Drew release, and we'd all play together since fp /is/ scary, unless you're got someone by your side. We would play senior detective and we each had a job roll. Note taker, puzzle solver, jokester, the daring one, and I was the one who would go in when no one was around after hitting a wall and do the one thing we hadn't tried/too scared to do, to everyone coming back with more snacks and drinks and we'd finish up the games. We played them from the first to Danger by Design, then we were all too grown up to continue, I guess. It was really fun, tho the scariest death scene I remember for us was when we were locked and trapped in a burning down shed, and when we were being chased through a maze. I think my best memory was when I saved us from quitting a game cause I went into someone's bag, when everyone was too scared that they were gonna get yelled at and die somehow from snooping that intensely. These games hold a special place in my heart, and can only ever be played with more than one person behind the monitor.

I like that there are different styles of mysteries throughout the series. Some are more adventure based, some are more like a treasure hunt, and others (like this one) lean towards the scary side of things. Some other good scary games from the series are Ghost of Thorton Hall, Shadow at the Water's Edge, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Haunting of Castle Malloy, and Message in a Haunted Mansion.

I discovered these Nancy Drew games through "Mostly Walking" a couple years ago, and they've become one of my favourite guilty pleasures. Playing Blackmoor Manor recently was like discovering a long-lost CD-ROM series from 1993, except from 2004. It gave me all the nostalgic fuzzies and moon logic headaches at the same time and I love it. Also, what do you mean no jump scares? Did you do a run of the game where Ethel wasn't lurking around corners every time you click around the mansion on a puzzle binge? Her Slender Man tactics were scarier than any monster. Anyway, glad to see these on your channel. Hope to see more reviews of ND to come.

Nancy drew curse of blackmore manor was one of my favorite games growing up as a adolescent. It’s actually got me into point and click and other Nancy drew games. If you want other recommendations I would suggest the haunted carousel, secret of shadow ranch, train to blue moon canyon. The reason their are so many Nancy drew games are because these games seem to have a big fan base you can even find the fans of the games with their own sub-reddit. I don’t know if you know or not but Lani the voice actress of Nancy drew has been replaced for the upcoming Nancy drew game, midnight in Salem which has been on hiatus for a couple of years. Even though Nancy sounds a little old in these games she has been with the games for a long time upsetting fans when HER interactive replaces her. Fans have also been upset with the hiatus for the upcoming game. However I would recommend the older games since I do believe the newer games don’t seem to have the same appeal as older ones.

15 years ago i was really into the Nancy Drew games. They all follow the same concept and it worked for me. They emphasize characters and story. Getting to know people and helping them out, while observing. Using her friends Bess and George or the Hardy boys as a helpline. And they try to teach you the basics of something like bird calls or writing short hand. And yes, the mini games aren't always great but they add variety to the adventure. And i felt like the developers really tried hard to come up with new ideas every time and not repeat themselves. I will always remember the good times i had with those games.

her interactive got their start with a point and click adventure game inspired by the vampire diaries book series (if i recall correctly the division of american laser games that became her interactive was originally created for that game) and it's an amazing game, both in the sense that its live action fmv aged hilariously and the fact that it's a genuinely fun and engaging game that's really satisfying to figure out! some of the hallmarks of the nancy drew series, like the first person viewpoint and needing to talk to everyone as much as you can to piece together how to solve some of the puzzles, got their start in the vampire diaries! i can't recommend it enough :)

When I was in middle and high school my mom and I would play these together. She isn't really into video games but we would spend a whole Saturday on the computer together solving the puzzles and unraveling the mystery. My favorites were Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake and Treasure in the Royal Tower. It's so nostalgic to see this game! :) In my opinion the later games were not as engaging. They had less free exploration than the earlier titles, instead going back to teleporting from location to location rather than allowing you to roam around large environments freely. It took away from the experience a little for me, so I don't play them as much now. But I absolutely loved the earlier games! Thanks for covering this title! :)

Blackmoor Manor is a close second. My favorite thing about the older games was the beautiful poems on woven tapestries that tied in to the game in one way or another, often as hints on what needed to be done, or context. My sister once got close to the ending of the carousel one, but was suddenly attacked by the antagonist and we were both too scared to go back. The weird 3am ritual in this one really creeped me out. I found this game interesting myself, and if you're looking for the scariest games in the series, the next one after this was Shadow At the Water's Edge, which was then dethroned by Ghost of Thornton Hall. And, yes, going immediately for Senior Mode for *any* game in this series is a bad idea. And now, trivia. Loulou is ALSO voiced by Lani Minella. And some of Jane's games, like Bul and Petroglyph Punch, are things from earlier games in the series.

It's funny, when she said the channel would branch out more I was a little skeptic about it but now that's become my favorite content of hers (although this isn't really about a TV show or an actual book, but you get the idea). Keep an open mind kids! It can make good things happen!

These games get so little love and attention on the internet, I’d love to see more! My favorite Nancy Drew is The Ghost of Thornton Hall!

I’ve been playing these since I was a kid! We’d crowd around our only desktop for hours, eating nachos and writing detailed notes to try and solve the mystery. My personal favorite is Warnings at Waverly Academy; I also HIGHLY recommend Secret of the Old Clock, Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, and Alibi in Ashes

YES! The Nancy Drew Her Interactive games! These were my jam! I sucked at them so hard but I literally bought every one up to... White Wolf I think, after a friend gave me some early ones. I love you (platonically) for all the Murder, She Wrote stuff but this is like icing on the cake.

Aaah the nostalgia. This was the first Nancy Drew game I ever played, I got it with my monthly Big Fish Games credit thing years ago. I have since bought every. Single. Game. And new games are the most exciting thing in my life lmao

I had a few of these games a few years ago, but most of them didn't have all the discs and the one that did was legit terrifying

I loved this game when I was a kid! I actually installed it on my computer again last year, and spent most of my time playing Go Fish with Jane instead of accomplishing anything. 🤷

oh dang! this game is actually super nostalgic for me; some of my first experiences with video games were with this specific Nancy Drew games, my Mom loved to play them and we'd spend plenty of time going over notes. It was so satisfying getting to the ends of these, I think we only ever finished 3 out of the 10 or so we played!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was creeped out by Myst. It took me YEARS to be able to play it without being totally freaked out.

YES!! It's always great to see ND games getting the recognition they deserve. Since the games have been around so long and are still coming out, this fanbase is small but devoted.

The original books were published until 2003, but they are still making books starring her to this day, albeit in a spin-off series that is told first person. There are about 2 new books a year. (I discovered this when someone did a TIL on Reddit about them still selling millions of books a year, and I wondered if they were even still making new ones. Turns out they are.)

Thanks for doing a Nancy Drew game, I was obsessed with these as a kid! I think I played up to like game #18 of these and I would play the older ones over and over and over. I think my first experience with really talking to other people online was on the Nancy Drew forums lol! Excellent nostalgia trip :D
