Lots of people play the guitar and many of them play it very well but not many can invent brand new sounds the way Nancy does. She is genius. She says that she doesn't know the names of cords and I believe that. She plays from an inner instinct that just knows her instrument. The guitar is just melded to her heart.

(01:21) "I used the most dissonant, oddball notes I could come up with" (02:04) "And now you make a weird cord." (02:53) "Using the vibrato like that kind of helps it not sound as ... wrong. It makes it sound like you meant to do it." Nancy Wilson is so musically creative, she makes even the things she plays wrong sound fantastic.

I find that a very odd thing to say.... “Of that Era” ....🤔. Guitarists are held to a learned standard of technical ability. That technical ability, and the way the instrument is played, and mastered, doesn’t ever change with the “era”... In other words, a great guitar player who was performing in 1975, is still measured up in the exact same way in 2020. Therefore, a great guitarist in 1975 is just as great in 2020. If you’re having to make an excuse for a players ability, saying “They were good for back then”, or “They don’t measure up against today’s guitarists”, what that really means, and what you’re really saying, is that they were never really very talented guitarists. Understand?? In a nutshell; The guitar hasn’t changed over time. The standard measure of a good guitarist also hasn’t changed. To say “Someone was good for their era”, is what’s called a backhanded compliment. In other words, it’s insulting to say that. Nancy is a good guitarist. Then and now. Period. She wasn’t and still isn’t some outstanding virtuoso guitarist. She’s just a good solid player. Her real strong points are rhythm guitar, and fingerpicking style. She also has a good “hybrid” picking ability which she often uses. (It’s mostly called “Hybrid” picking now days but has had other names confused with it as well... such as Travis picking. ) The thing is, all of these styles of picking, have always been around. But people change the names of things over time. As I said earlier, the guitar, and techniques haven’t changed. Even when many of the names used for certain things has. For example, on Silver Wheels, Nancy uses hybrid picking,/ a loose style of Travis picking, where she goes for the steady open “A” quarter notes that would typically be your thumb beat rhythm. But she’s using hybrid style without a thumb pick here. However, I’ve seen her perform it live, where she DOES use a thumb pick, and uses an all out Travis picking style. Anyhow, ENOUGH about the picking !!! Lol. She’s very competent in numerous styles of fingerpicking!! In closing; The main over-all point here, was about properly rating a guitarists playing ability. First off, this evaluation of a players ability, can NOT be done by someone who’s not a guitarist themself. A players ability is NOT judged by how popular a song is!! 🙄🙄 Pathetic but I see it all the time. And lastly: As said earlier, the technical and theory aspects of playing guitar have not changed over time. What made a good guitar player in 1970, makes a guitar player equally good in 2020. The standards haven’t changed. A crummy player in 2020, would be a crummy player if he got in their time machine and went back and played in 1975. They’d be bad there also!! Understand?? Hope this helps... And as for Nancy? She’s a good solid player, who excels in great rhythm guitar and multiple finger styles. And as I said, that applies for ALL time. Then & Now...

I was 16 years old, February 1979 in NC and I was right up against the stage. I remember how good that fog felt because it was hot in that arena! This song is the grand daddy of so much of the 1990s Seattle sound. The opening guitar makes you almost feel like it got stuck in Jerry Cantrell's ear for 6 decades. The latter part being Anne's vocals over those sludging heavy guitars with massive drum fills, had to be 1000% inspiration for Soundgarden. I'm sure someone will school me on some other Seattle acts that came between these 2 eras that bridged them, but damn this song seems so out there for Heart.

Nancy, your guitar tutorials are my fave rave. You don’t come across like a goddess of rock, but more like a patient, sweet and mellow rock diva and the girl next door. I always loved your bands songs, especially the one where you and your sis harmonize together at the end of Barracuda which to me sounds a lot like the Amazons war song from the old Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies I used to watch in, the 60’s! The first time I heard that song I thought, uh oh? It’s the Amazon, war song! Btw, I have a few hundred song lyrics that I would like to give to, you guys! I feel like, I owe you. Y’know? Cuz you guys have rocked me, many times! Here, is a sample. Here’s the deal! I will give you my lyrics and you can use them if you want too, or change the lyrics around, whatever. I don’t, care. I will give you my almost full 36 Gb iPad tablet, and ask only that you pay it forward which Heart does, everyday. Just don’t stop rocking, ladies. Or posting excellent tutorials, Nancy. I borrowed a guitar and stole my sister’s Beatles songbook in 1970,and taught myself, guitar. But I worked rescue, not rock! You guys Nancy are on, a different level. Yknow? Okay, thanks Nancy! I've waited my entire original Heart fan life to interface with Nancy in an authentic way! Listening to her articulate the song's meaning and her choices (sounds like water, etc) gives me the Mistral Windchills because it confirms everything I have always felt, which runs deep!

Awesome my favorite Heart song, and I think it may be because of the darkness of the tri-tone parts I've been hearing, which is now confirmed watching her make one of the 'weird chords.' See does a great job explaining the song! I'll be watching this video several times until I get this! So far I've just learned the first few chords...yippee!! Thanks for sharing this. I'd love to see more of these by Nancy! 🎸🎶
